Adaptation to Climate Changes and Ecological Transition in Urban Contexts
The paper addresses the ecologically oriented design of a small forestation inside an urban tissue in the view of the problems of urban heating. The feasibility studies on university campus in L'Aquila (Italy) are used for reflecting on a development from a small-scale planning action to a broader reconfiguration of multiple green areas inside a highly urbanized area. The paper highlights potentiality of analytical tools in urban planning in the view of even more consistent and sustainable strategical approaches that consider open spaces and green connections potentialities inside the planning processes
PROPAGATION OF UNCERTAINTY FROM FLOOD INUNDATION MODELING TO DAMAGE ESTIMATIONS: TRADE-OFFS IN USING CHANNEL BATHYMETRY DERIVED FROM TOPOGRAPHIC LIDAR
This study evaluates the impact of terrain model resolution on flood inundation and damage assessments for a test river reach in Northern Italy. High-resolution topographic LiDAR (TL) data were compared against a benchmark incorporating bathymetric surveys. Using 2D hydraulic simulations and flood damage models, the study analyzed residential and agricultural damage sensitivity to inundation depth variations. The results indicate that, although inundation depth differences with coarser DTMs remained within 1 m, they cause loss estimation discrepancies of up to ±20% for the residential sector and 8-10% for crops. Variations are especially significant near activation thresholds for the damage mechanisms assumed in the models, as observed in cereal crops and residential areas with shallow flooding. Findings highlight the importance of considering the propagation of uncertainties in flood hazard modeling, with implications for risk assessment accuracy and cost-effectiveness in data acquisition strategies
The impact of the Himalayan aerosol factory: results from high resolution numerical modelling of pure biogenic nucleation over the Himalayan valleys
Observational data collected in December 2014 at the base camp of Mount Everest, Nepal, indicated frequent new particle formation events of pure biogenic origin. Those events were speculated to be controlled by the along-valley winds forming in the valley connecting the Indo-Gangetic plain to the observational site, the Nepal Climate Observatory-Pyramid. The valley winds funnel highly oxygenated organic molecules of biogenic origin to higher elevations where they nucleate. The mechanism was referred to as “The Himalayan aerosol factory”. Its geographical extent and climate implications are currently unknown. In view of this, we conducted numerical chemical model simulations to corroborate the presence of the mechanism, and to quantify its geographical extent. Our numerical simulations confirmed that biogenic emissions located in the valleys can be converted into ultra-low volatility organic compounds, transported to the observational site by the along-valley winds, and therein nucleate. The overall time scale of the process, from the release of biogenic emissions to the conversion to ultra-low volatile organic compounds to the arrival time at the observational site, was found to be around 4 hours, consistent with the predicted along-valley winds intensity and the geographical distribution of biogenic emissions. A first estimation of the maximum injection height of biogenic particles, and highly oxygenated organic molecules, indicated the presence of efficient nucleating gases and biogenic particles at an elevation as high as 5000-6000 m a.s.l. These results suggest that the Himalayan chain, under specific weather conditions, is a main contributor to the biogenic aerosol loads in the free troposphere. Considering these findings, field campaigns, especially at the entrance of the valley’s floors, and research consortia supporting atmospheric research in Asian mountain regions, are highly encouraged
A Timoshenko-like equivalent beam model for the static analysis of a chiral metamaterial
In this paper, a one-dimensional Timoshenko-like equivalent beam model, embedded in a 2D space, is developed to analyze the static response of a chiral metamaterial, first presented in Misra et al. (Contin Mech Thermodyn 32:1497–1513, 2020). This is a beam-like structure, here referred to as the ‘grain beam’, which is made of a periodic assembly of a grain-pair interconnected with solid bars, exhibiting chirality through shear and axial strains coupling. The derivation of the beam model is conducted within the framework of the direct one-dimensional approach, wherein the constitutive law is established through a suitable homogenization procedure, that relies on an energy equivalence between a cell of the periodic model and a segment of the solid beam. Based on the geometry of the interconnecting elements of a grain-pair of the microstructure, analytical as well as numerical approaches are developed to identify the constitutive parameters, the latter grounded on a FE analysis of the cell. The analytical identification procedure, which shed the light on the dependence of the elastic coefficients upon proper defined nondimensional parameters, as the cell aspect ratio and the slenderness of horizontal and vertical fibers, is shown to be effective in designing grain beams with targeted stiffnesses, chirality and macroscopic behavior. The linear static response of some grain beams, taken as case studies, is analyzed and the results obtained by the Timoshenko-like beam model and the FE analyses, these latter carried out on refined models of grain beams, are compared. The effectiveness of the beam model, its limits of applicability, and the associated error magnitude in describing the static behavior of grain beams are investigated and discussed
La copertura perduta dell'Anfiteatro Corea nella Roma di fine Ottocento
Although dependent on other European countries for supply raw materials and technological-production knowledge, in the last decades of the nineteenth century the Italian steel industry began to assume an important role also in the construction sector, thanks to the growth of an entrepreneurial class capable of investing capital and promoting the training of workers for the production of metal carpentry. Ferrous alloys found privileged areas of experimentation both in the construction of bridges and collective structures and, although sporadically, in the reuse of ancient buildings, as in the case of the Mausoleum of Augustus on whose ruins the Corea amphitheater was built, covered in the last decades of the nineteenth century by a metal structure of considerable size. The roof, completed in 1881 based on a design by the Friulian architect Giovan Battista Comencini and demolished in the fascist era, entrusted iron and cast iron with the task of configuring the addition, of which it primarily experimented the technical code, also solving the conditions of interaction with the ancient remains. The occasion tells of a Rome eager to investigate the potential of ferrous alloys for new spatialities, even if the use of traditional decorative devices reflects an attitude that is not yet mature enough to accept iron architecture in its entirety.Benché dipendente dagli altri paesi europei per l’approvvigionamento di materie prime e per le conoscenze tecnologico-

Caries risk assessment in children: experimental study on the effectiveness of the C.A.M.B.R.A. system
Background The caries risk assessment (CRA) is the set of procedures that aim to determine a personalised treatment of the caries pathology in the patient. CRA establishes the probability to develop carious lesions over a certain time period or the likelihood that there will be a change in size or activity of lesions already present [Kriegler et al., 2021]. This "assessment" occurs in two phases: the first phase is to determine specific disease indicators, risk factors, and protective factors each patient has such as the presence of bacterial biofilm, the quantity and quality of saliva, the quality and quantity of the patient's diet, the presence or absence of a correct lifestyle from a hygienic point of view; the use of fluorine and calcium phosphate substances; In the second phase a risk level is assigned to the patient (low, moderate, high, or extreme) in order to allow an individualised treatment plan, which combines restorative treatments with a preventive chemical therapy [Featherstone and Chaffee, 2018; Khallaf et al., 2021]. The aim of this preliminary study is to analyse the correlation of caries with the risk factors related in young patients from 6 to 12 years old, associated to moderate and severe risk levels of caries. Methods This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study that included 64 children and adolescents aged from 6 to 12 years, considering the possible and possible samples not acceptable to the study, due to the exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria were as follows: all children visiting the pediatric dental clinic who co-operated during the oral examination who have from "moderate" to" high" risk of caries according with CAMBRA [Featherstone et al., 2007]. Results The sample consisted of 64 subjects, of which only one with a C.R.A. score less than 11 (score 1 for the compliance factor, workable soil index, and score 3 for the fluorine factor to indicate no fluoroprophylactic measure) and was considered "low risk".This patient was excluded from the subsequent analysis, which compared subjects with a C.R.A. score of 11-15 ("high risk", n = 29) with those with a score of 16-27 ("extreme risk", n = 34). Conclusions The results showed that patients at extreme risk of tooth decay compared to high-risk patients, not only had all the highest rating rates, but also had more difficulty changing their habits. We can therefore conclude that both the risk of caries is directly proportional to a worsening of the clinical conditions and the delay of the intervention by the clinician is itself a risk factor
