The metamorphic basement of the Los Cuartos region is composed of banded schists and frequent interlayered calc-silicate rocks. These rocks have suffered two main phases of deformation and metamorphism: D1, syn-kynematic with M1, generates a main schistosity S1 , and the foliation of the calc-silicate layers; D2, generates a crenulation cleavage S2, folding of S1 veins and boudinage of the calc-silicate layers. M2, is late- to post-kynematic, and produces chlorite, biotite, garnet and staurolite porphyroblasts. The Los Cuartos granitoid has monzogranitic to tonalitic composition of two micas. The granite is inequigranular. It is calk-alkaline, peraluminous and shows post-tectonic features with regard to the regional deformation. The granitic intrusion produced contact metamorphism in the surrounding basement, with development of andalucite porphyroblasts and poiquiloblastic biotite.

A checklist of the birds of the Mburucuyá National Park, with data of species richness, relative abundance, reproduction, and presence of threatened species is given. In the studied area, 308 species were registered between 1994 and 2009, which represent 62 % of the birds recorded for the province of Corrientes. Two hundred-six species were resident, 68 migrant and 34 of uncer tain occurrence. The families with more species were Tyrannidae (48 species), Emberizidae (24 species), Accipitridae (15 species) and Icteridae (15 species). Forests and wetlands were the habitats of the higher species richness, with 144 and 109 species of birds respectively, followed by tall grasslands with 60 species. Data of reproduction of 104 species were also obtained. Eighteen species are classified as under any level of threat of extinction for Argentina: seven endangered, three are threatened, and eight are considered vulnerable; of these, nine are considered globally threatened: two endangered, three vulnerable and four almost threatened. The fact that this number of species is experiencing any level of extinction threat reinforces the importance of the Mburucuyá National Park for the conservation of the regional avifauna. The record preserved in geological material and in the current landscape is unique and most of it is extremely fragile. Its exploitation and the important climatic variations that occur at a global scale in many cases have a negative effect on its good conservation. A record which is lost can never be recovered, given that it is non-renewable and irretrievable, hence the urgent of the need to understand and protect it. The Campo de los Alisos National Park, Sierra de Aconquija, Tucumán, has a varied geological heritage, offering numerous tourist attractions, natural resources and landscapes not yet used in a sustainable way. We present a preliminary inventory of geological interest sites related to Quaternary cryoforms in the region around the La Ciudacita ruins in order to link this geological heritage with educational aims and economic use. The aim is to increase consciousness about the value of this natural area and the same time the wish to enhance the environmental protection of the geological interest sites.

Global warming from a frog’s perspective: A call for immediate action

    No full text
We, the frogs, have continuously inhabited and evolved on this planet since the Devonian period some 350 million years ago. Our calls announce the beginning of spring, we keep insect populations under control, we serve as toxic pollutant indicators for human health, we are bellwethers for environmental change, we provide important medicine from the chemicals we produce, we help forest peoples hunt food with our poisons, we inspire art and poetry, and perhaps most importantly we inspire peoples to appreciate nature. Once a stronghold of 6200 species, we are now disappearing rapidly and scientists predict that nearly one third, or about 2000 species, will disappear within this century. Our population declines have been attributed to a number of factors such as habitat loss, disease outbreaks, and environmental pollutants (Stuart et al., 2004; Blaustein et al., 2010). In particular, the global spread of an emerging infectious disease, the pathogenic chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has resulted in population collapses and outright extinctions among many amphibian taxa over the past 20 years (Fisher et al., 2009; Blaustein et al., 2010). Now, we serve as indicators to humans of a more insidious slow-motion catastrophe playing out on a global scale. Human-created climatic shifts resulting in increasing temperature and changing precipitation patterns are having large impacts on amphibian assemblages, population numbers, reproduction, behavior, phenology, and physiology (Blaustein et al., 2010). The climate changes are resulting in desiccation of ponds and aquatic breeding habitats, reducing leaf litter, reducing precipitation in cloud forests, all culminating in increased stress, disease outbreaks, and mortality (Pounds and Crump, 1994; Pounds et al., 1999; Whitfield et al., 2007; McMenamin et al., 2008; Blaustein et al., 2010). This article will highlight some of the severe climate-related threats that amphibians are dealing with around the world

    No full text
The relationships between body mass, gonadal size and postnuptial molt of Guira Cuckoo Guira guira are described based on 92 specimens (53 males and 39 females), collected in Magdalena district (Buenos Aires province) during an annual period from 1991 to 1997. Considering the yearly average, no significant differences were found between body mass of males and females. Two periods in variation in the size of the gonads for each sex were determined: one of increased activity (September-January) and the other of sexual inactivity (April-August). Males showed an earlier gonadal development than females. The first egg laying began in October. In mid-December, a decline in the size of the gonads in relation to the onset of postnuptial molt began and peaked in March. The molt was asymmetric; 85,8 % of the studied specimens were in molt.

The Eastern sector of the Chaco plain is drained by autochthonous rivers, regulated by the low slope and the subtropical climate. The regional geomorphology is determined by the mega-alluvial fan, belonging to the Bermejo River. Some of the paleochannels that flow from this unit result into rivers whose chemical characteristics are under the influence of particular local saline soils. Framed within a wetland environment of regional and international interest, these rivers have a great environmental importance. The present contribution is an approach to the understanding of the local hydrosedimentologic dynamics, through the study of two typical river systems of the region. For this purpose, samples were taken from the liquid phase, as well as bed and suspended loads, in different hydrological periods. The material was analyzed in the laboratory by standard techniques; the results of grain size, organic matter and hydrochemical features revealed a particular identity in each water system. However, in both rivers particle size uniformity was observed, with a value of over 50% in abundance of fine materials. Similarly, the suspended load had an analogous behavior in the two rivers, according to which they are inversely correlated with the flow and content of dissolved salts.

The study of behavior and activity patterns in vertebrates can provide tools that may be useful in estimating their well-being. The more these patterns are similar between wild and captive animals, the greater the probability that the latter are in good condition. Providing enrichment activities can contribute to the well-being of these animals. In this study, behaviors of two black spider monkeys, Ateles paniscus, a male and a female, residing in a small artificial island of 1400 m2 in the Experimental Reserve of Horco Molle, Tucumán, are described. Activity patterns are reported for two non-consecutive weeks, with enrichment experiments performed during an intermediate week, in order to evaluate their well-being and suggest strategies that may contribute to their quality of life. The monkeys expressed typical behaviors for the species, with similar frequencies to those cited for wild populations, an important indication of its well-being. This may be due in part to the fact that they live on an island with trees, which gives them more space and diversity. The most frequent behaviors were resting, being alert, moving, and foraging. Contrary to their wild counterparts, they were most of the time on the ground. Given the great interest they showed when presented with different enrichment activities and given that the search for food is an impor tant activity, generally taking place in the canopy of trees in wild monkeys, actions destined to increase these activities could improve even more their quality of life.
