    Use of high-fidelity simulation in advancing palliative care skills in nursing students : a convergent mixed methods study

    Objective: High-fidelity simulation (HFS) has positive effects on different learning outcomes in nursing education. The aim of the study was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the added value of HFS building on traditional learning methods in the development of self-efficacy in Bachelor of Science in Nursing students caring for adult patients and their families in early palliative situations. Methods: A convergent mixed methods study was conducted. In the quantitative study section, a quasi-experimental, repeated measures design was applied measuring self-efficacy using the Self-Efficacy-Subscale of the Bonner Palliativwissenstest (BPW) and the Family Nursing Practice Scale (FNPS). In the qualitative study section, a qualitative descriptive study design was applied. Mixed methods meta-inferences were generated by a joint display table. Results: The added value of HFS concerning strengthening nursing student’s self-efficacy in early palliative care and family systems care was confirmed. The expanded findings were the strengths of HFS with the possibility for students to reflect on their performance and synthesize new insights, as well as the importance of students’ practical experience to integrate family systems care in symptom management

    Machine interpreting to achieve social and economic SDGs? A use case for refugee communication in Switzerland

    This project explores how machine interpreting apps can aid communication between employees of institutions and refugees in Switzerland. With around 15,000 refugees arriving annually to the country, language barriers pose significant challenges. Interpreting services are costly, and volunteers for less common languages are scarce. The study assesses the potential and problems of conducting a full conversation between a migrant and a response worker using only Microsoft Translator. We conducted semi-guided interviews to map the needs and expectations of institution employees and used case simulations to evaluate the practicability and the impact of machine interpreting on the conversation. Despite accuracy issues, migrants felt empowered and had a better conversation control. Yet nonverbal aspects hint towards new emerging turn-taking practices for machine interpreted conversations. This latter point should be further investigated

    Empowering sustainable tourism mobility through multimodal transportation in rural areas

    The mobility sector is a major contributor to climate change in Switzerland which is mostly due to its high reliance on private passenger cars. While initiatives, policies and alternative mobility solutions aimed at promoting car reduction are growing in urban areas, rural regions, which face unique challenges due to higher car dependency and limited alternatives, are lagging behind. This paper investigates current mobility behaviour, needs, and attitudes towards new mobility services in rural regions focusing on the Swiss touristic region of Toggenburg. A survey conducted among tourists (N = 572) travelling to Toggenburg identifies several key determinants influencing car use reduction. In particular, it reveals that women, low-income households and resident of more urban areas tend to be more receptive to the idea of reducing their car use. Other factors contributing to this receptiveness include biospheric and egoistic values, as well as the availability and affordability of alternative transportation options, such as car sharing or on-demand services

    Expansion of induced pluripotent stem cells under consideration of bioengineering aspects : part 2

    The manufacturing of allogeneic cell therapeutics based on human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) holds considerable potential to revolutionize the accessibility and affordability of modern healthcare. However, achieving the cell yields necessary to ensure robust production hinges on identifying suitable and scalable single-use (SU) bioreactor systems. While specific stirred SU bioreactor types have demonstrated proficiency in supporting hiPSC expansion at L-scale, others, notably instrumented SU multiplate and fixed-bed bioreactors, remain relatively unexplored. By characterizing these bioreactors using both computational fluid dynamics and experimental bioengineering methods, operating ranges were identified for the Xpansion® 10 and Ascent™ 1 m2 bioreactors in which satisfactory hiPSC expansion under serum-free conditions was achieved. These operating ranges were shown not only to effectively limit cell exposure to wall shear stress but also facilitated sufficient oxygen transfer and mixing. Through their application, almost 5 × 109 viable cells could be produced within 5 days, achieving expansion factors of up to 35 without discernable impact on cell viability, identity, or differentiation potential

    Evaluation of usability, feasibility and acceptance of the digital training diary Trainingslog for individuals with axSpA : a mixed-method study

    Background: Physical activity (PA), including regular exercise, is essential for the successful management of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). To promote a physically active lifestyle, a digital training diary (Trainingslog) was developed in an user-centered approach by the Swiss Ankylosing Spondylitis Association (SVMB). A training diary promotes PA through feedback, goal setting and self-monitoring, which can also be used for PA counselling by physiotherapists (PT). Usability, feasibility and acceptance are essential for the successful implementation of a mobile Health Intervention such as the Trainingslog. The study objective is to evaluate the usability, feasibility and acceptance of the Trainingslog for individuals with axSpA and PTs. Methods: A mixed-methods design was performed among potential end-users of the Trainingslog. Quantitative data was collected by use of questionnaires (System Usability Scale (SUS, 0-100 scale), user version of the Mobile App Rating Scale (uMARS, 5 point scale)) and number of training entries. Subsequently, qualitative data was gathered through semi-structured online focus groups or individual interviews. Results: 11 PTs (9 women, mean age 52.5 [SD 15.6]) and 10 individuals with axSpA (6 women, mean age 48 [SD 13.4]) participated. The quantitative data showed mean SUS scores for usability of 82.5 [SD 21.76] for PTs and 77.0 [SD 9.34] for individuals with axSpA. The mean uMARS sector B scores for feasibility were 4.2 [SD 0.49] for PTs and 4.1 [SD 0.38] for individuals with axSpA. Acceptance, as indicated by the uMARS results (mean score > 3 in Sectors E and F for both groups), was given. But there was a lower-than-expected agreement in the training entries, with 59.86% of entries matching between the Trainingslog and the paper diary. The qualitative analysis unveiled that while usability and feasibility were good, acceptance was lower, primarily due to the use of a web-based link instead of an app version. Conclusion: The Trainingslog showed a good usability and feasibility, while the acceptance was lower than expected. Acceptance could be increased by offering the Trainingslog as an app-based version, along with implementing additional recommendations for enhancement. Consequently, the Trainingslog has the potential to be applied in PA counselling by PTs or as a self-monitoring tool for individuals with axSpA

    This article explores the enduring significance of subterranean resources (e.g. coal and iron ore) in shaping the identity, culture, and resilience of communities in South Wales. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, it highlights how the region's industrial heritage, particularly its mining and steel production, has left a lasting imprint on the social fabric. As deindustrialisation continues, including the recent closure of blast furnaces in Port Talbot, residents navigate the loss of economic security and the erosion of their material connection to the land. Yet, this process is met with both mourning and adaptation. Through narratives of pride, solidarity, and memory, communities reassert their identity and seek new ways of reconnecting with the land, including grassroots initiatives that renew bonds with place and environment. The article reflects on how these human-material relationships can inform more just and sustainable futures in post-industrial regions

    Scrooge : detection of changes in web applications to enhance security testing

    Due to the complexity of modern web applications, security testing is a time-consuming process that heavily relies on manual interaction with various analysis tools. This process often needs to be repeated for newer versions of previously tested applications, as new functionalities frequently introduce security vulnerabilities. This paper introduces scrooge, a tool that automates change detection in web application functionality to enhance the efficiency and focus of the security testing process. We evaluate scrooge on various platforms, demonstrating its ability to reliably detect a range of changes. Scrooge successfully identifies different types of changes, showcasing its applicability across diverse scenarios with high accuracy
