The research was carried out on the sloping land from the Agricultural Research Station of Podu- Iloaiei, Iasi (47°12´ N latitude, 27°16´ E longitude) and the Experimental Farm of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Ezareni (47°07´ N latitude, 27°30´ E longitude) on a cambic chernozem (SRTS-2003). The parameters analyzed were soil texture, bulk density, aggregate stability (physical characteristics) as well as soil pH, SOM, basic cations (Ca, Mg, K), N and P (chemical characteristics). The climatic conditions in the Moldavian Plain were characterized by annual mean temperature of 9.6oC and a mean rainfall amount, on 50 years, of 553.5 mm, of which 141.5 mm during September-December and 412.0 mm during January-August. At the beginning of the sampling, the study of the researched area was carried out and the GPS was used to identify the geographic location and the coordinate system in the researched areas. Data on soil properties were recorded on thematic maps, scale 1: 2000 and processed using the AutoCAD software. The results obtained on soil erosion indicate that from the total amount of precipitation recorded – 549.8 mm, 338.5 mm (61.6%) generated leaks that varied between 8.2 mm at perennial grasses in the second year of vegetation and 33.4- 35.9 mm at maize and sun flower crops. The annual soil losses due to erosion raged between 0.193 t/ha at perennial grasses in the second year of vegetation and 7.657-8.328 t/ha at maize and sunflower. The percent of hydrostable aggregates ranged between 65.5% at non-eroded soil from the base of the slope and 35.7 at highly eroded soil. Soil erosion caused a reduction in the percentage of aggregate by 14.5% to slightly eroded soil and 37.7% in the strongly eroded soil. The percentage of water stable aggregates was comprised between 73.5% in non-eroded soil, at the bottom of slope land and 45.7% at the highly eroded soil. Erosion influences soil fertility by removing along with the eroded soil, high amounts of mineral elements: 15.02 – 16.36 kg/ha nitrogen, 1.05 – 1.2 kg/ha phosphorus and 1.84 – 2.08 kg/ha potassium, in maize and sunflower crops. The crop structure, which determined the diminution in mean soil losses by erosion until 2.2 t/ha included 20 % straw cereals, 20% annual legumes, 20% row crops and 40 % perennial grasses and legumes. On land with a slope of 16%, lowering the percentage of weeding plants from 60% to 20% has reduced the amount of eroded soil by 47.1% (1.966 t/ha/y). At Ezareni, on the land with a 12% overall slope, given the agro-terraced process that appeared in time due to soil erosion and tillage, the slope of cultivated stripes decreased, depending on the slope of the land, to 7.40-10.78% and the slope of the taluses increased from 12.78 to 26.18%. At Podu-Iloaiei, on the land with a general slope of 13%, through the agro-terracing process, the slo

Permanent grasslands are an important source of fodder, due to the areas that they occupy, but also to high and good quality production that can be obtained from them. By using a rational management, grassland production may rise considerably. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of harvesting phenophase under the influence of organic and mineral fertilization on the productivity, composition and structure of vegetation cover of a grassland of Festuca valesiaca Schleich. ex. Gaudin. The researches were conducted at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Iasi, Ezareni farm (47°05'-47°10' north latitude and 27°28'-27°33' eastern longitude). The experimental factors were represented by the harvesting phenophase, with three graduations: a1-harvested at plant height of 15-18 cm, a2-harvested at the ear formation (control) and a3-harvested to full flowering and fertilization with seven graduations: b1- unfertilized (control), b2-N50P50K0 kg·ha-1 annually, b3-N75P75K0 kg·ha-1 annually, b4-N100P100K0 kg·ha-1 annually, b5-10 Mg·ha-1 sheep manure annually, b6-20 Mg·ha-1 annually and b7-30 Mg·ha-1 annually sheep manure applied at two years. The results obtained showed that dry matter production was influenced both by the harvest phenophase and the fertilizer doses used, the higher dry matter production values obtained in the fertilized variants with N100P100K0 kg·ha-1 annually and 30 Mg·ha-1 of two-year-old sheep manure harvested in full-flowering phenophase of the dominant species. Both harvesting in different phenophases, but especially fertilization, led to the modification of structure of vegetation cover by favoring valuable species from fodder point of view

In recent years, turtles have become more and more common as pets, while owners are not properly informed about their care. Thus, the pathology of this species in 90% of cases are caused by neglecting microclimate and nutrition conditions. The requirements of turtles are also according to their type (terrestrial tortoises or aquatic turtles). They need an environment as close as possible to their natural environment, a habitat with temperature, humidity, UV light and food which offer a maximum comfort. This paper aims to underline the importance of the feeding and microclimate conditions on turtle’s welfare and health. The clinical study was performed on turtles (different species: Testudo hermanni hermanni, Emys orbicularis and Trachemys scripta) that were referred to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Iasi between 2015- 2017. The main disorders noticed were consisting in vitamin and mineral imbalances, oral and ocular lesions, impaired development of the shell. After a careful physical examination which was correlated with turtle`s history given by the owner who described how the turtles are feed and where they are kept, an appropriate therapy has been recommended and adapted according to the symptoms severity (adequate diet, supplements with vitamins and minerals, improvement of microclimate conditions). When owners are respecting the doctor`s indication, the animal`s conditions is visibly improving after 2-3 months. Therefore, the main inconvenient of this long term treatment is the owner`s attitude, who is expecting good results in a short time and in some cases he renounces to follow the recommendations

It is well known in history that the rapid development of culture, civilization, technology and industry of the population from certain areas of the globe has been favored by a favorable environment, either geographically and climate or from the perspective of the absence of internal or external conflicts, by the presence on their territories of mineral or flora and fauna resources, or even their own human resource. Extrapolating the idea above, this paper seeks, at the smaller scale of a city nowadays, how the environmentally arranged landscape can beneficially influence the overall development of the urbanarea, but especially of its inhabitants, from the point of view of physically-psychological-sanogenic, but also socially and culturally, with examples from the city of Ias

The objective of this study is to establish the prevalence of hypertension in a group of cats and highlight the importance of the measurement of blood pressure routinely during the initial clinical exam within veterinary medicine. The study of the pathogenesis of hypertension by differentiating primary from secondary hypertension while detailing the diseases with which it is associated. In contrast to humans, essential or idiopathic hypertension is rare in veterinary patients. In cats, systemic hypertension is most often associated with another disease or condition such as: kidney failure, disease, hyperadrenocorticism, hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma, primary hyperaldosteronism, diabetes mellitus and obesity

The saline grasslands, a suitable environment for maintaining the functional relationships of the edaphic mesofauna?

    No full text
This study represents a continuation of research carried out in Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, within the Core Program, financed by the Romanian Ministry of Research and Innovation. Communities of edaphic microarthropods in halophilic ecosystems of D.D.B.R. have been investigated to assess their vulnerability. The analysis was performed qualitatively and quantitatively, on systematic and trophic groups, in a space-time dynamic. The obtained results have shown that the structural features of edaphic mesofauna depend both on the vegetation and the biopedoclimatic conditions, in general the halophilic habitats being restrictive for most edaphic microarthropods. The highest density is observed in a salinized wet meadow, characterized by a great floral diversity. The lowest population abundance was recorded in the grassland with the poorest vegetation, where Salicornia europaea is the only dominant species. The analysis of the relationships between the trophic groups highlights the dominance of the detritomicrophytophages versus zoophages, a situation that is usually found in meadow ecosystems. The analysis of the seasonal dynamics of the mesofauna as a whole revealed that in most of the studied ecosystems, under summer drought conditions there was a decrease in the total number of edaphic mesofauna (1.6-4.3 times), the most significant decrease (2 -20 times) being the number of springtails that are known to be susceptible to edaphic dryness. The numerical ratio between oribatid mites and springtails (the main groups of detritomicrophytophages) is in most cases supraunitary, indicating that in the nutrient cycling the humification processes are predominant

Lung-Digit syndrome associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical findings in three cats

    No full text
Feline lung-digit syndrome (FLDS) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) are rare diseases, recently diagnosed in feline patients. FLDS is a particular condition recognised, so far, only in cats and not in other species. IPF was also described in humans and, as in cats, it was associated with pulmonary cancer. Primary pulmonary cancer in cats is rarely encountered, representing about 0.69-0.75%. Most of the digital tumors diagnosed in feline patients represent metastasis of the pulmonary tumors (87.5%). The aim of this study is to describe clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical aspects in three cases of lung-digit syndrome associated with IPF. Two cats with chronic respiratory distress were submitted to the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Cluj-Napoca) for pathological examination. The third cat was clinically diagnosed with lung-digit syndrome and only the affected digit was submitted for histopathological diagnosis. The complete history, physical and radiological exams were available in two of the cases. The samples collected during necropsy were evaluated by cytological (Dia Quick Panoptic stain) and histopathological (H&E and TM stains) exams. The previous exams were followed by immunohistochemistry, using antibodies against multi-cytokeratin (MCK) and vimentin (VIM). Additionally, K-RAS and P-53 immunoexpression was evaluated in all samples. The thoracic radiographs showed a diffuse mixt pattern (bronchial and alveolar) with evidence of a pulmonary mass; the affected digit presented severe osteolysis of the third and second phalanx. Histologically, 2 cases of adenosquamous carcinoma and one case of adenocarcinoma (tubulo-papillary type) were diagnosed. Lung- digit syndrome was confirmed in all cases. The histopathological diagnosis was supported in all cases by IHC results, including positive reaction of the neoplastic epithelial cells for MCK and negative for Vimentin. Moreover, the neoplastic epithelial cells showed an intense positive reaction for KRAS and negative reaction for P53. FLDS and IPF are rarely encountered in cats. An association between these two syndromes was identified in 2 out of the three cases. KRAS mutation may represent an important predisposing factor in development of pulmonary adenocarcinoma in cats. Further and more complex studies using a larger number of cases are required in order to establish the role of KRAS pathway in feline pulmonary cancer). Other studies are also required in order to establish the responsible trigger mechanism for lung-digit syndrome and if there is a correlation with the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
