    This is the report from the Northern Area Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th October, 1981. It includes the information on the recommendations of the Area Fisheries Advisory Committees on the Review of Inland and Coastal Fisheries in England and Wales, and the restructuring of rod and line fishing licence duties. It also covers the report by the area fisheries officer on fisheries activities. This comments on river conditions and fishing, migratory fish movements from Yearl Weir fish counter and an update on Holmwrangle hatchery with the summary of the fly planting programme for salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Finally the report adds about stockings carried out by the Angling Associations, fish disease and management and survey work.The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority.     Non native freshwater snails: a global systematic review and potential distribution of two problematic species.

    Ecological studies in all environments of the world the effects of non-native species in various parts of the world are discussed. Regarding the invasion of these environments, we highlight the Phylum Sanitary, especially the ecological Mollusa, for presenting numerous gastronomic classes, with many species with potential, which can lead to as many sanitary, as well as sanitary and graves, in places of invasion. Know the invasive species that are reported in their scientific distribution, in this case introduction and the main ones are reported, is of fundamental importance. Knowing the risk of introducing an invasive species, and its impacts on the invaded places, it is necessary to find ways of prevention. A precious tool of meaning is an invasion of the invasive potential of one, thus generating a risk that indicates the suitability of the habitat or probability of occurrence based on the environmental conditions of the native area and the area in which the species may become invasive. . In this way, the adequacy of the invasive Melanoides tuberculata against a native species by Biomphalaria glabra, which is also a species with potential to cause toilets, is of fundamental importance, to predict possible invasion sites, and if the species are competing for the same ecological niches. Thus, the present work is subdivided into two works that address issues such as: a systematic of scientific articles about invasive freshwater gastropods. The second work will address the modeling of the current and future potential distribution of two problematic gastropod species in South America.Estudos ecológicos em ambientes aquáticos continentais têm discutido com amplitude o efeito das espécies não nativas em várias partes do mundo. Em relação à invasão destes ambientes, destacamos o Filo Mollusca, principalmente a classe Gastropoda, por apresentar inúmeras espécies, sendo muitas destas espécies com potencial invasor, que podem levar a prejuízos tanto ecológicos, quanto econômicos e sanitários graves, em locais de invasão. Neste caso, conhecer as principais espécies invasoras que são reportadas em artigos científicos, entender sua distribuição global, seus meios de introdução e os principais danos causados, é de fundamental importância. Sabendo do risco de introdução de uma espécie invasora, e seus impactos nos locais invadidos, faz-se necessário estudos de formas de prevenção. Uma ferramenta valiosa nesse sentido é a inferência do potencial invasor de uma espécie, gerando assim um mapa de risco que indique a adequabilidade do habitat ou probabilidade de ocorrência com base nas condições ambientais da área nativa e da área em que a espécie pode vir a se tornar invasora. Deste modo, verificar adequabilidade da espécie invasora Melanoides tuberculata frente a uma espécie nativa Biomphalaria glabrata, que também é uma espécie com potencial causador de prejuízos sanitários, é de fundamental importância, para prevermos os possíveis locais de invasão, e se as espécies estão competindo pelos mesmos nichos ecológicos. Deste modo, foi efetuado uma revisão sistemática de artigos científicos a respeito de gastrópodes invasores de água doce.     El objetivo delainvestigación fue caracterizar el estado actual del ecosistema de manglar del Parque Nacional Caguanes (PNC). Este ecosistema ocupa la mayor área boscosa del parque, alrededor de 3342,7 hectáreas, que representan el 61,5 %. Los datos fueron obtenidos a partir de 10 parcelas levantadas en cada una de las cuatro zonas de estudio identificadas. Se comprobó la presencia de las cuatro especies de mangle existentes en Cuba, así como el predominio de AvicenniagerminansL.(mangle prieto), que en algunas áreas forma rodales monoespecíficos. La distribución de los diámetros por clase diamétrica en todas las zonas denota una estructura inadecuada de los rodales. La zona de estudio tres es la que posee mayores valores en sus variables y parámetros dasométricos. El paso del huracán Irma provocó serias afectaciones al medio, con un elevado porcentaje de árboles muertos, y se apreció en varias zonas el desplazamiento de la regeneración de la especie principal (A. germinans), a favor de Rhizophora mangle L.(mangle rojo). Los resultados obtenidos permiten hacer propuestas de manejos más adecuados, para que este ecosistema cumpla con sus funciones ambientales y socioeconómicas, a la vez que constituyen una herramienta para la toma de decisiones por la administración.The objective of the research was to characterize the current state of the mangrove ecosystem of the Caguanes National Park (PNC). This ecosystem occupies the largest wooded area in the park, around 3,342.7 hectares, representing 61.5%. The data were obtained from 10 plots surveyed in each of the four identified study areas. The presence of the four mangrove species existing in Cuba was verified, as well as the predominance of Avicenniagerminans L. (black mangrove), which in some areas forms monospecific stands. The distribution of diameters by diameter class in all zones denotes an inadequate structure of the stands. Study area three is the one with the highest values in its variables and dasometric parameters. The passage of Hurricane Irma caused serious damage to the environment, with a high percentage of dead trees and the displacement of the regeneration of the main species (A. germinans) in favor of Rhizophora mangle L. (red mangrove) was observed in several areas. The results obtained allow to make proposals for more adequate management, so that this ecosystem fulfills its environmental. and socioeconomic functions, at the same time that they constitute a tool for decision-making by the administration.PublishedReferee

    Influence of temperature and salinity on the sound speed in shallow waters of the Tumaco Bay

    oai:aquadocs.org:1834/42545El presente trabajo establece los rangos de variación horizontal y vertical de la velocidad del sonido en la bahía de Tumaco (Nariño, Colombia), y describe su comportamiento a partir de datos registrados en campo con el objetivo de identificar el efecto de la profundidad, temperatura y salinidad en su variabilidad. En el área de estudio se distribuyeron perfiles con resolución espacial aproximada de 500 m; 184 perfiles de columna de agua para mayo de 2019 y 165 perfiles para abril de 2021. Los resultados obtenidos muestran una variación de velocidad del sonido entre 1526.6 m/s y 1540.3 m/s para los perfiles del año 2019, y entre 1518.5 m/s y 1542.82 m/s para el 2021. El valor medio obtenido para las dos fechas no supera una diferencia de 0.69 m/s. En el 2019, la temperatura varió de 25.75°C a 29.21°C y no se obtuvieron datos de salinidad. Para el 2021, la temperatura varió entre 26.88°C y 29.84°C, y los valores de salinidad, entre 11.36 y 35.44. En los mapas de las dos fechas coincide una zona de variación significativa de velocidad del sonido que se asoció a la desembocadura del río Mira.The present study establishes the horizontal and vertical variation of the sound speed in Tumaco Bay (department of Nariño, Colombia) and describes its behavior from data recorded in field surveys with the aim of identifying the effect of depth, temperature and salinity on its variability. Profiles with an approximate spatial resolution of 500m were distributed in the study area: 184 water column profiles for May 2019 and 165 profiles for April 2021. The results obtained show a variation in the sound speed between 1526.6 m/s and 1540.3 m/s for the 2019 profiles, and between 1518.5 m/s and 1542.82 m/s for 2021. The difference between the average values obtained for the two dates does not exceed 0.69 m/s. In 2019, the temperature ranged from 25.75°C to 29.21°C and no salinity data was obtained. For 2021, the temperature varied between 26.88°C and 29.84°C and the salinity values between 11.36 psu and 35.44 psu.     The Japan Coast Guard has been investigating radioactivity in the waters around Japan since 1959. The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake that occurred off the Pacific coast caused a tsunami. The TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was severely damaged and a radioactive accident occurred. Radioactive materials were released into the environment, flowed out from the coastlines of Niigata and Yamagata prefectures to the ocean, and transferred to the Notsuke Strait by ocean currents. By utilizing the half-lives of 134Cs and 137Cs, 137Cs of seafloor sediment could be separated into the concentration due to the global fallout and the concentration due to three accidents at TEPCOʼs Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. It was suggested that silt clay in the seafloor sediments selectively adsorb radioactive cesium.PublishedReferee

    Los saberes arraigados a las personas y sus comunidades hacen parte del proceso de conocimiento que las constituyen y que se encuentran expresadas en las prácticas sociales, conformadas por elementos globales y locales, tácitos y explícitos. De esta forma, esta investigación busca conocer y distinguir la importancia que poseen los conocimientos tradicionales de construcción naval artesanal y navegación dentro de la comunidad indígena Wayúu en la Media Guajira colombiana, como conocimientos que se verán expresados a lo largo de los complejos técnicos a través de las técnicas y tecnologías de construcción. Así mismo, es fundamental empezar a comprender las embarcaciones como actores sociales, que tienen la capacidad de configurarse y de influir, a partir de las múltiples actividades sociales que se desarrollan dentro de la comunidad. Puesto que terminan siendo la síntesis de la vida social, no solo de los constructores sino de los pescadores, ya que en ella es posible evidenciar la existencia de unos conocimientos que les fueron transmitidos, ya sea por sus familiares o amigos. Todo esto se convierte en la expresión final de las relaciones culturales entre los objetos y sus creadores o portadores, permitiendo comprender el papel que cumplen estos saberes dentro de las comunidades y la importancia que poseen los conocimientos tradicionales.The knowledge rooted in people and their communities is part of the knowledge process that constitutes them and that is expressed in social practices, these conformed by global and local, tacit and explicit elements. In this way, this research seeks to know and distinguish the importance of traditional knowledge of artisanal shipbuilding and navigation within the Wayúu indigenous community in the Colombian Guajira Media, as knowledge that will be expressed throughout the technical complexes through of construction techniques and technologies. Likewise, it is essential to begin to understand boats as social actors, who have the ability to configure and influence, based on the multiple social activities that take place within the community. Since they end up being the synthesis of the social life not only of the builders but of the fishermen, since in it is possible to evidence the existence of knowledge that was transmitted to them either by their relatives or friends. All of this becomes the final expression of the cultural relations between objects and their creators or carriers, allowing us to understand the role that this knowledge plays within communities and the importance of traditional knowledge.PublishedNot Know

    The Seychelles Fisheries Statistical Report is a comprehensive source of information for the commercial fishing industry, fisheries managers, policymakers, and researchers. Since 2014 the report has presented annual updates of fisheries statistics on a bi-annual basis. The report contains data on the volume of production from Seychelles artisanal, semi-industrial, industrial longline and purse seine fishery by vessel type, species, and geographical locations. Profiles of each fishery, summary of data collection and processing procedures are also provided. Readers should note that in 2017 SFA implemented a new data management system for artisanal fishery which created delays in data capture and the delays in publication of this report. SFA wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the delay of this publication. Information on recreational, sea cucumber, lobster and sport fishery is not included in this current edition but will be included progressively in future editions. As a result, the publication gives only a partial estimate of the total volume of local fishery production. Readers should note that some figures presented in this bulletin may be different to previously published because these figures may have been revised following thorough verifications carried out on the data following database upgrading, new data received that were previously missing, revised EEZ shape file used or data validation using VMS data. Also, some of the figures presented may be subject to revision (usually upwards) as more data become available. Since space is a limiting factor in some tables, flag country appearing in these tables is included based on their total catch. The remaining flags are classified under “OTHERS”.     La foca leopardo (Hydrurga leptonyx) es una especie poco estudiada a nivel genético. Con el fin de realizar la primera evaluación de la diversidad genética de esta especie en la costa de Danco (Península Antártica), se secuenció 423 pb de la Región Control del ADN mitocondrial (ADNmt-CR) de 13 muestras de sangre colectadas en la Base Primavera (62º15’S, 58º39’W) durante el verano austral 2011-2012. Los resultados mostraron una alta diversidad de haplotipos (h = 0.99), con varios haplotipos divergentes. Nuestros hallazgos genéticos sugieren que las focas leopardo de la costa de Danco podrían representar diferentes filogrupos; sin embargo, es necesario incluir más marcadores genéticos para confirmar esta hipótesis.The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is a genetically low-studied species. In order to conduct the first genetic diversity assessment of this species in Danco Coast (Antarctic Peninsula), 423 bp of the mitochondrial DNA Control Region (mtDNA-CR) was sequenced from 13 blood samples collected in Primavera Base (62º15’S, 58º39’W) during the 2011-2012 austral summer. Our results showed high haplotype diversity (h = 0.99), with various divergent haplotypes. Our findings suggest that leopard seals in the Danco Coast could represent different phylogroups; however, including more genetic markers are needed to confirm this hypothesis.PublishedReferee
