Therapeutic benefits of a 16-week compassion focused therapy for overeating are associated with positive autonomic changes and Putamen responses
Objective: Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) has shown promise in reducing shame and self- criticism and enhancing compassion in individuals with eating difficulties. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms, particularly those related to learning, are not well understood. This longitudinal study investigated the neurophysiological effects of an online CFT for overeating (CFT- OE) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and heart rate variability (HRV). Method: A total of 15 women seeking treatment for overeating completed a 16- session group- format CFT- OE program. At pre- and post- intervention, participants completed self- report psychological measures and underwent task- based fMRI with concurrent HRV recordings, in which they engaged in four emotion regulation conditions (avoidance, rumination, self- criticism and self- reassurance). A healthy control group (n = 20) was also recruited and completed a single fMRI scan and self- report psychological measures. Results: Following the CFT- OE intervention, a reduction in eating disorder symptoms, self- criticism, rumination, and food thought suppression was observed, alongside improvements in self- reassurance and self- compassion. Participants also exhibited increased bilateral putamen activation during self- reassurance, showing normalization to a level comparable to controls, associated with reduced food thought suppression. Right putamen activation during self- criticism was associated with decreases in binge eating. Cortical activation decreased in several prefrontal areas, including the superior and middle frontal gyri. Correlation analysis showed that improvement in self- compassion engagement and action was associated with HRV changes, suggesting a positive modulation of the vagal system
Tourism and Climate Change: Research on Global Challenges and Opportunities
This book focuses on the intricate relationship between climate change and the tourism industry, examining the challenges and opportunities arising from this global phenomenon. The tourism sector, a significant contributor to both the acceleration and impact of climate change, is scrutinized for its carbon footprint in transportation and accommodation. The direct consequences of extreme weather events further compound the complexity. However, within these challenges lies the potential for positive transformation. The book explores the role of the tourism industry as a catalyst for sustainable practices and environmental conservation. Through an examination of resilient strategies, it aims to provide insights into fostering a harmonious relationship between tourism and the environment, thereby ensuring a positive impact in the context of a changing climate
An individual participant data meta-analysis investigating the mediating role of eating behavior traits in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based weight management interventions
Identifying mechanisms of action can aid the refinement of weight management interventions. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based interventions may support long-term weight management by improving self-regulation of eating behavior traits (EBTs). However, it remains unclear if changing EBTs like emotional eating, external eating, internal disinhibition, and restraint during ACT causes improved weight management
Smartphone-Based Markerless Motion Capture for Accessible Rehabilitation: A Computer Vision Study
Physical rehabilitation is crucial for injury recovery, offering pain relief and faster healing. However, traditional methods rely heavily on in-person professional feedback, which can be time-consuming, expensive, and prone to human error, limiting accessibility and effectiveness. As a result, patients are often encouraged to perform exercises at home; however, due to the lack of professional guidance, motivation dwindles and adherence becomes a challenge. To address this, this paper proposes a smartphone-based solution that enables patients to receive exercise feedback independently. This paper reviews current Computer Vision systems for assessing rehabilitation exercises and introduces an intelligent system designed to assist patients in their recovery. Our proposed system uses motion tracking based on Computer Vision, analyzing videos recorded with a smartphone. With accessibility as a priority, the system is evaluated against the advanced Qualysis Motion Capture System using a dataset labeled by expert physicians. The framework focuses on human pose detection and movement quality assessment, aiming to reduce recovery times, minimize human error, and make rehabilitation more accessible. This proof-of-concept study was conducted as a pilot evaluation involving 15 participants, consistent with earlier work in the field, and serves to assess feasibility before scaling to larger datasets. This innovative approach has the potential to transform rehabilitation, providing accurate feedback and support to patients without the need for in-person supervision or specialized equipment
Wine Tourism and Landscapes: Challenges and Opportunities for a Sustainable Approach
This book identifies opportunities and challenges for wine tourism and landscapes, illustrating how national and international tourism economics could support regional, national, or international policy establishment and improve territorial sustainability. It does not just focus on wine tourism and how it can contribute to sustainable economic development, it also presents an analysis of the importance of wine landscapes and natural and cultural heritage associated to it. Also, it evaluates how the actual challenges and opportunities could impact on wine landscapes, influencing positively and negatively tourism and also the development of local and regional areas
Effects of Price Clustering on African Stock Markets
The phenomenon of price clustering refers to the empirical finding that some prices in financial markets occur significantly more frequently than others. The phenomenon is important theoretically as it challenges the efficient market theory and empirically as it suggests that predictability patterns can be used by investors to devise strategies and investments capable of generating abnormal returns. In this paper, we study the phenomenon for the first time in the context of African markets. Our study includes data from the period spanning 2018-2022 for the stock markets of Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tunisia. Our results provide compelling evidence of price clustering within all markets under analysis. Univariate analysis confirms widespread clustering, particularly favoring closing prices ending in zero and five. The results of the multivariate analysis suggest that stocks with higher prices, lower turnover, and lower liquidity tend to exhibit a higher level of clustering. Contrary to the expectations of the Panic Selling Hypothesis, a more intense clustering did not occur during the COVID-19 pandemic. Collectively, our results offer partial support for the Attraction Hypothesis and the Negotiation/Price Resolution Hypothesis
Sintomatologia Depressiva em Idosos: Resultados da EDG-15 no Projeto They Day Life Span Nowadays [abstract]
