Get PDFThe scope of this article is to conduct an analytical-descriptive study ot the litograph entitled A lavagem do minério de ouro perto da montanha Itacolomi (1835) by Johann Moritz Rugendas. The intention is to demonstrate that the image contributes to the advancement of knowledge about the world of labor in the mining and slave cociety of Minas Gerais in the first half of the 19th century due to is verisimilitude with historical reality at the stage of developemental forces of production, in accordance with data collected form contemporaneous sources.O escopo do presente artigo é realizar um estudo analítico-descritivo da litogravura intitulada A lavagem do minério de ouro perto da montanha Itacolomi (1835), de Johann Moritz Rugendas. Pretende-se demonstrar que a imagem contribui para o progresso do conhecimento sobre o mundo do trabalho na sociedade mineradora e escravista de Minas Gerais na primeira metade do século XIX devido à sua verossimilhança com a realidade histórica naquele estágio de desenvolvimento das forças produtivas de acordo com dados coligidos em fontes coevas
Esculpindo “trabalhadoras respeitáveis”: mulheres negras e pobres e a educação escolar no pós-abolição
Get PDFThis article analyzes an educational project offering formal schooling to working women and their children in Brazil during the early decades of the twentieth century. It highlights how these working women – most of whom were Black – organized their lives and labor based on their own conceptions of femininity, domesticity, motherhood, and rights. The study investigates the experiences shaped at the intersections of structural conditions, social relations, and individual choices, as well as the ways in which race, gender, and class influenced their life trajectories. Finally, it emphasizes that the symbolic status associated with the idea of a schooled individual may have served as a political mechanism, combining – albeit with some symmetry – hegemonic notions of domesticity with paid work and public life, thereby redefining how these women could interpret and navigate these social dimensions in different ways, and whenever possible, on their own terms.O artigo analisa um projeto educativo-assistencial de educação escolarizada formal para mulheres trabalhadoras e seus filhos e filhas em Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Destaca como essas mulheres – em sua maioria negras – articularam formas de vida e trabalho a partir de concepções próprias de feminilidade, domesticidade, maternidade e direitos. Investiga, então, as experiências vividas nas interseções entre condições estruturais, relações sociais e escolhas individuais, bem como os modos pelos quais raça, gênero e classe produziram efeitos sobre as trajetórias dessas mulheres. Destaca, por fim, que o status simbólico que a ideia do indivíduo escolarizado poderia oferecer às mulheres negras e pobres pode ter funcionado como um mecanismo político que combinava – com alguma simetria – noções hegemônicas de domesticidade com trabalho remunerado e com a vida pública, redefinindo, assim, o modo como elas poderiam interpretar e vivenciar essas dimensões sociais de diferentes formas e, sempre que possível, a partir dos seus próprios termos

Get PDFBetween 1944 and 1945, Brazil took part in the Allied war effort by sending the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) to Italy. Comprising just over 25,000 men, the FEB was deployed to fight Axis troops during World War II. Although politically contradictory within the domestic context, Brazil’s participation was significant from a political-military standpoint, marking a turning point in the modernization of the country’s Armed Forces. Considered a microcosm of Brazilian society, the FEB was largely composed of individuals from working-class backgrounds—a consequence of recruitment challenges and the high rate of evasion among members of the upper classes. This article aims to examine the process of professional reintegration of a segment of FEB veterans in the city of Juiz de Fora (MG), who, upon returning from the war, faced the challenge of reconciling their combat experiences with civilian life in a society unprepared to receive them and in the absence of effective public policies.Entre 1944 e 1945, o Brasil participou militarmente do esforço de guerra aliado, enviando à Itália a Força Expedicionária Brasileira (FEB), composta por pouco mais de 25 mil homens, para combater as tropas do Eixo durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Embora contraditória no plano político interno, a participação brasileira foi relevante do ponto de vista político-militar, representando um marco na modernização das Forças Armadas nacionais. Considerada uma amostra da sociedade brasileira, a FEB foi majoritariamente composta por indivíduos oriundos das classes trabalhadoras, resultado das dificuldades de recrutamento e da elevada evasão entre membros das camadas mais abastadas. Este artigo tem como objetivo examinar o processo de reintegração profissional de parte dos veteranos da FEB na cidade de Juiz de Fora (MG), os quais, ao retornarem da guerra, enfrentaram o desafio de conciliar suas experiências no front com a vida civil, em um contexto marcado pela ausência de políticas públicas efetivas e por uma sociedade despreparada para acolhê-los

Online terminology resources in medical translation: Practices and perceptions among students and professional translators
Get PDFThe internet and the online resources it provides are essential tools for modern translation practice. In the ever-evolving field of medical translation, using these tools appropriately is especially important when sourcing suitable equivalents for terminology. In this preliminary study, we compare the use of online dictionaries, search engines, corpora, and online translation software by translation students and professional translators. Inspired by our experience of running a funded postgraduate professional medical translation project and based on our own experience as both lecturers in medical translation and professional translators, we designed questionnaires to determine how students and professional translators regard online resources and use them in their work. Our aim is to draw conclusions about how these essential tools are used in practice by postgraduate translation students and professionals in the field of medicine. Our findings will help inform our teaching planning with a view to better preparing students for the world of medical translation
Circulaciones, vacíos y fricciones en las traducciones literarias publicadas en Uruguay entre 1871 y 2021
Get PDFThis paper offers an overview of the source languages of literary translations published in Uruguay based on the data obtained in the interdisciplinary project 150 years of literary translation in printing and publishing houses in Uruguay (1871-2021). Such an overview emerges from the first phase of the project, in which we employed computational tools to process a large volume of information from the perspective of big translation history. The main source of this research is the computerised catalogue of the Biblioteca Nacional del Uruguay, whose cataloguing information was curated and supplemented with other catalogues’ information by the authors and by a group of research trainees collaborating with the project. This paper examines the ‘source language’ variable across the entire time span of the project. By analysing the relationship between some of the source languages and the publishing houses that have published translations in Uruguay, it studies the role played by different languages in the Uruguayan publishing ecosystem. By showing oscillations between the most and least frequent source languages, the panorama that we offer gives rise to a series of hypotheses about translation flows in Uruguay. These variations respond to migratory, educational, cultural, socio-political and translational phenomena, among others, which are discussed individually.El presente trabajo ofrece un panorama de las lenguas fuente de las traducciones literarias publicadas en Uruguay en función de los datos obtenidos en el proyecto interdisciplinario 150 años de traducción literaria en imprentas y editoriales de Uruguay (1871-2021). Tal panorama surge de la primera fase del proyecto, en la que recurrimos al uso de herramientas computacionales para procesar un significativo volumen de información, desde la perspectiva de la big translation history. La fuente principal de esta investigación es el catálogo informatizado de la Biblioteca Nacional del Uruguay, cuyos datos catalográficos fueron curados y complementados con los de otros catálogos por las autoras y por un grupo de investigadoras en formación que colaboran con el proyecto. El presente artículo examina la variable “lengua fuente” en el arco temporal. Mediante el análisis de la relación entre algunas lenguas fuente y los entes editoriales que han publicado traducciones en Uruguay, estudia el papel jugado por las diferentes lenguas en el ecosistema editorial uruguayo. El panorama ofrecido, al mostrar oscilaciones entre las lenguas fuente más y menos frecuentes, da lugar a una serie de hipótesis acerca de los flujos traductivos en el Uruguay. Estas variaciones responden a fenómenos migratorios, educativos, culturales, sociopolíticos y traductivos, entre otros, que se discuten de manera individualizada

Get PDFThis paper aims at investigating themes of maternal agency, power, violence and witchcraft, as they are portrayed in William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, by means of the character of Lady Macbeth and the Weird Sisters, who represent metaphysical authority within the world of the play. In order to do as much, the academic contributions of such scholars as Harold Bloom (1998), Harold Goddard (1951) and Stephanie Chamberlain (2005), as well as others, are employed in order to analyze key passages in the play, all within the backdrop of gender roles in the Early Modern period, as well as the historical sources which inspired Shakespeare’s creation of the play.O artigo a seguir procura investigar aspectos relacionados aos temas da agência maternal, do poder, da violência e da bruxaria, bem como a forma como são apresentados na Tragédia de Macbeth, do dramaturgo inglês William Shakespeare (c.1564-1616), por meio da personagem Lady Macbeth e das três bruxas que representam a autoridade metafísica no mundo da peça. Para tanto, faz-se uso do arcabouço teórico proporcionado pelos estudos de Harold Bloom (1998), Harold Goddard (1951) e Stephanie Chamberlain (2005), além de outros, cotejado com a análise de passagens-chave da peça, sob um recorte histórico que considera o comportamento de gênero no início da idade moderna, bem como as fontes históricas que inspiraram a criação da peça
Critical Language Education for Ethnic-Racial Relations in Brazilian High Schools
Get PDFThis article aims to reflect on teaching practices related to the development of materials for English as an additional language in a Brazilian high school, linking them to ethnic-racial relations and critical language pedagogy. By analyzing our practice as we re-examined the activities first developed over a decade ago, we may track our development as socially engaged educators from a critical perspective (Freire, 1996/2021). Our analysis identified that despite progress in policies and student diversity, racism is still a major issue in schools. The findings reinforce the continued relevance of our emancipatory teaching approach.
