This paper takes part in a research project on teacher training for intercultural competence. Our objective is to understand whether or not the teachers are able to manage the diversity of the school population in order to fight against discrimination and offer equal opportunities. The first stage of this project, which is the subject of this paper, aims to identify international trends in the field of intercultural approaches in teacher training in Europe. To achieve this, we have analyzed the discourse of three international organizations (OECD, Council of Europe and UNESCO) and we will present our first results that focus on culturally appropriate teaching. We will also highlight the tensions and questions related to the recommendations of the three organizations.
Two hits in one – the neurobiology of schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is widely thought to involve the disruption of both early and late phases of brain development – the so-called ‘two-hit’ hypothesis – but what is the biology behind these two hits? Studying genetic changes contributing to risk for the disorder, we uncovered surprising links between the biological pathways involved in early and late hits
Can CBD help to combat COVID variants?
There is an urgent need to find new treatments that complement the use of vaccines and antiviral drugs to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Our interdisciplinary research team uncovered evidence that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound produced by cannabis plants, has the potential to inhibit SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID
Solving A Decade-Long Mystery: Neurons Hold The Key To Rare Neurological Diseases
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia are devastating neurological diseases. Yet, there is no effective treatment for them. We uncovered a genetic cause of these diseases leading to a cryptic process in neurons caused by a malfunctioning protein. Our finding might help provide a potential new therapy for such neurological diseases.
A crystalline silicon string played with hours-long sustain
We have developed nanoscale guitar strings with extremely low energy dissipation, using silicon under stress. The exceptional lifetime of these mechanical oscillators makes them perfect tools to sense minuscule forces in their environment, and to explore how quantum mechanics can apply to macroscopic objects
Do our marine highways disrupt blue whale habitats?
Using dedicated surveys and data from satellite tags, we identified areas where blue whales concentrate in Chilean Patagonia. We show that the main vessel traffic corridor highly overlaps with these areas, where higher risk of negative interactions between vessels and whales is to be expected, and that the aquaculture fleet is, by far, the largest and most densely distributed fleet in the area.
Drought may have prompted the Vikings’ departure from Greenland
The reason why the Vikings left Greenland in the early 15th century remains unclear. The declining temperature during the Little Ice Age had been thought to be one of the important factors. However, new evidence suggests that increasingly dry conditions played a more important role in undermining the viability of the Norse Settlement than minor temperature changes
Engineered probiotic boosts cancer therapy
Nowadays, one of the main treatments for cancer is cancer immunotherapy. This therapy boosts a patient\u27s immune system to fight cancer. A recent study attempts to help more patients benefit from this therapy, by engineering a probiotic to boost the effect of cancer immunotherapy
