This article focuses on two activist publications that played a decisive role in the history of national language printing in Senegal: a syllabary printed in Grenoble in 1959 (Ijjib Volof) and a newspaper (Kàddu) self-published in Dakar in the 1970s. These two publications, produced in different political circumstances by FEANF students in France (Ijjib Volof) and in Senegalese opposition circles (Kàddu), testify to the persistence before and after independence of a project for the development of national languages whose discontinuous history is marked by the legacy of Cheikh Anta Diop.L’article s’intéresse à deux publications militantes qui ont joué un rôle décisif dans l’histoire de l’imprimé en langues nationales au Sénégal : un syllabaire imprimé à Grenoble en 1959 (Ijjib Volof) et un journal (Kàddu) autoédité à Dakar dans les années 1970.
Thirty million children are out of school in Sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, apart from formal education, educational alternatives are developed, particularly in West Africa. How educational alternatives can provide a response to the large number of children and young people out of school? The experiences of the NGO Aide et Action International in educational alternatives adopt an approach of an integrated school in the community and are available in two forms: the return to school, generally for children aiming to be integrated to the formal school, and youth training and professional integration. Building from the concepts of “non formal education” and “alternative education” the paper shows that educational alternatives for out of school people supported by Aide et Action International got positive results in meeting the educational needs of beneficiaries, and the effective integration of learners in the workplace. These educational responses are relevant because of bringing supply and demand, responding to local conditions, meeting the needs of the group targets and promoting educational alternatives.
During a mission as an external Examiner at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), I had the opportunity to question the status of languages and the representations of Western cultures, and how they influence the learning of European languages, particularly in higher education. I first analysed the new B.A. degree for French Language and Linguistics, more specifically the internal coherence between the teaching and the examinations. Secondly, I looked at the national recruiting criteria for students in Western languages.
This analysis encouraged me to better understand the whole institutional system with its hidden agenda. I therefore reflected on the ethnocutural governmental policy instituting a new categorisation of majority and minorities, being based on an inversion of domination relationship following a binary cultural opposition model. I also questioned the recomposition of the Malaysian society into ethnoclasses and its consecutive new social and economic hierarchies as well as its impact on the institutional behaviour of its actors. As a conclusion, I think that an external expertise in the field of languages must take into account the analysis of the embeddedness of educational micro-structures into socio-political macro-structures and of their interrelations. It also requires a systemic approach which integrates the historical, political, social and economic factors, in order to identify the symbolic meanings and the political challenges of these identitary redefinitions, impulsed by a State, of the indigenous We versus an ethnic Other.
Recent international statements on the rights of children as well as paradigm shifts for inclusive education are leading to reflection on the consideration of students’ perspectives at school. This article aims to question the place of student voices in the initial training of future teachers. Examples from two ethnographic research carried out with autistic secondary and preschool pupils allow us to reflect on the discursive space given to students in class and the real consideration of what they express. The analysis makes it possible to identify ways to incorporate students’ voices into initial training and show their importance in teaching practice. The heterogeneity of students\u27 means of expression, as well as viewpoints, lead to caution regarding uniform interventions. The results illustrate the need to go beyond a logic of comparison to the norm, and instead draw positive portraits of students who show their abilities. The results also contribute to question the representations that future teacher in training have of students’ difficulties.
Plant genetic engineering makes treasure from trash
We have seen in recent years a massive leap forward in plant genetic engineering which holds great promise for future plant breeding. However, the genes that steer the plant’s powerhouses had resisted our attempts to change them. We tried a technique that had fallen out of favour in the last decade, and we unexpectedly discovered an efficient and valuable tool
How memory helps plants survive climate change
Do plants have a memory? Surprisingly enough, they do. But this is not the type of memory that we share. In plants, it serves more as a tool for survival when a hostile environment threatens their growth. To dig into their world, we studied how wild strawberries adapt to different temperatures using their environmental memory, the mysteries of which are yet to be fully understood
Cities threaten global biodiversity but could also help sustain it.
Over the next 30 years, the expansion of cities will threaten global biodiversity unless we change the way that they are built. Greener cities can become part of the solution to the global biodiversity crisis.
How platelets pull the strings
Without platelets, humans might have bled to death even with the tiniest of wounds. But is their only function to stop blood loss? New results suggest that they could also help in starting to heal a wound by forming new specialized tissue. These findings pave the way for improvements in implanted medical devices and treatment options for those suffering from frequent bleeding
