Antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria isolated from urine samples in dogs

    No full text
Urinary tract infections are very common in dogs, while the number of antimicrobials available for therapy has decreased due to the adaptation and evolution of bacterial populations. The aim of the study was to establish the prevalence of the main etiological agents involved in the pathogenesis of urinary tract infections, antimicrobial susceptibility and treatment alternatives. For this study, 50 dogs of different breeds, both females and males, aged between 2 years and 13 years were considered. The experimental part of this study took place between February 2018 and May 2019 in the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cluj-Napoca. Samples were processed using microscopic and cultural examinations. The Petri dishes were inoculated and incubated for 24 hours at 37°C, and interpreted, analyzing the cultural and morphological characteristics of the bacterial colonies as well as the presence or absence of haemolysis areas. The identification of bacterial species was performed by microscopic examination of cells from isolated colonies and biochemical examinations. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed by Mueller-Hinton agar disk diffusion technique. The most frequently isolated bacterial strain was E. coli, present in 21 samples of 54 (38.8%), followed by Staphylococcus spp. in 16 (29.6%), Streptococcus spp., present in 10 samples (18.5%), Proteus spp. with 4 samples (7.4%), and Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas spp., each present in 3 (5.5%). Bacterial associations were only observed in 7 samples, mainly involving E. coli and Proteus spp., while 4 samples were negative for bacterial growth. Increased susceptibility was observed for enrofloxacin, doxycycline and amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, while increased resistance was recorded for cefovecin, cephalexin and trimethoprim

Low yield of rice has made reaching self-sufficiency level in Malaysia elusive. So, Malaysia has become a target of rice exporting countries within and outside Asia. To solve this problem, a pre-sowing seed treatment was used as a physiological intervention to alleviate the impeding problems of achieving better growth and yield of Malaysian rice variety MR219. A glass house experiment, which involved the use of solutions of osmotic salts and plant hormones, was used for this investigation. Data on germination percentages, height, number of tillers and productive tillers, tiller efficiency and yield were taken. In both osmopriming and hormonal priming treatments, the highest number of tillers and productive tillers were from pre-germination. The tallest plants from osmopriming were from 150mM treatment, while 50 ppm GA3 had the tallest in hormonal priming. The highest tiller efficiency for osmopriming was from 150mM and and 200mM sodium chloride, while in hormonal priming it was 200 ppm salicylic acid. For yield per panicle in osmopriming, it was 50mM and 100mM magnesium chloride that had the highest, while in hormonal priming it was 200 ppm methyl jasmonate. Finally, the highest grain yield per hill was produced by 200 ppm methyl jasmonate in hormonal priming, while 50Mm magnesium chloride had the highest yield in osmotic priming. So, it is concluded that the use of 200 ppm methyl jasmonate and 50Mm magnesium chloride could be used as potential hormonal priming and osmopriming, respectively, for yield improvement of MR219 rice in Malaysia

The paper presents an analysis of how to make drip irrigation systems in the plantations of shrubs and fruit trees located in the Plain and the Plateau of Moldavia. Over the last 20 years, drip irrigation systems have been designed for horticultural plantings on relatively small (4-8 ha) areas of a farm. The research shows some shortcomings in the design concept of the irrigation system, starting with the layout scheme, the selection of the watering equipment and the calculation of the operating parameters. The analysis shows that some of the irrigation systems are not carried out according to the characteristics of the wetted horticulture, the pedoclimatic parameters of the soil, the volume of water available at source, etc

Studies regarding the clinical management optimization in babesiosis in dogs

    No full text
The diagnosis of canine babesiosis is based, most of the times, on the patients’ clinical signs, correlated with the ticks’ parasitism, the emergence season, but the most important clue is performing the laboratory exams. The manifestations of the disease had, in most of the studied individuals, as a characteristic, the well- known clinical tetrad: fever, icterus, anemia and hemoglobinuria, mentioning that for the diagnosis confirmation it was necessary to perform the blood smear microscopic examination and to detect the intracellular parasites or the damaged erythrocytes. In the group of dogs with babesiosis, the haematological examination revealed a distinctly significant (p0.05) of the creatinine’s mean value, compared with those of the control group. Thus, a major role in the pathogenesis of the renal function impairment in dogs with babesiosis can be attributed to the septic-toxic state induced by the intraerythrocytic parasites. The mean value of the bilirubin in the group of dogs with babesiosis was distinctly significant higher (p<0.01) compared to the control group, a sign of massive erythrocytes’ degradation, which stands at the basis of the haemolytic anemia diagnosis and thus the liver function decrease, translated by the significant increase (p<0.05) of the hepatocellular injury specific enzymes activity (ALT). Another biochemical change was hypoglycaemia. In this context, the association between severe anemia and hypoglycaemia may be explained by the effect of hypoxia on the glycolysis and by the fact that the severity of the anemia is closely related to the disease severity and the inflammatory response intensity, which may lead to an intensification of metabolic processes and, consequently, to an excessive glucose consumption

Reducing the determination errors of the international normalized ratio by using plasma cogulation calibrators

    No full text
The objective was to use of a minimum number of ISI (International Sensitivity Index) to determine the International Normalized Ratio (INR). This specific calibration methods allowed to calculate ISI for all other thromboplastines comparative with the reference thromboplastine. Bigger values than 1 show a decrease sensitivity, as compared with the reference thromboplastine. The Prothrombin Time (PT) values are not the same in all laboratory because of differences in sensitivity of thromboplastins used. To standardize the same results in any laboratory, an INR (International Normalised Ratio) constant has been introduced. Estimation of thromboplastine sensitivity is useful in any laboratory involved in the medical control of therapy with AVK, being also helpull for the clinicians to find out a suitable curative dealing

Innovative methods in the teaching process: the boomerang model

    No full text
The starting point of this research is chapter 2.3. "Models for lesson planning" from the volume Deutsch Lehren Lernen 6 (Ende K., Grotjahn R., Kleppin K., Mohr I., 2013). In this section it is a description of the teaching process, which Jeremy Harmer (2007) called the "boomerang model". Because I noticed the German language learners have difficulty in understanding and in acquiring language structures and grammatical rules, and because they were inhibited to express themselves in a foreign language and made many grammatical mistakes, I introduced this method in the course. According to this model, the teacher motivates the students in the initial phase; it arouses interest and establishes a task, such as the correct application of prepositions (where? / wo and wohin in German). The advantage of this method is the development of autonomy in the learning process, and the discovery of the grammatical rules, of the linguistic means, necessary for the accomplishment of the work tasks which is coming naturally

Effect of food expenditure on farming households’ welfare in Osun state, Nigeria

    No full text
Food and nutrition security remain Africa’s most fundamental challenge for human welfare and economic growth. In this study, recent survey data from Osun State, Nigeria, was used to examine the effect of food expenditure on farming households’ welfare in Nigeria. Logistic and OLS regression models were the analytical tools used. Food Insecurity Gap (FIG) and Squared Food Insecurity Gap (SFIG) were used to capture the severity of food insecurity among the households. The results showed that, all households sampled consume rice, beans, vegetable, fish and oil as basic food items, while only 32% of them consume potatoes. The regression results showed that the household size, per capita income, dependency ratio and age were the highly significant factors influencing food expenditure. However, the coping strategy that was mostly adopted by the farmers in the study area was to cut down on the numbers of food items consumed. Therefore, it was recommended that farm mechanization should be encouraged for optimal land use and productivity. In all, promoting agricultural policies with appropriate price incentives that focus on intensification, diversification and resource-stabilizing innovations will create more wealth for all categories of farming households and this in turn will ensure food security, especially in an era of economic deregulation

Allelopathic effects of sheesham extracts on germination and seedling growth of common wheat

Interactions between plants represent an important aspect of ecology, which enables them to properly utilize the available resources in the given environment. The interactions are mediated by different mechanisms, among which allelopathy is a significant one. During allelopathic interactions, plants tend to suppress competitors plants or stimulate those which can help them adjust in the environment in a better manner. Such interactions are triggered by the release of chemical compounds termed, as allelochemicals, which have an important role in agricultural modulation. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the allelopathic effects of leaf and bark extracts of sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo L.) on germination data of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Auqab. Different concentrations (7 g/l, 14 g/l, and 21 g/l) of sundried leaf and bark extracts, obtained after 12, 24 and 36 h of soaking duration were tested for germination %, mean germination time (MGT), plumule and radicle length and seedling dry weight. It was observed that germination % was negatively affected by 21 g leaf and bark extract concentration at 36 h soaking duration, but not by lower concentration or soaking durations. MGT was significantly increased by leaf and bark extracts at three concentration levels, as well as soaking durations. Plumule and radicle length responded negatively to both leaf and bark extracts at higher concentration and when soaking duration was increased. Seedling dry weight was increased by 7 g leaf extracts at 36 h, but reduced by 21g at 12 and 24 h soaking durations. On the other hand, 21 g of bark extracts at 12, 24 and 36 h soaking duration resulted in significantly increased dry biomass. These results suggest negative allelopathy of Sheesham on studied germination parameters of wheat, except radicle length and dry biomass
