This article presents a phenomenographic study with elements of biographical interviewing on stress in caring for homeless animals. The aim of the study is to demonstrate how stressful this work is and to illustrate how stress is experienced. The theoretical section presents the problem of animal homelessness in the contemporary world. It describes the legal reality regarding animal care in Poland based on the Animal Protection Act of August 21, 1997. Furthermore, it addresses the phenomenon of stress in caring for homeless animals. Three categories were developed to describe the intended objectives: 1. characteristics of the study participants; 2. stress – ways of experiencing stress and stress-inducing areas; 3. functioning of government support and practical implementation of the Animal Protection Act. The study results in an interpretation of the participants’ experiences. Those working with homeless dogs perceive increased stress levels and other strong emotions related to their chosen occupation. Factors influencing the frequency and intensity of stress experienced while working with homeless animals are related to the entire system in which the respondents function – from their biography, through support mechanisms, economic situation, to applicable law.

Populism and Instrumentality: From Pathological Symptoms to Ontological Sinthomes for Educational Theory

This contribution suggests a new reading of education's relationship with two problematic contemporary elements: populism and instrumentality. Usually, political and educational scientists portray populism as instrumentalizing education for goals outside its scope, while growing tendencies in educational philosophy go further to see education as heterogeneous with any instrumentality whatsoever. Both positions reduce the contingency, dislocation and antagonism that populism and instrumentality may inflict to education to an exceptional pathology that education can (should) bypass. By relying on Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s political ontology, this paper does not look at populism and instrumentality as antagonists to education only in how they are an external negativity disturbing education but also as symptoms of the internal negativity of education permitting its (re)articulation in the first place. The author estimates that this starting point can emancipate the study of education's relationship to populism and instrumentality from a simple description of scandalous states to an ontological investigation with epistemological and ethical results that touch more adequately on the urgent challenges of certain forms of populism and instrumentality to education. This contribution suggests a new reading of education's relationship with two problematic contemporary elements: populism and instrumentality. Magical everyday life in Poems by Jadwiga Żenczykowska

The author discusses the only collection of poems by Jadwiga Żenczykowska published in 2002, simply titled Wiersze [Poems]. It was issued posthumously in Szczytno, where the Borderland Pole ended up in 1945, after several years of wandering caused by the Bolshevik coup (1917) and the loss of a vast estate in Oleksandrivka near Kyiv. Being a teacher of Polish and Russian at Polish common, primary and secondary schools, the legacy she left is a collection of lyrical memories, very often with specific addressees in both her closest and more distant surroundings. In this sense, not only does Poems by Jadwiga Żenczykowska hold original literary value and is far from amateur verse, but it also provides a significant insight on everyday reality, especially on the post-war period and life in her new tiny motherland in a Masurian town of Szczytno. Poems is the author’s intimate journey from her childhood to adulthood, steeped in melodious verse and dance rhythms, reminiscent of Volhynian scents and both sadness and joy caused by forced resettlement. The author discusses the only collection of poems by Jadwiga Żenczykowska published in 2002, simply titled Wiersze [Poems].

    Get PDF
The aim of the paper is to analyze Enfants du lichen, a book of poems by Maya Cousineau Mollen, an Innu poet born in 1975, in order to see if the labyrinth can be considered as a figure of the postcolonial Native American experience. Although the word « labyrinth » does not make its explicit emergence in the poems, their lexical field evokes a whole imagination which makes it emerge implicitly and allows us to believe that the figure of the labyrinth corresponds to the situation of the former colonized. Our contribution is divided into three parts. The first characterizes the postcolonial Native American experience, as described in the poems, and explains why it may be seen as a labyrinth. The second shows the exploration of the paths of possible escape and the last focuses on the exit, the « passage from darkness to light », which can be read as a new era in the life of Canadian Native Americans. The aim of the paper is to analyze Enfants du lichen, a book of poems by Maya Cousineau Mollen, an Innu poet born in 1975, in order to see if the labyrinth can be considered as a figure of the postcolonial Native American experience. The current article aims to present the woman’s destiny, which was expressed by the poets of French symbolism in the symbols that create the aquatic universe of 19th century, consisting of both female mythological characters and water itself as an element, which has been endowed with characteristics appropriate for mothers. The historical-literary and comparative method permit to present the figure of the mother as a woman’s destiny glorified in the epoch. Its main elements that emerge from the poems are fertility, providing nutrition, peace and safety. In addition, it can be concluded that the poetic image corresponds to the social vision, responding to the needs of the contemporary society. The current article aims to present the woman’s destiny, which was expressed by the poets of French symbolism in the symbols that create the aquatic universe of 19th century, consisting of both female mythological characters and water itself as an element, which has been endowed with characteristics appropriate for mothers.

    Get PDF
This study explores the Freudian mechanics of mourning as depicted in Brigitte Giraud's A Present and Vivre Vite. The hypothesis posits that these two works, separated by twenty years, illustrate the evolution of mourning through a chronological examination of À présent (2001) and Vivre Vite (2022). The methodology focuses on the concepts of temporality, hallucinations, and melancholia, analyzing how these themes shift between the two narratives. The conclusion argues that Giraud's use of temporal shifts, hallucinations, and melancholic reflections in both books demonstrates the universality of Freud's mourning concept while highlighting its unique individual expressions. Notably, the shift from intense emotional expression in À présent to a more introspective approach in Vivre Vite reflects the author's own personal journey with loss and the passage of time. The study suggests that Giraud's skillful use of language serves as a vital tool for both personal healing and for capturing the collective human experience of loss and resilience. This study explores the Freudian mechanics of mourning as depicted in Brigitte Giraud's A Present and Vivre Vite. The critique of irony, characteristic of anti-modernism? Antoine de Saint Exupéry and the irony of the «dunces»

    No full text
This article examines Antoine de Saint Exupéry's anti-modern, anti-ironic positions, whose writings castigate the irony of a suspicious attitude towards customs, ceremonial and, more generally, tradition. It proposes to identify the targets of Exupéry's criticism, these «dunces» or these «ink spitters» – Camus, Sartre, the surrealists – and to measure how this ideological tension participates in Saint Exupéry's anti-modernism (based on the work of Antoine Compagnon). This article examines Antoine de Saint Exupéry's anti-modern, anti-ironic positions, whose writings castigate the irony of a suspicious attitude towards customs, ceremonial and, more generally, tradition. The Politics of a Portrait: Biopics, Slavery and Contemporary Racial Politics in the United States

    Get PDF
The article examines the connection between the past and the present, and between the personal and the political, in three recent biographical pictures directed by filmmakers of color: The Birth of a Nation (2016, dir. Nate Parker), Harriet (2018, dir. Kasi Lemmons), and Emancipation (2022, dir. Antoine Fuqua). By addressing the history of American slavery, the films not only come into a dialogue with the preexisting representations of slavery in music, photography and cinema, but also reflect on current racial politics and antiracist activism in the United States. They offer a commentary on changing attitudes towards the issue of race in America, and engage with the collective memory of slavery - a past trauma, which has shaped the African American identity. The article examines the connection between the past and the present, and between the personal and the political, in three recent biographical pictures directed by filmmakers of color: The Birth of a Nation (2016, dir.
