Salmon evolve quickly as a response to intense harvesting of their prey
To persist in the face of climate change and human activities, organisms may need to adapt. We showed that Atlantic salmon from River Teno (between Finland & Norway) evolved over the last 40 years to mature earlier. Our data suggest it was due to indirect and direct effects of fishing: harvesting of capelin to feed farmed animals, and size selective net fishing in the river
Prickly prospects for cacti under climate change
The common perception of cacti as heat- and drought-loving desert plants causes climate change to be overlooked as a potential threat to their conservation. Our work forecasting the distribution of cacti under various climate change scenarios reveals that a majority of species will lose suitable habitat. Agriculture and climate change driving worldwide insect declines
Insects are a key part of the earth’s life support system, making reports of steep declines a great concern. Our study, one of the largest assessments of insect biodiversity to date, identifies climate change and intensive agriculture as key drivers of declines. We show that declines are most profound when these drivers are combined, but that preserving natural habitat can protect against loss
Gut microbiota drive anti-viral immunity
We investigated how the gut microbiota modulate anti-viral immunity in mouse models of infection. We showed that gut bacteria are vital for the presence of low level of type-I interferons, key mediators in anti-viral immunity. The gut bacteria deliver DNA in vesicles to host cells, priming anti-viral immunity

We analysed ancient Scandinavian genomes over 2,000 years, revealing Viking-era influx from southern Europe, British-Irish Isles, and the east Baltic. Genetic diversity increased during that time, but later Scandinavians have less non-local ancestry. Uralic ancestry found 1,000 years ago still impacts northern Scandinavians
