    Fluctuation of associated microbial with building reef corals Acropora sp. from Hang Rai, Ninh Thuan

    El Niño and the prolonged warm sea surface temperature significantly impacted coral reefs and caused coral bleaching in some parts of the world. This study evaluated the density of symbiotic algae and bacteria associated with the three coral species, namely Acropora hyacinthus, Acropora muricata, and Acropora robusta, collected in Hang Rai, Ninh Thuan in May, June, August 2016, and June 2017. The number of zooxanthellae with each coral species was statistically significant and correlated with several environmental factors, suggesting that symbiotic algae could play a key role in coral health. The number of associated microbial with the three coral species was significantly different; they tended to depend on sampling time rather than coral species-specific. At the time of ENSO (2016), the difference in the total associated bacteria with all three coral species was statistically significant. While the total number of related bacteria with all three species of coral collected in 2017 did not differ from the total of bacteria in ambient water. In conclusion, symbiotic algae tend to be species-specific, whereas bacteria fluctuate significantly over sampling time. Studying the molecular issues of microalgae, the presence, the role of some groups of bacteria involved in the N, C, P, and S cycles, and the influence of environmental parameters should also be encouraged to understand the relationship of coral holobiont better.PublishedReferee

    A new Blue Curriculum: a toolkit for policy-makers.

    This Toolkit aims to support policy-makers, curriculum developers and educational authorities in implementing Ocean Literacy into their national curriculum framework. Ocean Literacy is a tool, a framework and, more broadly, a mindset that forefronts the ocean in all aspects of life on Earth. As an approach for society as a whole, Ocean Literacy catalyzes actions to protect, conserve and sustainably use the ocean. The ocean is intrinsically connected to every part of the globe, to human livelihoods and to sociocultural practices. Understanding the ocean’s influence on us and our influence on the ocean is vital to develop and practice sustainable ways of living together. With the launch of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), this Toolkit builds on the momentum of the global Ocean Literacy movement to support Ocean Decade Outcome 7 – ’An inspiring and engaging ocean’. By synthesizing the latest research and case studies provided by Member States who currently are already promoting ocean literacy, this Toolkit aims to offer orientation on how to ‘blue’ curriculum and guidelines, in line with trends in education. Enhancing the knowledge and capacity of schools, teachers and learners about the ocean furthers society’s understanding of the importance of ocean life and ocean–human interactions.     Global change: assessing the interactions between CO2, eutrophication and non-native species in inland aquatic ecosystems.

    Ecosystems respond to the direct, indirect and synergistic effects of global changes caused by human activity. The understanding of the impacts of these changes and especially of the interaction between the impacts is still limited, especially for aquatic environments, because the interaction between them is rarely considered in environmental studies and assessments. We conducted a systematic literature review on the combination of the factors (i) increase of CO2, (ii) eutrophication and (iii) non-native species to verify how these factors have been considered in the context of climate change in freshwater ecosystems studies. Through the Web of Science database, we searched for articles published in English, up to 2020. Following the PRISMA protocol, 62 articles were analyzed. Only 8% of them addressed the combination of the three factors, among them, eutrophication was the most evaluated global change. Still, the studies do not seem to be looking for answers in a broad way and covering several ecological aspects, since they are concentrated in specific regions such as the Netherlands and United States (44%). Studies most focus on one type of environment, the lentic; use organisms from the base of the food-web; apply the experimental approach; evaluate one organizational level (community) and one response variable (biomass). We identified that the effect of the combination of factors is rarely classified with the terms synergistic and antagonist, even when the authors find these patterns. Our main findings reveal that little attention has been given to the combination of factors in freshwater ecosystems. We also find that when interactions are considered, non-native species tend to be favored and algal blooms intensified (74%). Considering that one of the major challenges is to understand how the interaction between global change factors will affect ecosystems, the combinations of factors still need to be prioritized in studies of aquatic ecosystems.Os ecossistemas respondem aos efeitos diretos, indiretos e sinérgicos das mudanças globais causadas pela atividade humana. A compreensão sobre os impactos dessas mudanças e principalmente da interação entres os impactos ainda é limitada, especialmente para os ambientes aquáticos, pois raramente a interação entre eles é considerada nos estudos e avaliações ambientais. Realizou-se uma revisão sistemática da literatura para verificar como a combinação dos fatores: (i) aumento da concentração de CO2, (ii) eutrofização, e (iii) espécies não nativas, está sendo abordada no contexto de mudanças globais em ecossistemas aquáticos continentais. Por meio da plataforma Web of Science, procurou-se por artigos publicados em inglês, até 2020. Seguindo o protocolo PRISMA, 62 artigos foram analisados. Apenas 8% dos estudos abordaram a combinação dos três fatores, dentre eles, a eutrofização foi o fator de mudança global mais avaliado. Ainda, os estudos não parecem estar buscando respostas de forma ampla e abrangendo diversos aspectos ecológicos, visto que, se concentram em regiões específicas, na Holanda e nos Estados Unidos (44%), focam em ambientes lênticos; utilizam majoritariamente organismos da base da cadeia trófica; são em sua maioria experimentais; e avaliam um nível organizacional (comunidade) e uma variável resposta (biomassa). Raramente o efeito da combinação dos fatores é classificado com os termos sinérgico e antagônico, mesmo quando os autores encontram esses padrões. Como resultados principais evidenciou-se que pouca atenção tem sido dada à combinação dos fatores nos ecossistemas aquáticos continentais. Os estudos analisados mostraram que quando consideradas as interações, espécies não nativas tendem a ser favorecidas e florações algais intensificadas (74%). Considerando que um dos maiores desafios atuais é compreender como a interação entre fatores de mudanças globais afetará os ecossistemas, a combinação de fatores ainda precisa ser priorizada nos estudos dos ecossistemas aquáticos.Master

    El ejercicio de historiar la evolución y el desempeño institucional de una entidad trae consigo aspectos simbólicos, materiales y memorables. De allí que abordar el recorrido temporal de siete décadas de existencia y transformación de la Dirección General Marítima, invite a levantar la mirada para divisar en el horizonte la aparición de procesos signifcativos, de mayor alcance y resultado, que ratifcan su devenir orgánico y funcional, y su razón de ser; a la vez que se vislumbran en retrospectiva los sucesos que fraguaron el presente de la Autoridad Marítima Colombiana. Es a partir de la identifcación histórica donde se recogen los protagonismos del proceso que, mediante algunas coyunturas y momentos decisivos, se confguran como puntos de partida o lugares de llegada, pero siempre en permanente cambio, que conllevan a la periodización como una forma de comprensión del desarrollo de la Entidad en un sentido histórico, no estrictamente lineal, mas sí dinámico, con hechos de duración dispar, que aparecen y sobresalen en varias épocas, y que cobran importancia y jerarquía de acción en tiempos determinados.     This article considers the key aspects of the industrial fisheries in the Azov and Black Sea Basin over the last five years. The factors, determining its parameters and performance, have been analyzed; they include technical specifications and operational characteristics of the vessels of various types engaged in fishing activity, time expenditures for fishing operations, catches per unit effort, fishing areas, the state of fish stocks, the number of vessels in operation, and other characteristics. Daily vessel activity reports on the main fishing targets—European anchovy, European sprat, Black Sea sprat, gobies — for 2017–2021 have been processed; comparative data on the performance of the vessels of various types, as well as the trends in industrial fishing parameters, are presented for the investigated period. A comparative analysis of the vessels engaged in industrial fishing in the Azov and Black Sea Basin and belonging to four types — medium fishing freezer trawler, small-size fishing trawler, receiving and transporting refrigerator, refrigerating fishing seiner-trawler — has been conducted. The most high-performance types of vessels for the target species have been identified. It is also noted that, in recent years, fishing seiners and refrigerating fishing seiner-trawlers started to be involved into the fishing of other commercial species: veined rapa whelk, Black Sea turbot, and horse mackerel (fishing with light attractor). The data presented will make it possible to assess the present status of the industrial fisheries.В статье рассмотрены основные аспекты судового промысла в Азово-Черноморском бассейне за последние пять лет. Проанализированы факторы, определяющие параметры и показатели судового промысла: технические и производственные характеристики судов различных типов, участвующих в промысле, временные затраты на ведение промысла, уловы на усилие, районы лова, состояние сырьевой базы объектов лова, количество судов, выходящих на промысел, и другие. Обработаны судовые суточные донесения о промысле основных объектов лова: хамсы, шпрота (кильки), тюльки, бычков — за 2017–2021 гг., приведены сравнительные данные по работе разных типов судов и тенденции изменения показателей судового промысла за этот период. Произведен сравнительный анализ использования на промысле в Азово-Черноморском бассейне рыболовных судов, выделенных в четыре группы: СРТМ, МРТР, ПТР и СЧС. Определены самые производительные типы судов для промысла основных объектов лова. Отмечено, что суда типа СЧС и РС в последние годы стали выходить на промысел и других объектов лова: рапаны, камбалы-калкан, — а также на светолов ставриды. Представленные материалы позволят оценить состояние судового промысла в современный период.PublishedReferee

    The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) has released the latest edition of its popular fisheries publication – SAMUDRA Report, its triannual journal on fisheries, communities and livelihoods. SAMUDRA Report No. 88, dated December 2022, has a special focus on the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022), with reports from several regions of how the year was celebrated as well as the ICSF Statements made at the IYAFA 2022 Asia Workshop. The editorial Comment points to how the abiding message of IYAFA 2022 should be that the social pillar of sustainable development ought to be strengthened to protect the future of lives and livelihoods in the small-scale fisheries subsector. A report from the United Nations Oceans Conference 2022 details how representatives of small-scale fishing communities – the most numerous ocean users –launched a Call to Action in a conerence that brought together two main protagonists: those clamouring for reforms in ocean governance to ‘Save Our Ocean’, and those clamouring for reforms to open up the ‘Blue Economy’.     Nutritionally, fish meat is identified as healthiest meat all over the world. Nutriments that ‎are essential for healthy diet can be easily drive from fishes. Beside fish meat there are ‎various type of derivatives that we can obtain from them. Economically fish industry is ‎considered as backbone for any country. Approximately, 45,000 species of helminth ‎parasites cause pathogenicity in vertebrate hosts that are known to man. Parasite that ‎belong to family Philometridae usually invade different body organs and cavities of ‎various fishes. Parasite that cause pathogenicity in reproductive organs of fish ultimately ‎cause disturbance in their release of reproductive hormones, mating behavior, difficulty ‎in spawning and ultimately number of fry production is declined.‎ This research was conducted on the nematode parasites of marine fish Epinephelus ‎bleekeri (Vaillant 1878) from Karachi coast during January,2021 to December,2021.     UNESCO/IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme: proposal for endorsement by IOC.

    This document has been prepared by Laura Kong, Director International tsunami Information Centre (ITIC). The Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme is an international community-based recognition programme developed by UNESCO/IOC. It aims to build resilient communities through awareness and preparedness strategies that will protect life, livelihoods and property from tsunamis in different regions. In June 2021, the IOC Assembly through IOC Decision A-31/3.4.1 (Warning Mitigation Systems for Ocean Hazards) approved the establishment of the IOC Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme, with the aim of making 100% of communities at risk of tsunami prepared for and resilient to tsunamis by 2030 through the implementation of the UNESCO/IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme and other initiatives. The implementation of the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme will be a key contribution to achieving the societal outcome ‘A Safe Ocean’ of the Ocean Decade.
