Ficção do horror e a alegoria do monstruoso: interfaces entre psicanálise e estudos queer

    Get PDF
This article explores the intersections between psychoanalysis, queer studies, and horror cinema, highlighting the potential of this genre to address questions of gender, sexuality, and identity. Through a theoretical framework based on concepts such as "Das Unheimliche," abjection, and the return of the repressed, it examines cinematic narratives that employ the monstrous and the uncanny to reveal unconscious fantasies and normative transgressions. Films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show are analyzed as emblematic examples of how horror engages with the strange and the abject to challenge gender and sexuality norms, as well as to subvert symbolic and social hierarchies. The study argues that horror cinema, by integrating elements of the unconscious and cultural critique, offers a rich perspective for understanding contemporary psychic and cultural dynamics. It concludes that horror, as an aesthetic language, serves as a field of resistance that contributes to expanding psychoanalytic and cultural debates on difference and otherness.

15 years on: Sam Harris’s Moral Landscape, a Retrospective Critique

    Get PDF
In his best-selling book The Moral Landscape, Sam Harris develops a model for a universal ethics. His version of consequentialism has had some impact on the public, specifically on so-called new atheists. On the book’s 15th anniversary, I look back at and retrospectively critique Harris’s “science of morality” to see if it has stood the test of time. I first summarise the view, then identify various problems with it. Thereafter, I turn to arguably the most famous utilitarian, Peter Singer, for potential solutions to these problems. Since the publication of Harris’s book, Singer and Katarzyna de Lazari-Radek have written The Point of View of the Universe. This book looks to Henry Sidgwick’s The Methods of Ethics for answers to many of utilitarianism’s perennial challenges, some of which Harris does not ostensibly overcome. My aim is to investigate whether Singer and de LazariRadek’s utilitarianism (as informed by Sidgwick) can succeed where Harris’s version seemingly does not

Competências do intérprete: uma análise bibliométrica das produções científicas entre 2003 e 2023

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research on interpreter competence to identify the concepts and theories related to interpreter competencies in the most impactful bibliographic references. To achieve this, we used the quantitative analysis models proposed by Aria and Cuccurullo (2017). Data on scientific production on the topic were collected from Scopus and Web of Science databases and filtered according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, the ten most impactful articles identified in the bibliometric study were analyzed. The study concludes that the field of interpreter competence is still evolving, as publications show a growth rate of 10.35% in the number of publications over the past two decades. It is also noted that most authors are occasional researchers on the topic and there is a low level of international collaboration in the published research, as well as low local citation rates. Another notable point is the strong presence of China as the leading country in terms of authors who publish the most and are most cited. Based on the results and conclusions of this study, it is possible to identify gaps in the field and propose a research agenda.O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma análise bibliométrica da produção sobre competência em interpretação com a finalidade de identificar nas referências bibliográficas de maior impacto os conceitos e teorias sobre competências do intérprete.

Analysing collocations in articles published in coworking blogs in Portuguese: A comparative study on authentic and translated texts

    Get PDF
This paper reports on a descriptive and comparative study that falls within corpus based translation studies (Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2004). The goal was to identify and describe similarities and differences in the collocations used in articles published in coworking blogs written originally in Portuguese and in texts of the same genre written in English and translated into Portuguese. Tagnin’s (2013) taxonomy was used to inform our view of collocation. We assume that translated texts may use word combinations that do not sound natural in the target language because they are atypical in texts written originally in this language, following Mauranen’s (2007) findings. Also, this paper’s first author has worked with specialized translation for over a decade and observed that, in this context, there is a generalized expectation for texts to sound natural. We therefore argue that translators should be aware and have a good knowledge of collocations. The articles were collected from websites maintained by coworking companies, processed and analysed following corpus linguistics principles, a methodology that allows the identification of linguistic patterns. Two corpora were used: 1) a parallel corpus, with texts written originally in English and their corresponding translations into Portuguese and 2) a monolingual corpus with texts originally written in Portuguese. The corpora were stored in Sketch Engine (Kilgarriff et al., 2014), and the collocations were identified from n-gram lists from both corpora in Portuguese. The analyses found collocations that were frequently used in both corpora, such as trabalho flexível and espaço de trabalho, which describe professional environments and ways of working. As expected, differences were also found. One example is escritório privativo, which appears only in the translated corpus. In the authentic corpus, this concept is expressed as sala privativa. Thus, this article may be used to raise awareness, among translation students, professional translators, and professors, of the importance of looking for conventional word combinations in the target language while translating texts. This paper reports on a descriptive and comparative study that falls within corpus based translation studies (Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2004). Speech rate perception in audios in Easy Language amongst individuals with intellectual disabilities

    Get PDF
Easy Language is a simplified language variety designed to enhance accessibility for individuals with comprehension difficulties. While its application in audiovisual contexts—such as podcasts and radio news produced in various languages—has garnered interest, guidelines for its oral and audio use remain limited. One common recommendation is to adopt a slower speech rate, yet specific guidance is rarely provided. Furthermore, it must be considered that speech rate perception is influenced by various factors, including language-specific norms and cognitive load, complicating the development of universal recommendations. This intralingual study investigates speech rate perception among 35 native Catalan-speaking individuals with intellectual disabilities, evaluating responses to Easy Language recordings in Catalan at four speech rates: 130 wpm, 150 wpm, 170 wpm, and 190 wpm. Participants rated the perceived speed of each recording on a five-point Likert scale, ranging from “too slow” to “too fast”. Results revealed two distinct patterns: one subgroup found all speech rates acceptable, while the other exhibited greater variability in ratings, reflecting a more refined perception or reduced acceptability of certain speeds. A significant age difference was observed between these subgroups, though no differences were identified in cognitive performance, as measured by Raven scores

The Haunted House in St. Ives: Ghostly Presences and Sensuous Memories in Virginia Woolf’s “A Sketch Of The Past”

This article explores how Virginia Woolf’s memories as worked into her piece of life writing “A Sketch of the Past” (1939-1940) can be perceived as haunted. Employing the tropes of the “haunted house” and “ghostly presences,” we examine Woolf’s “colour-and-sound memories” (Woolf 66) of her childhood summer home—Talland House in St. Ives—and its central spectral figure: her mother, Julia Stephen. To develop this, we situate “Sketch” within the broader field of life writing, emphasizing its fragmented and sensorial nature while discussing the hybrid and liminal characteristics of auto/biography. We then delve into the relationship between houses and memory (Lee 2020; Bachelard 1964) and the concept of hauntology (Derrida 1994; Rahimi 2021) to highlight the inextricable link between memory, space, and haunting as well as how Talland House emerges as a site of spectral memory, with Julia Stephen as its abiding ghost

The Garden as a Place of Rapture: Reading Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, and Clarice Lispector

This paper investigates four moments in modernist literature where female characters encounter non-human spaces, which can be read as a reimagining of the patriarchal narrative of origin in the Book of Genesis. In two of Virginia Woolf’s novels, To the Lighthouse (1927) and Between the Acts (1941), as well as in Katherine Mansfield’s short story “Bliss” (1920), the characters face a pear tree, while in the short story “Love” (1960), by Brazilian author Clarice Lispector, a moment of surprise takes the main character to the Botanical Garden. These experiences of rapture lead to a displacement in their lives and a creative opening to the reader through art

In order to learn Chemistry, students have to make connections between different levels of chemical knowledge. Therefore, visualization skills are essential in this process since they can support the creation of visualizations/representations. In this study, we investigated how high school students participating in a modeling course showed evidence of using visualization skills to investigate and explain properties of different plastics. From the whole set of data produced from video recordings of the course meetings, we selected episodes in which they manifested such skills and classified them using a priori and emergent categories. The results show that several of the visualization skills analyzed were manifested in all the stages of modeling and related to different levels of chemical knowledge. Based on the results and conclusions, we highlight the importance of science teachers involving students in scientific processes that favor them to use and develop their visualization skills.
