The finding of a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) on the coast of Cayo Francés, Sabana- Camagüey archipelago, is presented. This stranding is the first record for the species in the northern coast of Cuba, and the second documented in the country.Se presenta el hallazgo de un rorcual común (Balaenoptera physalus) en el litoral de Cayo Francés, archipiélago Sabana-Camagüey. Effects of invasive Cichla species on taxonomic and functional patterns of the upper Paraná River floodplain fish assemblage.
Invasive species cause loss of diversity in introduced sites. Species of the genus Cichla, popular tucunaré or peacock bass, are known for their voracious behavior that makes them a target in sport fishing and a predator with great negative impacts on introduced sites. There is a visible controversy around the species, since the scientific literature points out more and more impacts and the legislation seek ways to increase introductions, generating propagule pressure and prohibiting fishing in invaded places. In addition, mostpapers are punctual and in anthropized places such as reservoirs. Thus, we investigated how the abundance of Cichla individuals affects the assemblage of a floodplain over a time series. We investigated the effects of Cichla on taxonomic attributes of the assemblage (richness, evenness, diversity, abundance, and body length) and on species composition (beta diversity). In addition, the effects of Cichla on functional indices of the assemblage (functional richness, functional equitability, functional divergence, and functional dispersion) are investigated. Cichlaimpacts were evident in changes in beta and functional diversities. Cichla helped in the fauna homogenization process, increasing nestedness and reducing turnover. Additionally, it increased species with similar and more common traits and reduced species with rare traits, reducing dispersion, evenness, richness and functional divergence, it is worth noting that some results appeared with a delay, that is, some impacts make some time to appear in the invaded assembly.Our results showed that Cichlaspecies are capable of changing diversity patterns even in natural environments with great diversity of habitats and species, causing ecological losses that can lead to large economic and ecosystem losses.Espécies invasoras provocam perdas de diversidade nos locais introduzidos. As espécies do gênero Cichla, popular tucunaré, são conhecidas por um comportamento voraz que faz delas alvo na pesca esportiva e predadoras com grandes impactos negativos nos locais introduzidos. Existe polêmica em torno da espécie, uma vez que a literatura científica aponta cada vez mais impactos e a legislação busca formas de aumentar as introduções, gerando pressão de propágulos e proibindo a pesca nos locais invadidos.Adicionalmente, os trabalhos em sua maioria são pontuais e em locais antropizados como reservatórios. Investigou-se como a abundância de indivíduos de Cichla afetam a assembleia de uma planície de inundação ao longo de uma série temporal. Foram investigadosos efeitos da Cichla sobre atributos taxonômicos da assembleia (riqueza, equitabilidade, diversidade, abundância e comprimento do corpo) e sobre a composição das espécies (diversidade beta). Adicionalmente, são investigados os efeitos da Cichla sobre índices funcionais da assembleia (riqueza funcional, equitabilidade funcional, divergência funcional e dispersão funcional). Os impactos de Cichlaforam evidentes nas alterações das diversidades beta e funcional. Cichla auxiliou no processo de homogeneização da fauna, aumentando o aninhamento e reduzindo o turnover. Adicionalmente, aumentou as espécies com traços similares e mais comuns e reduziu as espécies com traços raros, reduzindo a dispersão, equitabilidade, riqueza e divergência funcional, vale ressaltar que alguns resultados apareceram com atraso, ou seja, alguns impactos podem levar um tempo para aparecer na assembleia invadida. Os resultados mostraram que as espécies de Cichla são capazes de alterar padrões de diversidade mesmo em ambientes naturais com grande diversidade de hábitats e espécies, causando perdas ecológicas que acarretam grandes perdas econômicas e ecossistêmicas.Ph
Overview of the old and new IHO Data Protection Schemes
IHO S-63“IHO Data Protection Scheme” is the standard for protecting S-57 ENCs from piracy and unauthorized use. It has been used worldwide. Part 15 of the IHO S-100“Universal Hydrographic Data Model” is the upgraded version of S-63 and will be used for S-100 products, not only for ENCs, in the near future. Working Group on Fisheries Benthic Impact and Trade-Offs (WGFBIT; outputs from 2021 meeting).
The Working Group on Fisheries Benthic Impact and Trade-offs (WGFBIT) develops methods and performs assessments to evaluate benthic impact from fisheries at regional scale, while con-sidering fisheries and seabed impact trade-offs. In this report, new fishery benthic impact assessments are carried out for several sub-regions in the Mediterranean (Greek waters, South Adriatic Sea, Sicily waters). For other regions, updates of the whole assessment or specific steps only were presented. A standard advice sheet for the regional benthic assessments, intended as input to the next generation of the ICES Ecosystem and Fisheries Overviews, was finalised and compiled for some regions as example (Greek wa-ters, Baltic Sea). A validation of the longevity relationships using new data was executed for the Kattegat area and the Southern North Sea. In relation to the methodology, some recommenda-tions were formulated concerning the update on depletion rates, the use of epifauna- or infauna-based data, guidance on which set of epibenthic species to include and the time scale for setting the average swept-area-ratio (SAR) used in model fitting and assessment. A benchmarking pro-cess comparing available benthic impact assessment approaches for MSFD descriptor 6 “Seafloor integrity” is needed, as the WGFBIT approach (relative benthic state) is not the only way to assess benthic impacts from physical disturbances. A start was made to explore how to incorporate more explicitly ecosystem functioning in to the WGFBIT seafloor assessment methodology. An improved understanding of the relationships between total community biomass and ecosystem functioning may assist in setting acceptable thresholds for ecosystem impacts from trawling. Furthermore, an improved understanding of the link between species functional effect traits and proxies and processes for specific ecosystem functions could help increase our ability to predict the impact of fishing disturbance on benthic ecosystem functioning more accurately. The ecosys-tem function we focus on is the biogeochemical cycling of organic matter. Two approaches were discussed (i) Biological traits approach focusing on the linkage between biological traits and eco-system functions and (ii) biogeochemical modelling approach using the established the OMEXDIA model.FBITPublishedNon Referee
Temporal and spatial variation of sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus abundance north of Pinar del Río, Cuba.
El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar las variaciones espacio-temporales de la abundancia del pepino de mar, Isostichopus badionotus, en Arroyos de Mantua, al norte de Pinar del Río, Cuba. Se analizaron las cuotas asignadas y las toneladas capturadas históricamente. Se realizaron muestreos independientes de la pesquería en cinco sitios de pesca de la región. Se determinaron, analizaron y compararon la densidad y potencial pesquero en cada sitio en los años 2017, 2018 y 2019. Tanto la densidad como el potencial pesquero tienden a disminuir en el tiempo. No existe sobrepesca por parte de la empresa que opera en la región, ya que los valores de cuotas no son alcanzados por las capturas de la flota estatal. La pesca ilegal puede ser la causa de la disminución de la abundancia, actuando fundamentalmente en los sitios más cercanos a puerto.The present study aims to determine the spatiotemporal variations of the abundance of sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus in Arroyo de Mantua in the north of Pinar del Río, Cuba. It was determined, analyzed, and compared density and fishing potential in the years 2017, 2018 and 2019 by historical assigned quota and catching, as well as individual sampling in five fishing sites. Results of this investigation demonstrate that density and fishing potential tend to decline over time. Moreover, the fishing company operating in the research area does not overfish as the quota values are not obtained in the catching. Illegal fishing could be the main cause for a decrease in abundance, which affects fundamentally the closest sites to port.PublishedReferee

Ce rapport de stage résume les principales techniques évoquées lors d’une formation à Alicante à bord du navire INTERMARES A-41 et reprend la majorité des cas d’études présentés lors des cours spécialisés et des séances pratiques par des experts reconnus en la matière. Le nom de chaque expert (voir annexe) sera donné devant chaque thème qu’il a dirigé. Le stage de formation sur l’observation scientifique à bord a été organisé afin de fournir une vision globale sur ce sujet pour les instituts de recherche, les administrations et le secteur de la pêche. L’objectif de ce rapport est de communiquer le maximum de savoir acquis, lors de la participation à cette formation, sur les techniques d’observations scientifiques de la pêche et ceci à ceux qui s’intéressent au domaine de la pêche et surtout ceux qui sont en relation directe avec la gestion durable de la pêche en Tunisie. Ce rapport constitue un bon guide pour la formation des professionnels de différentes disciplines souhaitant participer à des campagnes de suivi des pêches en tant qu’observateurs scientifiques. L’intérêt principal de ce rapport est donc l’aide des observateurs scientifiques de la pêche en Tunisie et aussi ceux qui souhaitent entamer cette expérience à réaliser tous les objectifs attendus par cette formation.PublishedNon Referee
Aquatic macrophytes in the Neotropical Region: species richness and qualification.
Aquatic macrophytes are macroscopic photosynthetic organisms that encompass several taxonomic groups of plants, with broad limnological characteristics that colonize from marshes to submerged areas, playing a fundamental role in structuring wetlands and affecting aquatic biodiversity. The Neotropical Region, covering from the south of Mexico to the south of Argentina, is characterized for being one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, with a unique biota, many endemic species and a great diversity of environments. As one of the wetlands with the greatest potential in this ecozone and the world, the Paraná-Paraguay basins stand out. The objectives of this thesis were to quantify and qualify the species of aquatic macrophytes that occur in the Neotropical Region and in the Paraná-Paraguay basins, carry out an analysis of hotspots for the Paraná-Paraguay basins and provide current information and indicators of areas of high richness of aquatic macrophytes. A conservation efficiency analysis is also available that correlates areas considered hotspots and the protected areas present in these basins. Data from systematic searches in important bibliographic bases were used to compose the lists and geographic coordinates. A total of 1616 spp. for the Neotropics and 979 species for the Paraná-Paraguay basins. The families with the highest number of species were Cyperaceae Juss. and Poaceae Barnhart in both regions studied. Species richness for the Paraná-Paraguay basins was recorded using occurrence points, with 5 locations with values from 71 to 139 species and 50 locations from 1 to 11 species, with the Lower Paraná River having the lowest number of occurrences and the Lower Paraguay River the largest amount. Sixteen sub-basins considered as hotspots were registered, and these areas coincided with the areas of greatest richness. Approximately 6% of the total ecological hotspot areas are being conserved within protected areas. In conclusion, the results obtained in both surveys reaffirm the high number of species present in these wetlands, highlighting the need for further systematic and taxonomic studies of aquatic macrophytes, seeking to precisely detail these megadiverse regions.Macrófitas aquáticas são organismos fotossintetizantes macroscópicos que englobam vários grupos taxonômicos de plantas, com amplas características limnológicas que colonizam desde brejos até áreas submersas,desempenhando papel fundamental na estruturação das áreas úmidas e afetando a biodiversidade aquática. A Região Neotropical, abrange desde o sul do México até o sul da Argentina, caracteriza-se por ser uma das regiões mais biodiversas do mundo, com biota singular, grande número de espécies endêmicas e grande diversidade de ambientes. Como uma das áreas úmidas de maior potencial desta ecozona e do globo, destacam-se as bacias Paraná-Paraguai. Os objetivos dessa tese foram quantificar e qualificar as espécies de macrófitas aquáticas ocorrentes na Região Neotropical e nas bacias Paraná-Paraguai,efetuar análise de hotspots para as bacias Paraná-Paraguai e disponibilizar informações atuais e indicadoras de áreas de alta riqueza de macrófitas aquáticas. Também é disponibilizado uma análise de eficiência de conservação que correlaciona áreas consideradas hotspots e as áreas protegidas presentes nessas bacias. Dados de buscas sistemáticas em importantes bases bibliográficas foram utilizados para compor as listas e coordenadas geográficas. Registrou-se um total de 1616 spp. para os Neotrópicos e 979 espécies para as bacias Paraná-Paraguai. As famílias com maior número de espécies foram Cyperaceae Juss. e Poaceae Barnhart em ambas as regiões estudadas. A riqueza de espécies para as bacias Paraná-Paraguai foi registrada por meio de pontos de ocorrência, apresentando 5 locais com valores de 71 a 139 espécies e 50 locais de 1 a 11 espécies, sendo o Baixo Rio Paraná com a menor quantidade de ocorrências e o Baixo Rio Paraguai a maior quantia. Foram registradas 16 sub-bacias consideradas hotspots, e estas áreas coincidiram com as áreas de maior riqueza. Aproximadamente 6% do total das áreas de hotspots ecológicos estão sendo conservados dentro de áreas protegidas. Em conclusão, os resultados obtidos em ambas as pesquisas reafirmam o alto número de espécies presentes nessas áreas úmidas, deixando evidente a necessidade de mais estudos sistemáticos e taxonômicos para macrófitas aquáticas, em busca de detalhar precisamente essas regiões megadiversas.Ph

The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) has released the latest edition of Yemaya, its newsletter on gender and fisheries. The articles in this issue are drawn from the presentations and discussions at the webinar organized by GAFS, Women Work in Fisheries, Too! held on 29 November 2021. The webinar identified areas that respond to the inaccurate and inadequate portrayal of women’s work in Asian countries. Yemaya No. 65, dated March 2022, features articles from Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Philippines and Uganda, on decent work, small-scale fisheries and gender issues in the seafood industry. Актуализация стандартов на пресервы рыбные специального посола
Present revision of the standards on fish preserves in special brine has been conducted as a part of operation of the Technical Committee for Standardization TC 300 “Fish products for human and animal consumption, and industrial purposes, as well as their package”. This article presents the analysis of the requirements currently set by acting standards on the preserves in special brine produced using the Pontic shad, Japanese pilchard, Pacific saury, horse mackerel, Atlantic mackerel, and other fish species; the conclusion on the feasibility of inclusion of the analyzed requirements to the newest standard on preserves currently in development is stated. Taking into consideration the classification commonly used in the fisheries, the preserves with fat content in fish exceeding 8 % are proposed to be considered as a fatty fish product; this information could be indicated in the label of preserves. It is shown to be impractical to standardize fish length in the final preserved product due to its discrepancy with the minimum landing size, which also takes into account that the catch of certain fish species is regulated by international agreements. As per requirements of TR EAEU 040/2016, presence of aging traits in preserves has not been adopted as a required property of this product, requirements for its buffer capacity have not been included in the developed draft standard, and the buffer value is not considered to be an intrinsic indicator for fish aging in preserves. The standards for the content of salt (sodium chloride) and preserving agents, as well as for the weight percentage of fish in the preserves in special brine have been elaborated and specified. Application of the developed standard will facilitate the adherence to the TR EAEU 040/2016 requirements.Работа по актуализации стандартов на пресервы рыбные специального посола выполнена в рамках деятельности технического комитета по стандартизации ТК 300 «Рыбные продукты пищевые, кормовые, технические и упаковка». В статье представлен анализ требований, которые установлены в настоящее время в действующих стандартах на пресервы специального посола из сельди, сардины иваси, сайры, ставриды, скумбрии и других видов рыб, а также приведено заключение о целесообразности включения анализируемых требований в новый разрабатываемый стандарт на пресервы. С учетом классификации, принятой в рыбной отрасли, пресервы с содержанием жира в рыбе более 8 % предложено отнести к продукции из жирных видов рыб; данная информация может быть представлена при маркировании пресервов. Показана нецелесообразность нормирования в готовых пресервах длины рыбы из-за ее несоответствия значениям промысловых размеров; при этом учтено, что вылов определенных видов рыб регулируется международными договорами. В соответствии с требованиями ТР ЕАЭС 040/2016 наличие признаков созревания в пресервах не является обязательной характеристикой данного вида продукции, требования к буферности не включены в разработанный проект стандарта и буферность не рассматривается как объективный показатель степени созревания рыбы в пресервах. Уточнены нормы содержания поваренной соли и консервантов, а также массовой доли рыбы в пресервах специального посола. Применение разработанного стандарта будет способствовать обеспечению соблюдения требований ТР ЕАЭС 040/2016.PublishedReferee
Principes directeurs pour le programme de certification Tsunami Ready
In December 2004, 227,899 people lost their lives and around US$10 billion were estimated as overall economic losses in the 14 countries affected by the 9.1-magnitude Indian Ocean earthquake. In response to the devastation caused by the earthquake and consecutive tsunami, the international community reinforced and expanded its initiatives to reduce the tsunami-related risk of coastal communities worldwide. In response, the Tsunami Unit of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO/IOC) was established. It aims to prevent the loss of lives and livelihoods that are caused by tsunamis, offering its support to IOC Member States in assessing tsunami risk, implementing Tsunami Early Warning Systems (EWS) and educating communities at risk about preparedness measures. Since 2015, the UNESCO/IOC has been promoting the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme as an international performance-based community recognition pilot consisting of key actions that help to reduce tsunami-related risks to individuals and communities. Through the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme, communities become aware of the risks they face from tsunamis and take steps to address them. To support current and future pilots, UNESCO/IOC commissioned the review and analysis of the Tsunami Ready Guidelines, which were initially established in the Caribbean, with the purpose of expanding the implementation of the programme globally. To this end, a desk-based review of all key documents and literature was conducted to assess the existing frameworks, documents and additional literature about the implementation of the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme in different regions Figure 1.
