Questões raciais em livros didáticos: a interculturalidade crítica como ferramenta de desnaturalização de desigualdades e injustiças sociais
Get PDFThis article discusses racial issues in Brazilian society and how they are addressed in English language textbooks through the lens of critical interculturality, understood as a tool for denaturalizing social inequalities and injustices. The investigation of textbooks is conducted using documentary analysis as a scientific research methodology, adopting a critical perspective that underscores the urgency of an intercultural approach to addressing social issues such as racism in these educational materials. The discussion culminates in the analysis of two units from the Way to English for Brazilian Learners series (Franco; Tavares, 2018), which address ethnic-racial issues in accordance with the principles of critical interculturality, providing support for language education committed to fighting inequalities and promoting social transformation.Este artigo discute questões raciais da sociedade brasileira e como são abordadas em livros didáticos de língua inglesa, sob a ótica da interculturalidade crítica, entendida como uma ferramenta de desnaturalização de desigualdades e injustiças sociais. A investigação do livro didático é realizada por meio de análise documental como metodologia de pesquisa científica, adotando uma perspectiva crítica que ressalta a premência de uma abordagem intercultural no tratamento de questões sociais, como o racismo, nesses manuais de ensino. As discussões culminam na análise de duas unidades da coleção Way to English for Brazilian Learners (Franco; Tavares, 2018) que abordam questões étnico-raciais consoantes com os princípios da interculturalidade crítica, fornecendo subsídios para uma educação linguística voltada ao combate das desigualdades e à transformação social.

White Professors Engaged in Anti-Racism: Racialization, Praxiologies, and Challenges for Critical Language Teacher Education
Get PDFIn this article, as white English teachers at a federal public university in Brazil, we problematize how we have constructed our processes of racialization in our life histories, and how these processes relate to the praxiologies and curricula we experience. Allied with authors such as bell hooks (1994), Cida Bento (2022), Djamila Ribeiro (2019), Jacira Monteiro (2023), Gabriel Nascimento (2019), Esau MacCaulley (2021), among others, in this duo(auto)ethnography (Sawyer & Norris, 2016) we discuss the tensions we feel in our attempts to (re)position ourselves in relation to racial inequalities and how we are implicated in them by our own privileges. We expose ourselves at the risk of criticism as we attempt to generate new possibilities and search for new ways of building antiracist praxis in the areas of critical language education and language teacher education. We attempt to break the comfortable silences that, many times, white people tend to maintain regarding racism in Brazil and show how contextual and contingent antiracist pedagogies are.
Descolonizar a Língua e o Corpo: Multiletramentos Decoloniais e a Desnaturalização da Violência em The Body Electric
Get PDFThis paper analyzes the music video The Body Electric (2014), by the band Hurray for the Riff Raff, as a cultural artifact that engages decolonial multiliteracies practices. Grounded in the work of Duboc and Menezes de Souza (2021), I define decolonial multiliteracies as critical meaning-making practices that integrate multiple languages and media to destabilize colonial structures of power, knowledge, and representation. I argue that the work performs a “grammar of resistance” by subverting the naturalization of gender-based violence in popular culture. Drawing on Judith Butler’s (2018) theory of performativity, I examine how the song and video reinscribe discourses of violence, creating cracks in their normative logic. The intermedial reference (Rajewsky, 2012) to Botticelli’s painting The Birth of Venus is analyzed through the lens of coloniality critique, challenging Eurocentric representations as discussed by Walter Mignolo (2017) and Maria Lugones (2020). Finally, I propose the analysis of the video as a pedagogical gesture toward decolonial language education, weaving together meaning-making practices that aim to dismantle architectures of oppression and insurgent dissident epistemes, thus materializing social justice in the fabric of the sensible. Neste artigo, analiso o videoclipe The Body Electric (2014), do projeto Hurray for the Riff Raff, como artefato cultural que convoca práticas de multiletramentos decoloniais. Com base em Duboc e Menezes de Souza (2021), entendo multiletramentos decoloniais como práticas críticas de significação que ao integrar múltiplas linguagens e mídias, visam desestabilizar estruturas coloniais de poder, saber e representação. Sustento que a obra encena uma “gramática da resistência” ao subverter a naturalização da violência de gênero na cultura popular. Com base na teoria da performatividade de Judith Butler (2018), discuto como a canção e o vídeo reinscrevem tais discursos abrindo fissuras em sua lógica normativa. A referência intermidiática (Rajewsky, 2012) à pintura O Nascimento de Vênus (Botticelli, 1985) é examinada à luz da crítica à colonialidade tensionando representações eurocêntricas, conforme Walter Mignolo (2017) e Maria Lugones (2020). Por fim, proponho a análise do videoclipe como gesto pedagógico para uma educação linguística decolonial, em que se articulam práticas de negociação de sentidos que visam desmantelar arquiteturas de opressão e insurgir epistemes dissidentes, materializando, assim, justiça social na tessitura do sensível
Computadora humana e hipercomputabilidad relativista: una discusión de la Tesis de Turing física
Get PDFThe Turing Thesis states that any effectively computable function is Turing-computable or computable by some Turing machine. Analogously, the physical Turing Thesis states that any physically computable function is Turing-computable. This thesis involves a notion of physical computation distinct from the mathematical version of the definition of computation. First, we discuss the distinction based on the condition of the medium-independent vehicle and Turing's idea of the human computer. Secondly, we discuss the physical Turing Thesis based on the thought experiment of Andréka et al. (2018) in which a relativistic hypercomputer can be built operating in the context of a slowly rotating black hole. With this we obtain a counterexample to the physical Turing Thesis since there would be a computer capable of physically computing non-Turing-computable functions.La Tesis de Turing establece que las funciones efectivamente computables son Turing-computables o computables por alguna máquina de Turing. De modo análogo, la Tesis de Turing física establece que toda función físicamente computable es Turing-computable. Esta tesis involucra una noción de computación física distinta de la versión matemática de la definición de computación. En primer lugar, discutimos la distinción a partir de la condición del vehículo independiente del medio y de la idea de la computadora humana de Turing. En segundo lugar, discutimos la Tesis de Turing física a partir del experimento mental de Andréka et al. (2018) en el que se puede construir una hipercomputadora relativista operando en el contexto de un agujero negro en rotación lenta. Con ello obtenemos un contraejemplo a la Tesis de Turing física puesto que existiría una computadora capaz de computar físicamente funciones no Turing-computables
Philosophical Interpretations Matter
Get PDFIn recent years, there has been an increasing debate about some philosophical aspects of paraconsistent logics. The focus of this controversy has been on whether the notion of philosophical interpretation of a logic is separable or independent from the notion of application of a logic. The concept of application of a logic, or applied logic, comes from Priest (2005). Given a purely technical system, one can apply it to different domains, such as computer science, programming, formal linguistics, electric circuits, neural networks, control systems, reasoning, etc. On the other hand, Barrio (2018) and Barrio and Da R´e (2018) have argued that there is a third dimension of a logic that consists in its philosophical interpretation. This aspect is related to some intended meaning of the logical constants and the consequence relation of the pure system. In this sense, while Barrio and Da R´e have argued that, at least in some contexts, the concept of philosophical interpretation has an explanatory role, Arenhart (2022) has claimed that this concept can be reduced to the notion of application. In this article, we will show that the philosophical interpretation of a logic has a crucial role in the usual stances of logicians and philosophers, which can and must be distinguished from the application of the system. We will focus on paraconsistent logics as study cases for our points since the debate has developed almost entirely around these systems. However, most of our claims can be applied to any logical system. In fact, throughout the paper, we will also provide examples using non-paraconsistent logics
A Constituição brasileira em crise (2015-2022): perda de substância normativa e eficácia seletiva
No full textOur paper offers a constitutional reading of the institutional and economic crisis that started in Brazil in 2015. We analyze the constitutional and legislative reforms that took place under the Temer and Bolsonaro administrations and the application of the Constitution. This analysis shows that a political change began that caused the loss of normative substance in the “transformative” Brazilian Constitution of 1988 and made its selective social effectiveness more acute. Critics who announce the “death” of the 1988 transformative constitutional project capture the revisionist neoliberal practice in recent years, although their statement should not be considered in absolute terms. What in fact occurred was not the abandonment of the constitutional project, but the selective ineffectivity of constitutional norms and programs, which affected mainly social rights and restricted redistribution policies while ignoring the constitutional promises of social transformation. Liberalism with its institutional expression in the separation of powers was maintained, but the progressive essence of the transformative part of the Constitution was emptied.O artigo oferece uma leitura constitucional da crise institucional e econômica que se iniciou no Brasil em 2015. Analisamos as reformas constitucionais e legislativas ocorridas nos governos Temer e Bolsonaro e as formas de aplicação da Constituição. Sustentamos que houve mudança política que causou a perda de substância normativa da Constituição transformadora de 1988 e agravou sua eficácia seletiva, sob uma política neoliberal. Os críticos que anunciam a “morte” do projeto constitucional transformador de 1988 captam a prática revisionista neoliberal dos últimos anos, embora sua afirmação não deva ser considerada em termos absolutos. O que de fato ocorreu não foi o abandono do projeto constitucional, mas a ineficácia seletiva das normas e programas constitucionais, que afetou principalmente os direitos sociais e restringiu as políticas de redistribuição, ignorando as promessas constitucionais de transformação social. O liberalismo, com sua expressão institucional na separação de poderes, foi mantido, mas a essência progressista da parte transformadora da Constituição foi esvaziada
Sistemas agrícolas tradicionais: agrobiodiversidade, conhecimentos tradicionais, cultura e territorialidades em foco
No full textThe specific ways of living, producing, and socializing constitute the territorialities of Traditional Peoples and Communities, forming a system of knowledge and relationships that, associated with mechanisms of production, conservation, and restoration of agrobiodiversity, delineate Traditional Agricultural Systems. These are recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations through the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems registry. In Brazil, recognition is granted by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage. However, the diversity of traditional agriculture has been rendered invisible and vulnerable by homogenizing agricultural models. Thus, we will seek to situate the debate on SATs, in addition to exploring implementation experiences, through theoretical research that uses the deductive method and an exploratory approach. We conclude by emphasizing that SATs represent a paradigm shift in the ways of producing and conceiving development and can be used as an important instrument for the defense of socio-agrobiodiversity.As formas específicas de viver, produzir e socializar constituem as territorialidades de Povos e Comunidades Tradicionais, formando um sistema de conhecimentos e relações que, associadas a mecanismos de produção, conservação e restauração da agrobiodiversidade, delineiam os Sistemas Agrícolas Tradicionais. Estes recebem reconhecimento pela Organização das Nações Unidas para a Alimentação e Agricultura por meio dos registros de Sistemas Importantes do Patrimônio Agrícola Mundial. No Brasil, o reconhecimento é feito pelo Instituto de Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional. Todavia, a diversidade das agriculturas tradicionais tem sido invisibilizada e vulnerabilizada por modelos agrícolas homogeneizantes. Assim, procuraremos situar o debate sobre os SATs, além de explorar experiências de implementação, por meio de pesquisa teórica, que utiliza o método dedutivo e a abordagem exploratória. Concluímos ressaltando que os SATs representam uma mudança paradigmática nas formas de produzir e conceber o desenvolvimento e podem ser utilizados como um importante instrumento de defesa da socioagrobiodiversidade
Cooperação Acadêmica Internacional: diga-me como e com quem cooperas e te direi que tipo de relacionamento tens
Get PDFThe aim of this research was to describe the practices of international academic cooperation between researchers from excellent PPGs at state universities in Paraná and researchers abroad, as well as to describe this network of relationships. This research is qualitative, descriptive, ex-post-factum, whose primary data were collected through thirty-five (35) semi-structured interviews with professors. The secondary data used were the documents from the PPGs studied and the lattes curriculum of the 192 professors from these PPGs. The collected data was triangulated and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The most important international experience for professors and their PPGs was training abroad. International Academic Cooperation practices are based on the individual efforts of professors to leverage and develop partnerships initiated through personal contacts. When there is a need for financial, structural, material, and technological resources to develop research, cooperation tends to be formalized. When they do not depend on these elements, they tend to remain informal. In the networks of relationships between researchers from the PPGs studied and abroad, very strong and very embedded ties (almost relatives and super friends), and strong and embedded ties (co-workers and on-demand colleagues) were identified. No weak or arm-length' ties were identified.O objetivo desta pesquisa foi descrever as práticas de cooperação acadêmica internacional entre pesquisadores dos PPGs de excelência das universidades estaduais do Paraná e pesquisadores no exterior, bem como descrever esta rede de relacionamentos. Esta pesquisa caracteriza-se como qualitativa, descritiva, ex-post-factum, cujos dados primários foram coletados por meio de 35 entrevistas semiestruturadas com professores. Os dados secundários utilizados foram os documentos dos PPGs estudados e o lattes dos 192 professores destes PPGs. Os dados coletados foram triangulados e analisados por meio da análise de conteúdo temática. A experiência internacional mais importante para os professores e para seus PPGs foi a formação no exterior. As práticas de Cooperação Acadêmica Internacional estão pautadas no esforço individual dos docentes para alavancar e desenvolver parcerias iniciadas a partir de contatos. Quando há necessidade de recursos financeiros, estruturais, materiais e tecnológicos para desenvolvimento da pesquisa, a cooperação tende a ser formalizada. Quando não dependem destes elementos, tendem a manter-se informais. Nas redes de relacionamentos entre os pesquisadores dos PPGs estudados e no exterior foram identificados laços muito fortes e muito imersos (quase-parentes e superamigos) e laços fortes e imersos (colegas de trabalho e sob demanda). Orçamento Participativo: um caminho possível para democratizar a Gestão Orçamentária na UNIR - Zona da Mata
Get PDFAlthough there are studies on participatory budgeting in federal universities, most focus on large institutions or propose large-scale interventions covering all campuses. This research, however, presents a model tailored to the specific context of the Rolim de Moura Campus of the Federal University of Rondônia, whose academic community comprises approximately 750 people. The objective was to develop a proposal for democratic management that is compatible with the local reality. The methodology adopted was both qualitative and quantitative, involving students, staff, and the presidents of the three surrounding neighborhoods. Data collection included interviews, questionnaires with content analysis, and document review. The results pointed to the need for greater transparency in the criteria for budget allocation, as well as for communication and training actions that encourage community engagement in decision-making processes. This article is based on the master's thesis entitled “Participatory Budgeting: a viable path to democratize budget management at UNIR - Zona da Mata”, and contributes an innovative approach to the implementation of participatory budgeting in campuses of small-sized federal higher education institutions, promoting more efficient, equitable, and community-driven budget management.Embora existam estudos sobre orçamento participativo em universidades federais, a maioria concentra-se em instituições de grande porte ou propõe intervenções em larga escala, abrangendo todos os seus Campi. Esta pesquisa, por sua vez, propôs um modelo adaptado às especificidades do Campus de Rolim de Moura da Universidade Federal de Rondônia, cuja comunidade acadêmica é composta por aproximadamente 750 pessoas. O objetivo foi apresentar uma proposta de gestão democrática compatível com a realidade local. A metodologia adotada foi quali-quantitativa, envolvendo discentes, servidores e presidentes dos três bairros do entorno. A coleta de dados incluiu entrevistas, questionários com análise de conteúdo e levantamento documental. Os resultados apontaram para a necessidade de maior transparência nos critérios de rateio orçamentário, bem como de ações de comunicação e capacitação que favoreçam o engajamento da comunidade nos processos decisórios.
