The integration of on-demand mobility solutions such as on-demand shuttles into existing mobility ecosystems can represent a sustainable alternative to motorized private transport, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. The aim of this work is to develop a framework that supports municipalities in the implementation of such services. Based on a document analysis and expert interviews with three existing on-demand services, the organizational and technical requirements for such systems are examined. The results show that on-demand systems are characterized by a close integration of technical systems (e.g. booking software, pooling systems) and cross-company organizational structures (e.g. mobility providers, vehicle and personnel management). The OnDeMA-framework (on-demand mobility analysis framework) developed comprises a general role model and a system model that serves as a basis for planning and implementing new on-demand services. This work thus contributes to the systematic analysis and design of public mobility services and provides starting points for further research and practical applications
Enhancing Caregiver Training in Fall Prevention Through Virtual Reality - A Practice-Oriented Retrospective View of the immtaCARE Project
This paper presents an experimental case study on the application of GPT‑4 in the domain of object-oriented software development. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of GPT‑4 in generating functional and high-quality code, exploring the role of prompt engineering in guiding the model to achieve specific software development objectives. In the experimental case studies, GPT‑4 was tasked with progressively complex programming challenges. The first case, a Java-based student management system, demonstrated GPT-4’s capacity to generate structured, functional code in response to specific prompts. However, it also revealed the need for precise, context-rich prompts to create maintainable and high-quality software solutions. The second case, the “Snake” game, presented a more complex scenario. GPT‑4 initially produced general approaches and pseudocode, requiring iterative prompting and error analysis to develop a functional game. This case highlighted the limitations of GPT‑4 in handling complex programming tasks without detailed guidance. The results of these studies suggest that GPT‑4 can be a valuable tool in software development when combined with thoughtful prompting strategies and a deep understanding of software development principles. However, the necessity of human expertise in critical decision-making and complex design tasks is underscored. The limitations of GPT‑4 in automated testing and its current inability to independently handle complex software projects are also discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion on the integration of generative AI in software engineering methodologies and the ethical implications of biases observed in GPT-4’s responses. This study contributes to understanding the potential and limitations of generative AI in software development and highlights the ongoing need for human oversight and expertise in the field
Towards Intelligent Performance Data Analytics With Graph Databases
Continuous observability of microservices requires monitoring traces and resource consumption, generating vast amounts of data that are difficult to interpret due to complex interdependencies. While tools like Prometheus, Jaeger, and Grafana support label- and time-based queries, they lack graph-based semantic querying, which is well-suited to model microservice architectures. This paper explores the potential of leveraging the graph database Neo4j for performance data, utilizing its expressive graph query language, Cypher. Using pattern matching, Cypher supports flexible querying of data in various semantic relationships. Our approach will enable users to analyze time series from various observability data sources, such as Prometheus and Jaeger, supporting flexible pattern queries, aggregations, statistical analysis, and temporal as well as structural queries within the microservices context
Student Perspectives on AI Adoption in Academia: Motivations, Purposes, and Challenges
With artificial intelligence tools becoming increasingly integrated into academic environments, it is crucial to understand students' perspectives on their adoption. This study investigates the motivations and purposes driving university students' adoption of AI-enabled tools in the academic context. Through semi-structured interviews with seven participants, this study shows a shift towards the adoption of AI technologies, mainly motivated by the efficiency, ease of use, creativity enhancement and customized assistance. However, this transition is not without its challenges, with concerns around accuracy, lack of up-to-date information, the need for transparent sources, and ethical considerations such as privacy and authorship.
The study highlights the potential of AI tools to transform academic research by providing an intuitive tool that could democratize access to information and improve the quality of education and research outcomes. The identified challenges emphasize the need for a critical approach when integrating AI tools into academic practices
Expectations and Needs of Female STEM Students for Academic Chatbots
Digital tools in higher education often promise support but rarely reflect the everyday realities of their users. This paper presents insights into what female STEM students expect from a supportive academic chatbot, aiming to better understand their needs and how such tools can be meaningfully integrated into their educational routines. As part of a broader context analysis, unstructured interviews were conducted with 30 female STEM students regarding their wishes and needs. Through thematic analysis, 71 wishes were extracted and organized into four broader themes, which we discuss and form into guidelines for designing academic chatbots. By conducting the first female-only study asking their specific question, we aim to include an underrepresented user group in the design of future academic chatbot applications
“The Data Billboard”: A Critical Design Inquiry into Data Awareness in Wearable Self-Tracking Devices
Wearable self-tracking devices have been embedded in our everyday lives as a tool for self-improvement and productivity. While these devices are designed to collect health data, the scope and implications of their data practices, such as data privacy, third-party sharing, and commercial use, have become growing concerns. Users, however, often remain unaware of the extent of their health data collection and interpretation. This study adopts a critical design methodology to inquire how users perceive and engage with these hidden data practices. Through a provocative prototype called "The Data Billboard", data exposure was exaggerated by making personal health metrics visible to the public. During the interaction with the prototype, the participants experienced the discomfort of publicly exposing health data and reflected on their awareness of data. The findings of the study support that the experience with the prototype challenged the initial assumptions and perceptions about data exposure by prompting social, emotional, and reflective responses. The study contributes empirical insights into data awareness and demonstrates how critical design can provoke ethical questions, as well as opens debates around self-tracking data practices
