    Get PDF
This article examines mobility in the Roman mining micro-region of Almadén, focusing on the road networks that facilitated the extraction and transport of cinnabar (minium). This region is located in the southeastern part of the province of Ciudad Real, bordering the provinces of Badajoz and Córdoba. Through an interdisciplinary approach, combining historical and archaeological analysis with Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, the authors reconstruct the secondary mobility network and examine its role in the territorial and economic organisation of the region during the Roman period. The research employs the MADO (Optimal Displacement Accumulation Model) and GIS technologies to simulate the routes that connected mining centres to major distribution hubs, such as Córdoba, through primary routes like the Corduba-Sisapo road. The study integrates several datasets, including topographical analyses, ancient literary sources, and archaeological findings, to determine plausible paths for the transport of cinnabar. The findings highlight the strategic significance of ‘Cerro de las Monas’, identified as a crucial node within the secondary road network. This site’s prominence is supported by its advantageous location, proximity to mining centres, and the archaeological remains indicative of its role in facilitating cinnabar transport. In addition, the study explores the wider settlement hierarchy in the region, with Sisapo standing out as the administrative and logistical hub for cinnabar production and distribution. This settlement probably played a pivotal role in controlling regional mobility and overseeing resource management. The research demonstrates how settlements such as ‘Cerro de las Monas’ and Sisapo functioned collaboratively to optimise cinnabar extraction and distribution. Sisapo’s position as the mining capital of Hispania consolidated its role in connecting local and imperial economic networks. From Sisapo, cinnabar would have reached Córdoba, where it was integrated into the larger Roman transport system, enabling its distribution across the Empire. Methodologically, the use of the MADO is particularly valuable to study areas where primary infrastructure left minimal physical traces. By simulating optimal routes based on topography, resource accessibility, and distances between settlements, this approach offers a new way to reconstruct mobility systems in historically complex landscapes. Additionally, GIS technology contributes to a comprehensive visualisation of the landscape, enhancing our understanding of how mobility networks evolved and operated within their historical contexts. These digital tools not only allow the reconstruction of ancient routes but also provide a framework for exploring human-environment interactions and the socio-economic dynamics of Roman mining regions. This article also reflects on the broader implications of network analysis in archaeology, particularly its potential to explore the intersection of human activities and natural landscapes. By applying these methods to the Almadén mining micro-region, the research offers a case study that underscores the importance of integrating digital tools with traditional archaeological approaches. The insights gained here can serve as a methodological reference for future studies focused on mobility, resource management, and territorial organisation in other Roman provinces. Finally, the article situates the Almadén mining region within the broader economic framework of the Roman Empire. Hispania's ability to efficiently manage cinnabar extraction and transport solidified its position as a vital supplier of mercury. The research underlines the value of hierarchical resource management in sustaining the economy and demonstrates how local dynamics in mining regions could influence larger imperial systems. In conclusion, this study underscores the worth of interdisciplinary approaches for understanding mobility networks in mining regions. By reconstructing the infrastructure and logistics of the Almadén region, it contributes not only to the historical understanding of Roman Hispania but also to the methodological advancement of landscape archaeology. The results of this research provide a foundation for comparative studies in Roman mining and mobility systems, offering new perspectives on natural resources organisation and exploitation in the ancient world.

The research tackles the study, publication, and hypothetical three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of a mudbrick construction from the Ptolemaic period, situated within a Hellenistic sanctuary at Hermopolis Magna in Middle Egypt. The sanctuary site was excavated in 1945 by Rizkallah Makramallah, a former lecturer at Alexandria University, whose findings remained largely unpublished and obscure until the present study. This study enhances our understanding of the reconstruction potential of the mudbrick construction, proposed as a lost Hellenistic altar, in relation to the broader sanctuary complex. Furthermore, it elucidates the architectural and spatial planning dynamics between Hellenistic sanctuaries at Hermopolis Magna and Alexandria; this provides novel comparative insights into the religious, civic, and ceremonial functionalities of such monuments throughout the Ptolemaic period. With the inaugural academic publication of Makramallah’s excavation findings, derived from his photographic archives now preserved at the British Museum, the Hermopolis Magna sanctuary is reconstructed with enhanced detail and coherence, significantly transforming scholarly interpretations of both the monument and its functional context. The significant challenges faced included the absence of field notes, architectural drawings, or published plans; thus, it was necessary to rely on meticulous visual analyses of the photographic evidence captured from multiple perspectives and in different preservation conditions. These images underwent interpretative and comparative scrutiny; they were integrated into advanced 2D and 3D digital modelling software to reconstruct the monument's form, proportions, layout, and architectural characteristics. The reconstructed structure is subsequently examined in relation to typologically analogous Hellenistic altars discovered in Egypt, mainland Greece, and Asia Minor. This multidisciplinary approach not only revitalises an overlooked aspect of the sanctuary, but also enhances the broader understanding of the topographical, urban, and religious landscapes of Hermopolis Magna during the Graeco-Roman period. This research also proposes novel hypotheses concerning spatial organisation, monumentality, cultic accessibility, and ritual practices within provincial Ptolemaic sacred architecture.

Intelligent (but artificial) Feedback in Spanish as a Foreign Language: Evaluation of ChatGPT and Claude as Text Correction Tools

    Get PDF
This research analyses the potential and limitations of two artificial intelligence models (ChatGPT 4 and Claude 3.7) as feedback tools for texts written by students of Spanish as a foreign language. Using selected texts from the CEDEL2 corpus, the study evaluates these models' ability to provide pedagogically appropriate corrections. The qualitative analysis focuses on four criteria: accuracy in error detection, clarity of explanations, pedagogical adequacy, and potential problems. Results reveal that both models show high precision in detecting basic errors but present significant limitations such as overcorrection and difficulties adapting explanations to the student's level. Claude stands out for its systematic structure, while ChatGPT excels in humanizing feedback. Based on these findings, we propose an integrated model to implement these tools in the Spanish language classroom, where the teacher maintains a crucial role as mediator, and we offer practical recommendations to maximize their benefits while minimizing their risks

Between waiting and project: a comparative assessment of eight meanwhile urbanism

    Get PDF
This article defines temporary urbanism as a set of practices that activate vacant land by testing programs, rules, and alliances before their consolidation. It distinguishes between two main interpretations: the first, “meanwhile urbanism,” seeks to provide a solution during the transitional period in an interrupted urban process by assigning temporary uses and activities until the planned future development takes place. The second approach views time as a process of adaptation and demonstration to reach a more robust and community-driven consensus. Focusing on “meanwhile urbanism,” the study analyses eight European case studies and identifies four main typologies: 1. Community-led participatory uses on small plots; 2. Interventions creating temporary recreational spaces with environmental and educational value; 3. Projects using modular infrastructures to address equipment or service deficits; 4. Large-scale developments incorporating temporary uses to maintain social engagement during long-term implementation. The results confirms that community participation, flexible design, and local appropriation are critical to strengthening social fabric and place identity. These interventions, varying greatly in duration, demonstrate that interim uses can adapt without obstructing final projects. The article concludes that temporary urbanism should be regarded as a dynamic complement to formal urban planning and could be very useful in Valencian Community where extensive undeveloped lands exist

Higher education institutions have diversified their educational offerings through virtual modalities in order to meet the demand for flexible learning environments and enhanced use of digital technologies. However, this modality entails specific pedagogical challenges that became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in relation to assessment practices and academic support. In this context, the present study examines the academic performance of students enrolled in virtual courses delivered in 2024 at the Faculty of Languages, Tijuana campus, of the Autonomous University of Baja California. The analysis considers faculty training level, the feedback provided by teachers, and the interactions implemented within the institutional learning platform as key analytical factors. A quantitative study with an explanatory–correlational scope was conducted, analyzing data from 662 undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor’s Degree in Language Teaching, distributed across 33 courses taught by 22 instructors. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and correlation tests were employed. The findings indicate that faculty training level, measured by the number of professional development courses completed, did not show a statistically significant relationship with academic performance. In contrast, teacher-provided feedback emerged as a determining factor, as significant differences in students’ academic performance were observed. These findings highlight the importance of prioritizing pedagogical practices focused on formative feedback and learning support in virtual environments, providing relevant empirical evidence to inform institutional decision-making aimed at improving educational quality in higher education.

This study explored the beliefs, experiences, and self-perception of competencies among second-year Psychology students at the University of Barcelona regarding academic writing. An online questionnaire was administered to students from all groups enrolled in the compulsory course "Child Development" during the 2024–2025 academic year and was completed by 63.33% of the enrolled students (N=171). The questionnaire included both Likert-scale and open-ended questions about beliefs regarding the functions and characteristics of academic writing, experience with academic writing at university, and self-perception of competencies. Students valued reflection and learning as important functions of academic writing, while they perceived that the instructors assigned less importance to these elements. As defining characteristics of academic writing,  they prioritized clarity and coherence in writing but considered the use of technical vocabulary, academic style, and citation and referencing norms to be less important _areas in which they also felt less competent. They reported having more experience with group writing than individual writing, perceived differences between group and individual writing, and identified specific challenges related to collaborative writing. They showed a positive self-perception of their academic writing skills but considered that they would need more practice and training to improve them. The results revealed both alignments and discrepancies between students’ perceived competencies and the difficulties identified by teachers in previous studies. Technical-academic features of writing, the challenges of collaborative writing, and argumentation skills were identified as key areas to address in future teaching improvement initiatives.

The royal palace at the Mechouar citadel in Tlemcen (Algeria): from excavation to reconstruction

    Get PDF
Since independence, Algeria has devoted particular attention to its architectural heritage by enacting legislation aimed at its protection and preservation against threats that could lead to its disappearance. Among the most significant is Law No. 98-04 on the Protection of Cultural Heritage (1998), along with subsequent complementary regulatory texts. Within this framework, extensive programs for the restoration of historical landmarks have been launched across various regions of the country. The city of Tlemcen has notably distinguished itself as one of the main urban centers to experience a significant wave of restoration works, especially during 2010 and 2011 in preparation for the “Tlemcen, Capital of Islamic Culture 2011” event. Among the most prominent of these projects is the reconstruction of the Royal Palace at the Mechouar Citadel, which represented a unique intervention on an archaeological and architectural site of this scale. This study aims to trace the trajectory of the palace from the archaeological excavations that uncovered its remains to its eventual reconstruction, while providing a critical analysis of this experience in terms of methodology and outcomes. The goal is to contribute to the scholarly discussion on the challenges and implications of reconstruction as a strategy for the preservation of architectural heritage in Algeria
