The findings of this review indicate that ChatGPT can significantly enhance foreign language writing skills and conversational capabilities, offering tailored language support. Through personalized feedback and guidance, ChatGPT has the potential to facilitate more effective knowledge acquisition and create practical and interactive learning experiences, particularly in applied sciences. It is important to note, however, that ongoing debates surrounding accuracy, currency, and reliability should be taken into account. Thus, the study emphasizes the cautious and responsible use of ChatGPT within educational contexts. To summarize, when used responsibly, AI chatbots such as ChatGPT can enrich language learning processes and provide practical and active learning experiences, ultimately fostering more effective knowledge acquisition. Therefore, this review underscores the significance of bolstering the tech-literacy of both educators and students, integrating novel technological skills into educational curricula, and investing in comprehensive training on technology usage for students. By embracing these approaches, educational institutions can harness the full potential of AI chatbots in enhancing the learning journey

Influence of Detail Level in Acoustic Modeling of Heritage Buildings. Case of the Lonja de los Mercaderes in Valencia

    Get PDF
Acoustic modeling of heritage buildings presents a significant challenge due to the architectural complexity of these spaces and the need to preserve their authenticity. In particular, the precision of the virtual model in historical environments largely depends on the level of detail applied during simulation. This study examines the influence of detail level in acoustic modeling applied to the Lonja de los Mercaderes in Valencia, a prominent example of Gothic civil architecture in Europe. Using ODEON software, three virtual models of the main hall were developed with varying levels of detail, from a high-precision model to a simplified representation. The results show that a highly detailed model increases computational costs, while a reduction in detail leads to greater dispersion in results, especially at low frequencies. This research highlights the importance of finding an appropriate balance in detail level, providing reliable acoustic estimates without compromising efficiency. These findings contribute to ongoing discourse on heritage conservation practices, emphasizing how simulation technologies can aid in preserving acoustic integrity while addressing practical limitations. The conclusions have implications for the application of simulation technologies in other highly complex heritage buildings.

Regional archaeological research focusing on landscape was developed in the southern sector of Punta Indio (northeast of Buenos Aires province, Argentina). That sector, which covers an area of 722 km2 (Figure 1), had limited archaeological backgrounds. During fieldwork, systematic prospections were performed, by which four sites linked to hunter-gatherer groups were registered: Los Tres Ombúes, El Puesto, Don Enrique and Corral del Indio (Figure 2), of which the first two were excavated. By integrating the obtained data, it was made possible to understand this sector as a part of the landscape inhabited by hunter-gatherer groups in the Late Holocene (1110-260 years C14 BP; 982-1796 years cal.). This article, on the one hand, aims to present the results of several analyses performed through Geographic Information Systems (GIS), based on original spatial information obtained by an archaeological approach at the southern sector of Punta Indio, as well as its regional context. On the other hand, it focuses on discussing the contributions of this approach to the research of the Late Holocene archaeological landscape in the northeast of Buenos Aires province (Argentina). The methodological strategy consisted of complementary GIS-based analyses: visibility, mobility, and suitability areas estimation. Three scales were defined for these analyses: the archaeological site, a local study sector and a wider area of 12.000 km2 corresponding to the regional scale. For each considered site, visibility conditions and accessibility to the immediate surroundings were analysed. Regarding visibility, results showed similarities between Los tres Ombúes and Don Enrique, both located on the Río de la Plata coastal plain. From these places, a large portion of the plain is potentially observable. In addition, the visibility conditions of the sites linked to the Samborombón river -El Puesto and Corral del Indio- encompass the watercourse and its surroundings, including the mouths of tributary streams and nearby lagoons (Figure 3). The accessibility to the last sites immediate surroundings proves there was easy access to the river in half an hour duration routes. Moreover, the sites of the Rio de la Plata coastal plain evidence immediate access to the estuarine coast, as well as to minor courses that flow here (Figure 4). According to the obtained model, the distances, easy to walk within half an hour to three hours, could imply access to neighbouring sites. The archaeological places considered for this study are separated from each other by longer distances. However, some of these show relations with others in the area. As the accessibility maps indicate, all the long-range mobility isochrones imply a wider reach than the study sector. Also, the formulation of transit areas from the optimal routes obtained by GIS (Figures 5-6) allowed us to inquire about the sector mobility and the wider area involving the integration of obtained results with the archaeological knowledge of adjacent areas. The transit areas show the importance that the Río de la Plata estuary and the Samborombón river coastlines, as the Salado river coast, could have had for the human groups’ mobility. In addition, a multicriteria evaluation with regional scope (Figure 7, Tables 1-2) allowed us to obtain a present-day location aptitude model of the inhabited places in the landscape; consequently, it was possible to explore the environment variables possibly linked to the settlement modalities. Even though archaeological sites are located in some of the higher altitude points in the landscape, the sample does not show a strong influence of the net altitude (Figure 8). Therefore, relative altitude regarding the close surroundings could have had a bigger influence on the site's location. The places showed good visibility conditions and good accessibility to the immediate surroundings, which imply watercourses and bodies that were possibly travelled during the inhabitants’ daily activities. They could have also been linked in mobility nets related to social interaction networks inferred for these groups, which could have mutually visited with different and multiple purposes. According to suitability areas estimation, the sector sites are related to very suitable conditions. That is also verified in the wider area, where the distribution shows a strong link with very suitable locations, near watercourses and bodies or to the Río de la Plata coastline. As the Samborombón and Salado rivers eventually suffered water excesses, possibly the regional mobility could have had a seasonal component. Also, results suggest that the coast constituted a main route in the northeast of Buenos Aires. Even though the coastline is highly dynamic and presents an accessible and inaccessible sectors alternation, there are nearby shell ridges -longitudinal elevations that probably facilitated human movement in the past. GIS-based methods essentially helped to understand the Late Holocene archaeological landscape in the northeast of Buenos Aires. This enabled an original interpretation of the landscape considering four factors: the characteristics of the inhabited places, the practices of the hunter-gatherer groups, the settlement modalities and the movements of those groups across the landscape. Consequently, the authors highlight their potential for hunter-gatherer research in South American lowlands contexts.

This paper deals with the study of construction and geometry, as well as with the analysis of deformations and active degradations of the natatio belonging to the Western Baths in La Alcudia archaeological site. Its location in Elche-Alicante, Spain (Colonia Iulia Ilici Augusta), is widely known for the discovery of The Lady of Elche in 1897. The dimensions of this natatio in the frigidarium are 6.60 x 9.30 m (22 x 31 Roman feet) and 1.50 m deep, making it one of the largest Roman swimming pools documented to date on the Iberian Peninsula. The natatio has several cracks sealed with materials used in earlier interventions at the end of the third century. Its comparison with the hypothetical original form allowed the researchers to quantify the current deformations. A damage evolution study has been made comparing the 2016 point cloud with the 2022 cloud, both obtained by light detection and ranging (LIDAR). There is evidence that an active process of degradation and deformation is gradually increasing damage to the pool. By studying the geometry and constructive systems of the natatio, relevant data to understand the historical evolution of the Western Baths have been provided. A results analysis conclusion is that the pool was built in two different stages. The eastern half corresponds to the original natatio, while the western half was extended or rebuilt after having collapsed. The early abandonment of the use of the natatio was most likely due to deformations caused by differential settlement; this occurred when the western half was cemented on landfill between the ancient wall and that of the last third of the 1st century AD.El presente trabajo aborda el estudio de la construcción y geometría, así como el análisis de las deformaciones y degradaciones activas que presenta la natatio perteneciente a las Termas Occidentales del yacimiento arqueológico de La Alcudia, en Elche, Alicante (Colonia Iulia Ilici Augusta); éste es conocido internacionalmente por el hallazgo de la Dama de Elche en 1897.

This paper aims to demonstrate how the combination of digital methods for virtual reconstruction is valuable both for knowledge dissemination and for its application in research. Through the case study of the tomb of Henenu (TT 313: Deir el-Bahari, Luxor), this paper shows that the virtual reconstruction techniques constitute a very powerful tool to test hypotheses. Based on this objective, namely the testing of several hypotheses about the dimension and location of various tomb stelae, the authors explain the workflow used during the reconstructing process of these stelae found in the tomb of Henenu and suggest their originally intended setting within the tomb. Hundreds of stelae fragments were found by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art archaeological expedition between 1922 and 1923. Upon these discoveries, archaeologists decided to reconstruct four stelae, emphasising stela A, whose quality attests for its relevant position in the monument. William Hayes identified four different stelae on the basis of the rock types, the stelae fragments thickness, the edge types (curve-edged vs. flat-edged), as well as the iconographic and inscriptional materials attested through the fragments. In 2015, the Middle Kingdom Theban Project (MKTP) continued with the previous works in the area and initiated the recovery of hundreds of fragments from the tomb of Henenu, some of them previously unattested. Once the archaeological and architectural data were collected, the MKTP specialists proceeded to calculate and reconstruct the four stelae dimensions through digital means. In addition, the researchers tested whether these four stelae fit the rock-cut niches identified for their original location. All of them were located in the tomb main corridor leading to the public cultic area within the rock-cut tomb. The following pages describe the workflow used in this process, expanding from the tomb cleaning and laser scanning to digital documentation and modelling. For this project, the architects of the team used the laser scanner Faro Focus 3D to document Henenu’s tomb, including the corridor leading to its cultic chamber, as well as the tomb restricted (sacred) areas (i.e., burial chambers and shafts). The data obtained was subsequently processed in Leica Cyclone to obtain a mesh. However, the resulting mesh was not sufficiently clean as it presented some noise. Noise consists of anomalies generated during the scanning process, and it is critical to achieve the most accurate result. The cleaning process was carried out in different software. The outcome was then imported into the Blender modelling software. This result enabled the researchers to create a virtual model of Henenu’s stela A, which was then textured using the Substance Painter software. For this procedure, specialists searched for ancient Egyptian limestone stelae examples with similar textures. In the final phase, Photoshop and Substance Painterwere combined, which was key for reproducing the details of the inscription carved in the stela A. The stela major topic is the provision of offerings to the deceased and the guarantee of benefactions for the deceased; this explains why the presumable niche for this object was just at the entrance of the tomb.  The ancient Egyptian findings reconstruction is an essential part of the archaeological, epigraphic, and conservation initiatives conducted by the MKTP in the cemeteries of Deir el-Bahari and Asasif (Luxor, Egypt). This multidisciplinary international project seeks to continue with the excavation, documentation, and publication of the archaeological, artistic, and material finds dating to the Eleventh and Twelfth dynasties in the Theban necropolis. Thanks to the virtual reconstruction and to the study of the related data, scholars were able to choose one of the initial reconstruction and location hypotheses of these stelae, providing an answer to the initial question of the project, particularly in the case of stela A.Highlights: La combinación de diversos métodos digitales para la reconstrucción virtual es una poderosa herramienta para la difusión y la investigación del patrimonio arqueológico.

Highlights: Some archaeological results obtained using SAR-X images received through the PAZ satellite and applied to a part of what was called Ager Cosanus are shown in this article. The study has been completed with the analysis of multispectral images TripleSAT and Sentinel-2A and the historical aerial photos from 1944 and 1954. The possibilities of using PAZ images treated multi-temporally as a high-resolution panchromatic image applicable to multispectral optical images of the type Sentinel-2 were tested. Abstract: Some archaeological results are shown in this article, which have been generated from the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-X images obtained from the PAZ satellite and applied to part of what was called Ager Cosanus, that is, the territory of the city of Cosa, which was one of the first maritime colonies of Rome in the heart of Etruscan territory. Our study has been carried out mainly based on previous works in which a set of images was used to improve the quality of the resulting image, reducing the noise caused by the speckle of the radar images and maintaining the quality of the spatial resolution that can be obtained from these images (1.25 m/pixel). More specifically, a set of images obtained between 2019 and 2021 was used. The study has been completed with the analysis of multispectral images TripleSAT and Sentinel-2A, the historical aerial photos taken from 1944 and 1954, and the use of the historical cadastre of Tuscany, prepared at the beginning of the 19th century. As an addition, the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) of the Region of Tuscany was used, on which various functions of the Relief Visualization Tool (RVT) programme have been applied, complementing or contrasting the results. It can be confirmed that the multi-temporal treatment of SAR PAZ images provides better results than an individualised analysis of the image. Finally, it is of great interest to verify the results of studies using new technologies, where it was previously possible to resort only to prospecting on the ground and to analogical aerial photography in black and white. In this case, the Sinistra Decumano I (SDI) structure was seen, which Castagnoli observed in the aerial photography, but of which he only located materials on the ground and it was visualised both in individualised PAZ images and in Sentinel-2.Este artículo muestra algunos resultados arqueológicos generados a partir del uso de imágenes SAR-X obtenidas a través del satélite PAZ y aplicadas a una parte de lo que se denominó ager cosanus, es decir, el territorio de la ciudad de Cosa, que fue una de las primeras colonias marítimas de Roma en el corazón del territorio etrusco.

Highlights: Geomaticsthree-dimensional (3D)reconstruction of lost Syrian heritage (PalmyraRoman Theatre)with spherical photogrammetry, recreating the monument’s conditions before its destruction. Operationsof polygon decimationto optimise the geometry of the 3D model for virtual reality (VR) and metaverse applications, including texturing operations to enhance realism. Development of a virtual environmentto be explored in a shared and immersive metaverse platform, available online to disseminate the historical significance of the Roman Theatre in Palmyra. Abstract: Cultural heritage encompasses both tangible and intangible aspects for each of us, and efforts must be made to safeguard this legacy for future generations. Unfortunately, in addition to natural and environmental degradation, human activities pose a significant threat to the integrity of historical sites. Monuments and architecture have frequently been intentionally destroyed in conflict zones all over the world. Three-dimensional (3D) and virtual technologies can serve as tools to digitally preserve these sites and raise awareness about the importance of historical properties to the general public, particularly when physical sites are at risk or no longer exist. This challenging field of lost heritage is the framework of this project, in which a procedure of geomatics-based techniques such as spherical photogrammetry, 3D modelling and virtual reality (VR) technologies was developed to reconstruct lost historical architecture. The Roman Theatre in Palmyra, Syria, partially destroyed during Syria’s war in 2017, serves as a case study. The methodology report starts with the description of the metrological foundation of the 3D model construction, i.e. spherical photogrammetry as developed by Prof. Fangi (Marche Polytechnic University). Then, the geometry optimisation phase carried out to accomplish the VR limitations in terms of polygon count is presented. Ultimately, the procedure for the virtual environment construction is explained, as well as the development of a metaverse scenario to be visited and shared on an online-based platform. This collective virtual experience aims to revive the destroyed architecture and communicate its significance to the public through a collective and interactive virtual exploration. This study also includes experiments to assess user response, providing insights into methodology effectiveness in conveying Palmyra’s Theatre historical relevance and shedding light on the users’ perceptions of virtual tools usage for lost heritage dissemination. The evaluation questionnaire’s results will guide the project’s future developments.

Core to the proposition is the amenity embodied in the plan. The architectural composition in the plan enables amenity to adjacent properties by seeking a departure from the street-wall forms at its key intersection. This building therefore does not follow the now-familiar proposition of urban forms and urban walls. The interiors, in-turn, yield to the formal nature of the hand-form in the plan and such that privacy or unnecessary (and harming) views of the poorly developed adjacent sites are masked for the benefit of distance views to the inhabitants.
