    Fast assessment of pulmonary hypertension type in dogs using basic ultrasonography techniques

    Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a complex hemodynamic condition defined by increased pulmonary vasculature pressure. The precise diagnostic can be obtained by evaluating the clinical status of the patient, performing complex imaging methods and by direct assessment of pulmonary arterial pressure. Invasive methods are considered golden standard; however, these techniques are limited in animals with respiratory failure. Previous studies aimed to evaluate the cut-off value of the PV/PA ratio in different types of PH in dogs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to correlate the type of PH with the changes of the pulmonary vein to pulmonary artery ratio (PV/PA) in dogs assessed by transthoracic echocardiography. The ratio was assessed using the right parasternal long axis view of the heart in B-mode and Mmode. This retrospective study included thirty-nine dogs presented for cardiologic examination at our Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dogs were divided in three groups as following: control group (n=10), precapillary PH group (n=16) and postcapillary PH group (n=13). The median and interquartile range (M±IQR) of the PV/PA ratio were 0.95 (0.79– 1.5) in the control group, 0.85 (0.55-0.92) in precapillary PH group and 1.86 (1.44-2.16) in the postcapillary PH group. The area under the curve (AUC) for the PV/PA ratio comparison between the control and postcapillary PH groups was 1 (P<0.05), suggesting a cut-off ratio of 1.17 for the postcapillary PH group. This value is lower than the previous suggested value (>1.7). The importance of this finding derives from the ability to observe early changes induced by PH in dogs diagnosed with different stages of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), even when the tricuspid regurgitating jet cannot be assessed

    Supplements to the problem of energy consumption in reducing lignocelluloses biomass size to produce energy

    This article presents complementary results on experimental data on the process of reducing the size of plant biomass by mechanical cutting. According to the source of the experimental data, the problem of statistical modelling of the main parameters describing the process of biomass reduction was approached. A more comprehensive formulation of the list of main system parameters was also attempted, which should be considered in a minimal mathematical model. The results of this article are starting points for a systemic approach to this biomass processing process. A first systematization is fixing 13 parameters that are included in the model of the biomass size reduction phenomenon. The 13 model parameters are divided into three categories: input parameters (5), adjustment parameters (4) and output parameters (4). The performances of the interpolation formulas are evaluated using the global error and the maximum error, varying between 1% and 0.1% for the prior and 3.8% and 0.34% for the latter. Some mathematical models suggest the existence of optimal operating points. Their exploitation can only come as a result of new high-resolution experimental research, at least in terms of rotation speed

    Osmosis between human capital and development and its impact on the 21st century economy - a review

    In the knowledge-based economy of the 21stcentury, educated human resources are seen as a capital asset invested in the entity, and human capital theory seeks to explain, from an economic perspective, the phenomena arising from this process. The development of education and scientific spheres requires huge long-term investments, which must be analyzed from a social approach. Neither evaluation experience nor the methods applied provide a clear-cut solution, so evaluating an investment in human capital is a complex problem from both a practical and a scientific point of view. This research started from the hypothesis that investing in human capital will provide competitive advantage and sustainability in the complex world of the economic environment, reviewing the theory and evidence on the economics of human capital. Triangulation was chosen as a research method being considered the most adequate for the expected results and additionally because it allows to identify the most relevant aspects of this field that endorsed the proposed hypothesis. The main conclusion and results are that the emphasis has been placed on human capital just at the personal level, rather than at the level of unity and organization. Furthermore, research into the channels that have a causal effect on development has revealed that education is considered an instrument of developing human capital that promotes direct economic growth. Data analysis demonstrates that the theory of human capital is a convincing explanation for economic growth. In addition, the findings of the research have shown that the debate over equality vs. efficiency in economic development is centred on the human capital dimension

    Seaweed culture, post-harvest processing, and market generation for employment of coastal poor communities in Cox's Bazar

    Seaweed farming is one of the aquaculture industries with the greatest growth rate worldwide, with an annual production of over 33 billion tonnes, and a value of USD$11.8 billion which is predicted to treble by 2024. The current study was conducted in the Bakkhali River estuary and set out to survey the seaweed cultivation, processing, marketing status of the seaweed farmers and evaluate its financial benefits. Gracilaria lemaneiformis and Ulva intestinalis were cultured using the rope methods. The yield of G. lemaneiformis and U. intestinalis was good (Ten 15 m long ropes were used in each of the 45 plots, produced 7770 kg of G. lemaneiformis in the first 15 days while using ten 15 m long ropes were in each of the plots of U. intestinalis produced 2300 kg). Water parameters viz. temperature, salinity, pH, DO and transparency were checked every 15 days. According to previous literature, winter was determined to be the most productive time for seaweed development in Bangladesh. Seaweed was processed by the sun drying method and sold to retail clients, neighborhood shops and markets, and representatives in Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachari district, where G. lemaneiformis attracting the higher price. The income of seaweed farmers has increased more than in the previous years to maintain their family. Most of the farmers used raw seaweed as traditional medicine for the treatment of gastric problem (80%), diabetes (5%), blood pressure (3%) and cancer (2%). They also used seaweed as an additive with other vegetables, mutton and chicken. Education for coastal people is very difficult, but after cultivating seaweed, about 60% of farmers can afford their children's education cost and about 85% of the households had electric fans, while the majority had mobile phones. The costbenefit analysis demonstrated that seaweed cultivation is highly profitable

    Euler’s totient function applied to complete hypergroups

    We study the Euler's totient function (called also the Euler's phi function) in the framework of finite complete hypergroups. These are algebraic hypercompositional structures constructed with the help of groups, and endowed with a multivalued operation, called hyperoperation. On them the Euler's phi function is multiplicative and not injective. In the second part of the article we find a relationship between the subhypergroups of a complete hypergroup and the subgroups of the group involved in the construction of the considered complete hypergroup. As sample application of this connection, we state a formula that relates the Euler's totient function defined on a complete hypergroup to the same function applied to its subhypergroups

    Research on minor riverbed morphology in the presence of anthropogenic risk factors

    The change in the morphological parameters of the minor bed takes place under the influence of natural and anthropogenic modelling factors. The minor river beds located in the urban areas are intensively affected by the presence of anthropogenic risk factors. The research carried out on the Bahlui River in the area of the city of Iasi highlighted important changes in the minor river bed determined by the regularization works carried out asymmetrically in the river bed. The presence of rainwater drains is an important anthropogenic factor of erosion of the minor bed. In this case, in the minor river bed, there is an important differentiation in the cross section between hydraulic parameters (maximum velocities, roughness, erosion force), a situation that leads to the intense erosion of the right bank
