Mechanical Characterization and In Vitro Assay of Biocompatible Titanium Alloys

    No full text
Metals that come into contact with the body can cause reactions in the body, so biomaterials must be tested to avoid side effects. Mo, Zr, and Ta are non-toxic elements; alloyed with titanium, they have very good biocompatibility properties and mechanical properties. The paper aims to study an original Ti20Mo7ZrxTa system (5, 10, 15 wt %) from a mechanical and in vitro biocompatibility point of view. Alloys were examined by optical microstructure, tensile strength, fractographic analysis, and in vitro assay. The obtained results indicate very good mechanical and biological properties, recommending them for future orthopedic medical applications

Research regarding the influence of the flour sort on the textural, physico-chemical and sensory parameters of sourdough bakery products

    No full text
The structural, physico-chemical properties and sensory characteristics of sourdough bakery products represent important quality indicators that may be modified adue to changes in the process and parameters for products obtaining. The main role of sourdough used in the process of bakery products obtaining, consists on the fermentation process achievement, through the metabolism of sugars by the enzymatic action of sourdough and the release of CO2, alcohols and other secondary products. Natural sourdough differs mainly from compressed yeast in that the fermentation process in natural sourdough involves a slow process, called lactic fermentation, described as an anaerobic process in which organic substances are transformed into lactic acid by the action of microorganisms, whereas compressed yeast enriched with yeasts of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genus, involves a rapid process of alcoholic fermentation. The main purpose of the present research was to identify the influence of the flour sort on the quality of natural sourdough and on the textural, physico -chemical and sensory properties of the sourdough bakery products. Thus, two type of natural sourdough were obtained, respectively m1 – with superior flour (000 type) and m2 – with white flour (650 type) + wholemeal-flour (1350 type). The two types of sourdough were integrated into the recipes for the five experimental variants of bakery products, as follows: m1650; m1650,000; m1000, m1650,1350; m1000,1350; m2650; m2650,000; m2000, m2650,1350 and m2000,1350. The results of the research in terms of sensory evaluation are revealed that the variant m1650,000 was the most appreciated for most characteristics

The biodiversity of the mountain meadows together with the climatic factors of the Dorna region ensure high-quality milk favorable for obtaining traditional dairy products that are in great demand. The present research aimed to analyze the correlative evolution of some climatic factors and hygienic-sanitary parameters of several milk samples obtained from cows raised in the Dorna area. This study was carried out between December 2019 and November 2020 and aimed to evaluate the influence of seasonal fluctuations of climatic factors on the sanitary parameters of raw milk from households and commercial dairy farms in the Dorna region (southwest Bucovina-Suceava county). In this regard, we collaborated with two weather stations, which provided us with information on the fluctuations of temperature, humidity, precipitation, and atmospheric pressure by season. These aspects were correlated with the evolution of TBC (total bacteria count) and SCC (somatic cell count) values obtained when investigating some raw milk samples (n=30), and the obtained data were statistically analyzed. The results revealed more or less relevant seasonal influences of the investigated climatic factors on the hygienic-sanitary quality of the analyzed raw milk. Of these, we mention the recording of higher values in winter and lower in summer for TBC, and higher in autumn and lower in spring and summer for SCC respectively, but within the EU standards

The research aimed the study of two controversial species in Romania, Corythucha ciliata Say (sycamore tiger or sycamore lace bug) and Corythucha arcuata Say (oak tiger or oak lace bug) (Hemiptera, Tigidae). Knowing and differentiating the two species is important in order to observe their behavior, the way of damage, but also to be able to find methods to reduce the frequency of attack on plane trees and oak trees. Both insects are aggressive pests, damaging the leaves of trees and leading to their premature defoliation. The research aimed to identify, monitor and differentiate the two species from a morphological and biological point of view. The two species were observed and monitored over two years, 2020-2022, being identified in several locations in Transylvania, on plane (Platanus spp.) and oak (Quercus robur Linné). Regarding the biological cycle, in the temperate-continental climate of Cluj-Napoca, Corythucha ciliata Say develops two generations per year, while Corythucha arcuata Say develops three generations per year. The main criterion for differentiating the two species is the color of the ribs and the specific pattern on their wings

From farm to consumer: enhancing the value of agri-food products from mountain country farms through local gastronomic points

The European strategy "From Farm to Consumer", one of the key initiatives of the "Green Pact for Europe" is a new approach to the way consumers increasingly appreciate local food and direct sales. The Local Gastronomic Point (LGP) is a new approach that is developing in Romania, which meets these requirements, contributing to the creation and maintenance of jobs, to the sustainable development of rural communities and farms, being also the shortest sales chain, between producer and consumer. The Local Gastronomic Point is a concept that responds to the growing requirements in Romania, regarding the establishment of family catering units (farms), located in rural areas, that offer products and "cooking" specific to different geographical areas of Romania, following the rules and conditions of hygiene and food safety. Due to the LGP, farmers can enhance the value of their agri-food products, developing the complementary economic activity of serving local food/products, even "mountain products" and tourists/consumers can consume natural, traditional, specific and quality products from a particular region. This family-type activity is transferable to other mountain areas, to other rural localities, which may or may not have tourist potential. It can contribute to the development of rural tourism or to the creation of routes dedicated to gastronomic tourism

Drug-Loaded Polymeric Micelles Based on Smart Biocompatible Graft Copolymers with Potential Applications for the Treatment of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. Despite the fact that many treatments are currently available for eye diseases, the key issue that arises is the administration of drugs for long periods of time and the increased risk of inflammation, but also the high cost of eye surgery. Consequently, numerous daily administrations are required, which reduce patient compliance, and even in these conditions, the treatment of eye disease is too ineffective. Micellar polymers are core–shell nanoparticles formed by the self-assembly of block or graft copolymers in selective solvents. In the present study, polymeric micelles (PMs) were obtained by dialysis from smart biocompatible poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone) [PCL-g-P(NVCL-co-NVP)] graft copolymers. Two copolymers with different molar masses were studied, and a good correlation was noted between the micellar sizes and the total degree of polymerisation (DPn) of the copolymers. The micelles formed by Cop A [PCL120-g-P(NVCL507-co-NVP128)], with the lowest total DPn, have a Z-average value of 39 nm, whereas the micellar sizes for Cop B [PCL120-g-P(NVCL1253-co-NVP139)] are around 47 nm. These PMs were further used for the encapsulation of two drugs with applications for the treatment of eye diseases. After the encapsulation of Dorzolamide, a slight increase in micellar sizes was noted, whereas the encapsulation of Indomethacin led to a decrease in these sizes. Using dynamic light scattering, it was proved that both free and drug-loaded PMs are stable for 30 days of storage at 4 °C. Moreover, in vitro biological tests demonstrated that the obtained PMs are both haemo- and cytocompatible and thus can be used for further in vivo tests. The designed micellar system proved its ability to release the encapsulated drugs in vitro, and the results obtained were validated by in vivo tests carried out on experimental animals, which proved its high effectiveness in reducing intraocular pressure

Post slaughter stress levels in Duroc-Landrace crossbred compared to Landrace and Duroc purebred

The study was performed on 110 female pigs divided in 3 groups: 40 pigs from Duroc-Landrace crossbred, 35 pigs each for Duroc and Landrace purebred groups, respectively. All pigs were housed in similar conditions and fed using the same diet. Serum cortisol levels have been determined one month before slaughtering and immediately after slaughtering. The research showed higher values for serum cortisol in Duroc-Landrace crossbred before slaughtering, in comparison with the other 2 groups while post slaughtering the values were between Duroc and Landrace purebred, very close to those recorded for Duroc purebred, which were associated with the lowest stress impact on individuals. The study gives an insight on how crossbred and purebred individuals react facing stress factors, with a greater impact during life for crossbred pigs. Even if crossbreds are usually associated with an increased ability to adapt, it seems that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is actually activated more compared to purebreds, at least during life. However, given the lower cortisol levels post slaughtering, the quality of the meat is improved which is one of the most desirable traits in crossbreds

Mediastinal cysts are previously described as incidental findings in cats. A nine years old, 2.8 kg, Persian cat was presented to out Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) for mild dyspnea. Chest radiographies, revealed an incapsulated soft tissue opacity in the cranial mediastinum. Thoracic lung ultrasonography (LUS), evinced the presence of a cyst-like structure. Furthermore, the cat was subjected to complete cardiological examination and complete blood analysis. Echoguided drainage followed by cytological examination was carried out in order to reach a definitive diagnostic and to improve the general status of the patient. No other medical treatment has been pursued. Monthly evaluations have been performed during a period of five months, and the drainage was repeated one more time until the complete resolution of the pathology. No signs of relapse have been noticed over a period of two years. Only four cats diagnosed with idiopathic mediastinal cyst have been mentioned in the literature. To the author’s best knowledge, this is the first case report which describes the dynamic evolution of an idiopathic mediastinum cyst in Persian cat presented for mild dyspnoea

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the influence of some allelopathic species in weed control. Field experiments were conducted to assess the allelopathic potential of five species. Two experimental variants have been studied. The first variant was represented by the mix of species with allelopathic properties sown in the intercropping system with “Auria Bacăului” climbing bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The species with allelopathic properties used were white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense), birdsfoot trefoi (Lotus corniculatus) and parsley (Petroselinum crispum). The second variant was represented by the intercropping of barley (Hordeum vulgare) and climbing bean. Before mowing/ hoeing the degree of weed infestation was on average 59% for mixture variant, 23% for barley variant and 94% for control. After mowing/hoeing the results highlighted 21% weeds in mixture variant, 52% in barley variant and 82% for control

Silver Nanoparticles Biocomposite Films with Antimicrobial Activity: In Vitro and In Vivo Tests

    No full text
Overuse of antimicrobials by the population has contributed to genetic modifications in bacteria and development of antimicrobial resistance, which is very difficult to combat nowadays. To solve this problem, it is necessary to develop new systems for the administration of antimicrobial active principles. Biocomposite systems containing silver nanoparticles can be a good medical alternative. In this context, the main objective of this study was to obtain a complex system in the form of a biocomposite film with antimicrobial properties based on chitosan, poly (vinyl alcohol) and silver nanoparticles. This new system was characterized from a structural and morphological point of view. The swelling degree, the mechanical properties and the efficiency of loading and release of an anti-inflammatory drug were also evaluated. The obtained biocomposite films are biocompatibles, this having been demonstrated by in vitro tests on HDFa cell lines, and have antimicrobial activity against S. aureus. The in vivo tests, carried out on rabbit subjects, highlighted the fact that signs of reduced fibrosis were specific to the C2P4.10.Ag1-IBF film sample, demonstrated by: intense expression of TNFAIP8 factors; as an anti-apoptotic marker, MHCII that favors immune cooperation among local cells; αSMA, which marks the presence of myofibroblasts involved in approaching the interepithelial spaces for epithelialization; and reduced expression of the Cox2 indicator of inflammation, Col I
