Effect of different winemaking conditions on organic acids compounds of white wines

    Get PDF
Organic acids represent naturally occurring compounds that are found in many types of food and beverages, with important functions in defining products’ final quality. Their proportions in wine are dependent on grape composition and winemaking conditions (temperature, pH levels, oxygen, and carbon dioxide concentration). Therefore, this article studied the influence of different fermentation conditions (200 hL tanks vs. 50 L glass demijohns) and various yeasts on the evolution of the main organic acids during alcoholic fermentation of “Aligoté” wines. The fermentation lasted 22 days and samples were collected daily. Laboratory analyses were quantified according to the International Organization of Vine and Wine recommendations. High-performance liquid chromatography for the identification and quantification of organic acids was used. The data showed the important effect of winemaking conditions on sugar consumption, density or acidity values, and sensory characteristics. Significant differences in organic acid concentrations (especially for tartaric acid) were obtained for all variants, depending on the fermentation conditions, inoculated yeast and the sampling moment. The quantities of most of the identified organic acids were generally significantly increased when glass vessels were used, compared to those fermented in tanks. Most organic acids concentrations were favored by lower pH and showed higher values at lower temperatures

Environmental concern factors and consumers' purchase decision on the local agri-food market

    No full text
This study is addressing topics related to sustainable consumption and aims to identify and rank the decisional factors involved in the process of purchasing local eco-friendly agri-food products and to analyse to what extent the incidence of eco-friendly agri-food consumption is influenced by five factors: income, age, gender, education, living area. Thus, the paper presents the results of a market research regarding the consumer behaviour of agri-food and the willingness of adopting a more sustainable diet, in one of the developing regions of the European Union: the North-East Region of Romania, Ia.i County. Our substantive findings indicate that personal benefits (taste, perceived health benefits and freshness) are the main motivations driving sustainable consumption, while environmental conditions did not reach such a great significance. The results show that, in general, people are not well informed about the environmental implications of their diet. Their environmental attitudes are not aligned with their actual purchase practices: although the majority of people declare they are preoccupied with environmental protection, the driving motivations of agri-food purchase do not necessarily imply environmental concern factors, such as transportation, reusable/recyclable package or the wish to protect the environment. The study shows that women are more willing than men to change their consumption behaviour of agri-food products in order to contribute to a sustainable environment. Also, elderly people are more determined to purchase agrifood produced in an environmentally sustainable manner. Findings from this research lead to understanding the multiple factors that consumers consider in making purchase decisions of environmentally sustainable agri-food. Educational campaigns should be implemented in order to grow awareness about how our diet and food choices can address climate change

A review of representative methods used in wine authentication

    No full text
Authenticity and the methods for determining fraud are two of the most important issues in the field of quality control and food safety. In the winemaking field, the study of authenticity is all the more necessary, with wine being one of the most adulterated foods, as the monthly reports of the European Commission show. This results in a two-fold problem: consumer expectations are not met and there is a disloyal competition among wine producers in the field. Authenticity has been a priority research direction worldwide for centuries. Today, researchers are working on improving already existing methods of authenticity monitoring, but also on creating new ones. The intention is to have results that are as accurate, fast and inexpensive as possible for confirmation or rejection of the hypothesis. The bibliographic study of the literature undertaken for the development of this article aims to identify the classical methods of establishing authenticity, describe them and establish their degree of efficiency. Moreover, a review of the current research trends is presented in this work

The present paper highlights a study on the influence of storage time on the germination capacity of three cultivars of pea seeds. The determination of the germination capacity of pea seeds was carried out in accordance with the standards for Pisum sativum L. seeds, aged two and three years, respectively. The number of normally developed germs has been steadily declining for seeds since 2017 in all cultivars, but the highest loss of germination was analyzed at Meraviglia (38.3%) and Gloriosa (31.7%) cultivars. Research has shown that the seeds of all cultivars, after two years of storage, are in accordance with national and international standards, but the highest value of germination was at Kelvedon Wonder in 2018, respectively 100%

Use of fertigation systems for environmental safety of solanaceae species under protected spaces

The degradation of agricultural ecosystems began with the application of intensive agriculture, which cannot be separated from the problems related to it. In this context, it is more important than ever to dismiss any polluting technology, in order to defend the healthy agriculture concept and to model life based on the existing natural cycles. The aim of study was to achieve an equally balanced eco-system, based on self-regulation instead of major human intervention. To achieve this goal, at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Iasi it was organized an experiment in randomized blocks, with three repetitions on two species in tunnels, using different methods of irrigation and fertilization with average impact. The results obtained highlight that fertigation leads to sustainable yields because of the controllable application of water and nutrients, with direct long term positive implications in reducing soil compaction and salinization. The use of microorganisms-based fertilizers leads to significantly increased yields and, on the long term, enrich soil composition

Nanomaterials and essential oils as candidates for developing novel treatment options for bovine mastitis

    No full text
Nanomaterials have been used for diagnosis and therapy in the human medical field, while their application in veterinary medicine and animal production is still relatively new. Nanotechnology, however, is a rapidly growing field, offering the possibility of manufacturing new materials at the nanoscale level, with the formidable potential to revolutionize the agri-food sector by offering novel treatment options for prevalent and expensive illnesses such as bovine mastitis. Since current treatments are becoming progressively more ineffective in resistant bacteria, the development of innovative products based on both nanotechnology and phytotherapy may directly address a major global problem, antimicrobial resistance, while providing a sustainable animal health solution that supports the production of safe and high-quality food products. This review summarizes the challenges encountered presently in the treatment of bovine mastitis, emphasizing the possibility of using new-generation nanomaterials (e.g., biological synthesized nanoparticles and graphene) and essential oils, as candidates for developing novel treatment options for bovine mastitis

Broad bean crop presents great nutritional, agrotechnical, economic and social value worldwide, along with other legume crops such as soybean, bean and pea. In Romania, the interest for this crop is very low, although there are favorable conditions to acquire successful crops, in the last 30-50 there being a well-known crop. The study presents the most important achievements regarding the cultivation technology, with special emphasis on the assortment, crop density and fertilization regime, as important factors for the promotion of this culture in our country. The scientific paper is elaborated on the bases of the scientific literature regarding the most important cultivation factors and the correlation between them to meet the ecological needs of the plant

Aspects regarding the relation between economic freedom, democracy and development

Liberalism is an ideology centered around the entire social life of the individual as opposed to democracy, which comprises only the social aspects related to the functioning of the political system. Democracy has liberalism as its basis, being thus an expression of the spiritual and civic engaging of a set of values which are attributed to the individual in order to have the power to act rationally and freely. A democratic political system allows for the active but voluntary participation of citizens creating at the same time favorable conditions for the economic growth and development. Thus, the individuals may enjoy the economic freedom of operating within a market economy. Most studies regarding the impact of economic development on political changes suggest a strong relationship between the increasing levels of economic development and the opening of the political success, as well as between the changing social structures and the emergence of political competition. Lipset’s theory remarkably states that all developed states are democratic states with the exception of Singapore and that democracy is never influenced in a relatively rich country. Economic freedom is a complex concept able to manifest itself in various aspects relating to the individual’s economic behaviour and designating his fundamental right to have access and to act economically by performing economic activities. The research is based on secondary data (indicators reflecting the level of economic freedom, of democracy and of development) existing in the international databases (Political Stability, Index of Economic Freedom, Governance Indicators, World Development Indicators etc.). The main direction of the qualitative analysis of the paper is based on the concept of economic freedom, an overview of its history and chronological presence in the economic theory and practice, as well as on the ways of quantifying it using various indices that measure the economic freedom of the countries in Europe. The empirical part of the research comprises the analysis of the relationship between economic freedom and economic growth with the help of Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedom. The methodology for creating the index focused mainly on theoretical input as well as on a theoretical extension of the interpretation of each segment
