    Mammary gland development in dogs and cats in relation to their sexual cycle

    The mammary gland is a modified sweat gland specialized in milk secretion, whose development is synchronized with the sexual function, being directly influenced by the stages of the sexual cycle in both canids and felines. Knowledge of morphology and physiology is essential for a correct approach of the mammary diseases, an important pathology affecting two categories: the adult female and the newborns. There are numerous controversies in the literature regarding the terminology and duration of the dog and cat sexual cycle, leading to the existent variability of the information. However, for the bitch it is unanimously accepted that most canine breeds have two estrous periods per year, usually in spring and autumn. This period can be systematically divided into proestrus, estrus, luteal phase and anestrus. In this species, the proestrus and estrus periods are long and necessarily accompanied by a long luteal phase. These are then followed by anestrus, which is not influenced by the season, unlike the cat. The queen is a seasonally polyestrous animal, which in the absence of mating goes into estrus every 2-3 weeks throughout the breeding season. She will have repeated cycles in the breeding season, which will only be interrupted by gestation, pseudo-gestation or various ailments. The aim of this review is to describe the estrus cycle in dogs and cats, and its connection with mammary gland development, a gland with unique growth due to the fact that the final stage of development is reached in the adult female only during gestation

    It has been demonstrated that platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a preparation of plasma enriched with a platelet level above the baseline, is essential for the process of tissue regeneration. Over the past ten years, PRP has drawn more attention as an unusual form of therapy. Applications of PRP in animals have demonstrated varying degrees of efficacy in treating a wide range of medical conditions, ranging from ovarian insufficiency to musculoskeletal ailments. Although there are currently few therapeutic PRP uses in farm animals, the encouraging findings of a number of research will likely lead to a rise in interest in PRP use among farmers and veterinarians. In animal reproduction, PRP can be used to enhance follicular growth, oocyte competence, and the uterine environment to boost the implantation rate of the embryos

    Field tests of a John Deere harvester for the purpose of production maps achievement

    Errors in the generation of production maps can arise from many causes and are practically inevitable. Even though errors will occur, production data can be improved by following a few best practices. The primary methods for improving harvest data should always be the calibration and proper operation of the combine. In cases where this is not possible or where errors occur, the John Deere Operations Center offers data analysis tools through filtering, postcalibration, and improving the visualization of production maps. These practices will result in obtaining accurate data on which agronomic decisions can be made for subsequent farming years. Mapping productions using the John Deere S780i harvester combine and its associated systems provides the farmer with valuable information about their farm, which can be used to make informed and calculated decisions to increase overall productivity, sustainability, and profitability of the agricultural farm

    Unusual Canine Distemper Virus Infection in Captive Raccoons (Procyon lotor)

    Canine morbillivirus, also known as canine distemper virus (CDV), is the causative agent of canine distemper (CD), which is a serious contagious disease of canines, large felids, and, occasionally, raccoons. This study included seven raccoons from the Timisoara Zoological Garden, Romania. CDV was detected using RT-qPCR on blood samples, but several other exams were also performed—clinical, bacteriological, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and histopathology, toxicological screening, and necropsy—which confirmed CDV infection. Severe digestive disorders (diarrhea and frequent hematemesis) were observed. The necropsy findings included pseudo membranous gastroenteritis, congestion, and pulmonary edema in two raccoons. Immunohistochemistry showed immunolabeled CDV antigenantibodies on the viral nucleocapsid. Histopathology revealed lymphocyte depletion in mesenteric lymphnodes and intranuclear and intracytoplasmic inclusions in the enterocytes of the small intestine. Based on the RT-qPCR assay, laboratory tests, and the lesions observed, it was established that the raccoons were infected with CDV, which was the cause of death in two cases. The results from the necropsy, histology, and immunohistochemistry in the raccoons are comparable with reported CDV lesions in dogs. In conclusion, several exams may be performed to establish the etiology of possible interspecific viral infection, but only very specific exams can identify aCDV infection. Laboratory analyses must be completed by RT-qPCR assay or IHC to establish infection with uncommon viruses in raccoons with high accuracy

    Climatic conditions, genotype and appropriate technology are very important for successful wine cultivation and obtaining quality products. To describe a wine-growing climatic zone, climatic parameters were used, which show the binary and ternary interaction between climatic conditions: light, temperature, humidity, precipitation and solar radiation. Through current research, it was aimed to highlight the influence of climatic conditions on the organoleptic characteristics of rosé wines from the Fetească neagră and Busuioacă de Bohotin grapes obtained during the years 20202021. This study includes the description of the Strunga viticultural center, the technological flow of obtaining the chosen wines, results of physical-chemical analyzes and sensory characteristics of wines varieties respectively V1 and V2, V3 and V4 .This two wine variants from 2020 have a lower acidity but at the same time a higher alcohol concentration compared to those from the 2021 harvest. The results of the research in terms of sensory evaluation revealed that both variants of the year 2021 were the most appreciated for most of the characteristics

    Determination of radiographic vertebral heart score and vertebral left atrial size cutoff based on echocardiographic left atrial size in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease

    Progression of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs is a common cause of left atrial enlargement. Recently, a classification of left atrial (LA) size based on echocardiographic measurement has been proposed. This study aims to determine the radiographic LA size by reporting the cutoff values of VHS and VLAS for different groups of echocardiographic-measured LA size in dogs with MMVD. This retrospective analytical cross-sectional study included dogs diagnosed with MMVD grouped based on the echocardiographic LA size into normal (LA/Ao 2.2) and were compared with ACVIM classification. VHS and VLAS were measured on the right lateral radiograph for each dog and cutoff values were calculated. One hundred and three dogs with MMVD were included in the study. A very strong positive correlation was observed between LA/Ao ratio and VHS (rs, 0.823, P < .01) or VLAS (rs, 0.834, P < .01). For VHS, a cutoff of 10.7 v, 11 v, and 11.5 v were established for echocardiographic LA thresholds of 1.6, 1.9, and 2.2 with a sensitivity of 79%, 92%, and 90% and a specificity of 97%, 90.7%, and 78.1%, respectively. For VLAS, a cutoff of 2.5 v, 2.7 v, and 2.9 v were established for echocardiographic LA cutoffs of 1.6, 1.9, and 2.2 with a sensitivity of 73%, 80%, and 83.3% and a specificity of 94%, 92%, and 86.3%, respectively. The results of this study may facilitate clinical decisions based on radiographic examination in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease

    Juniperus chinensis is a species that can be easily managed as a bonsai. The technique of cultivating plants in the form of bonsai has been known since ancient times, from the Chinese, and the concept of the terrarium is relatively young, being known from the English. The terrarium is an innovative practice of combining the modern with the traditional art of bonsai. This experience involves creating a miniature ecosystem inside a glass container and incorporating bonsai-style directed plants as a central element of the design. By combining these two concepts, unique, miniature landscapes are created, and the style in which the bonsai are managed plays an important role in the appearance and condition of the terrarium.     Sustainable assessment of tomato yield can be carried out through the technological measures used. Early production allows farmers to better respond to early market demands. The aim of the work was to evaluate the influence of four tomato cultivars irrigated with two different irrigation norms on early and total production. The highest early yield was recorded in the hybrid Siriana F1 (41.35 t/ha), while the highest total yield was obtained by the cultivar HTP F1 (143.27 t/ha). As for the combined interaction of factors on early yield, it ranged from 22.11 t/ha in the case of the variety Inima de bou, irrigated with 300 m3/ha, to 42.19 t/ha in the case of the hybrid Siriana, irrigated with 400 m3/ha
