Aggressive Behavior in Adolescents and Emerging Adults: The Psychometrics of the Portuguese Brief Peer Conflict Scale (Brief-PCS)
The Brief Peer Conflict Scale (Brief-PCS) has been shown to be psychometrically suitable for assessing the combination of the forms and functions of aggressive behavior in adolescence. However, its validity, invariance, and utility across other age groups remains unexplored. The current study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brief-PCS in community samples of adolescents and emerging adults, and to compare self-reported aggression across these age groups and by sex. A sample of 891 individuals (58.4% female, Mage = 16.69) completed the Brief-PCS and additional measures assessing psychopathy characteristics, forms of aggression, and overall aggression. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the four-factor measurement model (i.e., proactive overt, reactive overt, proactive relational, and reactive relational aggression) as the best fit for the data. Evidence also supported the scales’ internal consistency and convergent validity. This four-factor measurement model proved to be invariant across age groups and sex. Males reported being overall more aggressive than females, and adolescents reported more aggressive behaviors than emerging adults, except for proactive relational aggression. These findings extend prior research by confirming the Brief-PCS as a psychometrically sound and developmentally invariant tool, enhancing its value for examining both theoretical and applied aspects of aggression throughout the lifespan

The year of 2020 marked the return of coups d’État in the Sahel after a period of apparent political stability. Until 2023 (included) there were registered six more incidents which were divided between Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea, Mali and Niger. This new democratic recession is motivated by a complex set of factors which have been affecting the continent since the first years of independence. Nevertheless, these were aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the failure of French-led antiterrorist military operations in the region. This investigation focuses specifically on the role of external actors, namely the African Union and the Economic Community Of the West African States, in the stabilization and democratization of the Sahel States. This is because the institutional fragility of these actors jeopardizes their ability to prevent coups d’État or, in the eventuality of their occurrence, their authority to impose a quick and effective transfer of leadership to the Sahel States, in order to reestablish the political order and stability. Additionally, this investigation contains an analysis of the Democracy and democratic level of the States that are a part of this region, through quantitative methods that will be posteriorly explained. A brief reflection about the political stability in this context is also included
The use of Generative AI in Academic Work: Insights from University Students and Faculty
The integration of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education raises several discussions on its ethical use, academic integrity, and its role in learning. This study explores the perceptions of students and faculty regarding the use of generative AI in academic assignments, focusing on ethical considerations, student learning, and institutional guidelines. A survey was conducted among undergraduate and graduate students (N=329) and faculty members (N=14) belonging to a specific department (not in the field of STEAM) of a private higher education institution in Portugal. The survey comprised three sections: (I) Use of generative AI in academic contexts, (II) Perceptions of ethical generative AI use, and (III) Practical application of generative AI in academic assignments. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics to identify agreement trends and differences between students and faculty perceptions. Findings reveal significant differences in perceptions. While most respondents acknowledge generative AI as a valuable support for learning, opinions diverge on its impact on skill development and the ethical implications of its use in assessments. Approximately half of both groups disagree on whether GAI negatively affects students' competencies. Despite these variations, there is a strong consensus on the need for clear institutional guidelines to regulate AI’s role in academic work. This research highlights the need for improved
digital literacy and ethical awareness among both students and faculty. It also underscores the importance of establishing structured discussions and collaborative frameworks to navigate the responsible use of AI in education. The findings contribute to ongoing debates on AI adoption in academia and call for the development of best practices to ensure ethical and effective AI integration in learning environments
“+Sucesso@UPortucalense”: Guiding principles of a teacher-student mentoring program to promote first-year student's success
Faculty-student mentoring programs can be integral part of institutional approaches to facilitate students’ transition and adaptation to higher education. This paper presents an outline of guiding principles for the implementation of a faculty-student mentoring program designed for first year students. The initiative is part of a broader project called +Sucesso@UPortucalense, funded by the General Directorate for Higher Education (DGES) and the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Crucial elements of the program include: teacher training, the matching process and group formation, communication and interaction frequency, main focus of the teacher-student interactions, roles and responsibilities, and assessment. The key features of this teacher-student mentoring program are discussed considering the main goals of promoting students’ academic success, personal, social, and career development, and retention in higher education
From Riverbank to Ocean: Involving young generations with their territory through artistic practices
Based on the project Minante: Prototyping a Natural and Cultural Experience for Public Space Co‐Creation (2023–2024), this article presents and discusses how schools from a semi‐rural region of northern coastal Portugal engaged with the natural and cultural water heritage that surrounds them through artistic practices. A total of four schools with classes of different ages took part (12–18 years old), with artistic interventions related to new digital media, illustration, wood construction, plastic arts, and painting. The project occurred in the public space around the old Minante watermill, on the banks of the Neiva River, near the river mouth. Subsequently, interviews, a survey, and a laboratory workshop were carried out with the involved teachers (and the survey also with students) to analyse and reflect on the Minante project and explore potential future actions in other parts of this territory, namely at the wider Neiva River coastal area. With the help of this empirical material, the article aims to reflect on the question: What can be the role of arts‐based local interventions with schools in encouraging young generations’ more direct involvement with the material and immaterial heritage of the waterscapes and territories they live alongside and inhabit

ObEMMA: Mapping Underground Music Scenes [abstract]
This abstract presents the Observatory of Electronic Music and Media Arts (Ob.EMMA). Established in 2019, is a pioneering initiative dedicated to
monitoring, mapping and promoting research in electronic music scenes and media arts in Portugal. Ob.EMMA operates under the ID research center CITCEM (Center for Transdisciplinary Research on Culture, Space, and Memory). Its research focuses on two primary areas: Electronic Music and Media Arts, which are explored both independently and in conjunction with each other. The observatory's key objectives are monitoring and mapping, diagnosis and research, preservation and dissemination, educational outreach and public engagement, and collaboration and networking, contributing to knowledge and promoting academic/artistic reflections on both themes and possible intersections. Currently, there is an archive and consultation platform being developed as part of a pilot project, focused on Media Arts, to be made available on the web. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the observatory brings together artists and academics from a wide range of fields, including communication sciences, social sciences, technology, humanities, and the arts. Ob.EMMA encourages the incorporation of alternative research methods such as autoethnography, considering that the proximity of the researcher to the object adds value to the research process and its outputs, and pratice-based-research where the practice and its results are fundamental for the entire process
