    No full text
Growing research on the influence of biological rhythms in daily life has highlighted the role of chronotype in interpersonal dynamics. However, the mechanisms linking this individual predisposition to the quality of intimate relationships remain underexplored. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the serial mediating role of marital satisfaction and intimacy in the relationship between chronotype (morningnesseveningness) and sexual satisfaction. The sample consisted of 121 individuals in marital relationships, who completed a set of self-report questionnaires. To test the theoretical model, a path analysis was conducted using the PROCESS macro for SPSS (Model 6). The results confirmed the serial mediation model. The analysis revealed a significant indirect effect, demonstrating that a greater morningness propensity is associated with higher marital satisfaction, which in turn predicts higher levels of intimacy, ultimately leading to greater sexual satisfaction. The direct effect of chronotype on sexual satisfaction was not statistically significant after accounting for the mediators, suggesting full mediation. In conclusion, the influence of chronotype on sexual satisfaction is not direct but is instead a sequential process channeled through the quality of the relational bond. These findings highlight the importance of satisfaction and intimacy as core mechanisms in the architecture of marital and sexual well-being, suggesting relevant implications for clinical practice with couples

Circadian rhythms, which reflect individual variations in biological sleep–wake patterns, are associated with vital functions such as psychological well-being and cognitive performance. Circadian typology (chronotype) and the extent to which task performance is aligned with one’s biological rhythm may influence cognitive functioning, particularly in demanding academic contexts. However, how these factors interact with emotional regulation remains insufficiently studied. Through two complementary studies, this dissertation examined the relationship between circadian rhythms, emotional factors, and cognitive performance in university students. The first study (N = 345) investigated the mediating role of emotional regulation difficulties in the relationship between maladaptive cognitive strategies and psychological distress (anxiety, depression, and stress), demonstrating the invariance of this model across different chronotypes. The second study involved an experimental group of 57 participants (25 morning-types and 32 evening-types), who performed a memory task (Operation Span Task - OSPAN) with emotional stimuli at both optimal (synchronous) and non-optimal (asynchronous) times of day. Results did not reveal significant effects of chronotype or time of day on performance. Although the expected differences between extreme chronotypes in synchronous versus asynchronous conditions were not observed, this research identified a psychological mechanism underlying the relationship between cognitive emotion regulation, emotional regulation difficulties, and psychological distress. This pattern proved invariant across chronotypes, but reinforcing the interconnection between cognitive processes and emotion regulation, regardless of individuals’ biological rhythms. The findings open avenues for future research exploring the complex interplay among emotion, cognition, and biological factors across diverse populations and contexts

Survapp: A shiny application for survival data analysis

    No full text
There is a substantial demand for user-friendly graphical interfaces that empower professionals with limited programming knowledge to perform statistical analysis. Although R software is widely used for statistical analysis, it lacks an adequately intuitive graphical interface for individuals without statistical and programming skills. This paper aims to address this gap by introducing an application called Survapp, enabling users, regardless of their computational knowledge, to conduct survival analysis. The development leveraged R software, RStudio, and the Shiny package to create an interactive web app. Survapp incorporates diverse methodologies for analyzing survival data, including Kaplan-Meier, log-rank tests, Cox regression models, parametric accelerated failure time models, decision trees, random forests, and competitive risk analysis (a specific case of multi-state models). Survapp enables users to analyze survival data, offering example databases for various methodologies within the application. However, the primary objective is to allow users to import their own data and conduct their respective analyses in a user-friendly environment. A distinguishing aspect of Survapp is its interface, bridging the gap between complex statistical methods and users with limited statistical and programming expertise

In the modern era of digital technology, the rapid distribution of news via social media platforms substantially contributes to the propagation of false information, presenting challenges in upholding the accuracy and reliability of information. This study presents an updated approach that utilizes Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) alongside with advanced deep learning techniques to improve the identification of false information. In contrast to traditional approaches that primarily rely on analyzing text and assessing the credibility of sources, our methodology utilizes the structural information of news propagation networks. This allows for a detailed comprehension of the interconnections and patterns that are indicative of misinformation. By analyzing the intricate, graph-based connections between news items, our approach not only overcomes the constraints of conventional fake news detection methods but also demonstrates significant enhancements in detection accuracy. This paper emphasizes the revolutionary nature of utilizing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) in the field of fake news detection. It also examines the potential consequences of our research in reducing the propagation of false information. Our model achieved an impressive accuracy rate of 97\%, demonstrating a significant improvement in its ability to identify and classify fake news. The findings highlight the substantial improvement in the ability to detect fake news provided by GNNs in comparison to traditional methods, demonstrating promising growth in the struggle against false information

Addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges has become a pressing global priority. The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework offers a holistic approach for evaluating corporate performance by integrating economic, envi- ronmental, and social perspectives. Despite its increasing adoption in both managerial and academic research, there remains a significant gap in understanding how the TBL framework influences business performance. To address this, the study conducts a bibliometric review of 207 publications from the Web of Science database. The review highlights the multifaceted impact of practices linked to the TBL dimensions on business performance while introducing the TBL Influence on Business Performance model. This model provides valuable insights into how businesses can effectively apply TBL principles to address socio-environmental challenges, foster innovation, and achieve sustained long-term performance. The findings contribute valuable theoretical and practical insights into how organizations can utilize TBL principles to strengthen resilience, innovation, and performance in the face of global socio-environmental challenges

Agricultural support units: Buildings to structure the rural territory

From the dovecotes in the northeast mountains to the windmills on the central coast, it is absolutely imperative to resort to vernacular architecture as an integral part of the collective memory that shapes the cultural landscape of Portugal. Prior to the city, before (temporally and spatially) the urban building, and always beyond housing, the agricultural support building constitutes an inevitable legacy in the national built heritage. To understand the Portuguese territory without it, without considering their ethnographic and architectural terms, without perceiving its importance in the critical review of the modern movement, implies refusing a significant part of the foundations on the international recognition of contemporary Portuguese architecture and its relationship with the context (in its physical and cultural dimension). Using the iconic granary (through its basic function, diversity and evolution), this reflection tests a critical itinerary having as parameters the Programme, Context and Time of this typology. According to the methodological organisation proposed in the research project: “Building Typology. Morphological Inventory of Portuguese City”. Somewhere between the recognition of its expiration and the moral (ir)relevance of its Documentation, between the original functional pragmatism and the (f)utility of reinterpretation, between technological inconsistency and cultural sustainability; this text intends to characterise and reflect on the role of this type of heritage in cataloguing and classifying our architectural heritage

Special Issue Earthen Architecture: Challenges and Opportunities for the 21st Century.Heritage is strengthened through proactive actions, known as preventive con- servation, that are considered before earthquakes, rather than reactive actions addressed when the emergency situation occurs. Considering that there are several regions around the world with very active seismicity, conservation interventions should guarantee human safety and the improvement of the inhabitant’s living conditions while keeping alive the earthen fabric and adobe buildings, thus preserving the lives of the residents but also preserving cultural heritage in the face of earthquakes. The main aim of this paper is to define a comprehensive conservation procedure addressing the preventive conservation of vernacular adobe vaulted houses in Yazd, an Iranian World Heritage property, since 2017. The fundamental phases of this procedure, which this paper’s structure is based on, include introducing the case study and addressing the conservation objectives, the assessment of significance and value, the seismic criteria, the conservation strategies, seismic safety assessment, and decision-making on interventions. The comprehensive preventive conser- vation procedure presented in this paper was determined by relevant conservation criteria, which contributed to an adequate seismic-retrofitted intervention design. This conservation approach requires evaluation of the seismic performance and the buildings’ safety, through which the decision regarding intervention could be made. Accordingly, this research also dealt with the seismic safety assessment of an adobe building through numerical research work performed using the software HiStrA Ver.2022.1.6. Based on the numerical results, decisions on the need and on the extent of intervention techniques were addressed. In addition, a comparative study was performed on different seismic strengthening techniques available in the literature to define fundamental conservation criteria. In this way, there are more chances for human lives to be preserved if an earthquake occurs

    Get PDF
