Illness Stigma and Shame in People With Chronic Illnesses vs. SARS-CoV-2 Survivors: Associations With Psychological Distress Through Psychological Flexibility and Self-Compassion

    No full text
Individuals with chronic illnesses and those infected with SARS-CoV-2 often face stigma, shame, and psychological distress related to their conditions. Higher psychological flexibility and self-compassion are often associated with less stigma and shame. Examining and comparing these experiences between people with chronic illness and people who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 can provide valuable insights into the shared and unique challenges they encounter. This study aimed to compare these two groups, and used structural equation modelling to investigate the links between stigma, shame, and psychological distress, with a focus on the mediating roles of psychological flexibility and self-compassion in these associations. The study included 270 Portuguese participants (chronic illness: n = 104; SARS-CoV-2: n = 166), with an average age of 36.73 years and 86.6% of the sample being women. Results showed that the chronic illness subgroup reported higher levels of illness stigma, anxiety, and depression, compared to the SARS-CoV-2 subgroup. Findings from the mediation analysis, revealed that the model fit exceptionally well, accounting for 48% of the variance in anxiety and 45% in depression symptoms across the entire sample. Most parameters were consistent between the two subgroups, except for the association between self-compassion and depression symptoms, which was only statistically significant in the chronic illness subgroup. In this group, both psychological flexibility and self-compassion mediated the association between stigma and shame with symptoms of anxiety and depression. In the SARS-CoV-2 subgroup, these processes mediated the association with anxiety, whereas psychological flexibility only mediated depression symptoms. The findings from this study provide directions for future research on the possible development or refinement of personalized psychological interventions targeting emotional distress in adults with chronic illnesses and viral disease recovery cohorts

Background: Pain is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms among cancer patients, significantly impacting their quality of life. Effective management of cancer pain is challenging due to its varying intensity and characteristics, making it a public health priority. Recently, neuromodulation techniques, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), have been increasingly studied as innovative approaches for chronic pain treatment, including in cancer contexts. This study aimed to systematically review the evidence on the effectiveness of these techniques in managing cancer-related pain. Materials and Methods: The review was conducted using the databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, and CENTRAL, including eight randomized controlled trials. The PRISMA guidelines were followed, and quality assessment was carried out using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) assessment checklist. Results: A total of 8 articles involving 349 patients were included in the study, with three studies utilizing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and five employing Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS). All studies targeted the primary motor cortex. The majority of the studies focused on patients with breast and lung cancer. In this context, both techniques were identified as promising alternatives for pain reduction, demonstrating short-term efficacy. However, multiple sessions were found to be necessary to achieve significant improvements with both approaches. Conclusion: Multicentric studies are needed to further explore the impact of these interventions over longer follow-up periods to determine their long-term efficacy. Future research is crucial to establish the role of these emerging techniques in managing cancer pain safely and effectively

AI’s invisible touch: how effortless browsing shapes customer perception, experience and engagement in online retail

    Get PDF
This study explores the influence of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled ease of use on customer perception, experience, and engagement in online retail stores. Through a quantitative analysis of 1438 responses from Portuguese consumers, the research reveals that AI-enabled ease of use positively influences customers’ perceived control, concentration, and cognitive enjoyment while browsing online stores. These perceptions, in turn, contribute to the elicitation of awe, which is found to be a crucial mediating factor in the relationship between customer perceptions and purchase intention. The study highlights the significant role of awe in strengthening the link between customer perceptions and purchase intent, rendering previously non-significant direct effects statistically significant. The findings offer valuable implications for online retailers seeking to leverage AI technologies to enhance customer experiences and drive sales. By prioritizing ease of use, cognitive enjoyment, and perceived control, and strategically leveraging the mediating role of awe, retailers can create engaging and memorable online shopping experiences that ultimately translate to increased customer satisfaction and purchase intention

Exploring the relationship between innovation, entry modes and destination countries

In a world characterized by globalization, where the internationalization of businesses is pivotal for their prosperity, innovation is emerging as a pivotal strategic choice influencing their growth and competitive edge. Despite the broad consensus on the growing importance of internationalization and innovation, some questions arise about the relationship of innovation with entry modes with less commitment to the market and with destination markets with less risks. In order to determine whether there is a pattern of relationship between internationalization modes, destination markets, and innovation for Portuguese firms, the objective is to study this possibility. To achieve this goal, we carried out an online questionnaire survey to collect data. The questionnaire was carefully designed based on a literature review and included various variables related to the internationalization of firms. It was sent to all 8183 firms listed in the AICEP database of Portuguese internationalized firms through Google Forms tool. The data was collected over an 8-month period, starting in May 2019. To analyze the data, we used IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0 software, applying a quantitative approach. We employed Quantitative Analysis Methodologies: Univariate and Multivariate Exploratory Factorial Analysis (EFA), Correlation analysis and the nonparametric tests Chi-square and Mann-Whitney. Based on the findings, the empirical evidence clearly demonstrates that firms employing internationalization modes demanding higher commitment, along with those targeting geographically and psychologically distant markets, place significantly greater emphasis on innovation as a pivotal factor driving their international expansion

From risk to reward: Understanding the influence of Generation Z and personality factors on sustainable entrepreneurial behaviour

    Get PDF
Entrepreneurial intent has transformed over the last few decades to respond to current environmental, societal and economic challenges. An essential role in this transformation has been bequeathed to Generation Z. This study aims to evaluate the influence of Generation Z personality traits measured by internal locus control, perceived creativity (PC), proactive personality (PP) and sustainable perceived behavioural control (SPBC) on sustainable entrepreneurial intention (SEI) when mediated by Generation Z’s perception of risk. The sample for this study was collected through a data collection instrument in which 505 young people from Portuguese Generation Z participated. A quantitative methodology was applied through the Partial Least Square method. The results show that the personality traits, PC, PP and sustainable perceived control behaviour of Generation Z positively influence their risk perception (RP) and SEI. In turn, RP positively influences the SEI of these young people. No statistically significant relationship was found between the internal locus control of Generation Z youth and RP or SEI. This study is key to expanding identity theory to the context of sustainable entrepreneurship among Generation Z youth, highlighting how RP shapes their entrepreneurial practices. By contributing to the still scarce literature on generational cohorts in the field of entrepreneurial activity, the study offers a valuable empirical analysis of the relationship between personality traits and entrepreneurial intention. In addition, it deepens understanding of the emerging concept of sustainable entrepreneurship, providing important insights for promoting environmentally responsible business practices among younger generations
