The meso-predator Panulirus argus has an impact on the populations of benthic mollusks that constitute its food. In the present study, composition of P. argus diet and predation pressure exerted on gastropods population from Santa Cruz del Sur (SCrso) and Gulf of Batabanó (GB) fishing regions, Cuba, were determined. Gastropod density and diversity were quantified by trawling, which based on the abundance of lobsters reported for each region, served to estimate the impact of predation on gastropod community. 250 lobsters were captured: 62 from SCrso in October 2012, 136 from GB in February 2014 and 52 from GB in July 2018. The void was similar in SCrso (38.7%) and GB (38.0%). Thirteen trophic categories were recorded, the most frequent: operculums (48.8%), crustacean remains (48.0%), shell remains (47.2%) and plant remains (35.0%), showing that the diet is mainly composed of mollusks and crustaceans. The frequency of occurrence of plant remains suggests nonaccidental consumption. Seventeen species of mollusks were identified, being Tegula fasciata, Phrontis antillarum, Aliger gigas, Turbo castanea and Chione cancellata the most frequent. The most predated species were T. fasciata (3.36), P. antillarum (0.54) and A. gigas (0.45). Predation pressure was 0.92 gastropods lobster-1 in SCrso and 3.31 gastropods lobster-1 in GB, which according to the respective densities of lobsters (3,546 lobsters km-2 and 3,837 lobsters km-2) and gastropods (3.76 ind. m-2 and 1.45 ind. m-2), allowed estimating that lobsters consume 0.087% of the gastropod community in SCrso and 0.887% in GB. Evidence of cannibalism was also found.

In the expenses associated with the cultivation of microalgae, the use of culture media such as Guillard (f/2) represents between 30-40 % of the operating costs and these can be reduced up to seven times using agricultural fertilizers, since they are cheap and contain the essential nutrients for the growth of microalgae. A fertilizer that could be used in this branch of aquaculture is VIUSID agro, a plant growth promoter. For this, the effect of the agricultural biostimulant VIUSID agro on the growth of the microalgae Dunaliella salina and Thalassiosira sp., which is the objective of our study, was evaluated. The research was carried out in the live food production laboratory at the Centro de Investigaciones Pesqueras (CIP). Two different concentrations of VIUSID agro were evaluated: 0,5 mL and 1 mL that were added to 2 000 mL of sterile seawater to be used as a culture medium and the growth of the microalgae was compared with the results obtained in the Guillard medium (f/2), used as a control. Daily counts were made under a light microscope with a Neubauer grid-equipped hematocytometer and the concentration of cells per milliliter was determined. As a result, greater growth of both microalgae was obtained in the control medium and it was much higher than that of the treatments used. These results are due to the low nitrogen content of VIUSID agro and the presence of heavy metals in higher concentrations than those that can be tolerated by the microalgae studied, which limited their growth.PublishedReferee

Hurricane Irma hit the northeast keys of Villa Clara on September 9, 2017. The vast region and the inaccessibility to many places of its geography, prevented an accurate assessment of the effects on the territory. Remote sensing and image processing using QGIS provide the necessary tools for image estimation in our research. The current distribution of natural habitats was determined, selecting the main plant covers as the object of study. With the use of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) the degradation-resilience is estimated in the pe- riod 2016-2021. The processes of defoliation and regrowth are the basic signals in these evaluations. The severe effects of the hurricane are estimated at 82% of the mangrove (M), 50% of the dry evergreen forest (BSV) and 29% of the xe- romorphic scrub (MX). The BSV and MX showed a very fast recovery, compared to the M. The dominance of Rhi- zophora mangle in this affected habitat is decisive in the deayed resilience. 58% of mangroves recovered 3.6 years after the hurricane suggest planning restoration strategies at the identified critical sites.PublishedReferee

Method Standardization and Guidance Value Determination for Regulation on Formaldehyde in Round Scad (Decapterus spp.).

There are reports of traded Galunggong (Fil.), Decapterus spp., adulterated with formaldehyde (FA) to lengthen shelf life. FA is a noxious substance with negative repercussions to general consumer health. This warrants the determination of a guidance value due to a lack of a local regulatory value specific to Galunggong amidst rising Filipino public concern in the wake of importations complicated by the natural occurrence of FA in the marine fish post-mortem. Comparisons were made on FA levels of fish treated with different conditions exposure and with colorimetric measurements using 405 nm and 412 nm via Nash’s method optimized for a fish matrix with no significant difference in measurement to at most 30 ppm FA in an aqueous matrix. There is also no significant difference in FA content of samples measured immediately from those frozen overnight. Therefore, in line with the regulatory mandates of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) of the Department of Agriculture (Republic of the Philippines), a guidance value of 46.24 μg FA/g of Galunggong or 46.24 ppm is suggested, which is obtained from FA measurements of fish subjected to minimal anthropogenic treatments in different conditions of adulteration. Samples from different Metro Manila wet markets serve as the baseline. The guidance value is suggested to be used as a reference for regulatory purposes and can be improved with a more widespread sampling of fish from landing to selling.PublishedReferee

Rotifers are common in fresh and brackish water bodies, in coastal areas of the seas, and can be an effective tool for analyzing the state of the environment. The ability of rotifers to adapt to unfavourable environmental conditions has been considered in the course of studying the species composition of rotifers in a fish pond near Moscow under the conditions of the supply of organic artificial food for fish and changes in the temperature regime of water. During the period of increased temperature of the water (21–25 °C) and decrease in the concentration of dissolved oxygen from the surface to the bottom layers of water from 3.8 to 0.2 mgO2/L in early July, Asplanchna priodonta helvetica, Brachionus angularis angularis and Brachionus calyciflorus dominated in the pond (98–100 % of the abundance and 99–100 % of the biomass of rotifers). During the period of elevated temperatures, the turbidity indices in the upper layer (0.2–0.5 m) were an order of magnitude lower than those in the deeper layers of the reservoir. Bacteria and tiny particles served as food for rotifers. The temperature of 18–25 °C was favourable for the development of B. angularis angularis in the fish pond. At a temperature of 18 °C, its abundance reached 1,500 ind./L (70 % of the abundance of rotifers). In August, when the temperature of the water column decreased from 20 to 18 °C, the biomass of A. priodonta helvetica changed from 0.3 to 9.5 mg/L (99 % of the biomass of rotifers). Polyarthra vulgaris dominated among small rotifers. During the period of low temperatures, the biomass of rotifers increased to 20 mg/L; its basis was A. priodonta helvetica. Rotifers are able to adapt to conditions of high organic input in a wide range of temperatures and participate in the restoration of water quality in a fish pond. PublishedReferee

Vertical distribution of biogenic elements in Gelendzhik area in 2019 has been presented. Hydrochemical criteria for typification of the Azov limans of the Krasnodar Territory as the spawning grounds for semi-anadromous fish species have been enlisted. Use of the thermohaline method for determining the quasi-heterogeneity of the water masses in the Azov Sea is discussed. Age composition and linear growth of the invasive ark clam species (Anadara kagoshimensis (Tokunaga, 1906)) in the Kerch Strait have been estimated. Effect of different doses of pituitary hormone on the reproductive performance of shemaya females (Alburnus leobergi, Freyhof & Kottelat, 2007) has been studied. Heavy metals and arsenic in water, bottom sediments and Black Sea turbot (Scophthalmus maeoticus, Pall., 1814) in the Caucasian Shelf area in the Black Sea (1995–2020) have been traced. Exotic fish species off the Black Sea coast of the Krasnodar Territory are presented. Problems of using riverbed ponds in aquaculture (in the context of recent legislative changes) are considered.PublishedReferee

Ecological Sustainability Index of hydrographic sub-basins (ESI-sb): for the management of the Upper Paraná River, Brazil.

    No full text
The assessment of sustainable development in sub-watersheds plays a central role in rationalizing the decisions taken. A promising form of average indicators of this development is through indicators, and when many are used, they are usually aggregated into indices, which provide a simplified and multidimensional view of the system under analysis. Several sustainability indices for watersheds are proposed in the literature. However, incorporation of extraordinary indicators, that biodiversity, a gap is still a major upgrade. Therefore, the use of biodiversity indicators as representative of the environmental dimension constitutes an advance on the indices presented in the literature recently. The objective was to evaluate the sustainability gradient in the hydrographic basins of the Upper Paraná River, through an eco-environmental sustainability index of hydrographic sub-basins (ISE-sb) that incorporates protected ecological. For this purpose, the indicators selected based on the propositions of Agenda 2030 were identified in four dimensions of sustainability, economic, economic, environmental and thought through a process of sustainability: normal and social. Then, the importance of the indicators was considered, using the multi-criteria analysis based on the Hierarchical Process Analysis (HP) method. The ISE-sb was calculated by means of the weighted media between the sub-indices that represent as dimensions. Finally, we apply the Gi* statistic to identify hotspots and coldspots. The results show that among the dimensions of sustainability, the highest was the one that presented a positive amount of low values. The regions located in the eastern portion, or serra do mar, southern portion, and the Federal District formed sustainability hotspots, while the sub-basins located in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais formed the sustainability coldposts. A sustainable spatial planning of the hydrographic sub-basins is recommended, adopting cold areas as priorities for sustainability. It highlights the main methodological limitation, a potential reproducibility of the tool in other spaces.

In the present work, we examined the relative growth of the caramote prawn Penaeus kerathurus collected from the commercial fishery of the El Mellah lagoon. All allometric relationships between the various body parts of both male and female prawns showed strong negative allometry. The findings of this study are consistent with those previously reported in numerous populations of Penaeus kerathurus and add a new piece of evidence for the genetic uniformity of the species over its Mediterranean range.Référence bibliographique, Figures, Tableau.PublishedReferee
