Transgender Rights in African Confinement: An analysis of recent jurisprudence in Southern Africa
Recent decisions in the courts of Zimbabwe and South Africa have brought awareness of the challenges faced by trans persons in custodial settings in the region. Through the juridical examination of court cases, this chapter analyses the experiences of two trans women who had their human rights violated while detained and sought reparation through the juridical system. Their judicial victories demonstrate how although Zimbabwean and South African state and society may have very different approaches towards transgender persons, their judicial systems converge in recognising the violence trans persons face in custodial settings. Although Zimbabwe’s legal framework excludes trans persons, in a ground-breaking judgement its High Court ruled that Rikki Nathanson had the right to reparation for the cruel and degrading treatment she was subjected to while detained by police forces. In South Africa, where the legal system respects the human rights of gender minorities, the court found that Jade September’s incarceration in a prison for men constituted unfair discrimination. By dissecting these rulings, the chapter offers a glimpse of the specific challenges trans persons face while in confinement in these states and explores the contribution of both instances of case law to trans people’s rights in custodial settings in Southern Africa

The new era of Artificial Intelligence in consumption: Theoretical framing, review and research agenda
Artificial Intelligence possesses the capacity to reshape brand-consumer dynamics by leveraging its capability to analyze extensive datasets, discern patterns, and customize experiences for individual consumers. This capacity is enabled by a spectrum of features embedded within AI systems, which undergo challenging, continuous, and rapid evolution to accommodate shifts in consumer preferences and behaviors. This paper aims to study the influence of artificial intelligence on consumer behavior. To address this objective, a bibliometric analysis was performed on a dataset comprising 561 publications sourced from two prominent databases, namely the Web of Science and Scopus. Findings reveal that AI influence extends across diverse sectors, as consumers display a preference for AI-driven solutions, attracted by their perceived objectivity and personalized interactions. Additionally, AI-powered tools like chatbots and virtual assistants enhance the quality of customer service and promote heightened engagement. Future research pathways, with themes classified into niche, motor, and basic categories, were outlined. This study pioneers its approach by harnessing resources of two comprehensive databases, enabling a meticulous tracking of publication evolution to discern temporal trends in the literature. In addition, a conceptual model was proposed that advocates the influence of AI on consumer behavior in three dimensions: influence across industries, addressing consumer needs in the age of AI, and optimizing consumer experience through AI-powered solutions. The paper underscores the transformative potential of AI in molding consumer behavior and emphasizes the necessity for businesses to adapt to this evolving landscape
The Drum n’ Bass Music Scene in Porto [comunicação oral]
The drum ‘n’ bass music scene in Porto emerged at the height of the English scene in the 1990s, with the music initially being introduced by music shops and small labels. The cradle of the scene in Porto was Ribeira with its promoters and ‘nightlife entrepreneurs’ who pioneered the programming of the new style. The scene expanded in the 2000s with the arrival of major events and participation in the European Capital of Culture Porto 2001, which helped establish drum ‘n’ bass on the city's music scene. This paper explores the framework of the drum'n'bass music scene in Porto within the characteristics of music scenes: spatiality, regularity, ephemerality, mortality, volatility, collectivization, theatricality, transgression, spectacle, interrelationship and commodification, as well as identifying the major stimuli for the emergence of the scene and its protagonists (spaces, actors and venues), forming a chronological narrative of the drum'n'bass scene in Porto
Exploring sustainable tourism research trends: A literature review of the last decade
Sustainable tourism has emerged as a critical focus in contemporary discussions surrounding environmental conservation and social responsibility. As global tourism continues to expand, the need for sustainable practices becomes increasingly urgent to mitigate adverse impacts on natural ecosystems and support local communities. This article presents a systematic literature review dedicated to exploring the key research trends in sustainable tourism from 2015 to 2024. The review aims to synthesize existing knowledge and highlight the importance of sustainability in the tourism sector. Data for this review was collected from the Scopus database, utilizing the keywords "sustain* tourism". This search yielded a total of 620 articles, reflecting a robust body of research in this vital area. A thematic evolution analysis was subsequently conducted to map the most prominent research areas and uncover existing gaps and opportunities for future inquiry. By focusing on the evolution of themes within the field, this study provides insights into both current and emerging topics relevant to sustainable tourism. Findings show that, the themes in sustainable tourism research have shown both divergence and convergence over time. From 2015–2019, "sustainable tourism" split into "sustainable tourism," "governance," and "development" by 2020–2022, with the latter two peaking during this period. Simultaneously, topics like "community participation," "place attachment," and others converged into "sustainable tourism." By 2023–2024, research trends displayed greater specificity. The findings from this literature review are importance to various stakeholders, including academics, policymakers, businesses, and governmental agencies. By offering a thorough perspective on sustainable tourism research, the review aims to facilitate informed decision-making processes and foster the development of more effective strategies that address sustainability challenges within the tourism industry. Furthermore, this article serves as a vital resource for guiding future research endeavours and practical applications aimed at resolving the complex issues associated with sustainability in tourism. Ultimately, the emphasis on sustainable tourism practices not only contributes to the conservation of natural and cultural resources but also ensures the well-being of local communities and the overall health of tourist destinations. By fostering collaborative efforts, this review underscores the importance of integrating sustainability into the core of tourism development strategies for a more equitable and sustainable future
Photure: Educational Handbook
Deciding when and why to employ photogrammetry in architectural surveying depends on the specific objectives of the project, the available resources, and the expertise of the surveyors involved. This handbook aims to assist in such decision-making by providing practical guidance. In practice, photogrammetry is most effective when used in combination with classical surveying techniques, either as a preliminary data-capturing phase or as part of a hybrid approach to create a comprehensive and detailed representation of a building
As Mulheres no desenvolvimento: Uma reflexão a partir do World Survey on the Role of Women In Development 2024 [comunicação oral]
Digital Transformation, E-Commerce, and Branding: A qualitative study on the unique relationship between brand equity and consumer engagement in the Portuguese Fashion Market
The fashion industry is at a crossroads, with the rise of E-Commerce and the increasing consumer demand for sustainability reshaping the market. As digital technologies evolve, a brand that fails to monitor market tendencies and adapt to the online market’s growing acceptance and use may risk losing competitiveness. The problem is no longer how companies engage with consumers; it is also related to their capacity to accept the importance of brand equity. The value of a brand increasingly depends on its ability to act transparently, and sustainability is nowadays a key factor that impacts brand perception, especially among young individuals. This study, which analyzes the relationship between branding, sustainability, and digital transformation in the Portuguese fashion market, strongly emphasizes the crucial role of consumer engagement. It examines how managers know consumers’ expectations of ethical practices and which good practices are being adopted to reshape the textile industry’s future
