    Logistics and the Circular Economy

    No full text
There is a strong interconnection between logistics and the circular economy, with emphasises on how the two are intertwined in the quest for efficient resource management and sustainability. The circular economy proposes replacing the traditional linear model, prioritizing the reduction, reuse, recovery and recycling of materials and products. Logistics plays a critical role in waste management, material recovery, sustainable design, energy efficiency and resource sharing. Thus, logistics is fundamental to the effective functioning of the circular economy, and digitalisation is an essential way of making logistics more efficient in the circular economy; and overcoming the challenges such as the lack of coordination in the supply chain need to be overcome. Logistics is an essential part of the successful transition to the circular economy, making business processes more sustainable and environmentally friendly

Does managerial overconfidence affect capital structure rebalancing for entrepreneurial firms?

    No full text
Purpose The behavioural theory adds a new paradigm of analysis with the assumptions of the decision maker’s cognitive biases and their repercussions on financing decisions. The aim of the study is to analyse the repercussions of these biases on the adjustment speed of firm’s capital structure toward the optimal level. Design/methodology/approach Based on a partial adjustment model, the study uses the Dynamic Panel Fractional estimator to analyse panel data from 4,990 Portuguese entrepreneurial firms. Findings The results show that the cognitive overconfidence bias impacts the entrepreneurial firm’s capital structure. In fact, the firms run by overconfident managers adjust more slowly than their counterparts. Furthermore, the findings suggest that entrepreneurial firms make relatively fast adjustments toward the optimal debt level and follow a hierarchical financing order in the funding process. Practical implications The results of this paper are not only interesting to the academia, but also contain practical implications for corporate, institutional and business policy and governance. First, the paper introduces a new measure of cognitive bias in optimistic managers, which is useful for current and future academic research. Also, in practical terms, the findings of the paper reveal that when a company is contemplating hiring a manager, it should consider whether they need an optimistic or non-optimistic manager based on the company's present life cycle or situation. Originality/value The current analysis extends the existing literature. The study suggests that financial classical and behavioural paradigms should not be separated, which can provide evidence to help narrow the gap between these two major perspectives

    No full text
The present study aims to define and report on the implementation of new pedagogical practices in the curricular unit of Constitutional Law with the aim of promoting student-centered teaching. The pedagogical practices adopted were designed to foster an active and participatory learning environment. Additionally, they were chosen while taking into account the “gamification” strategy using elements of games outside the sphere of gaming which can be applied as a teaching strategy. In undergraduate studies, the application of the active learning strategy in the classroom presents a significant challenge for education in its traditional sense. Specifically in the case of studying law, the following techniques were used: oral test simulation, written test simulation with peer assessment, “cube with review questions”, and walking gallery

The relationship between managers’ emotional intelligence and project management decisions

    Get PDF
Today, effective project management goes beyond technical skills, incorporating an emotional dimension that plays a crucial role in the success and dynamics of teams. Emotional intelligence (EI), which refers to the ability to control emotions—both one’s own and those of others—has become essential for good performance in work environments, often surpassing technical skills. This study aims to explore the relationship between managers’ emotional intelligence and decision-making in the context of project management. This research was based on an extensive literature review, followed by multiple interviews with project managers. Using semi-structured interviews, it was possible to identify how EI positively influences decision-making and project success. Managers with high levels of EI are more effective in decision-making, communication, conflict resolution, and leadership, resulting in more cohesive and productive teams. EI is a critical factor for success in project management in companies with the same characteristics as this one, providing a collaborative and effective working environment. The results might clearly assess the current state of the relationship between EI in the context of project management and consequent decisions leading to the project’s success

The role of social media in the conservation and safeguard of gastronomy as intangible cultural heritage

    No full text
Since 2003, when UNESCO launched the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and gastronomy was included in the World Heritage List as ICH in 2016, the importance of this topic has increased. However, globalization and the mixing of different cultures means that gastronomy as a heritage and related cultural traditions may be lost, requiring urgent action toward its preservation. Nowadays, social media platforms and their importance in today’s society in various fields can be a useful tool in protecting intangible cultural heritage through its dissemination. This study was carried out in the framework of the EURICA project aimed at preserving ritual cuisine as a manifestation of heritage and folklore, making it easily accessible and usable through digitising ritual recipes. In this context, this study aims to identify and analyze already existing international platforms and networks related to gastronomy as cultural heritage, as well as the presence of these platforms in social media. As a result, three international platforms related to the theme of gastronomy as heritage were found and analyzed in terms of their amplitude and spread in social media. It has been found that many countries in different parts of the world have, relatively recently, shown a trend toward preserving their cuisine as a cultural heritage

Empowering student data privacy in schools through open educational resources

    No full text
In the modern era of digital education, educational institutions are increasingly adopting cloud-based third-party software, which introduces unique challenges and concerns related to the privacy and security of student data. The SPADATAS initiative is dedicated to promoting the responsible use of digital tools and improving data security within educational data management. Its primary objective is to address concerns surrounding data privacy and security in educational settings, particularly in the context of academic data handling. To raise awareness and enhance data protection in educational institutions, an exhaustive search was conducted to identify online and open resources. Out of a total of 178 resources examined, 146 were meticulously selected following a rigorous evaluation process that involved the exclusion of resources that did not align adequately with the project's objectives and standards. This document offers an overview of the methodology employed to identify these resources and presents a comprehensive mapping of the outcomes. Given the vast landscape of available resources for educational institutions, careful evaluation is indispensable in identifying the most effective resources for strengthening data protection measures

Nexus between triple bottom line and economic development: an exploratory analysis of economic, environmental and social dimensions

    Get PDF
Recent global events, such as Covid-19 and the conflict in Ukraine, have disrupted the notion of a sustainable society, resulting in apprehension and economic uncertainty. These multifaceted crises have caused increased unemployment rates and heightened poverty levels, further enhancing existing concerns regarding societal welfare. Consequently, sustainability has gained significant prominence, compelling enterprises to adopt sustainable practices to maintain competitiveness. The triple bottom line framework has risen in importance as an indispensable tool for holistically addressing sustainability concerns. It places equal emphasis on the economic, environmental, and social dimensions, presenting a comprehensive approach that fosters sustainability, resilience, and innovation. It acknowledges the intrinsic connection between companies’ achievements and society’s overall well-being, while strengthening companies competitive positioning. The general objective of this thesis is to understand the influence that triple bottom line, and that each of its dimensions, economic, environmental and social, can exert on economic development. Establishing business strategies that will enable companies to achieve greater positive outcomes, while contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. A profound understanding of these relations is imperative for ensuring enduring success in an ever-evolving global landscape. In order to achieve the proposed objective, a typology of mixed research, as outlined in Chapters 2 to 6, was employed. The research encompasses the deductive process and five studies that employ the following methodology: 1) bibliometric study; 2), 3) and 5) multiple linear regression models; and 4) meta-regression. Examining the results obtained, it has been established that the triple bottom line acts as an effective partner in the pursuit of boosting economic development, as well as contributing to the enhancement of sustainable outcomes. The three dimensions of the framework are geared towards achieving a unified goal, thereby enhancing firms’ performance. Theoretical frameworks that extend beyond the confines of economic sustainability, embracing the broader facets of environmental preservation and social well-being, are presented. Moreover, the research bridges the gap between theoretical constructs and practical application. Practical insights for both corporate entities and governmental bodies are provided to facilitate the translation of theoretical insights into concrete strategies. In summary, this thesis highlights the growing significance of sustainability in the contemporary business landscape, while it is focused on advancing theoretical understanding, practical application, and the scientific foundations of triple bottom line within the realm of the economic development.
