Selectivity of shrimp cast net in artisanal fisheries in the lagoon system of the Cauto river, Cuba.
La pesca artesanal en el sistema lagunar del río Cauto es una actividad económica importante que agrupa un alto número de pescadores. Esta se realiza con atarraya de las cuales se determinó la composición por talla de las capturas, la selectividad de las mallas con que están confeccionadas, así como la talla media de selección (L50) de aquellas con malla de 12 y 15 mm. El ajuste a la curva logística mostró que la L50 varió de 5,96 cm en la malla de 12 mm a 6,69 cm en la correspondiente a 15 mm. Los valores del rango de selección (RS) variaron entre 1,15 y 2,07 para la malla de 12 mm y 15 mm respectivamente. Los valores del factor de selección (FS) toman valores entre 4,96 y 4,46 para las mallas de 12 y 15 mm. Los resultados obtenidos muestran la secuencialidad de la pesquería de camarón, impactando negativamente en la población.Artisanal fishing in the lagoon system of the Cauto River is an important economic activity that brings together a large number of fishermen. This is done with cast nets whose size composition, the selectivity of the mesh, as well as the average selection size (L50) of those with 12 and 15 mm mesh size. The adjustment to the logistic curve showed that the L50 varied from 5,96 in the 12 mm mesh to 6,69 in the 15 mm mesh. The values of the selection range (RS) varied between 1,15 and 2,07 for the 12 mm and 15 mm mesh, respectively. While the values of the selection factor (FS) take values between 4,96 and 4,46 for the mesh of 12 and 15 mm. Baseline study on the freshwater ornamental fish industry in Palawan, Philippines.
The status of both freshwater and marine ornamental fish industries in the Philippines has been assessed in 2019; however, Palawan was excluded due to the unavailability of data with regard to the ornamental fish trade. Hence, this study collected baseline data on the freshwater ornamental fish industry specifically the distribution of freshwater ornamental fish hobbyists, socio-demographic profile of the respondents, the key players involved in the market chain, classification and number of fish species and strains involved, and the challenges (economic and scientific) and opportunities encountered by the key players which could be used for the improvement and development of the ornamental fish sector in Palawan. A poll was conducted in order to obtain information on the general location of the ornamental fish hobbyists in Palawan in which 77 individuals participated. An online survey form was then sent to participants, however, only 40 responded. The freshwater ornamental fish hobbyists were distributed in 11 localities of Palawan. Key players involved in the market chain of freshwater ornamental fish were categorized as producers, traders, and sellers. Twelve freshwater ornamental fish species with 83 strains/varieties were involved, dominated by the Siamese fighting fish and guppy. Fisheries Statistical Report Year 2020
The Seychelles Fisheries Statistical Report is a comprehensive source of information for the commercial fishing industry, fisheries managers, policymakers, and researchers. Since 2014 the report has presented annual updates of fisheries statistics on a bi-annual basis. The report contains data on the volume of production from Seychelles artisanal, semi-industrial, industrial longline and purse seine fishery by vessel type, species, and geographical locations. Profiles of each fishery, summary of data collection and processing procedures are also provided. Readers should note that in 2017 SFA implemented a new data management system for artisanal fishery which created delays in data capture and the delays in publication of this report. SFA wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the delay of this publication. Information on recreational, sea cucumber, lobster and sport fishery is not included in this current edition but will be included progressively in future editions. As a result, the publication gives only a partial estimate of the total volume of local fishery production. Readers should note that some figures presented in this bulletin may be different to previously published because these figures may have been revised following thorough verifications carried out on the data following database upgrading, new data received that were previously missing, revised EEZ shape file used or data validation using VMS data. Also, some of the figures presented may be subject to revision (usually upwards) as more data become available. Since space is a limiting factor in some tables, flag country appearing in these tables is included based on their total catch. The remaining flags are classified under “OTHERS”. Flag countries with only one vessel are automatically placed under “OTHERS” to preserve the confidentiality of data pertaining to the vessel.PublishedReferee
Cartilla mareográfica de Colombia, región Caribe 2023
La Dirección General Marítima – Dimar y el Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales – Ideam han aunado esfuerzos institucionales para la construcción de las cartillas mareográficas de pronósticos de pleamares y bajamares correspondientes al año 2023 para la costa Pacífica colombiana. Lo anterior, a partir de procesos estadísticos de control de calidad rigurosos y referencias verticales aplicadas a las mediciones locales, conforme a las recomendaciones y metodologías con estándares internacionales. La Autoridad Marítima Colombiana - Dimar, como representante oficial de Colombia ante la Organización Hidrográfica Internacional - OHI y con el fin de garantizar una seguridad integral en todas las actividades que se desarrollan en aguas jurisdiccionales nacionales, tanto en la costa Pacífica como en la costa Caribe y sus áreas insulares, ha desplegado la red de monitoreo más grande de Colombia para la recolección, estudio y análisis de parámetros oceanográficos y de meteorología marina (conocida como la RedMpomm), con sensores de última tecnología que miden diferentes parámetros, incluyendo el nivel del mar. Esta información es empleada en la generación de productos técnicos, científicos y operacionales, que contribuyen al desarrollo de los intereses marítimos, fluviales y de las comunidades costeras del país. Dentro de los objetivos institucionales del Ideam está mantener en funcionamiento la red de estaciones mareográficas y meteomarinas del país y, en el Marco Nacional de Servicios Climáticos, ofrecer información sobre pronósticos, predicciones climáticas y alertas relacionados con eventos hidrometeorológicos, y otros servicios a los distintos sectores de la economía nacional (industrial, energético, agropecuario, minero, forestal, pesquero y de servicios de infraestructura), el turismo y el transporte (aéreo, fluvial, marítimo, ferroviario y carretero). De esta manera, la cartilla mareográfica se presenta a la comunidad como resultado de una cooperación interinstitucional alineada a los objetivos misionales de cada entidad, y se convierte en insumo para la toma de decisiones y el planeamiento estratégico.PublishedNot Know
Proceedings of the 2021 Annual Meeting of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research, 47th SCOR Annual Meeting: Virtual Meeting - October 2021
This proceeding summarizes the discussions during the 2021 SCOR Annual Meeting held virtually between the 26-28 of October of 2021. Following a decision from the SCOR Executive, this proceeding also provides the links for all the background information for the meeting, including the proposals for new working groups, the reports from current SCOR working groups, projects, capacity development activities, and the reports of affiliated and partner organizations all of which were traditionally included in the SCOR Annual meeting background book until 2019. All of these can also be accessed online through the SCOR website at: https://scor-int.org/events/scor-annual-meeting-2021/. The SCOR 2021 Annual Meeting was attended by more than 200 participants from 56 countries representing all continents. Forty Nominated members from 24 SCOR National Committees and the three affiliated bodies to the Executive Committee (IABO, IAPSO, IAMAS) attended the meeting. All SCOR Working Groups, research, infrastructural, and affiliated projects, along with the affiliated and partner organizations reported on their activities. Some of the main highlights of the SCOR 2021 Annual Meeting include: (1) the approval of three new Working Groups (WGs), (2) to secure NSF funding to continue to support working group and project activities, and (3) the endorsement of SCOR working group and project activities by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The three new WGs proposals approved were: (1) Coupling of ocean-ice-atmosphere processes: from sea-Ice biogeochemistry to aerosols and Clouds (CIce2Clouds), co-chaired by Nadja Steiner (Canada) and Megan Willis (USA), (2) CoNCENSUS: Advancing standardisation of COastal and Nearshore demersal fish visual CENSUS techniques, co-chaired by Anthony Bernard (South Africa) and Rick D. Stuart-Smith (Australia), and (3) Mixotrophy in the Oceans – Novel Experimental designs and Tools for a new trophic paradigm (MixONET), co-chaired by Aditee Mitra (UK) and George McManus (USA). SCOR continued to support capacity development activities by extending support to the visiting scholars approved for travel in 2020 and approving four new scholars to travel in 2021 or until travel is possible again. SCOR has continued to approve funding applications from conference organizers to support travel for scientists from developing countries to attend these conferences when they are rescheduled. These commitments will be honored by SCOR when travel is reinitiated. The 2022 SCOR meeting is scheduled for the first week of October 2022 in Busan, Korea, hosted by the Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIOST), and will follow the PICES meeting which will take place in the same location the week before. The 2023 SCOR meeting is scheduled to take place in Guayaquil, Ecuador, hosted by the Instituto Oceanográfico y Antártico de la Armada del Ecuador (INOCAR) between September-October. La pêche artisanale sénégalaise à l’épreuve de la cogestion : le local désormais utilisé comme échelle de planification des politiques de pêche
L’objectif de cet article est de présenter les potentiels et les limites de la cogestion des pêcheries artisanales au Sénégal. La méthode a consisté à mener un long travail d’investigation dans les différents conseils locaux de pêche artisanale (CLPA) implantés le long de la côte sénégalaise. Les outils de la collecte soumis aux acteurs de la pêche et aux dirigeants des CLPA se sont focalisés sur 40 indicateurs inspirés de la littérature scientifique. Ces indicateurs sont répartis en trois catégories : « Institutions et gouvernance », « Systèmes naturels » et « Personnes et moyens de subsistance ». Ils couvrent toutes les dimensions de la cogestion telle que mise en oeuvre au Sénégal. L’analyse révèle que les CLPA peinent à assumer pleinement le rôle de leadership qui leur est assigné par l’État et leur base sociale. Compte tenu de leur dépendance financière vis-à-vis de l’État et des partenaires de développement, leur capacité d’influence reste faible et leur positionnement sociopolitique, limité. Cette faible affirmation à l’échelle locale est également liée à la fragilité de leur base organisationnelle, qui compromet finalement leur performance économique et écologique. Le cadre de gouvernance locale est marqué par la superposition de plusieurs entités locales (groupements d’intérêt économique [GIE] et associations) sans coordination qui évoluent dans une logique de concurrence. Malgré ces limites d’ordre principalement organisationnel et économique, la cogestion de la pêche artisanale présente des potentialités. En plus de se positionner comme un nouveau cadre local pour la gestion des pêches, les CLPA ont entamé une recomposition de l’architecture institutionnelle locale et constituent des espaces de construction d’initiatives techniques (pour la durabilité des ressources halieutiques) et socioéconomiques (pour l’amélioration des moyens d’existence des acteurs de la pêche). Globalement, la gouvernance des pêches au Sénégal est partagée entre une gestion directive qui s’effrite progressivement et une nouvelle forme, la cogestion, qui tarde à s’imposer efficacement.The objective of this article is to present the potential and limits of the co-management of artisanal fisheries in Senegal. The method consisted of carrying out extensive investigation work in the various local artisanal fishing councils (CLPAs) established along the Senegalese coast. The interview guide and questionnaire submitted to fishery stakeholders and CLPA leaders focused on 40 indicators inspired by scientific literature. These indicators are div- ided into three categories : “governance”, “natural systems” and “populations and liveli- hoods”. They cover all dimensions of co-management as implemented in Senegal. The analysis reveals that the CLPAs struggle to fully assume the leadership role assigned to them by the State and their social base. Given their financial dependence on the State and development partners, they have little capacity for influence and limited socio-political posi- tioning. This weak self-assertion at the local level is also linked to the fragility of their organ- izational base, which ultimately compromises their economic and ecological performance. The local governance framework is characterized by the superposition of several local enti- ties (economic interest groups [EIG] and associations) that lack any coordination and operate in a logic of competition. Despite these limitations, which are mainly organizational and economic in nature, the co-management of artisanal fishing has potential. Beyond position- ing themselves as a new local framework for fishery management, the CLPAs have started restructuring the local institutional architecture and offer spaces where to build initiatives, both technical (to ensure the sustainability of fishery resources) and socioeconomic (to improve the livelihoods of fishing stakeholders). Workshop to Scope Assessment Methods to Set Thresholds (WKBENTH2)
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires Member States to achieve good environmental status (GES) across their marine waters. The EU have requested ICES to advise on methods for assessing adverse effects on seabed habitats, through selection of relevant indicators for the assessment of benthic habitats and seafloor integrity and associated threshold values for GES in relation to Descriptor 6 – Seabed integrity under the MFSD. Two sets of criteria were developed to evaluate indicators and thresholds respectively for evaluation of suitability for assessing GES. 16 indicator and 12 threshold criteria were compiled and weighted by importance. The criteria were designed for evaluation at a subregional or regional level. The scoring for these criteria is meant as a guidance when choosing indicators and thresholds, so failure to meet one criterion will not necessarily prevent the use of the indicator or thresh-old in an assessment. The framework was evaluated for 6 indicators and for 11 methods for setting thresholds. The criteria were found to be useful for evaluation both indicators and thresholds. The process works most consistently when there are experts in the group on both the criteria themselves and on the indicators and thresholds. The MFSD Descriptor 6 determination of GES needs both a quality threshold (when are seabed habitats in a good state in a specific location) and an extent threshold (proportion of the assessment area that needs to have seabed habitats in good state). Eleven different methods for setting thresholds were identified, of which more are suitable for setting quality than for extent thresholds. Preferred methods identified an ecologically-motivated difference between a good and de-graded state, rather than another transition. Quality thresholds based on the lower boundary of the range of natural variation were considered most promising. This approach can be used for most, but not all, indicators. The WK collated a standardized dataset to test the specificity, sensitivity and/or responsiveness of sampling-based benthic indicators to pressure gradients for evaluation by WKBENTH3. Risk-based methods will be evaluated as maps and by scored sensitivity and impact score per MSFD habitat type and subdivision. Participants provided input into the selection of indicators for the compilation of indicators. A template was developed for documenting the characteristics of each indicator to facilitate the evaluation of the indicators.ICESPublishedNon Referee
Effects of different intensities of aquaculture occupation on the taxonomic and functional structure of fish assemblages in neotropical streams.
Biological invasion processes are complex phenomena and comprise one of the greatest challenges for the conservation of biodiversity in continental aquatic environments. The pressure of propagules, i.e., the number of non-native individuals released and the number of release events, is among the different mechanisms involved in these decisive processes for the successful establishment of non-native species. In this scenario, aquaculture is an important source of propagules of species with high invasive potential, such as Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), as accidental escapes and intentional releases from production ponds are recurrent. Nine small streams, tributaries of the Piquiri River (Paraná, Brazil), were sampled to evaluate the effect of aquaculture on fish assemblages in neotropical streams. The watersheds of these streams differ in percentage of aquaculture occupation, and this difference was used as a proxy for propagule pressure of O. niloticus in natural environments. Therefore, the present research aimed to evaluate the effects of different intensities of aquaculture production of tilapia on the richness patterns, composition and structure of the ichthyofauna, testing the hypothesis that the increase in propagule pressure of this species alters the patterns of occurrence and abundance of assemblages, as well as discuss the effects of this species on the functional structure of ichthyofauna, observing the effect of aquaculture occupation on responses of functional diversity indexes and on dissimilarity patterns among the different streams. The results indicated that streams with no aquaculture occupation and with no presence of O. Niloticus had more similar compositions and differed in patterns of occurrence and distribution of ichthyofauna from streams under aquaculture activity. In addition, the presence of tilapia altered the functional diversity indexes in the streams, as the species presented more extreme traits that allow it to increase the functional space of receptor environments and promote greater niche differentiation. The results reinforce the potential of aquaculture as an important source of propagules of non-native species for natural environments and raise attention to the structuring power of tilapia on the taxonomic and functional composition of native ichthyofauna.Os processos de invasão biológica são fenômenos complexos e compreendem um dos maiores desafios para a conservação da biodiversidade em ambientes aquáticoscontinentais. Dentre os diferentes mecanismos envolvidos nesses processos, a pressão de propágulos, isto é, o número de indivíduos não nativos liberados e o número de eventos de liberação são determinantes no sucesso de estabelecimento de espécies não nativas. Neste cenário, a aquicultura se insere como uma importante fonte de propágulos de espécies com alto potencial invasor, a exemplo da Tilápia do Nilo, Oreochromis niloticus, uma vez que os escapes acidentais e as solturas intencionais dos tanques de produção são recorrentes. A fim de avaliar a influênciada aquiculturasobre as assembleias de peixes em riachos Neotropicais, nove riachos de pequena ordem,afluentes do rio Piquiriforam amostrados. Estes riachosdiferem quanto a porcentagem de ocupação aquícola emsuas microbacias, sendo essa diferença utilizada como um proxyda pressão de propágulos de O. niloticuspara ambientes naturais. Sendo assim, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivosavaliar os efeitos de diferentes intensidades deprodução aquícolada tilápiasobre os padrões de riqueza,composição eestrutura da ictiofauna, testando-se a hipótese de que o aumento da pressão de propágulos dessa espécie alteraos padrões deocorrência e deabundância das assembleias, bem comodiscutir os efeitosdessa mesma espécie sobre a estrutura funcional da ictiofauna, observando-se a influência da ocupação aquícola nas respostas dos índices de diversidade funcional e nos padrões de dissimilaridade entre os diferentes riachos. Os resultados indicaramqueriachos sem ocupação aquícola e sem a presença deO. niloticusforammais similares em suas composiçõese diferiramnospadrões de ocorrência e distribuição da ictiofauna dos riachos com atividade aquícola. Observou-se também a presença da espécie alterou os índices de diversidade funcional entre os riachos, por apresentar traços mais extremos que lhe permitem aumentar o espaço funcional dos ambientes receptores e promover maior diferenciação de nicho. Os resultados reforçam o potencial da aquicultura como uma fonte importante de propágulos de espécies não nativas para ambientes naturais e atentam para o poder estruturador da tilápia sobre a composição taxonômica e funcional da ictiofauna nativa.Ph

Con el nuevo Plan de Trabajo 2021-2025 del CTN Diocean y con un equipo de trabajo maduro y comprometido, este comité continuará con la articulación de esfuerzos y capacidades institucionales en la adecuada gestión de datos oceánicos e información marina colombiana, para facilitar el intercambio y acceso a estos recursos de la nación. Son varios retos los que tendrá en sus manos, entre ellos continuar promoviendo el acceso abierto y oportuno, el uso y reutilización de los datos e información oceánicos del país, así como propender por la ampliación de capacidades y divulgación de los sistemas de información nacionales. En esta primera entrega de la ejecución del plan de trabajo del CTN Diocean, como acciones del Decenio, se describirán iniciativas de datos para la toma de decisiones informadas desarrolladas en el 2021, así como las primeras métricas acordadas en el nivel nacional sobre acceso y uso de datos e información para el periodo 2019-2020; en cuanto a la aplicación de estándares y buenas prácticas, se mostrarán experiencias sobre datos espaciales oceánicos de acceso abierto; por su parte, la Coordinación Nacional del programa para el Intercambio Internacional de Datos e Información Oceanográfica (IODE), presentará cifras sobre el posicionamiento de Colombia en los catálogos internacionales Aquadocs, OceanExpert y ODISCat, así como información de interés de la gestión de información marina y la gestión de datos oceanográficos en el país.
