Política emocional y antifeminismo en el discurso público de Victoria Villarruel
Get PDFThe article aims to analyze a series of public interventions (online and offline) of Victoria Villarruel, current vice-president of Argentina, in which she articulates several heterogeneous elements: an active anti-feminism, an emotional politics focused on pain, guilt and shame, and a patriarchal nationalism that appropriates and misrepresents the notion of human rights. Together, these elements construct a regressive sense around issues that are particularly sensitive for feminism: motherhood, the family, the rights of women and lgtbiq+ people, gender, and sexual and reproductive rights. We consider that the figure of Victoria Villarruel is a paradigmatic example of the emergence and consolidation of female figures who publicly assume an explicitly anti-feminist position. In this sense, the analysis of her discursive performance contributes to the understanding of the strategies of conservative resignification of the historical meanings associated with human rightsEl artículo se propone analizar una serie de intervenciones públicas (en línea y offline) de Victoria Villarruel, actual vicepresidenta de Argentina, en las que articula diversos elementos heterogéneos: un antifeminismo activo, una política emocional centrada en el dolor, la culpa y la vergüenza y un nacionalismo de corte patriarcal que se apropia y tergiversa la noción de derechos humanos. En conjunto, estos elementos construyen un sentido regresivo en torno a problemáticas particularmente sensibles para el feminismo: la maternidad, la familia, los derechos de las mujeres y personas lgtbiq+, el género y los derechos sexuales y reproductivos. “Demarcando e ocupando o território internacional”: ativismos digitais de mulheres indígenas brasileiras através da ANMIGA
Get PDFBrazilian indigenous women organized in the ANMIGA (Articulation of Indigenous Women Warriors of Ancestry) network and publicize their national and international actions mainly through their Instagram page, carrying out what I am conceptualizing as digital activism. International activities and struggle agendas, such as confronting violence, are publicized through ANMIGA's Instagram page, highlighting how the presence of Brazilian indigenous women in international spaces, such as CEDAW Committee meetings, promotes global connections and the construction of networks. As a methodology, the article will carry out research on Instagram and netnography carried out on the organization's page, which seeks to analyze and point out the main fronts of action that are being publicized, emphasizing in this article the international action. These indigenous women, who are leaders of their ethnic groups, are present not only in their territories, but also in spaces of power in large cities, which strengthens the networks and connections that originate in traditional territories. Thus, the link with ancestral territories indicates that confronting gender-based violence suffered in their territorial bodies is one of the main agendas of struggle.As mulheres indígenas brasileiras organizadas na Articulação de Mulheres Indígenas Guerreiras da Ancestralidade (ANMIGA) atuam em rede e realizam a divulgação das suas ações nacionais e internacionais através principalmente da página no Instagram realizando o que estou conceituando como ativismo digital. A atuação internacional e as agendas de luta, como o enfrentamento as violências, são publicizadas através da página do Instagram da ANMIGA, evidenciando como a presença das mulheres indígenas brasileiras em espaços internacionais, como as reuniões do Comitê CEDAW, promovem conexões globais e a construção de redes. Como metodologia o artigo irá realizar, através da pesquisa no instagram da articulação, buscando analisar e apontar algumas das frentes de ação, como a atuação internacional. Estas mulheres indígenas, que são lideranças de suas etnias, estão presentes nos só em seus territórios, mas também em espaços de poder nos grandes centros, o que fortalece as redes e conexões que se originam nos territórios tradicionais. Assim, o vínculo com os territórios ancestrais aponta que o enfrentamento às violências de gênero sofridas em seus corpos-território são umas das principais agendas de luta

Get PDFThis article analyzes how YouTube has been used by Brazilian influencers to disseminate masculinist, antifeminist, and redpill discourses, often in connection with right-wing political discourses. The study focuses on three YouTube channels selected for their significant audience and sustained presence over time, with data collected in two phases: 2023 and 2025. Using a digital ethnographic approach, the research involved observing videos, discourse, and imagery disseminated by these channels, with an emphasis on the strategies employed to discredit feminism and reinforce traditional gender roles. Although the three channels adopt distinct styles — one more "academic," another with a humorous tone, and the third openly redpill — they converge in important ways: the repetition of arguments, manipulation of data, and the distortion of narratives to support masculinist and antifeminist viewpoints. The study also highlights the central role of algorithms, monetization, and language as instruments of power in shaping a misogynistic digital culture. These findings underscore the importance of understanding such dynamics in the contemporary struggle over meanings related to gender and power on social media platforms.Este artículo analiza cómo YouTube ha sido utilizado por influenciadores brasileños para difundir discursos masculinistas, antifeministas y redpill, que a menudo se articulan con discursos políticos de derecha. La investigación se centró en tres canales de la plataforma, seleccionados por su audiencia significativa y continuidad en el tiempo, con datos recolectados en dos momentos distintos: 2023 y 2025. A partir de un enfoque de etnografía digital, se observaron vídeos, discursos e imágenes difundidos por los canales, con énfasis en las estrategias empleadas para deslegitimar el feminismo y reafirmar roles de género tradicionales. Los tres canales, aunque adoptan estilos distintos —uno más “académico”, otro con un tono humorístico y un tercero abiertamente redpill— presentan importantes convergencias: repetición de argumentos, manipulación de datos y construcción de narrativas distorsionadas para sostener perspectivas masculinistas y antifeministas. El estudio también pone de relieve el papel central de los algoritmos, la monetización y el lenguaje en la consolidación de una cultura digital misógina, subrayando la importancia de comprender estas dinámicas en la disputa contemporánea por los sentidos del género y el poder en las redes sociales.Neste artigo, analisamos como o YouTube tem sido utilizado por influenciadores brasileiros na disseminação de discursos masculinistas, antifeministas e redpill, que muitas vezes se articulam com os discursos políticos de direita. A pesquisa se concentrou em três canais da plataforma, selecionados por sua expressiva audiência e continuidade no tempo, com dados coletados em dois momentos distintos: 2023 e 2025. A partir de uma abordagem etnográfica digital, foram observados vídeos, discursos e imagens veiculados pelos canais, com ênfase nas estratégias utilizadas para desqualificar o feminismo e reafirmar papéis de gênero tradicionais. Os três canais, embora adotem estilos distintos — um mais “acadêmico”, outro com viés humorístico e um terceiro abertamente redpill — apresentam convergências importantes: repetição de argumentos, manipulação de dados e construção de narrativas distorcidas para sustentar perspectivas masculinistas e antifeministas. Sobre democracia racial, violência gramatical e certezas fulcrais: como um mito se torna regra no imaginário brasileiro
Get PDFThis article investigates how the so-called hinge epistemology, developed by Wittgenstein, can shed light on the persistence of colonialism within Brazilian racial structures by critically taking the myth of racial democracy and the ideology of whitening as analytical axes. We argue that these narratives function as hinge certainties — foundational, unquestioned propositions that shape a particular worldview and, in this case, organize and guide social practices and ethno-racial hierarchies. Drawing on postcolonial theories (Quijano, 1992; Munanga, 2020), we maintain that such epistemological hinges sustain racial domination in the following ways: (1) the naturalization of miscegenation as a synonym for harmony conceals deep material inequalities and the grammatical violence of colonialism; (2) epistemicide (Carneiro, 2023) erases Black imaginaries by imposing a Eurocentric “mystified image”; and (3) the “narcissistic pact of brown Blackness” (Andrade, 2023) reveals assimilation as a survival strategy in hegemonically white spaces.Este artigo investiga como a assim chamada hinge epistemology (epistemologia das dobradiças), de Wittgenstein, pode lançar luz sobre a persistência do colonialismo nas estruturas raciais brasileiras, ao tomarmos criticamente como eixo analítico o mito da democracia racial e a ideologia do branqueamento. Argumentamos que essas narrativas funcionam como certezas fulcrais — proposições estruturantes, não questionadas, que constituem uma determinada imagem de mundo e, neste caso, organizam e orientam práticas sociais e hierarquias étnico-raciais. A partir de teorias pós-coloniais (Quijano, 1992; Munanga, 2020), defendemos que tais dobradiças epistemológicas sustentam a dominação racial pelos seguintes aspectos: (1) a naturalização da miscigenação como sinônimo de harmonia encobre profundas desigualdades materiais e a violência gramatical do colonialismo; (2) o epistemicídio (Carneiro, 2023) apaga imaginários negros ao impor uma “imagem mistificada” eurocêntrica; e (3) o “pacto narcísico da negritude parda” (Andrade, 2023) revela a assimilação como uma estratégia de sobrevivência em espaços hegemonicamente brancos
Memória de trabalho e o efeito da familiaridade com o tópico na compreensão de informações lidas em telas de computadores
Get PDFSeveral independent studies have investigated the effects of working memory capacity and prior knowledge (in this study explored as topic familiarity) on text comprehension. However, until the present moment, few, if none, studies have simultaneously addressed both constructs, that is, how comprehension of information read on computer screens, among readers with lower and higher working memory capacity is impacted by topic familiarity. Thus, this study was carried out in order to investigate how comprehension tests scores of texts read on screens varied with the presence or absence of topic familiarity with groups of readers of different working memory spans. The results indicate a positive impact of topic familiarity, especially for the group of readers with lower working-memory spans, which leads us to consider this study motivating for future research that seeks ways to reduce the demands on working memory capacity and thus enabling better reading comprehension for students with cognitive challenges. Furthermore, reading on digital media has become an inevitable part of contemporary life, hence the importance of obtaining comprehension scores from readings done on electronic devices.Diversos estudos investigaram, de forma independente, os efeitos da capacidade de memória de trabalho e do conhecimento prévio (aqui neste estudo explorado na forma de familiaridade com o tópico) na compreensão de textos. No entanto, até o momento, um estudo que aborde de forma simultânea o impacto dos dois construtos, ou seja, sobre como a compreensão de informações lidas em telas de computador, entre leitores com menor e maior capacidade de memória de trabalho, é impactada pela familiaridade com o tópico, é algo ainda escasso e que precisa de mais investigação. Dessa forma, propusemo-nos investigar, em grupos com diferentes níveis de memória de trabalho, como os escores em teste de compreensão, de textos lidos em telas, variam com a presença ou não da familiaridade com o tópico do texto. Os resultados mostram que houve um impacto positivo da familiaridade com o tópico, especialmente, para o grupo de leitores com menores amplitudes de memória de trabalho, o que nos leva a considerar o estudo motivador para a busca de formas de diminuir as demandas na capacidade de memória de trabalho, desse modo proporcionando oportunidades de melhor compreensão textual para indivíduos com desafios cognitivos. Ademais, a leitura em meios digitais tem se tornado parte inevitável da vida contemporânea, por isso a importância em se obter escores de compreensão advindos de leituras feitas em telas de dispositivos eletrônicos

Mediating Chinese Yi minority culture: The indirect translation of Jidi Majia's poetry into Portuguese
Get PDFThe poetry of Jidi Majia celebrates the traditions of the Yi minority in China, especially the Nuosu tribe, or Black Yi. His works have attracted global recognition, thanks to their translation into over 40 languages, including English, Spanish, Irish, Greek and Scots. In 2019, a Portuguese version of Jidi’s poetry was produced by José Luís Peixoto, as part of a project jointly promoted by the National Press and Publication Administration of China and corresponding Portuguese cultural agencies. Given the relative scarcity of literary translators who are proficient in Mandarin and well-versed in the culture of Chinese ethnic minorities, the translation of Jidi Majia’s poetry into other languages usually relies on “indirect translation”, often using English as an “intermediate language.” For his Portuguese renditions, Peixoto used English, French, and Spanish as intermediate languages and solicited the collaboration of a Portuguese-speaking Chinese scholar, Cláudia You, to check his translations. The published version of Jidi Majia’s poetry in Portuguese is, therefore, the result of multiple layers of interpretation, rewriting, cross-checking and redrafting. As with all examples of indirect and collaborative translation, the process raises questions about responsibility and the relative authority of the contributing actors and intermediate texts. This article explores these questions, drawing not only on the Chinese source text, the English intermediate text and the Portuguese target text, but also on paratexts, including the introduction to the Portuguese edition, the email correspondence between José Luís Peixoto and Cláudia You, Cláudia You’s notes on Peixoto’s draft translations, and an interview with her about her experience as a collaborator. From this case study, the author of the present paper seeks to identify the boundaries and roles that must be negotiated in cases of collaborative and indirect translation, particularly when the outcome is to represent an ethnic minority for a cosmopolitan readership
The reception of Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past among Portuguese-speaking readers: A corpus-based study
Get PDFRemembrance of Earth's Past, Liu Cixin's trilogy beginning with The Three-Body Problem, has gained global recognition for its ambitious scientific vision and philosophical depth, redefining contemporary science fiction. While its reception has been explored in several linguistic and cultural contexts—including English-, Japanese-, and Spanish-speaking readerships—Portuguese-language contexts remain underrepresented in scholarship. This study addresses this gap by examining Portuguese-speaking readers' engagement with the trilogy, seeking to understand its popularity, interpretative trends, and the thematic and linguistic patterns shaping responses. Additionally, it assesses the interplay between positive reception and critical perspectives. Grounded in Reception Theory, particularly the perspectives of Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser, the analysis investigates how readers' expectations, interpretive strategies, and cultural frameworks shape their understanding of the work. Methodologically, it crawls the data and analyzes the Portuguese-language reviews from three major platforms—Amazon.br, Goodreads, and Skoob—spanning the period from April 2014 to March 2025. The reviews were compiled into the reader corpus and compared against the Portuguese reference corpus using Sketch Engine, a computational linguistics tool. The study employs keyword analysis to identify distinctive themes and linguistic patterns within the Portuguese comments. The findings indicate a strong and predominantly positive reception of Remembrance of Earth’s Past across Portuguese-speaking regions. Four interrelated thematic dimensions emerge from high-frequency word analysis: recognition of Liu Cixin’s authorship, engagement with scientific speculation, character complexity, and reflections on cultural paradigms. The reception of the trilogy reveals an ongoing negotiation between readers' established literary expectations and the novel's unique cultural-scientific framework. Through selective accommodation and cultural analogy, readers navigate potential comprehension gaps, adapting the text to their interpretative contexts. This study contributes to translation and reception studies by offering insights into the cross-cultural dynamics of literary engagement
Tradução como espelho de culturas: uma entrevista com o sinólogo brasileiro Giorgio Sinedino
Get PDFComo sinólogo, George Sinedino é membro do Conselho Executivo da Associação Confuciana Internacional e vogal do Conselho Mundial de Sinólogos, além de ser membro da Associação Chinesa de Tradutores e da Associação Internacional de Literatura Comparada. Em Macau, é vogal da Comissão dos Países de Língua Portuguesa da Federação de Associações Culturais. Além da indicação para o Jabuti em 2023, Sinedino venceu a 18ª edição do Special Book Award of China, em junho de 2025, o galardão mais prestigioso na China oferecido a estrangeiros no campo das publicações. Com esse prêmio, é reconhecido seu grande contributo na divulgação da cultura tradicional chinesa nos países de língua portuguesa e nos intercâmbios culturais entre a China e outras civilizações. Nessse contexto, elaboramos uma entrevista tendo como objetivo apresentar as experiências de Sinedino, bem como as ideias relacionadas às suas traduções, seus trabalhos vinculados à disseminação da literatura e cultura chinesa nos países de língua portuguesa, e suas pesquisas no campo dos estudos da tradução.
