Evaluation of quality parameters in cotton production (Gossypium hirsutum L.) under water stress conditions
Decreasing water availability for cotton production has compelled researchers to engage in studies about rising water use efficiency by improving water management. The impacts of different irrigation levels on the fibre qualities of drip-irrigated cotton were evaluated in Diyarbakır, Southeast Anatolia Region of Turkiye. Three cotton varieties, ‘Stoneville 468’ (ST 468), ‘FiberMax 832’ (FM 832), and ‘Kartanesi’, and three levels of irrigation were tested in 2017 and 2018. Treatments were I 50 (50% water stress), I 75 (25% water stress), and the fully irrigated treatment I 100, which was obtained from Class-A pan evaporation. According to the two-year results of the study, water stress caused a decline in fineness, length, strength, elongation, uniformity ratio, and spinning consistency index (SCI) values of fibre, while fibre yellowness and short fibre ratio values increased. Fibre brightness was not affected by water stress. There were significant differences among varieties concerning quality parameters. FM 832 has come to the fore with regard to fibre fineness, length, strength, uniformity, yellowness, reflectance, and spinning consistency index
Phytosterol and polyphenol contents and quinoa leave yields variation in relationships to variety, density and harvesting date
Quinoa is an Andean grain known for its gluten-free grains, which are used as a functional
food. The aim of this research was to study the possibility of introducing quinoa as a vegetable crop
grown for young leaves as a source of polyphenols and phytosterols. To achieve this goal, a field
experiment was performed with three quinoa cultivars (Titicaca, Puno, and Vikinga) grown in a
split plot design. The experimental factors included three densities (160, 320, and 760 plants m2)
and two harvest dates (52 and 62 days after sowing (DAS)). The content of phytosterols (ergosterol,
stigmasterol, -sitosterol and campesterol) and polyphenols (ferulic acid, isoquercitrin and
rutozid) in quinoa leaves were determined by HPLC method. The phytosterol content varied within
the limits: ergosterol 0–7.62 g 100 g1 dw, stigmasterol 79.9–175.3 g 100 g1 dw, -sitosterol
425.7–623.1 g 100 g1 dw and campesterol 0–5.25 g 100 g1 dw. Ferulic acid varied greatly from
38.0 to 63.3 g g1 dw, isoquercitrin ranged from 63 to 101.6 g g1 dw and rutozid varied widely
from 32.9 to 162.8 g g1 dw. The total phytosterols and the total phenolic compounds decreased
with decreasing plant number density and DAS. This research demonstrated that young quinoa
leaves are a good source of phytosterols and phenolics for human consumption
Evoluţia condiţiilor climatice din perioada 1989 – 2021, în arealele viticole reprezentative ale României
In order to study the impact of global climate changes on the viticultural ecosystem of the vineyards: Iaşi, Dealu Mare, Târnave, Dealu Bujorului, Murfatlar and Odobeşti a database spanning 33 years (1989 – 2021) was created. This database will be used to optimize the zonation of vine varieties for the expansion of the viticultural areas and the replanting of existing ones. In order to establish the ecoclimatic potential for the viticultural areas, climatic factors for vine culture were analyzed and categorized within favorability classes. Thus, all vineyards were classified in favorability class I for the thermal factor (average annual temperature, average temperature in July, useful heat balance), which indicates an abundance of these resources, with the possibility of obtaining quality white and red wines
Seronegative Myasthenia Gravis with Concomitant SARS-CoV-2 Infection in a Dog
Myasthenia gravis is a disorder of neuromuscular transmission affecting neuromuscular junction. Both congenital and acquired forms are described in dogs. Usually, the acquired form might be induced by an autoimmune attack against specific acetylcholine receptors. Viral infection is incriminated to be a trigger for myasthenia gravis occurrence and, in a limited number of papers, infection with SARS-CoV-2 was found to be associated with myasthenia gravis expression in humans. In this case report, we describe a 2-year old crossbred, female dog case of seronegative generalized myasthenia gravis and concomitant SARS-CoV 2 infection due to close exposure to an infected owner. Despite the viral particles were not identified in our dog, the presence of anti SARS-CoV 2 antibodies and the epidemiological context were highly suggestive for a new recent infection with SARS-CoV 2. Our data complete the limited number of reports which document the SARS-CoV 2 passage from owners to pets and underline the role of serological screening for specific anti-SARS-CoV 2 antibodies as an indirect marker of infection especially when the viral detection fail to PCR test
Detection of the co-infections with Borrelia, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species in dogs with babesiosis in North-Eastern Romania
Vector-borne diseases are an important threat to
animals and human health, due to their zoonotic potential, increasing the global prevalence. In this study, we
collected blood samples from dogs confirmed with canine babesiosis, and the ticks attached were removed
and stored until morphological identification and DNA
extraction. The aim of this study was the screening for
the possible co-infections with bacterial tick-borne pathogens, using PCR protocols to detect: Borrelia spp.,
Anaplasma spp., and Ehrlichia spp. in blood and tick
samples. Of the 66 dogs, 15 (22.7%) were positive for
Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., 0 for Anaplasma spp./Ehrlichia
spp. and 2 (3.03%) for Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii. 2 dogs (3.03%) were co-infected with Borrelia
burgdorferi s.l. and Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii. Morphologically we identified a total of 99 ticks as
Ixodes ricinus (48.5%) and Dermacentor reticulatus
(51.5%), which were distributed in pools according to
the following criteria: canine patient, species, and developmental stage (gender). The most common pathogen species detected in ticks was Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii (25.8%) without clinical significance,
followed by Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (12.9%) and co-infection Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. + Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii (6.5%). The results of this study show
the importance of identifying co-infections in tick-infested dogs and the need for prevention protocols of ticks
infestations in dogs
The global assessment of the state of food security and progress towards achieving the hunger and food insecurity targets
This scientific approach presents an updated global assessment of food insecurity and nutrition for up to the year 2021
and a scientific approach on progress towards meeting SDG Targets 1 and 2 ending hunger and ensuring access to safe,
nutritious and sufficient food for all people all year round and eradicating all forms of malnutrition. Despite hopes that
the world would emerge more quickly from the crisis and food security would begin to recover from the pandemic in
2021, the pandemic held its grip and even tightened it in some parts of the world. The rebound of gross domestic
product (GDP) growth observed in most countries in 2021 did not translate into gains in food security in the same year.
Enormous challenges are still faced by those who continue to be the most affected: those with less wealth, lower and
more unstable incomes and poorer access to critical basic services. Another crisis is unfolding as this scientific
approach is being written with potentially sobering implications for global food security and nutrition: the war in
Ukraine. Although the statistics presented in this scientific approach represent the state of food security and nutrition up
until 2021, the direct and indirect effects of the conflict in 2022 will have multiple implications for global agricultural
markets through the channels of trade, production and prices. Ultimately, this casts a shadow over the state of food
security and nutrition for many countries, in particular those that are already facing hunger and food crisis situations,
and poses an additional challenge for achieving the SDG 2 targets of ending hunger and ensuring access to adequate
food for all (SDG Target 1) and of eliminating all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2)
Long-Term Examination of Degradation and In Vivo Biocompatibility of Some Mg-0.5Ca-xY Alloys in Sprague Dawley Rats
The medical field has undergone constant development in recent years, and a segment of this development is occupied by biodegradable alloys. The most common alloys in this field are those based on Mg, their main advantage being the ability to degrade gradually, without affecting the patient, and also their ability to be fully absorbed by the human body. One of their most important conditions is the regeneration and replacement of human tissue. Tissue can be engineered in different ways, one being tissue regeneration in vivo, which can serve as a template. In vivo remodeling aims to restore tissue or organs. The key processes of tissue formation and maturation are: proliferation (sorting and differentiation of cells), proliferation and organization of the extracellular matrix, biodegradation of the scaffold-remodeling, and potential tissue growth. In the present paper, the design of the alloys in the Mg-Ca-Y system is formed from the beginning using high-purity components, Mg-98.5%, master-alloys: Mg-Y (70 wt.%–30 wt.%) and Mg-Ca (85 wt.%–15 wt.%). After 8 weeks of implantation, the degradation of the implanted material is observed, and only small remaining fragments are found. At the site of implantation, no inflammatory reaction is observed, but it is observed that the process of integration and reabsorption, over time, accentuates the prosaic surface of the material. The aim of the work is to test the biocompatibility of magnesium-based alloys on laboratory rats in order to use these alloys in medical applications. The innovative parts of these analyses are the chemical composition of the alloys used and the tests performed on laboratory animals
Researchers on the operating behavior of direct seed drills and their influence on work quality indices
The technology of direct sowing in stubble involves the direct introduction of seeds into the soil without prior
preparation of the germinal bed.The sowing machines are built in such a way that they allow the opening of small holes
in the sowing direction in which the seeds are inserted. That's why, for the success of various conservative practices, but
especially of direct sowing, the farmer must take into account the method of managing the stubble on the surface, the
plant residues of the preceding crop, through a good work of shredding and uniform spreading on the surface during
summer - early autumn. The elimination of plant residues by burning is excluded, according to the Code of Good Farm
Practices, made by the Research Institute for Pedology and Agrochemistry in Bucharest
Contributions to the mathematical modeling of the threshing and separation process in an axial flow combine
The paper presents a mathematical model that characterizes the process of threshing
and separation from the threshing machine with an axial flow of a thresher, taking into account
the following input parameters: material flow, rotor speed, distance between rotor and counter
rotor, mean density of processed material, feed speed, length of thresher and separating surface.
Output parameters, such as the distribution function of separated seeds, distribution density function
of separated seeds and distribution function of free seeds in the threshing space, as well as the
distribution function of unthreshed seeds, together with the value of evacuation losses, were used to
control the modeling process
The impact of the storage conditions and type of clearomizers on the increase of heavy metal levels in electronic cigarette liquids retailed in Romania
The growing popularity of electronic cigarettes has raised several public health concerns,
including the risks associated with heavy metals exposure via e-liquids and vapors. The purpose of
this study was to determine, using atomic absorption spectrometry, the concentrations of Pb, Ni, Zn,
and Co in some commercially available e-liquid samples from Romania immediately after purchase
and after storage in clearomizers. Lead and zinc were found in all investigated samples before
storage. The initial concentrations of Pb ranged from 0.13 to 0.26 mg L1, while Zn concentrations
were between 0.04 and 0.07 mg L1. Traces of nickel appeared in all investigated e-liquids before
storage but in very small amounts (0.01–0.02 mg L1). Co was below the detection limits. We
investigated the influence of the storage period (1, 3, and 5 days), storage temperature (22 C and
40 C), and type of clearomizer. In most cases, the temperature rise and storage period increase
were associated with higher concentrations of heavy metals. This confirms that storage conditions
can affect metal transfer and suggests that the temperature of storage is another parameter that can
influence this phenomenon
