“Free spirits”: A mixed methods evaluation of an artistic intervention program targeting imprisoned people

    No full text
Research is still needed to promote the development of structured art-based programs in prisons to strengthen socio-emotional skills. “Free Spirits” emerges as an innovative intervention that involves artistic and participatory co-creation dynamics in theater and music. A mixed-method quasi-experimental study was conducted in a Portuguese prison. Using self-report measures (emotional regulation, resilient coping) and a Go/No-Go paradigm (inhibitory control), quantitative data were collected pre- and posttest. A focus group was used to obtain participant’s perceptions. The results suggested the effectiveness of the intervention in promoting more adaptive emotional management strategies and in the improvement of inhibitory control

Promoting teachers’ wellbeing using a compassionate mind training intervention: Exploring mechanisms of change

    No full text
Objectives The current study aimed to examine the mechanisms of change of a compassionate mind training intervention for teachers (CMT-T). In particular, we examined whether changes in the three flows of compassion, fears of compassion, and emotions at work (safe, drive, and threat) mediated the effects of the CMT-T in burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress, and in overall positive affect. Methods As part of a two-arm randomized controlled trial and a stepped-wedge design, the study included all participants who completed the 8-week CMT-T intervention either at Time 1 or at Time 2 (n = 103). At pre- and post-intervention, participants completed measures of compassion, fears of compassion, emotional climate in the workplace, burnout, psychopathological symptoms, and positive affect.~ Results Mediation analyses revealed that increases in the flows of compassion and reductions in fears of compassion from others mediated the effects of CMT-T on teachers' depression, anxiety, stress, and burnout levels. In the case of the reduction in stress symptoms from pre- to post-intervention, compassion for self, fears of self-compassion, and fears of receiving compassion from others emerged as significant mediators of this change. The three flows of compassion and fears of compassion (for self and from others) were significant mediators of the impact of CMT-T on changes in teachers’ anxiety levels from baseline to post-intervention. A decrease in fears of compassion from others and an increase in drive emotions mediated changes in depressive symptoms following CMT-T. Concerning burnout, all flows of compassion and fear of compassion from others mediated the changes from baseline to post-intervention. Changes in positive affect following CMT-T were mediated by increases in the flows of compassion, and emotions related to soothing-safeness and drive systems in the workplace. Serial mediational models showed that the effect of CMT-T on teachers’ burnout was partially mediated by reductions in fears of compassion (for self and from others) and stress. Conclusions CMT-T effectively improves teachers’ wellbeing and reduces burnout and psychological distress through the cultivation of their ability to experience, direct, and be open to compassion, and the strengthening of the soothing-safeness and the drive systems in the school context. Preregistration The study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov: identifier, NCT05107323; Compassionate Schools: Feasibility and Effectiveness Study of a Compassionate Mind Training Program to Promote Teachers Wellbein

A bibliometric study about the Rural Creative Class: Proposal of a conceptual framework and future agenda

    Get PDF
This study aims to carry out scientific and bibliometric mapping of the rural creative class. It analyses 57 articles retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database and resorts to bibliographic coupling using VOSviewer software to identify the main lines of research on this theme, before advancing new topics for future research. The results identify and classify the prevailing theoretical foci in this domain as follows: (i) Florida’s theory and rural areas; and (ii) Urban growth and the creative class. The main contribution of this study lies in showing the need to understand the effective operationalization of Florida’s model in rural areas, as a way to raise their sustained economic growth. In addition, network theory is necessary if used to explain the bridge between rural creativity and the place’s social capital. A conceptual framework is proposed for the development of rural or sparsely populated areas, presenting the challenge of its application by political decision-makers, as well as trend topics for a future agenda

Measurement invariance across countries of the Test of Memory Strategies (TMS): A contribution to the cross-national validity study

    Get PDF
Previous literature showed a complex interpretation of recall tasks due to the complex relationship between Executive Functions (EF) and Long Term Memory (M). The Test of Memory Strategies (TMS) could be useful for assessing this issue, because it evaluates EF and M simultaneously. This study aims to explore the validity of the TMS structure, comparing the models proposed by Vaccaro et al. (2022) and evaluating the measurement invariance according to three countries (Italy, Spain, and Portugal) through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Four hundred thirty-one healthy subjects (Age mean = 54.84, sd = 20.43; Education mean = 8.85, sd =4.05; M = 177, F = 259) were recruited in three countries (Italy, Spain, and Portugal). Measurement invariance across three country groups was evaluated through Structural Equation modeling. Also, convergent and divergent validity were examined through the correlation between TMS and classical neuropsychological tests. CFA outcomes suggested that the best model was the three-dimensional model, in which list 1 and list2 reflect EF, list 3 reflects a mixed factor of EF and M (EFM) and list4 and list5 reflect M. This result is in line with the theory that TMS decreases EF components progressively. TMS was metric invariant to the country, but scalar invariance was not tenable. Finally, the factor scores of TMS showed convergent validity with the classical neuropsychological tests. The overall results support cross-validation of TMS in the three countries considered

Impact of climate investment policies on citizens’ perception of pollution damage in the European Union

    No full text
This study examines the impact of climate investment policies on citizens’ perception of pollution damage in the European Union, while controlling for various environmental indicators. The primary panel data estimation outcome indicates that, despite substantial public expenditure on climate action, consumers’ perception of pollution improvement remains unchanged or even worsens. This suggests support for the policy ineffectiveness hypothesis. In view of this result, advocating for strengthened policies aimed at bolstering climate action in the European Union may be considered a non-credible threat from a microeconomics standpoint

Emigration and changes in lifestyles since the second half of the last century have led to the decline of rural areas. Currently in these territories, valorization strategies that take advantage of its heritage are being deployed, relying on rural tourism as a dynamic economic activity that improves living conditions. In the case of protected natural areas, given their fragility and environmental value that condition industrial and primary activity, the enhancement of historical and natural heritage becomes one of the only alternatives for progress. This is the case of the Caldo river valley, in Lobios, located in the Baixa Limia- Serra do Xurés Natural Park and in the Trasfronteiriza Gerês- Xurés Biosphere Reserve, forming a territorial and environmental unit with the Portuguese Peneda-Gerês National Park. The degradation and abandonment of the Spanish territory contrasts with the care, conservation and development of other territories with the same characteristics. With the objective of defining an urban planning project for the valorization of the rural heritage of the Río Caldo valley, a research was developed that allowed to determine strategies for the valorization of the rural heritage in protected natural spaces that could be applied. In terms of research methods, a literature review was performed to base the problem and define what rural heritage and protected natural areas are. Moreover, the role of tourism, the principles of intervention in the valorization projects as well as the associated regulations, were analyzed. Subsequently, through literature analysis, observation, photography and field notes, the territory was described in all its aspects and the current situation was analyzed. Finally, by means of the case study technique, 26 examples of interventions were compared, of which 8 were studied in depth according to the established analytical categories, in view of their suitability for the case in question. Once the main project guidelines for the enhancement of rural heritage in protected natural areas and the needs of the territory in question had been concluded, an urban planning project was developed in order to respond to them. Thus, an intervention will be proposed to reach the four main tourist points of the Caldo river valley, giving dignity and accessibility to the public space, maintaining the identity and creating an integrating strategy that channels the flow of visitors and improves the quality of life of the local community
