    Get PDF

Digital Financial Knowledge Scale (DFKS): Insights from a developing Economy

    Get PDF
This work aims to create and validate the digital financial knowledge scale (DFKS). Three studies were carried out, including a focus group, expert validation, pre-testing, and the application of item response theory. From these procedures, two versions of the scale were constructed and validated. An evaluation and classification methodology was proposed. Two versions for measuring digital financial knowledge are presented. The long version is composed of 40 items and the short version has 26 items. Applying the proposed methodology, it is possible to classify the level of digital financial knowledge as low, intermediate, or high. The DFKS can be useful for both financial system agents and governments and researchers, who can use it in different contexts. In the banking sector, identifying the level of digital financial knowledge can reduce risks, as losses suffered by clients due to an uninformed adoption of digital banking services break the relationship of trust and can lead to lower financial inclusion

Determinants of corporate indebtedness in Portugal: An analysis of financial behaviour clusters

    Get PDF
Corporate indebtedness is a powerful tool in determining a company’s financial health with impacts on its image and reputation. The main objective of this research is to study the determining factors in corporate indebtedness in Portugal. It also has the secondary objectives of creating clusters of companies’ behaviour in relation to the use of credit and verifying their differences in relation to the characteristics of the companies. It uses a quantitative methodology based on a questionnaire survey of 1957 Portuguese companies. The results of the factor analysis show the formation of six determining factors in corporate indebtedness, namely the negotiating relationship with banks, financing, cycle and indebtedness, company operating performance, guarantees used to obtain bank financing and financing risk analysis as well as secondary forms of bank financing. The application of cluster analysis to the six factors formed led to the classification of companies into three clusters: the resilient financial cluster, the operational excellence cluster and the strategic financial cluster. There are several statistically significant differences in the corporate financing factors in relation to the clusters to which they belong. The evidence of the factors and clusters explaining company financing provides insights for improving credit access practices and for implementing public policies that facilitate access to credit and promote economic development

This project reports on a case study that aims to prove the importance and contribution that innovation has for marketing and, consequently, for business performance. The case analyzed is the launch of an innovative product range for the Casal Garcia brand, the largest Portuguese white wine brand, market leader and the most exported Portuguese white wine brand. In a sector as traditional as the wine industry, it has created value through innovation and the launch of an innovative product line: Casal Garcia Fruitzy. "Casal Garcia Fruitzy is an aromatized wine-based drink, low in alcohol and with a pleasant fruity taste. It is the perfect combination of a wine with a slightly crisp profile and the tasty, pleasant character of fruit." (Casal Garcia, 2023). Firstly, the main drivers and barriers to innovation were identified. Next, innovation in the wine sector and the main emerging modes of product innovation were analyzed. Next, a market and consumer study were carried out within the category of wines and alcoholic beverages, as well as the national wine market and its evolution over the last five years, as well as a survey of data on the profile of the modern wine and alcoholic beverage consumer. Once this analysis had been carried out and based on the insights resulting from it, the Casal Garcia Fruitzy case study was demonstrated, its strategy and stages of innovation and product development, feasibility testing and product launch onto the market. Finally, the contribution of this innovation was verified and evaluated through its financial performance and the value it brought to the brand. The conclusion is that innovation is fundamental to designing a good marketing strategy and improving corporate financial performance

O impacto do Brexit no direito e política de asilo do Reino Unido

    Get PDF
The United Kingdom ceased its EU membership on December 31, 2020, impacting its asylum law and policy. Pre-Brexit, the UK collaborated closely with EU Member States under frameworks like the Dublin Regulation. Despite the extensive discussions on border controls and the refugee crisis surrounding the referendum campaign, post-Brexit agreements lack asylum-related provisions. Although the UK continues to be bound by international refugee law, being a signatory to the 1951 Geneva Convention and its Additional Protocol signed in 1967, the UK's standard of protection and guarantees of refugees’ rights has been severely affected without CJEU jurisdiction and CFR influence. Bilateral cooperation faces challenges stemming from a lack of reciprocity and trust, particularly straining the reaching of return agreements. The UK is under pressure due to its “legacy backlog” of applications and continued influx of asylum seekers arriving in small boats from Calais. The British government plans to address these issues through externalisation, by setting up offshore processing centres. This thesis uses a qualitative method, examining official documents, laws, and articles in order to assess Brexit's legal, domestic, and international impact on asylum law and policies. The core hypothesis being tested is whether leaving the EU, as the British government claimed, resulted in an improvement of asylum application management and a reduction in arrivals of asylum seekers

Pulse vaccination in a SIR model: Global dynamics, bifurcations and seasonality

    No full text
We analyze a periodically-forced dynamical system inspired by the SIR model with impulsive vaccination. We fully characterize its dynamics according to the proportion of vaccinated individuals and the time between doses. If the basic reproduction number is less than 1 (i.e ), then we obtain precise conditions for the existence and global stability of a disease-free -periodic solution. Otherwise, if , then a globally stable -periodic solution emerges with positive coordinates. We draw a bifurcation diagram and we describe the associated bifurcations. We also find analytically and numerically chaotic dynamics by adding seasonality to the disease transmission rate. In a realistic context, low vaccination coverage and intense seasonality may result in unpredictable dynamics. Previous experiments have suggested chaos in periodically-forced biological impulsive models, but no analytic proof has been given

The Festivity in Honour of Our Lady of Antime in Fafe: An emerging tourist resource?

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to analyse the motivations of the participants of the festivity in honour of Our Lady of Antime in Fafe (located in the north of Portugal) and provide an overview of the tourism opportunities and impacts associated with the event. To this end, the study analysed the main events on the programme for the 2024 edition of this religious festivity. According to the interviews and participant observations, the impact of the religious festivity in honour of Our Lady of Antime on the faithful who participated was evident. For this study, semi-structured face-to-face interviews and participant observations were conducted, and the former were recorded for subsequent content analysis and categorisation. Participant observation was conducted, focusing on the events that occurred during the religious festivity in honour of the Lady of Antime. The limitations of this study relate to the fact that this is a resource that has not yet been explored as a lever for religious tourism in the municipality, although it has received more media attention in recent years. After carrying out this study, it was possible to conclude that the religious festivity in honour of Our Lady of Antime is attracting more and more believers, and that this event has become a resource that is complementary to the basic tourist resources of the destination of Fafe
