Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates (KRJDA) was a pioneering architecture firm responsible for the introduction into North American architecture of variables resulting from the mass use of private cars. The firm designed buildings to be seen by speeding highway traffic, they studied different options to minimize the impact of vehicle parking in the administration buildings in the suburbs and even modified customs and elements deeply entrenched in architecture such as access and entry adapting it to the possibility of accessing them by car instead of on foot. This article analyses key elements of this work within those three scopes of action: on a territorial scale, in terms of typological innovation and the calling into question of entrances as architectural elements. These examples with their unique innovative solutions reflect how these architects understood that vehicles provided a new sense of the everyday to society, influencing how architecture was seen, used and approached.
In the research conducted within the Architectural Composition Department at the Toledo School of Architecture, we have addressed various issues related to built heritage and urban landscape. Within this research area, over the past few years, we have focused on a complex heritage system such as the urban convents of the city of Toledo. These architectural complexes, which once numbered just over fifty in the city and of which the buildings of about thirty still remain, have played a decisive role in shaping the urban structure of Toledo as well as in characterizing its prevalent image as a “convent city”. Each of these architectural complexes takes on the character of isolated and self-sufficient “micro-cities”, articulated around a key element: the convent cloister. Our research, while not overlooking the usual lines of typological, morphological, and stylistic classification of convent cloisters, is distinguished by focusing on the analysis of the role played by the convent cloister in a twofold sense: firstly, as a fundamental architectural element for understanding the structure, character and composition of Toledo’s convents; and secondly, in terms of the role played by the cloister and/or convent courtyard in granting order and composition to the city to the extent that the cloister becomes one of the most characteristic elements of the cultural heritage of the historical city of Toledo.
How can we approach architectural composition nowadays? Should we maintain the theoretical substratum that is established only in the architectural design practice, or should we contribute concepts that channel the problems derived from our intervention on the environment, taking it as the ultimate foundation of any architectural creation process? First, by formulating a new environmental aesthetic that values it as such. And secondly, by analyzing its risks within the new limits set by the climate emergency we are faced with. The Architectural Composition Area at the University of Alcalá exemplifies this approach through ongoing research projects. One such project is “EXTREME CITY,” which analyses the challenges of designing for intense and extraordinary urban environments that go beyond the typical urban experience. Another is the “HETEROTOPIC AND HUNGRY CITY,” which envisions a floating city as a defense mechanism, expanding its reach and influence on the territory while simultaneously demonstrating its independence from the natural world that sustains it. The intelligent application of cutting-edge technologies could pave the way for a future of BIOTECHNOLOGY-based architecture, seamlessly integrated with the natural world. In a contrasting yet complementary and resistant approach, NEO-RURALISM offers a compelling alternative form of habitation. By embracing the vast potential of increasingly depopulated rural areas, it incorporates risk assessment as a key “compositional” parameter in exploring these new ways of living.¿Cómo podemos abordar la composición arquitectónica en estos tiempos?
This article is part of the reflection on the Japanese animated series Hakuoki Shinsegumi Kitan (Idea Factory, 2010), an adaptation of an otome video game saga with the name of Hakouki. The narrative places us in the Edo era where the protagonist, Chizuru, is forced to dress as a man and live under the rules of the members of the Shinsengumi, one of the last police forces of the Tokuwaga Shogunate period. From an interdisciplinary approach, we will analyze how the animation of this Japanese series translates and models otaku culture based on three fundamental components: emotion, history, and esthetics.
This paper addresses the development of a methodological process and sustainable architectural design through the exchange of information between construction models created using the BIM methodology and the most common energy certification programs. Historically, this transfer of constructive information has been a manual task that the designer has had to face, often through the generalization and simplification of the energy models. This document describes a methodology and a proprietary free web application, which enables the reading of information contained in IFC and GBXML files, and incorporates, in an automated manner, the necessary data into the energy model, facilitating its rating, contributing to its evaluation, improving its energy performance, and, consequently, reducing its carbon footprint. The application has been successfully evaluated based on case studies and pilot tests conducted over the course of the IMIP project, simulated energetically with the assistance of the tool. This approach represents a new strategy in the fight against climate change as it: (a) reduces the working time in energy certification processes; (b) facilitates the interaction between different digital models promoting a more informed decisionmaking process in environmental design, which ultimately should contribute to reducing the impact of public and private buildings in Southwestern Europe.
Measurement of consumption in the public drinking water service generates various benefits, the most obvious being the charging according to the quantity of water measured at an appropriate rate. On the other hand, compliance with the human right to water requires that the supply be sufficient, healthy, acceptable, accessible and affordable. This work evaluates how much the measurement of consumption and the applied rates are reflected in a service of these characteristics, as the main benefit of its implementation in the municipalities of Mexico. In these, the service coverage in 2018 was 98.6%, and domestic consumption was billed in 63.5%, where only in 6.5% of these it was based on measurement and in 31.0 % based on measurement and fixed rate. At the same time, 76% of the population bought bottled water to drink, not trusting water from the public network.
In Spain there are around 70.000 reservoirs. According to current legislation, users and administrations are obligated to classify them based on the potential risk in the event of a rupture, if they have more than 100.000 m3 or the dam height exceeds 5 m. With the aim of creating a support system for their classification that facilitates and expedites this process, the ACROPOLIS project has been carried out. To this end, the numerical modelling tool Iber played an essential and cross-cutting role. On one hand, the use of Iber allowed for the development of a simplified method for pre-classifying reservoirs based on machine learning techniques. On the other hand, ad hoc methodologies were developed in Iber to streamline and automate processes, such as the automatic extraction of hydraulic and hazard information at vulnerable points, and the parallelization of the code for computation using high-performance computing techniques.
In this work, the content of some metals and metalloids in an area with permeable pavements has been determined. First, urban sediment samples from the permeable and impermeable zones have been analysed and the influence that the antecedent dry period has on the accumulation of metals has been observed. Then, the content of metals in the permeable material has been analysed and finally, urban runoff has been compared with the runoff that has passed through permeable pavements. Sediment results show that temporal variable is not significant for most metals and metalloids; however, differences have been observed between the sediments of permeable and impermeable pavement. Regarding water samples, permeable pavements have provided benefits in the physicochemical properties, especially in the reduction of turbidity and thus, of suspended solids (TSS). In dissolved metals, a decreasing trend have been observed for some metals and metalloids, but not for all. It could be considered to compare several samplings after rainfalls of different intensity to obtain more information about the influence of permeable pavements on the quality of urban runoff.
Implementation and Evaluation of a Curricular Framework for Online Language Courses
Constraints caused by the Covid-19 pandemic led to a spike in courses originally designed for in-class instruction being delivered online. As the pandemic wanes many courses will return to in-class instruction while other programs will look to develop post-pandemic long-term online courses, indicating a clear need for an effective curriculum for online foreign language classes. This article describes the implementation and evaluation of a newly developed curricular framework for online language courses at university level. Primarily, this framework is designed to foster oral proficiency. The technology used to implement the framework was also developed specifically to facilitate speaking practice. We have used the framework at Purdue University to develop a curriculum for Japanese online courses Levels 1–4 (i.e., semesters 1–4). Japanese Level 1 is used in this article to illustrate the features and effectiveness of the framework. The framework has three major components: asynchronous self-learning modules, weekly small-group synchronous sessions, and performance-based assessments. Each component involves a pedagogical innovation, a technological innovation, or both. This study’s main research question was, “Do students in an online course designed using the new framework develop a degree of oral proficiency comparable to that of students in a classroom?” An oral test administered at the end of the course showed that the online students performed comparably to their classroom counterparts on question and answer and picture description tasks and outperformed them on an elicited imitation task. The results of a questionnaire also indicated participants’ positive perceptions of the technology used and the online course itself. These findings serve as further evidence for the effectiveness of the proposed curricular framework
Using TED talks to improve engineering students’ oral skills
This paper deals with the training of undergraduate engineering students and is interdisciplinary in nature. It brings together three distinct aspects of scientific dissemination: the content of an engineering degree; the oral transmission of this content following the effective TED talks model; and the use English as a medium of scientific transmission. The paper highlights the need for trainee Spanish engineers to be able to communicate their work to the public through oral presentations that are brief and entertaining, yet scientifically rigorous. The core of the study consists of an analysis of a particular TED talk that is relevant for a variety of engineering degrees. We conclude that while it is necessary for Spanish engineers to receive specific training at a professional level in oral communication skills, there is a close relationship between the mode of transmission and the subject specific content to be transmitted that needs to be considered carefully. Developing a mastery of English is important, but essential communication skills are the most crucial aspect, regardless of the language of communication
