Geographical Information Systems [entrada em enciclopédia]

    No full text
Geographical information systems (GIS) are tools that can represent, store, manage, analyze, update, and visualize spatial and regular data in an integrated environment. These tools operate on two data elements (Bahaire and Elliott-White 1999): geographical or spatial data (locational aspects) and attribute data (statistical and non-locational data associated with a spatial entity)

Exploring the Algarve as a health Tourism Destination: Insights from stakeholders [abstract]

    No full text
Proposal and Originality: Health tourism has emerged as a valuable market due to its economic contribution to travel destinations (Ferreira & Castro, 2020; Fetscherin & Stephano, 2016). The aim of this study is to assess the potential of health tourism in Algarve from the perspective of stakeholders, highlighting the main constraints and opportunities for development. The growth of this niche market lies in its potential to stimulate investment in associated sectors of health infrastructure and tourist facilities, increasing the flow of medical tourists (Barreira & Cesário, 2018; Fisher & Sood, 2014). Methodology: A qualitative methodology was based on 17 semi-structured interviews, collected among local stakeholders of the H&W sector as marketing executives, travel agents, hospitality and spa personnel. Content analysis technique was used for data treatment. The data relate to both the use of the SWOT technique as a research method and an evaluation concerning the tourism potential of the Algarve region of Portugal. Results and Implications: By exploring both the internal resources of the Algarve and the external factors affecting the region, the study identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) related to the development of health tourism. These insights are critical for supporting strategic decision-making processes and enhancing destination planning in Algarve region. The findings also offer contributions for policymakers to understand the factors influencing the success of the health tourism sector in the region, providing a framework for health tourism planning and development. Research Limitations: Research limitations are related to sample size, so the focus on regional stakeholders may limit the findings generalization to other national or international destinations

From a multichannel to an optichannel strategy in retail

This paper presents the first systematic literature review (SLR) that includes the concept of an optichannel strategy, examining the main principles, key characteristics, and implications for retailers when switching from a multichannel to an optichannel approach. The SLR was made using Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar to find literature on the optichannel model in retail. The results show a paradigm shift in retailing from a multichannel, passing through omnichannel and phygital, to an optichannel strategy. This shift means marketers are now adopting a more customer-centric approach to brand management and consumer behaviour. This article has practical and managerial implications for researchers and practitioners. For researchers, the study explains how retailers evolved from multi- to cross-, omni-, phygital, and optichannel strategies. For practitioners, this paper indicates future ways to allow retailers to manage their customers’ needs, ensuring a positive impact on customer experience and the company’s commercial and financial performance

No full text
Ageism, defined as prejudice or discrimination based on age, can be experienced both negatively and positively, influencing emotional health and life satisfaction in different ways. In this context, the main objective of the present study was to explore the relationship between perceived ageism and subjective well-being in older adults, analyzing the differences between genders and age groups, as well as the impact of the positive and negative dimensions of ageism. The sample included 340 participants, aged between 55 and 91, recruited through an online questionnaire. The Perceived Ageism Questionnaire (PAQ), the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS-VRP) and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (ESCV) were used. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests for independent samples and multiple regression analyses. The results showed that participants aged 65 and over registered higher levels of negative ageism compared to the 55-64 age group, while in positive ageism there were no differences between the two groups. Regarding well-being, older participants reported more negative and less positive emotions. Regression analyses revealed that negative ageism negatively affects well-being, while positive ageism is associated with higher levels of positive emotions and life satisfaction. This study underlines the complexity of ageism and its impact on well-being, highlighting the importance of promoting more positive attitudes and perceptions about ageing
