The results of investigation of the pollution of the water and bottom sediments of the Caucasian Shelf in the Black Sea by heavy metals (copper, zinc, lead, cadmium, mercury) and arsenic, as well as their content in the Black Sea turbot Scophthalmus maeoticus (Pallas, 1814) are presented for 1995–2020. In the water and turbot, the determination of Zn, Cu, Pb, As, and Cd has been conducted using the method of atomic absorption with electrothermal atomization; mercury in all components of the ecosystems was measured using the method of atomic absorption with “cold steam”; in the bottom sediments, the content of Zn, Cu, Pb and As was identified using X-ray fluorescence method. In 1995–2020, in some water samples, the concentrations of zinc, copper and mercury exceeded the maximum permissible level established for the water bodies of fisheries importance, while the lead and cadmium were below it. The arsenic content during the entire observation period was extremely low. A noticeable decrease in the concentrations of zinc, lead and copper in the shelf waters of the Black Sea in the present period as compared with the years of the greatest pollution (1995–2002) was recorded. In the bottom sediments, the content of lead, zinc and mercury exceeded their content in the earth's crust for several years; for arsenic, the excess was recorded throughout the entire observation period. This mostly results from the peculiarities of the granulometric composition of the shelf bottom and, to a much lesser extent, from anthropogenic influence. The differences in the bioaccumulation of heavy metals and arsenic in the organs of the Black Sea turbot are shown. Out of the identified elements, only lead, mercury and arsenic in isolated cases exceeded the permissible level in the organs of the turbot in some years. PublishedReferee

This paper presents the results of analytical processing of the data collected over the course of the 2020/2021 fishing season on the ecological structure and fishing biological parameters of the European anchovy (E. encrasicolus L., 1758), wintering in the coastal waters of Abkhazia. The dynamic parameters of the Azov and Black Sea stocks of the European anchovy have also been analyzed, and a comparative analysis of the main biometric parameters has been carried out. This work is aimed at the assessment of the state of migratory anchovy aggregations in winter based on the results of the 2020/2021 fishing season and identification of the changes in the main population parameters with application of the generally accepted ichthyological methods. Following the data on the anchovy catches for the investigated period, this paper presents the dynamics of the length–age catch composition and intra-annual patterns of the anchovy fishery for the both forms (Black Sea and Azov Sea). The changes in population characteristics as evidenced from the catch composition as compared to the previous years were recorded, as well as the spatial distribution of the anchovy aggregations wintering in the Abkhazian Black Sea. The monthly absolute values are given for the catch sizes, as well as their fluctuations. The results showing the main dynamic changes in the wintering aggregations of anchovy have been obtained; they characterized the status of the anchovy population as stable with a tendency for low biomass development. It provides the basis for a conclusion that an increase in fishing effort in the next 2–3 years is unacceptable. PublishedReferee

We report an unusual high density of the foureye butterflyfish (Chaetodon capistratus) in Punta Francés coral reef, Isle of Youth, Cuba. Foureye butterflyfish were swimming together in associations of 10 to 34 individuals throughout a survey carried out on spur and groove habitat, in July, 2014. This species is commonly observed single or in pairs in the Caribbean coral reefs, tending to contribute significantly to the reef fish abundance in the region. We consider important to record this particular behavior, despite we are unable to explain the causes with the current available data.PublishedReferee

An index based on physico-chemical, fish (fish index), invertebrates, algae, or phytoplankton has been used to evaluate the quality of an aquatic environment. The fish community is considered as the trophic chain's ultimate integrator in the fish index. The "rapid diagnosis" method developed by CEMAGREF in 1990 and adapted to the Algerian condition by Boudjenah in 2002 is presented in this work for the first time, and for the second time, the theoretical production evaluation method has been applied to the data collected from the bibliography. This index's analysis helps us to position the lake's trophic level inside the range of trophic levels, including oligotrophic, mesotrophic, and eutrophic (Barbe et al, 1990). With the help of this categorization, we can finally plan and maximize the utilization of Lake BOUKOURDANE by calculating its productivity.PublishedReferee

    No full text
New information on the reproductive biology of Pagellus bellottii (Steindachner, 1882) a Sparid fish in Senegalese waters is provided in this study. Little aspects on the reproductive biology of this fish are reported in Senegal, West Africa. The objective of the study is to examine the length-weight relationship, the condition factor and the reproductive parameters of P. bellottii from the Senegalese waters. A total of 360 specimens (males = 197 and females = 163) bought from fishermen were used for the study. Specimens were collected monthly (thirty individuals per month) from October 2019 to September 2020 from Soumbedioune of Western part of Dakar, Senegal. Each individual was measured with an ichthyometer and weighed with a precision balance. For dissected individuals, sex was determined by macroscopic observation of the gonads. The gonads were extracted to calculate the Gonadosomatic Index. The length-weight relationship gave a negative allometric growth for both sexes. The value of “k” being greater than 1; the species was in good condition in this environment. The sex ratio (1:0.82) was favourable to males. The reproductive period was from March to June with a spawning peak in April for both sexes. Males and females had size at first sexual maturity at 178- and 180-mm total length, respectively. Males matured at smaller sizes than females. The data obtained in this study on some aspects of the reproductive biology of P. bellottii will be essential for better management of fish stocks in Senegal and in the sub-regionPublishedReferee
