#WhatBritishMuslimsReallyThink: Negotiating Religious and National Identity on Twitter

    No full text
In the discursive construction of intra-national sameness, religious identity is often a key criterion for inclusion or exclusion from the imagined national community. In today's Europe, the boundaries of individual nations are increasingly secured by applying a logic characteristic of Islamophobia and cultural racism. Therefore, the negotiation of Muslim identity and its intersection with the respective national identity category is of particular interest. In this study, the Twitter hashtag #WhatBritishMuslimsReallyThink was examined in order to analyze how members of the British Muslim digital community both construct and reinforce their collective identity as well as employ discursive strategies to negotiate British national identity and their national belonging in the face of exclusionary political rhetoric. Drawing on a corpus of 480 tweets containing the hashtag #WhatBritishMuslimsReallyThink, a mixed-method content analysis approach was employed to analyze the topics and strategies present in the hashtag discourse. Thereby, the issues addressed and the strategies of belonging employed in the Twitter conversation are embedded in a larger public discourse on British national identity and intra-national boundary making. This research investigates Twitter as a site of national and religious identity construction and sheds light on the contested nature of such identity categories

Quasi-Religion and the German Ersatzreligion are frequently used terms in everyday language and media as well as in academic literature. Still, they are hardly reflected or clearly defined categories. Therefore, this paper aims to critically investigate the category »Ersatz-/Quasi-Religion« based on its historization. Using ideas from Ernesto Laclau’s and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory and Michel Foucault’s genealogy, many publications on »Ersatz-/Quasi-Religion« were examined in order to uncover hidden presumptions and interests. The historical-critical reconstruction of the discourse shows how unity and identity of the category »Ersatz-/Quasi-Religion« were and are materialized into social reality only through naming and repetition, in which effects of power always play an important role. In addition, it is shown that first members of the churches and theologians have created the category in a situation of competition and fear. Then, other disciplines, especially the sociology of religion, adopted this hegemonic closure in order to secure their own position and concepts. Finally, the article pleads for research within the subject of Religious Studies on the category »Ersatz-/Quasi-Religion« based on a conceptualization as it is proposed by the author in order to gain knowledge on the constitution of »religion«

Riding, Roping, Resurrected. When Christianity meets Horsemanship: A Case Study of Christian Cowboys in Kansas, US.

Very few pictures are as closely associated with the image of the United States as that of the roping Cowboy on horseback, driving cattle through the prairie. Hence, it is commonly said that the United States is the homeland of the Cowboy culture. America is also known for its fluidity and diversity within the religious field. However, if we take a closer look at Christianity in the US, it is highly significant that especially Evangelicals make up many Christians in the US. This is mainly because evangelicals, despite a conservative outlook, are known to use modern technologies to achieve, among other things, the goal of evangelization. The target groups also include subcultures, most of whom are not religious. In the case of this article, the focused subculture involves those who strongly identify with the Cowboy figure, hence mostly the white lower and American middle class living in the suburbs or the country. This outreach was quite successful, as, at the beginning of the 2000s, so-called Cowboy Churches sprouted up in the Midwest and the southern states of America. This article will use two case studies to illustrate the problems that occur when reaching out to a very freedom-loving, individualistic, and patriotic subculture and how challenging it can be when evangelicals use popular culture and media to achieve the goal of evangelization

Population ≠ Populism = Populism: Asserting Populism through Negating Populism from the Standpoint of el pueblo

    No full text
This article examines the concept of populism by reevaluating its historical and theoretical dimensions, particularly through the lens of the neglected periphery. Drawing on the philosophies of Miki Kiyoshi, Tosaka Jun, and Enrique Dussel, the study critiques the conventional portrayal of populism as a regressive force, exploring its potential to serve as a transformative tool for marginalized communities. By integrating the Kyoto School’s dialectical logic with Dussel’s concept of el pueblo, the article develops a framework for asserting populist movements while resisting reification and hegemonic tendencies. It emphasizes the importance of myths as tools for fostering collective resistance and transformative praxis, advocating for a continuous process of self-negation to ensure inclusivity and prevent ideological capture. Through this cross-cultural philosophical synthesis, the article proposes a re-paradigm of populism that aligns with democratic empowerment and the decentralization of political power, creating a more equitable and pluralistic socio-political order

L’«altro» Come essere umano pieno. Un urgente bisogno di «rispetto reciproco»: sulle tracce di Richard Sennett: The “other” as a full human being: an urgent need for mutual respect, following in the foothsteps of Richard Sennett

The London sociologist Richard Sennett, in his essay Respect in a World of Inequality, offers a unique reflection on speaking about the “subject,” beginning with “respect” and developing the complicated relation between society and character, autonomy and dependence, solidarity and compassion, and finally, between subjects and educational institutions. A mapping of anthropological space emerges, beginning from a path of recognizing the other - different and foreign - “as a full human being,” unique and concrete, and necessary for the actualization of one’s Self.
