Restauração da mata ciliar do Córrego dos Colibris: ação ambiental envolvendo estudantes do Ensino Médio
Get PDFStream environments are usually neglected in urban centers, being channeled, polluted or even forgotten under the concrete of the cities. Considering the importance of the riparian forest for the conservation of streams and, consequently, the well-being of the population, as well as being a little publicized topic, the objective of this report is to share the experience of a practice that aimed to mobilize processes to environmental education. The practice was developed with high school students from a state public school, within the scope of the vegetation recovery project of the riparian forest in an urban stream, located in the municipality of Niterói/RJ, the Colibris stream. The report indicates that the mediated activity mobilized processes and environmental education in the students, since they were able to understand the importance of restoring the riparian forest of the rivers that drain to the Itaipu lagoon as a way to revitalize the lagoon system.Los entornos fluviales suelen ser descuidados en los centros urbanos, siendo canalizados, contaminados o incluso olvidados bajo el hormigón de las ciudades. Considerando la importancia del bosque de ribera para la conservación de los arroyos y, en consecuencia, el bienestar de la población, así como por ser un tema poco publicitado, el objetivo de este informe es compartir la experiencia de una práctica que tuvo como objetivo movilizar procesos hacia la educación ambiental. La práctica fue desarrollada con estudiantes de secundaria de una escuela pública estadual, en el ámbito del proyecto de recuperación de la vegetación del bosque de ribera en un arroyo urbano, ubicado en el municipio de Niterói/RJ, el arroyo Colibris. El informe indica que la actividad mediada movilizó procesos y educación ambiental en los estudiantes, ya que lograron comprender la importancia de restaurar el bosque de ribera de los ríos que desembocan en la laguna de Itaipu como forma de revitalizar el sistema lagunar.Ambientes de riacho, normalmente negligenciados nos centros urbanos, são canalizados, poluídos ou até esquecidos sob o concreto das cidades. Considerando a importância da mata ciliar para a conservação dos riachos e, consequentemente, o bem-estar da população, além de ser o tema em pauta pouco divulgado, o objetivo deste relato é compartilhar a experiência de uma prática que visou à mobilização de processos para a educação ambiental. Tal prática foi desenvolvida com alunos do ensino médio de uma escola pública estadual, no âmbito do projeto de recuperação vegetal da mata ciliar em um córrego urbano, localizado no município de Niterói/RJ, o córrego dos Colibris. O relato indica que a atividade mediada tornou mais efetiva a educação ambiental nos estudantes, visto que estes puderam compreender a importância da restauração da mata ciliar dos rios que drenam para a lagoa de Itaipu como um caminho à revitalização do sistema lagunar
Há um fundamento normativo na injustiça?
Get PDFThis article pretends to argue that there is a normative foundation in a project of Theory of Injustice. This will be justified because the normativity of injustice is drawn from a historical social experience of (i) domination, (ii) discrimination and (iii) second-order oppression whose social norms and practices are harmful, unequal, structural, institutional and systemic. To develop this justification, we divide the article into three parts. The first part consists of an introduction about the relationship between social philosophy and injustice. In the second part, we present the development of what constitutes the normative point of view of injustice: we will, therefore, present the methodological structure of a Theory of Injustice. Next, we will address its two central theoretical elements, namely, social experience and the historical thread. By exposing the methodological structure and these theoretical elements, we will, on the one hand, develop the theoretical framework that configures the normative foundation of injustice and, on the other, present a way of confronting its reality. Finally, the third moment will summarize, as a conclusion, the arguments presented previously.O artigo busca defender que há um fundamento normativo num projeto de Teoria da Injustiça. Isso será justificado pois a normatividade da injustiça é oriunda de uma experiência social histórica de (i) dominação, (ii) discriminação e (iii) opressão de segunda ordem cujas normas e práticas sociais são danosas, desiguais, estruturais, institucionais e sistêmicas. Para desenvolver esta justificativa, dividimos o artigo em três momentos. O primeiro momento consiste numa introdução acerca da relação entre filosofia social e injustiça. No segundo momento, apresentamos o desenvolvimento do que vem a ser o ponto de vista normativo da injustiça: iremos, assim, apresentar a estrutura metodológica de uma Teoria da Injustiça. Em seguida, abordaremos os seus dois elementos teóricos centrais, quais sejam, a experiência social e o fio-condutor histórico. Mediante a exposição da estrutura metodológica e de tais elementos teóricos, iremos, por um lado, desenvolver o quadro teórico que configura o fundamento normativo da injustiça e, por outro, apresentar uma forma de enfrentamento à sua realidade. Por fim, o terceiro momento irá sintetizar, enquanto conclusão, os argumentos expostos anteriormente
The role of metrics to assess the quality of British teenage language translation into Spanish and Italian using machine translation tools
Get PDFThe rapid evolution of adolescence language, characterized by slang and idiomatic expressions, presents a significant challenge for machine translation systems. Existing research has extensively covered the translation of languages in general; however, there remains a gap in understanding these systems’ ability when faced with adolescent language. This study aims at (i) the evaluation and the comparison of the accuracy of the translations of colloquial language by Bing Translator, DeepL and HelsinkiNLP from English into Spanish and Italian, (ii) the validity and reliability of two different metrics (i.e., BLEU, METEOR) to assess the accuracy and quality of MT tools with informal language, and (iii) the analysis of how specific features of teenage slang influence the ability of online tools to generate precise and comprehensible translations 1000-character excerpts from the Linguistic Innovators Corpus were translated in Spanish and Italian using DeepL, Bing Translator, and HelsinkiNLP and assessed using BLEU and METEOR metrics to verify their quality and reliability. Our findings show that teenage slang poses challenges for all tools, particularly with phrasal verbs and idioms. Our results also reveal that METEOR seems to be more reliable to assess British teenage language into Spanish and Italian

Insider research in media accessibility
Get PDFReflections on insider research, user-led research, and lived experience research, as well as the question of positionality, have long been part of the scholarly conversation in various fields, such as Anthropology and Disability Studies. The present study provides a map of insider research in media accessibility through a literature review and discusses the results of 11 semi-structured interviews with insider researchers working on (media) accessibility and neighbouring fields. Their reflections on positionality in insider research, the benefits and challenges of this approach, their practices in the insider-outsider continuum, and the (in)accessible research processes which they encounter are presented. Researchers reflect on positionality in a nuanced manner, highlighting topics such as visibility and self-reflection, but also stigma and performativity. Experiential closeness to the topic being researched, heightened empathy, and legitimation of insider researchers’ and participants’ knowledge are highlighted mostly as positives elements, granted that researchers are offered psychological support. For most of the researchers, the risks (emotional impact, unclear role of the researcher, if they are well acquainted with the participants, etc.) can be tackled or resolved (through epistemological reflection, through collaboration, through psychological support, etc.) and the general argument is that the benefits of insider research outweigh the disadvantages. Through the researchers’ experience, we argue for greater agency among insiders in the research of media accessibility
Putting queerness into words: The audio description of Sex Education
Get PDFRecent audiovisual works have increasingly featured non-normative characters, setting a trend in the industry. In translation studies, minority representation has been examined through feminist and queer translation theories. In such instances, the translation process is filtered by the professional’s subjectivity and positionality, since translators act as mediators, making translation a purposeful and intentional act. This is especially relevant in AVT, due to the vast scope of audiovisual contents that has traditionally contributed to the perpetuation of stereotypes. Since the cultural turn in translation studies (Bassnett & Lefevere, 1990), feminist and queer approaches have produced significant works (Baer, 2020; Castro & Ergun, 2017). Although AVT has been a focus (Martínez-Pleguezuelos, 2018), applying queer feminist perspectives to media accessibility is less explored (Iturregui-Gallardo, 2023; Iturregui-Gallardo & Hermosa-Ramírez, 2024). Netflix’s Sex Education (2019–2024) exemplifies diversity, presenting fresh views on sexuality and identity, especially in its final season, which featured more queer and intersectional characters. This paper examines the audio descriptions (AD) of the series, by means of a multimodal approach (Villanueva-Jordán, 2024) to analyse how queerness is constructed and represented in the audio described version of the audiovisual content. The analysis raises questions about the agency, subjectivity, and ideology of accessibility professionals in AD. The results emphasise the importance of diversity in AD and its impact on queer and non-normative visually impaired people’s social engagement and self-representation
Formação de professores (de ciências) na Inglaterra: racionalidade técnica e despolitização da educação científica
Get PDFNeste editorial apresentarei um breve panorama das reformas e políticas educacionais relacionadas à formação e ao trabalho de professores na Inglaterra, prestando especial atenção em como elas vêm moldando, nas últimas décadas, a formação e o trabalho de professores de ciências no país baseados em uma perspectiva técnico-racional e apolítica. Como educadora científica atuante tanto na formação inicial quanto na formação contínua de professores na Inglaterra, me preocupo particularmente com o fato de que questões sociocientíficas e de justiça social cada vez mais complexas e interligadas tornaram-se a norma em todo o mundo nas últimas décadas, evidenciando a crescente complexidade das relações entre conhecimento e práticas científicas, desafios e injustiças sociopolíticas. No entanto, como busco examinar neste editorial, as políticas relacionadas aos professores de ciências na Inglaterra parecem permanecer enraizadas em uma perspectiva técnico-racional, frequentemente retratando a ciência e o trabalho dos professores de ciências – incluindo a sua formação – por meio de uma lente positivista, neutras, objetiva e desconectada de questões de poder, de cultura e das estruturas e práticas sociopolíticas.In this editorial, I will outline a brief overview of educational reforms and policies related to teacher education and work in England, paying special attention paid to how they have been shaping science teachers’ education and work in country through a technical-rational and apolitical perspective for the past decades. Of particular concern to me as a science educator working at both Initial Teacher Education and Continuous Professional Development levels in England is that increasingly complex and intertwined socio-scientific and social justice issues have become the norm across the world in the past decades, showcasing the growing complexity of the relationships between scientific knowledge and practices, socio-political challenges and injustices. However, as I will endeavour to show across this editorial, science teacher-related policies in England seems to remain rooted in a technical-rational perspective, often portraying science and science teachers’ work – including science teacher education – through a naïve positivist lens as neutral, objective, and disconnected from power, culture and socio-political structures and practices
O efeito de realidade em Solução de Dois Estados, de Michel Laub
Get PDFSolução de Dois Estados is a contemporary novel that captures the intolerance present in Brazilian society. Amid the political polarization in Brazil over the last decade, Michel Laub writes a story about two siblings who cannot reach an understanding, portraying a relationship marked by resentment, violence, and hate. This work aims to observe how the author produces a reality effect in his book, which appears to be based on two distinct strategies: 1) its hybrid structure, for which this paper relied on Krysinski ([2004] 2012) regarding hybridity in literature; and 2) the presence of repetitions associated with traumatic realism, understood through Foster ([1996] 2005). Barthes (1972) and Rancière (2010) are referenced regarding the concepts of reality effect. For the methodology analyzing hybridity, eleven book fragments were classified by style and textual genre. To analyze the traumatic realism present in the novel, passages containing repetitions in the main characters' speeches are highlighted and discussed. The study concludes that the book produces a reality effect, primarily through the hybridization of fictional and non-fictional text, as well as the persistent presence of traumatic repetitions throughout the plot.Solução de Dois Estados é uma obra literária contemporânea que capta a intolerância presente na sociedade brasileira. Em meio à polarização política observada no Brasil na última década, Michel Laub escreve uma trama sobre dois irmãos que não conseguem chegar a um entendimento, retratando um relacionamento marcado por ressentimento, violência e ódio. Neste trabalho, pretendemos observar como a obra de Laub provoca um efeito de realidade em sua leitura, fenômeno que parece decorrer de duas estratégias distintas: 1) sua estrutura híbrida, na qual nos apoiamos em Krysinski ([2004] 2012) quanto ao hibridismo na literatura; e 2) a presença de repetições pertencentes a um realismo traumático, entendido a partir de Foster ([1996] 2005). Para os conceitos de efeito de realidade, nos apoiamos em Barthes (1972) e Rancière (2010). Quanto à metodologia empregada na análise do hibridismo, classificamos onze fragmentos do livro, que variam quanto aos estilos e gêneros textuais empregados. Para a análise do realismo traumático presente na obra, destacamos alguns trechos contendo repetições que retomam traumas nas falas dos personagens principais. Verificamos que a obra produz um efeito de realidade, o que ocorre principalmente a partir da hibridação entre texto ficcional e não ficcional, bem como da presença constante de repetições traumáticas ao longo da trama
Cenas do dissenso na poesia de Golgona Anghel: um diálogo com Jacques Rancière
Get PDFThis article is dedicated to analyzing the ways of narrating “dissensus”, a concept proposed by Jacques Rancière, in the writings of contemporary Portuguese poet Golgona Anghel. In the works Like a plastic flower in a butcher’s shop window (2013), I came because they paid me (2011) and Swim in the little ones’ pool (2017), poems that maintain a narrative dialogue with the “rationality of dissent” will be analyzed. Rancière resorts to a detailed analysis of aesthetic effectiveness when associated with political action in its origin: the recognition of non-equality and the importance of breaking with the “scenes of words” that maintain the “machine of explanation”, based on the class struggle and, at the same time, on its perpetuation.
El artículo está dedicado a analizar las formas de narrar el “disenso”, concepto de Jacques Rancière, en la escritura de la poeta portuguesa contemporánea Golgona Anghel. En las obras Como una flor de plástico en el escaparate de un carnicero (2013), vine porque me pagaron (2011) y Nadar na pool dos Pequenos (2017), se analizarán poemas que mantienen un diálogo narrativo con la “racionalidad del disenso” . Rancière recurre a un profundo análisis de la eficacia estética cuando se asocia a la acción política en su origen: el reconocimiento de la no igualdad y la importancia de romper con las “escenas de palabras” que mantienen la “máquina de explicación”, basada en la lucha de clases. y, al mismo tiempo, en su perpetuación.O artigo é dedicado a analisar os modos de narrar o “dissenso”, conceito de Jacques Rancière, na escrita da poeta portuguesa contemporânea Golgona Anghel.
