Vagally Associated Second Degree Atrio-Ventricular Block in a Dog with Severe Azotemia and Evidence of Sympathetic Overdrive
A 14 years old, 6 kg, mix-breed male dog with severe azotemia due to urinary bladder herniation was presented to our Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). Electrocardiography revealed normal heart rate of 100 bpm, evidence of sinus respiratory arrhythmia (SRA) and frequent second degree atrio-ventricular block following peak inspiratory phase suggestive of vagally-induced atrio-ventricular conduction delay. Echocardiographic examination showed mild mitral regurgitation without any other cardiac changes, and systolic (SAP) and diastolic (DAP) blood pressure values were 185/90 mmHg (SAP/DAP). Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) was increased to 7.3 ng/mL, suggesting a myocardial injury. A Holter examination revealed evidence of overall decrease in heart rate variability with evidence of sympathetic overdrive on time and frequency domain as well as when the non-linear Poincaré plot was analyzed. Based on the author’s knowledge, this is the first report of a second degree atrio-ventricular block associated with vagal activity in a dog, with evidence of sympathetic overdrive and severe azotemia
Epidemiological study of gastrointestinal parasitism in horses from Mehedinti County
The presence of digestive parasites can alter behaviour, fertility, body condition, juvenile development, decreased
resistance to other pathogens, or the performance for which animals are bred. The aim of this study was to monitor
gastrointestinal parasite infestation in equines in Mehedinți County. The horses, sport and working, various breeds and
half-breeds, came from different localities from Mehedinți County. Samples were collected in plastic bags and
examined by flotation, sedimentation, and Baermann methods. Horses were divided into several categories: sex, age,
breed, and service. Strongylidae and Parascaris spp. represented parasitism in recreational and working horses studied
in Mehedinți county, no other parasitic elements were identified. The overall prevalence was 43.5% for Strongylidae
and 21.17% for Parascaris spp. The simultaneous presence of at least two parasite species was observed in 17.64% of
the horses examined
Soil conservation measures on degraded land in the hilly region of Eastern Romania: a case study from Puriceni-Bahnari Catchment
Land degradation through erosion processes is probably the most restrictive issue regarding
the sustainable agricultural use of land resources in contemporary Romania. The socio-economic
changes that occurred in Romanian society after 1990 resulted in a sharp decline in the implementation
of conservation practices along with an increase in intensity of land degradation. Consequently,
the present paper firstly aims to analyse the actual spread and intensity of land degradation in the
Puriceni-Bahnari catchment, representative area in terms soil erosion within Moldavian Plateau of
Eastern Romania. Secondly, the achievement of a dedicated project at the level of the entire basin
regarding the implementation of land conservation practices is the most suitable solution for the
sustainable agricultural use of this fragile natural resource. The results prove the severe degradation
state of the agricultural land, with a mean value of annual soil loss of 15.46 t ha1 yr1 (13,500 t yr1).
Furthermore, 460 ha of agricultural lands (72.7% of total) falls within the category that exceeds the
limit of admissible erosion of 7 t ha1 yr1. As a solution to the existing land use pattern, we
designed a map of proposed conservation measures and works on agricultural land for the whole
catchment that can be relatively easily implemented and conserve soil and water. The main issues
of the proposed land use pattern are: (1) the entire cropland must be reduced and changed to a
strip-cropping system; (2) the quality of the pastures should be improved; (3) the forested area must
be substantially extended, especially on account of unproductive land, and (4) the agricultural road
network must be halved and entirely reshaped. In conclusion, the large-scale implementation of
conservation practices on degraded agricultural land is the only rational solution for sustainable
development of poor local communities in the hilly areas from eastern Romania
Characterization of the national local maize landraces
Maize is one of the most important crops in Romania. In the mountainous and sub-mountainous areas there has been a
great variety of local landraces, which have been replaced over time by maize hybrids. The local maize landraces
preserved in the Suceava Genebank are the result of collecting from all country areas, both through the care of RICTP
Fundulea and the Agricultural Research Stations: Suceava, Turda, Șimnic, Lovrin, Albota, Podu Iloaiei and Geoagiu
(1957-1975), as well as of the collecting laboratory within Suceava Genebank (1990-2021). The paper presents the
results of the characterization of 1358 local maize landraces obtained within 30 years. Morpho-physiological
observations, biochemical and genetic analyzes were performed, both at Suceava Genebank and at the other research
institutions. The characterization of local landraces has led to the identification of gene sources useful for maize
breeding of the important characteristics (yield capacity, precocity and quality, resistance to low temperatures and to
Fusarium infection). A significant number of populations have shown good agronomic stability, and can be considered
potential sources of genes for improving the tolerance of maize to biotic and abiotic stress factors and the quality of new
created hybrids, which in addition to high yield capacity to have a high protein content, to be resistant to low
temperatures and to Fusarium infection
Chemometric optimization of biologically active compounds extraction from grape marc: composition and antimicrobial activity
The article focuses on the optimization of the extraction process of biologically active compounds
(BAC) from grape marc—a by-product of the wine industry. The influence of temperature,
specifically 30 °C, 45 °C and 65 °C, and ethanol concentration in solutions, specifically 0–96% (v/v)
on the extraction yield of polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanins, were investigated.
The composition of individual polyphenols, anthocyanins and organic acids, antioxidant activity
(DPPH and ABTS) and CIELab chromatic characteristics of the grape marc extracts (GME), were
characterized. The microbiostatic and microbicidal effects in direct contact of GME with pathogenic
microorganisms, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, were
determined in vitro. The influence of extraction parameters on the total polyphenol content (TPC),
total flavonoid content (TFC), tannin content (TC), total anthocyanin content (TAC) and their interdependencies
were studied using information analysis. A mathematical model was developed on cubic
spline functions. The analysis of individual compounds showed the presence of a wide range of
flavonoids (procyanidin B2, procyanidin B1, hyperoside and quercetin), flavones (catechin), hydroxybenzoic
acid derivatives (gallic, protocatechuic, p-hydroxybenzoic acids, m-hydroxybenzoic acid,
syringic acid), hydroxycinic acid derivatives and ferulic acid methyl ester. The malvidol-3-glucoside
was the main anthocyanin identified in the extract. A high amount of tartaric acid was also found.
GME showed significant antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and lower activity
against Gram-negative bacteria
Research on the presence of anti infectious bronchitis virus antibodies in broiler reared in South-Western part of Romania – preliminary study
Avian infectious bronchitis (AIB) is one of the most important contagious, respiratory, acute diseases with a very high
economic impact, caused by the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) one of the most widespread coronaviruses in the
world belonging to the genus Gammacoronavirus. The clinical evolution is characterised by the presence of respiratory,
reproductive and renal disorders. The aim of the study was to show the presence of IBV antibodies in vaccinated broiler
chickens and to determine the post-vaccinal origin or following infection with circulating wild strains. Ninety-six serum
samples from broiler, Ross 308, aged between 38 and 42 days, reared on five farms from five counties located in southwestern
Romania were studied. Analysis of the serum samples for antibodies was carried out by ELISA, staggered, at
the Synevovet Romania laboratory. Anti-IBV antibodies were identified in all farms studied. The absence of IBV
antibodies was observed in 12.5% of the samples examined. Anti-IBV antibodies were detected in 87.5% of the sera
studied. Very high values of antibody titters, above those indicated by the vaccine efficacy evaluation guidelines, were
recorded in 2/3 of the sera studied, suggesting a possible infection with wild strains. The results of the present study
indicate the need to extend the evaluation of IBV antibody titters for a clearer picture of the evolution of the infection,
but also molecular studies to differentiate vaccine strains from wild strains
Studii termodinamice privind retenția Cd (II) din medii apoase pe nanoparticule de lignină din iarbă Sarkanda
Due to its high toxicity and its capacity to accumulate and contaminate, cadmium is a potentially harmful substance for all ecosystems and humans or animals in the contaminated area. The present study proposes as a substrate for the adsorption of Cd (II) from aqueous medium, in static conditions, a fraction of biomass represented by chemically unmodified Sarkanda Grass lignin nanoparticles, demonstrating through thermodynamic considerations the efficiency of this bioresource
Research on soil degradation resulting from sheet and gully erosion processes. Case study – the Raul Alb hydrographic basin, Dambovita county, up to the point it meets Barbuletu stream
The research works focused on the upper hydrographic basin of the Raul Alb creek up to the point it meets Barbuletu
stream, covering an area of 4 034 ha and aimed at establishing the degree of soil degradation as a result of the complex
action of sheet and gully erosion. Following the pedological study, seven soil types have been identified, each with
several subtypes, which fall into five large soil classes. Regosols account for 51.00% of the catchment area, followed by
eutric cambisols, 18.70%, rendzic leptosols 11.55% and phaeozems 11.00%. The fluvisol, anthrosol and luvisol total
7.75% of the entire basin. The class of Entisols is present in 56.10% of the area, followed by Mollisols 22.55% and
Inceptisols 18.70% of the analysed area. The Entisol class (eroded phases) is to be found in 2.26% of the area, whereas
the Alfisols account only for 0.39% of the hydrographic basin. In terms of sheet erosion, slightly eroded lands represent
48.26% of the total of 4 034 ha investigated, followed by the moderately eroded ones, 43.97%, whereas 2.27% of soils
are strongly and excessively eroded and only 5.50% are not affected by sheet erosion. Deep water erosion is represented
by rills, gullies and ravines. Gullies can be found in 35 of the 43 units of identified soils, ravines are present in 2 soil
units and only 5 soil units are not affected by gully erosion
Research of water losses in the pipe network of the sprinkler irrigation plot
The paper presents the results of research on water losses from the pipe network of irrigation plots still in the exploitation
phase in Romania. These plotters have a long service life, considering their creation about 40-50 years ago. The advanced
degree of wear and tear of network components, especially pipes and hydrants, led to the occurrence and maintenance of
water losses. The assessment of water losses is done directly on site by measurements on the pipe network. The simulation
of water losses is carried out by using appropriate calculation programs in this field (Epanet and its extensions, Hydra,
AutoCad, ArcMap), with the use of databases created in Excel and Word. The simulation requires a complex data base
collected from the field, from the design documentation and from the network operation process. The input data required in
the analysis program are represented by sets of word, excel, .xlș and .dxf files and so on. The results obtained by
simulation are exported in tables, graphs, curves of variation of hydraulic parameters and other
18F-FDG PET/MRI Imaging in a Preclinical Rat Model of Cardiorenal Syndrome—An Exploratory Study
Cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) denotes the bidirectional interaction of chronic kidney disease and heart failure with an adverse prognosis but with a limited understanding of its pathogenesis. This study correlates biochemical blood markers, histopathological and immunohistochemistry features, and 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) metabolic data in low-dose doxorubicin-induced heart failure, cardiorenal syndrome, and renocardiac syndrome induced on Wistar male rats. To our knowledge, this is the first study that investigates the underlying mechanisms for CRS progression in rats using 18F-FDG PET. Clinical, metabolic cage monitoring, biochemistry, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry combined with PET/MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) data acquisition at distinct points in the disease progression were employed for this study in order to elucidate the available evidence of organ crosstalk between the heart and kidneys. In our CRS model, we found that chronic treatment with low-dose doxorubicin followed by acute 5/6 nephrectomy incurred the highest mortality among the study groups, while the model for renocardiac syndrome resulted in moderate-to-high mortality. 18F-FDG PET imaging evidenced the doxorubicin cardiotoxicity with vascular alterations, normal kidney development damage, and impaired function. Given the fact that standard clinical markers were insensitive to early renal injury, we believe that the decreasing values of the 18F-FDG PET-derived renal marker across the groups and, compared with their age-matched controls, along with the uniform distribution seen in healthy developing rats, could have a potential diagnostic and prognostic yield in cardiorenal syndrome
