The role of Project-Based Learning (PBL) to promote the development of student’s skills for Lifelong Learning
This paper analyses the impact of Project-Based Learning (PBL) on the development of lifelong learning skills among first-year students who participated in a PBL approach. The study involved 18 students, enrolled in the first year the Social Education bachelor’s program, at Portucalense University, Porto, Portugal. The project involved three curricular units: Research Methods and Techniques II, Ethics and Education, and Information and Communication Society. Throughout the semester, students worked in teams of 3 to 5 members to provide answers to a research problem related to their professional field. To assess the efficacy of PBL, a survey was administered at the semester's end, evaluating students’ experiences and the perceived development of competencies like problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and self-directed learning. Addition- ally, the survey examined how AI tools supported project development and enhanced critical thinking skills. Students identified tasks for which AI was used and suggested ways to maximize its benefits. Findings indicate that PBL contributed to skill development, particularly in collaboration, communication, and applying research techniques in real-world contexts. The continuous feedback and assessment process fostered a reflective learning environment. AI tools were used for literature reviews, data analysis, information retrieval, and generating insights, enhancing task efficiency. In conclusion, integrating PBL in the Social Education curriculum at Portucalense University effectively contributes to develop lifelong learning skills, preparing students for future career success
Cross-Cultural adaptation and validation of the portuguese version of the Metacognitive Prospective Memory Inventory-Short Form (MPMI-s) in non-central nervous system cancer patients
Background/Objectives: Cancer diagnosis and oncological treatments often lead to cognitive impairments, particularly in prospective memory, which affects the ability to recall future intentions. These difficulties can significantly impact therapeutic adherence, especially in the early stages of treatment, where timely medication and appointment adherence are critical. Despite this, effective measures for assessing prospective memory in cancer survivors remain limited. The current study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Short Form of the Metacognitive Prospective Memory Inventory (MPMI-s) for use with Portuguese cancer survivors. Methods: The translation process involved back-translation, expert review, and pre-testing to ensure content validity. Psychometric evaluation was conducted with a sample of 111 cancer survivors [M(SD) = 49.3(9.4), ages 18–65], assessing internal consistency, factorial validity through principal components analysis, and convergent validity. Results: A final 18-item version of the MPMI-S demonstrated strong reliability and validity, comprising four factors: prospective forgetting, monitoring and planning strategies, imagery and visualization strategies, and external aid strategies. Significant correlations were found between these dimensions and traits such as conscientiousness, agreeableness, emotional stability, as well as distress and cognitive functioning. Conclusions: These findings underscore the potential of the MPMI-S as a valuable tool in clinical settings, offering insights not only into self-reported prospective memory abilities but also into the compensatory strategies employed by individuals in their daily routines. By integrating these aspects, this measure helps to identify key opportunities for rehabilitation aimed at minimizing the functional impact of the disease
Development of risk management plan during a global pandemic: The case of Simplesmente ... Vinho
The outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic has had a severe impact on people's ability to move around in space. The index of consumer confidence also suffered a serious setback during the health crisis. As the pandemic showed the first signs of giving way to increased vaccination, the planning and organisation of events became increasingly common. Nevertheless, new waves of the coronavirus, constant changes in government guidelines, World Health Organization recommendations and many other factors meant that event organisers had not just one, but several plans for running their events. From initial online and virtual experiences to hybrid models, that became more standard, to modified and redefined face-to-face events, the industry emerged with new creative impetus to reinvigorate itself. The main aim of this paper is to show how the process of planning, developing and running an event during the COVID-19 pandemic took place. The focus will be on the risk management plan and the measures taken to ensure the safety of all participants. Simplesmente Vinho is an event that could transform itself and defy the circumstances of the pandemic to the extent that it was able to have another successful year in 2021

This report is part of the Internship Course, designed to provide a practical application of the knowledge gained throughout the degree program by placing students in a real-world business environment focused on developing professional marketing skills. It explores the relationship between the concept of Brand Love and the sponsorship strategies implemented by PRIO, Portugal’s largest biofuel company. This work focuses on two of PRIO’s projects: 1) support for summer festivals in Portugal, and 2) the Surf Energy project. Analysing these projects offers insights into PRIO’s marketing strategies and budgetary decisions, highlighting the importance of aligning sponsorship initiatives with the brand’s values and objectives. Aiming to strengthen PRIO’s image as a love brand in the energy sector, the internship included the assessment of various brand activation proposals and sponsorship requests. The methodology consisted of: a) evaluating the feasibility of incoming proposals and participating in marketing projects geared toward younger audiences, with a focus on sustainability and innovation, and b) a literature review on the topics of Brand Love and Sponsorship. This report is organized into ten chapters: introduction, host company presentation, literature review, methodology, description of tasks completed, discussion, conclusion, references, and appendices. The internship provided key insights into marketing and sponsorship management within an energy company, contributing to the development of more effective, market-aligned future strategies for PRIO and its customers. The main contributions of this report lie in demonstrating how well-planned sponsorship strategies can foster Brand Love, increase brand awareness, and strengthen market presence. This internship enabled the development of technical and interpersonal skills, along with a deeper understanding of the company's internal management and marketing practices. It also facilitated the practical application of academic knowledge in real-world settings, providing essential preparation for the job market
SAFE schools: Feasibility and impact of a universal comprehensive approach to managing adolescent aggressive behavior in schools
We investigated the feasibility and outcomes of ‘SAFE schools’
, a comprehensive and universal
intervention approach to school-based adolescent aggression, applied to students and/or teachers.
Though a minority of schools were receptive to the intervention, those who were considered the
interventions socially valid. Quantitative data taken from 145 students and 53 teachers allocated
to one of four conditions (i.e., teacher-only, student-only, combined intervention, no-
intervention) show increased relational and reputational aggression for all conditions and
increased overt aggression for the combined intervention, from pre- to post-intervention. Alternatively,
students reported increased awareness of their difficulties and perceived relevant
changes following the intervention. An increased use of an authoritarian teaching style was
observed in the teachers-only condition. Qualitative data suggests increased knowledge on
aggressive behavior and the adoption of alternative behaviors by both students and teachers.
These findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between awareness and behavioral
practice, as well as considering the characteristics of school contexts and the target population
when implementing interventions and accessing outcome
The diagnosis of infertility is an unexpected event, which may imply a limitation of the scope of a life project that has already been built throughout the development of individuals. Several studies have sought to understand the impact of infertility on women's mental health, with incongruent results. Although some research has found negative impacts on anxiety, depression and stress symptoms in women diagnosed with infertility, other studies have not identified statistically significant differences compared to women without a diagnosis of infertility. Thus, other factors associated with the diagnosis may be at the root of these discrepancies. Thus, this study aims to understand the impact of risk factors such as pregnancy loss, time since diagnosis and/or the existence of children prior to diagnosis can influence the existence and intensity of depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms. To this end, the Anxiety, Depression and Stress Scales (DASS) were used in the selected sample. Through the SPSS program, the statistical analysis of the collected data was carried out, thro’ Pearson’s correlations and MANOVA, to answer research questions. The results were not significant for any research question, which can be justified by the unbalanced division of the sample. The same results lead to new questions that should be considered in further studies
eBEfree: Combining Psychoeducation, Mindfulness, and Self-Compassion in an App-Based Psychological Intervention to Manage Binge-Eating Symptoms: A Randomized Controlled Trial
To develop and test the effectiveness of the eBEfree program, a 12-session app-based version of a previously tested psychological intervention (BEfree) that combines psycho-education, self-compassion, mindfulness, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to reduce binge-eating symptoms.
Two-hundred participants with recurrent elevated binge-eating symptoms and a higher body weight were enrolled in a remote parallel-group randomized trial, of which 142 completed the initial assessment (70 in the intervention group). The end-of-treatment and follow-up assessments were conducted 12 weeks after the initial assessment and 26 weeks after the end of treatment, respectively. Intention-to-treat (ITT) analyzes were undertaken using frequentist linear mixed models and Bayesian hierarchical models to test the intervention effectiveness.
43 (waitlist control) and 29 (intervention) participants completed the end-of-treatment assessment, showing a high attrition rate (51%). ITT analyzes showed the eBEfree program to be associated with a significant reduction in binge eating symptomatology from baseline to end-of-treatment (β = −9.49, ρ < 0.0001, g = −1.17), and from end-of-treatment to 26-weeks follow-up (β = −6.01, ρ = 0.04, g = −1.08). At end-of-treatment, the intervention was also associated with a decrease in body mass index and depression symptomatology, as well as an improvement in dimensions of self-criticism and mindfulness. More than 80% of participants rated the quality of the program as positive and helpful.
This trial suggests potential benefits of the eBEfree program to help individuals manage symptoms of binge-eating more effectively, reduce weight, and improve well-being and mental health. The intervention benefits should be confirmed in future larger trials.
Treating binge-eating (BE) symptoms and associated comorbidities might be challenging for mental health services. Digital and app-based interventions can be a valuable resource to help people manage symptoms and improve well-being and mental health. The current trial suggests the potential benefits of an app-based intervention (eBEfree program) to help people reduce BE symptoms and develop psychological strategies to promote well-being and mental health
Perceptions of Residents of the North of Portugal on Traditional Gastronomy with a Generalized Q Analysis
Agritourism heritage as a response to the abandonment of rural areas: The case of Buenavista Del Norte (Tenerife)
This research examines the ongoing challenge of depopulation in rural areas, focusing on the municipality of Buenavista del Norte in the Canary Islands. Depopulation signif-icantly impacts the social and economic viability of small rural municipalities, exacer-bating marginalization and isolation. The study highlights the role of governance and local community participation in reversing this trend. The research identifies key pro-jects and resources that could foster local development using qualitative methods, such as interviews with public representatives, key strategic sector informants, and partici-patory group dynamics. A core focus is placed on the integration of tourism, particularly wine tourism, as a tool for economic diversification and combating rural decline. De-spite the Canary Islands’ status as a mature tourist destination, rural areas have not equally benefited, with some experiencing stagnation. The study explores opportunities for public-private collaboration and community-based innovation to address territorial imbalances. The participatory approach involves key actors from various sectors, facil-itating a collaborative process to identify viable projects. This research underscores the need for integrated local development strategies, enhanced infrastructure, and quality public services to confront the demographic challenges faced by remote areas. By em-phasizing tourism and sustainable community-based approaches, the study presents a roadmap for revitalizing rural municipalities through inclusive governance and strate-gic planning
