Diagnosis and treatment of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infestation in cats - case report
Studies on Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infestation in domestic cats are limited, both for Europe and globally. Diagnosis
is quite laborious and often the infestation is not included in the differential diagnosis of respiratory diseases, a fact
which leads to a late diagnosis that endangers the life of the animal, even causing its death. In case of massive
infestation, respiratory symptoms are complemented by a diarrhoeal syndrome and anorexia. In June 2023 at the
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Iasi, Romania, a cat (common breed, male, aged 1 year and 4 months) came with
respiratory symptoms, chronic cough, shortness of breath, mucopurulent nasal discharge, accelerated breathing and loss
of appetite. The cat had previously been treated for chronic bronchitis. Radiological interpretation was of an intensified
interstitial lung pattern with nodular and bronchial appearance, compatible with chronic micro-bronchitis. The first
diagnosis was pneumonia, but following symptomatic treatment the results were not satisfactory. Following
coproparasitological examination the result was infestation with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and antiparasitic treatment
was instituted
Evaluation of the Antibacterial Properties of Polyvinyl Alcohol-Pullulan Scaffolds Loaded with Nepeta racemosa Lam. Essential Oil and Perspectives for Possible Applications
Essential oil of Nepeta racemosa Lam. was extracted and characterized to determine its antimicrobial activity and potential use in applications. The essential oil was loaded on polyvinyl alcohol-pullulan films and gels and characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy before having its antimicrobial capacities assessed. The essential oil extracted from Nepeta racemosa Lam. was characterized using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, which indicated that the most abundant component was nepetalic acid (55.5%), followed by eucalyptol (10.7%) and other compounds with concentrations of about 5% or less. The essential oil, as well as the loaded films and gels, exhibited good antibacterial activity on both gram-positive and gram-negative strains, with growth inhibition zones larger in some cases than for gentamicin, indicating excellent premises for using these essential-oil-loaded materials for applications in the food industry or biomedicine
Sustainable development of the mountain area through targeted investment programmes
The Mountain Law, No. 197 of July 20, 2018, regulates the methods of protection and sustainable and inclusive
development of the mountainous area through the valorization of natural and human resources, improvement of living
standards, population stabilization, preservation of cultural identity, and increase in economic power at the local and
national levels, all while maintaining ecological balance and protecting the natural environment. The mountainous area
of Romania is considered a special, strategic, economic, social, and environmental territory of national interest. Due to
limitations in the use of agricultural land caused by altitude, climate conditions, slopes, geological substrate, high costs
of works, living conditions, infrastructure, business environment, access to education, and medical services, it is
considered disadvantaged. Through the Mountain Law, the approval of the Program for Encouraging Activities in the
mountainous area is granted, with an allocation of 1 billion euros over a period of 10 years from its entry into force,
from the state budget, through the budget of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. This Program serves
as a source of support for performance in the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. There are funding programs for
investments in three areas aimed at the residents of the mountainous area: Investments for the establishment of milk
collection and/or processing centers; Investments for the establishment of mountain pastures; Investments for the
establishment of primary collection and processing centers for forest fruits, mushrooms, and/or medicinal and aromatic
plants. Beneficiaries of the investment programs can be individual authorized persons, individual enterprises, family
enterprises, producer groups, agricultural cooperatives, legal entities, and legal entities engaged in agriculture and/or the
food industry. Eligible beneficiaries, regardless of the type of investment they choose, must cumulatively meet the
following conditions: operate in the mountainous area, access only one type of investment once throughout the entire
Program period, and not have received similar support under the National Rural Development Program (PNDR) 2014-
2020, including during the transition period
The phytoremediation potential of Lavandula angustifolia Mill. grown in soils historically polluted with heavy metals: a case study from Baia Mare, Romania
The aim of this research is to
evaluate the ability of Lavandula
angustifolia Mill. (LA) to accumulate and
translocate heavy metals (HMs) from
disturbed soils. The study was conducted on
a site historically polluted with HMs, located
in Baia Mare, Romania. Soil samples and
underground (root) and aboveground parts of
plants (leaves and stems) were collected
from the study site and analysed for HM
content (Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn) by XRF
spectroscopy. The potential for
phytoremediation of lavender was evaluated
according to the bioconcentration (BCF) and
the translocation (TF) factors. The results
showed that LA efficiently accumulated Cd
and Zn. A different partitioning of HM
among plant tissues was observed, showing
the highest content in the aboveground mass
compared to that found in the root (except
for Zn). The TF ranged between 0.62 and
3.59, with values higher than unity for Cd
and Pb, revealing that this plant is a suitable
candidate for phytoextraction of these two
trace elements. According to the BCF
values, it seems that lavender is able to
bioaccumulate high amounts of Cd (6.66),
Pb (1.09), and Zn (2.87). Although more
research is necessary for conclusive results,
our findings confirm the ability of
Lavandula angustifolia Mill. to tolerate,
accumulate, and translocate high levels of
HMs from soil to the aerial parts of the plant
The Risk of Emerging of Dengue Fever in Romania, in the Context of Global Warming
Background: Few studies to date have assessed the influences induced by climate change on the spatial distribution and population abundance of Aedes albopictus using the latest climate scenarios. In this study, we updated the current distribution of Ae. albopictus mosquitoes and evaluated the changes in their distribution under future climate conditions, as well as the risk of dengue virus emergence in Romania. (2) Methods: Under the two scenarios: High scenario (HS) when no drastic measures to reduce the effects of global warming will be taken, or they are not effective and low scenario (LS) when very stringent greenhouse control measures will be implemented. (3) Results: The results estimate an increase in temperatures in Romania of up to 2.6 °C in HS and up to 0.4 °C in LS, with an increase in the period of virus replication within the vector from June to October in HS and from May to September in LS. Moreover, in 2022, Ae. albopictus was reported in a new county, where it was not identified at the last monitoring in 2020. (4) Conclusions: The rapid spread of this invasive species and the need to implement monitoring and control programs for the Aedes population in Romania are emphasized
Use of coconut husks to facilitate the removal of H2S from biogas
The study investigates the
potential of coconut husks in purifying
biogas, a common issue in the use of biogas
due to the high costs and environmental
impact of expensive purification
technologies. The study used an
experimental setup generating biogas from
kitchen waste and analysed its composition
using an industry-standard biogas analyser.
Coconut husks could remove hydrogen
sulphide (H2S), with a high percentage
removal efficiency of 54% at a column
length of 0.5 m from the inlet. Based on the
results, 2 kg of coconut husk could purify
837 L of biogas, with a removal efficiency of
approximately 62%, before exhaustion. This
suggests that coconut husks can be used in
biogas purification to remove H2S, which is
the most challenging component as it can
corrode metal parts when used at high
concentrations above 750 ppm. Further
research is needed on large-scale purification
using coconut husks at high pressure to allow
more gas adsorption by the purification media
Bioactive Compounds Extraction Using a Hybrid Ultrasound and High-Pressure Technology for Sustainable Farming Systems
In the context of agricultural soil degradation caused by the extensive use of chemical amendments, ecological alternatives with minimal detrimental impact on ecosystems are gaining popularity. Recent advancements in processing technologies have improved the quality and extraction efficiency of bioactive compounds, particularly when multiple conventional or innovative techniques are being used to potentially overcome the most common limitations. This paper proposes the development and testing of a hybrid technology design that employs two extraction techniques, namely ultrasound and high pressure, that can be used either separately or in tandem. An initial assessment of the prototype potential for isolating the desired compounds was made, by testing three various working regimens for the processing of a mixture of onion, pea, and soybean. By incorporating the bioactive compounds produced during the experimental phase in the seedling transplantation holes, we were able to test the potential of stimulating the development rate of vegetables and reducing the attack of pests. The extracts obtained using the hybrid technology showed positive results when used to reduce pest attacks (decreasing average attack frequency by 7%), however had negative effects when used to promote biostimulation, when acted as an inhibitor. The hybrid extraction approach improved the mass transfer into solvent by 14% when compared to high-pressure processing and by 7% when compared to sonication

Main soil parameters governing heavy metal adsorption and desorption processes
Heavy metals are distributed within soil profile according to their chemical state, transferred by hydrological flows and taken up by organisms through trophic pathways. Persistent pollutants include Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Ni, which cannot be removed or destroyed, leading to bioaccumulation. In soil, the maximum permissible limit for the European Union are 100 mg/kg Cu, 300 mg/kg Zn, 50 mg/kg Ni, 3 mg/kg Cd, 250 mg/kg Pb. Adsorption and desorption take place through the exchange of molecules and ions between the solid phase of heavy metals and the liquid phase of the soil, and are in accordance with the soil components: colloidal clay content, pH, organic matter, amount of carbonates and salts. The paper aim is to characterized two soil profiles up to 110 cm depth, collected from Agromixt Spineni Farm, Iasi which govern heavy metal adsorption and desorption process. The results present a neutral to alkaline (pH up to 8.81) soil pH, a carbonate content between 0.56% - 19.62% and salt content from 52-554 mg/100g soil. The results indicate that heavy metals are deposited and accumulated in the surface soil layers 0-30 cm depth. The solubility of carbonates and the presence of salts in high concentrations can retain copper (3.1 mg/Kg), nickel (1.5 mg/Kg) and lead (6.8 mg/Kg). The increased content of organic matter, weakly acidic or neutral pH values allow an increase in the mobility of zinc (15.5 mg/Kg) and cadmium. (1.0 mg/Kg). The accessibility of heavy metals can be reduced in alkaline media by desorption phenomenon, and their effect on the environment will be low and pose no risk to human health
Effect of different leonardite doses and cross-sowing methods on the growth and yield of red lentil
This study was carried out to
determine the effect of different crosssowing
methods and different doses of
leonardite on the growth of red lentils under
rain-fed conditions. Treatments consisted of
different cross-sowing methods (control, 45°
cross-sowing and 90° cross-sowing) and
different leonardite doses (0, 500, 1000,
1500, 2000 and 2500 kg ha−1). The trial was
carried out in Diyarbakır province in
Türkiye. The same rate of leonardite was
applied to the same plots for two consecutive
years to observe the two-year effect of
leonardite in the experiment, which was
established with four replications according
to the factorial experimental design in the
2018-2019 and 2019-2020 production
seasons. A positive effect of leonardite
application was observed on the number of
nodules and fresh root weight in the first
production season. The highest nodule number
(11.84) was obtained with 2500 kg ha−1 and
the highest fresh root weight (0.24, 0.25 and
0.24 g) was obtained at 500, 1000 and 1500
kg ha−1 doses, respectively. The highest plant
height, number of main branches, and
number of pod parameters were obtained at a
dose of 1500 kg ha−1 in the second
production season (36.63 cm, 3.95 and
17.43, respectively). The highest grain yield
(889.5 kg ha−1), dry root weight (0.125 g)
and number of nodules (50.01) were
obtained at a dose of 1000 kg ha−1 in the
second production season. It was determined
that different sowing methods did not affect
grain yield in either production season
