Redesigning an Online English as Second Language Course during (and for after) Emergency Remote Teaching
Online language teaching has become a reality for many second language (L2) programmes that were delivered remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many L2 tutors had to redesign their courses for online delivery and explored a range of online learning and teaching tools, designs, and platforms. This paper discusses how a language module has been redesigned in response to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). The initial reason for this migration was due to the pandemic, but it has provided an opportunity to review the teaching and learning methods used in the module, its course structure, design, and learning materials, and to improve their accessibility. Student engagement and interaction with course content, instructions, and other learners were also reviewed. Two years after the course first moved online, the module convener and students have settled into the new digital environment and explored ways to maximise the technological affordances in ways that can enhance students' learning experiences and digital literacies. This paper presents the tools, methods, and techniques that have been implemented in this course, alongside relevant literature, and student feedback. Results highlight the significance of a well-structured and multimodal VLE that fosters student interaction in the L2, but also that achieving this requires ample time for tutors to reconsider and adapt various aspects of the course

In recent decades, Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has evolved into a dynamic area of language education research. Nevertheless, a notable gap persists in the literature: the Global South's perspectives, challenges, and innovations remain underrepresented. Here, the “Global South” is not merely a terrain and warrants a definition because it foregrounds the volume’s value. Global South refers to historically marginalised regions such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America, where eduscape is affected by postcolonial legacies and systemic inequalities, in contrast to the Global North. “Computer-Assisted Language Learning in the Global South: Exploring Challenges and Opportunities for Students and Teachers,” edited by Lee McCallum and Dara Tafazoli (2025), is a timely contribution to the field of technology-enhanced language learning in the Global South
Use and application of artificial intelligence in public policy evaluation. A Scoping Review.
Context: Despite growing interest in using AI to improve public policies and services, its application in evaluation lacks systematised evidence and scientific publications on the implications of these technologies in evaluation practice.
Objective: To map, through available literature, the current and emerging state of AI application in public policy evaluation.
Methods: We conducted the study through an exploratory literature review, or scoping review, following the methodological framework of Levac et al. (2010). The synthesis was carried out with a thematic analysis of 27 studies and analytical-theoretical literature.
Results: AI is increasingly being applied in various phases of the evaluation cycle, primarily as a support tool (“human-in-the-loop”), especially in the operationalisation, report preparation and results dissemination phases. Use cases include the analysis of large volumes of administrative and textual data through Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP), the performance of simulations and counterfactual analyses, the potential for real-time monitoring, and the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for synthesis or visualisation tasks, among others.
Conclusions and implications: Current evidence points toward the predominance of human-machine collaboration models (human-in-the-loop), indicating that realising the benefits of AI in this field does not involve total automation, but rather strategic, critically reflective and contextually adapted implementation
Determinants of IMV take-up among homeless people in Spain
Only 7% of homeless people who are entitled to receive Minimum Living Income (IMV) do so. Analysis of take-up using logistic regression shows that the amount of the benefit does not act as an incentive to apply: the greater the need, the lower the number of applications. Other factors that reduce the likelihood of applying for the IMV are sleeping on the streets or having been homeless for a longer period, which suggests that the costs of uprooting associated with belonging to this group may outweigh the potential benefits of receiving the IMV, preventing applications and creating a vicious circle of despair. The consideration of variables that measure the desire to improve one's situation indicates that there are also virtuous circles: those who are looking for work or have access to a flat are more likely to apply.
Support and the dissemination of information by social workers—not only about requirements, but also about the benefits linked to the IMV—could encourage applications among homeless people. Another solution lies in the automatic collection of the IMV through a negative income tax, which requires the public administration to share its information resources and the generalisation of income tax without a lower income limit. The expansion, unification and dissemination of information to the research community would also generate advantages in the study of homelessness and the possibilities for proposing solutions.
Climate change critically affects food production, availability, and stability, particularly in regions that rely on subsistence agriculture. This study examines the relationship between climate variables and food security indicators in Burundi from 1990 to 2022 using a co-integration model within an Error Correction Model framework. Results reveal that precipitation positively influences food production annually but negatively in the long run. Food consumption, producer prices, and rural populations also exhibited long-run negative effects. The findings highlight the adverse impact of climate change on agricultural yields, emphasizing the need for strategies to enhance productivity, resilience, and sustainability among smallholder farmers.
Challenges and opportunities for precision livestock farming applications in the rabbit production sector
Precision livestock farming (PLF) is an established field in many livestock sectors. However, when it comes to rabbit production, it is still emerging. Nevertheless, we believe that the rapid advancements in sensor technologies, data analytics and automation we are witnessing can bring significant and transformative opportunities to the rabbit farming industry. Within this context, this paper explores the potential use of PLF for the rabbit sector. We start by briefly reviewing the current state of the art of PLF applications in other livestock sectors, such as dairy and pig farming, focusing on remote sensing solutions. Then we outline how different technologies can potentially be adapted for rabbit production. Recent rabbit research studies that implement PLF-like technology are then reviewed. We finalise by discussing the challenges of implementing PLF in rabbit farming, including the need for tailored solutions that consider rabbits’ specific behavioural and physiological characteristics. When considering the future impact of PLF, early disease detection probably offers the highest potential for rabbit production. Being able to automatically detect early signs of digestive disorders around weaning, particularly in large group-housed growing rabbits where disease spread is a concern, would represent a significant step forward. Additionally, PLF tools can enhance rabbit breeding and genetic programmes by providing detailed and accurate individual phenotypic data. Data can be then used to better define animal management practices that promote positive experiences and affective states, reducing negative social interactions. Besides, precision feeding models could contribute to enhancing feed efficiency for both growing and reproductive rabbits, reducing the negative environmental impact of feeding. To this end, camera monitoring, sound analysis, electronic feeders, accelerometers and other biometric and physiological monitoring technologies can be utilised. The integration of PLF technologies promises to support farmers in meeting the increasingly stringent welfare regulations across the European Union, ultimately enhancing the sustainability and profitability of rabbit production systems. Further research is needed to address the challenges that remain in developing and validating reliable algorithms so that sensors can be used more effectively in diverse rabbit farm conditions
In cases of child to parent violence where parents are assaulted by their minor children, they have the right to receive all necessary prevention and intervention resources from the public authorities, either to prevent the occurrence of such a violent situation or to stop it and avoid the initiation of the proceedings altogether. Moreover, in accordance with the principle of minimum intervention, recourse to criminal law should only be used in the most serious cases, where less drastic solutions than criminal sanctions cannot be applied.
Based on these premises, we carried out a study on the institutional response to child to parent violence in our country, alluding to the route that parents take to find an institutional tool that is effective and the situation of secondary victimization or institutional mistreatment to which they are often subjected to.
In a more precise way, we carried out an analysis of the interventions developed prior to criminal proceedings for minors, based on a judicial sample of 726 cases. The results indicate that there is a high rate of interventions prior to criminal proceedings and a high rate of abandonment of these interventions, which confirms that criminal proceedings are used as a last resort and that more effective prevention and intervention measures prior to criminal proceedings are necessary.
The graphic work of MiguelanxoPrado, one of the most prominent Spanish comic authors at a national and international level, an architecture student at the end of the 1970s and winner of the National Comic Prize in 2013, is the focus of the article. The fundamental objective is to analyse the links between his graphic narrative and architecture, organizing the investigation into several interrelated sections. For this, representative drawings are considered in which a singular treatment of perspective is observed, as well as references to the cinema or to rural and urban settings of Galician architecture. In his work, as another character in the plots, more than a background, architecture has a great role. The knowledge previously acquired in subjects of Architectural Graphics area underlies his works, especially in the elaboration of perspectives whose rules he applies or transgresses depending on the specific treatment of each story.
This article delves into the resolution of the practical order foundations used by Mies van der Rohe in his work. The research contrasts the principles derived from the study of his private library, and the graphic analysis to the project schemes and final plans of milestones of his work to resolve the hypothesis.
The medieval civilization defines a canon on the concept of practical order for Mies, as it merges, at a spiritual level, the structure of his time and the architecture he produced. Similar to medieval master builders, who safeguarded their knowledge as a professional secret, Mies kept his design method as a mystery that is discerned through this research. It unveils what would be the perfect geometric system that combines quadrature, triangulation, and a harmony diagram, through which the geometric configurations of both medieval and modern architecture by Mies are resolved.
