    Groups and AI: How Access to Generative AI Influences Creative Teamwork

    As generative AI tools spread to creative domains like design thinking, studies indicate that, while this can be inspiring, users may also explore their own creativity less. To better understand this effect, we conducted an experiment observing collocated groups working on creative marketing tasks, with access to either generative AI or a traditional web search engine. Participants then rated their process and results. In a second study, externals rated the groups' results. We found that external ratings for AI-supported results were slightly better, while self-ratings were not. However, the process without AI was perceived as harder but also more creative, and we observed higher collaborative engagement. Access to the AI tool was perceived to make the task easier and quicker, but also less engaging and fun. Our findings imply that creatives should consider that adding generative AI to their team processes may impact not just workload, but also enjoyment

    Evoking Emotions in Virtual Reality: A Comparative Study of Simulation Methods

    Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) has proven effective for treating anxiety disorders, yet little is known about how different Virtual Reality (VR) simulation methods compare in their ability to evoke emotional responses. This study examined three methods – binaural-audio-based, 180° stereoscopic video-based, and computer-generated VR – to determine their effectiveness in eliciting fear and joy. Twelve participants experienced all methods, each presenting dogs exhibiting friendly, neutral, and aggressive behaviors. Emotional responses and sense of presence were measured after each behavior block and retrospectively. Results indicate that computer-generated and video-based VR elicit significantly higher levels of fear and joy compared to audio-only, with computer-generated VR producing higher fear responses in aggressive scenarios. Despite similar effectiveness, production requirements differed substantially: computer-generated VR required approximately six times longer than video-based VR. These findings suggest that while computer-generated VR may offer optimal emotional engagement for VRET, video-based approaches provide a resource-efficient alternative with comparable emotion elicitation

    Mapping Global Efforts in Cultural Heritage: Through Network Analysis of Digitalization Technologies

    The preservation and digitalization of cultural heritage have received significant attention worldwide due to their importance to future generations. Many digital technologies are available to preserve cultural heritage. This research deeply investigates the global efforts to protect cultural heritage. To this end, an approach inspired by network science is used to analyze countries’ efforts worldwide and their adopted technologies. The data of this work was manually collected from 42 resources. It consists of information about 21 contributor countries and the 20 most frequent technologies for digitalizing cultural heritage. Two network models were generated for the countries and technologies. The study showed noticeable facts about global efforts in cultural heritage preservation. For instance, the USA, Germany, and China are world-leading contributors that use AI and 3D scanning as the leading technologies in preserving cultural heritage. Also, they are considered pioneers in open-access platforms and digital twins, which is essential in making cultural heritage accessible to the public audience. The research also distinguished the impact of the technologies used for cultural heritage on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

    Digital Technologies and Their Role in Cultural Heritage Preservation: The Case of Jassan Hill

    Most of the heritage sites in Iraq are subjected to rapid degradation due to climate change, encroaching urbanization, and the lack of effective preservation policies. This paper will address Jassan Hill, a poorly documented heritage site, to exemplify how contemporary digital technologies have become applicable in the preservation of all forms of cultural heritage. It aims to conceptualize a strategic framework for documenting and analysing sites using modern digital technologies such as 3D scanning, (GIS). The integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Findings revealed that structural fragility and degradation resulted from natural forces in conjunction with human factors, aggravated by weak legislative enforcement and a lack of community engagement. The study offers an integrated strategy based on digital documentation, adaptive reuse, and public awareness, drawing on international digital preservation models. Furthermore, the research advocates the establishment of a specialized management authority for the site and a participatory model for its management that includes governmental authorities, academic, and local communities. The study contributes to the ongoing discussion about digital heritage preservation within complex contexts and provides an approach open for replication for other endangered sites

    "Im Zeitalter der digitalen Transformation spielen Daten eine wichtige Rolle für die Entscheidungsfindung in Unternehmen. In diesem Kontext müssen sich Unternehmen mit der Datenreife, also wie effektiv sie mit ihren Daten umgehen, auseinandersetzen. Sogenannte Datenreifegradmodelle ermöglichen es Unternehmen, den Reifegrad ihrer Datennutzung zu bewerten. Diese Forschungsarbeit widmet sich der Darstellung eines aktuellen Statuts von Datenreifegradmodellen (Data Maturity Models) und Identifizierung relevanter Trends auf Basis einer systematischen Literaturanalyse. Die Arbeit liefert dazu einen Überblick über existierende Reifegradmodelle. Es hat sich bei der Untersuchung herausgestellt, dass sehr große strukturelle Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den existierenden Modellen bestehen. Es hat sich aber gezeigt, dass innerhalb der analysierten Reifegradmodellen nur wenige praxistaugliche Maßnahmen erwähnt werden, wie Unternehmen von einer bestimmten Reifegradstufe auf eine höhere Datenreifegradstufe gelangen können. Somit sollten insbesondere strategische, organisatorische und technologische Schritte untersucht und definiert werden, die notwendig sind, um gezielt die Datenreife im Unternehmen zu erhöhen und somit den praktischen Nutzen existierender Datenreifegradmodell zu erhöhen.

    From Inter- to Transdisciplinarity via Research Labs: A Format for Joining Diverse Perspectives and Expertise in HCI-Research

    With HCI increasingly addressing complex societal challenges, transdisciplinarity emerges as a necessary extension of interdisciplinarity that involves the active integration of practitioners and stakeholders. In this paper, we propose Research Labs as a format to foster transdisciplinarity through discourse and reflection in HCI. They are organized as theme-driven, moderated sessions based on a consistent setup of modules, each following a distinct objective to provide both, continuity for enabling systematic reflection processes while also ensuring flexibility for participants to address individual topics, or needs. This concept was applied within eight sessions conducted over three years in the context of participatory design of socio-technical innovation for informal care. With familiarity and trust, dynamic adaptation mechanisms, and participatory elements, we identify preliminary learnings on how to strengthen transdisciplinarity within HCI processes. The paper outlines opportunities and limitations of the format and suggests directions for further development and application

    Write Again(st) the Machine. Reanimating a GDR-Era Typewriter as a Reflective Interface for Human-AI Dialogue

    We present a hacked 1980s East German typewriter repurposed as a screenless interface for large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT. Typed prompts are transmitted via a WiFi-enabled microcontroller; responses return slowly, audibly, and irreversibly-letter by letter, in ink on paper. There is no screen, no cursor, no delete key. This deliberately frictional interaction reimagines AI not as a seamless productivity tool, but as an embodied, material encounter. Demonstrated in public settings, the system transforms digital language into tangible trace-sparking reflection, curiosity, and intergenerational conversation. Its mechanical rhythm and nostalgic presence stand in stark contrast to contemporary AI norms. In the context of Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025 the project becomes both a technical prototype and a site of cultural inquiry. It links the city’s computing legacy with today’s algorithmic imagination: a conversation piece for the age of artificial intelligence
