    On IoT-enabled risk prevention and insurance : a systematic literature review

    The insurance market is increasingly adopting connected insurance offerings, such as telematics, wearables, and parametric products, enabled by Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. These innovations generate granular, observable risk data and support the delivery of preventive services. While connected insurance has gained research attention, the role of IoT-enabled prevention and its impact on insurance, in particular on demand, remain underexplored. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic literature review following the PRISMA guidelines. From 5764 records identified across databases, journals, and industry sources, we analyzed 56 academic and 18 practitioner studies. The results include a comprehensive analysis of how IoT expands risk prevention and insurance mechanisms, as well as the additional benefits and costs introduced to connected insurance solutions, such as discounts, rewards, real-time services, technology expenses, privacy loss, and cyber risks. This evolution makes the cost–benefit structure broader and more complicated and introduces new drivers of insurance demand, such as technology affinity and the willingness to share data. We argue that existing demand models should be revisited to reflect these dynamics and outline implications for insurers' evolving role, from risk financiers to partners in risk management

    Acute adrenal suppression following resistance training in elite female athletes : a comprehensive steroid profile

    Aim: This prospective observational study aimed to evaluate acute adrenal-derived hormonal responses and training performance in elite female athletes during resistance training with respect to the female cycle. Methods: In 19 elite female athletes, acute hormonal responses to resistance training were examined over four weeks, measured before and 60 min after exercise. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry provided a comprehensive steroid profile, including classical and adrenal-specific 11-oxygenated androgens. Performance metrics were tracked using a velocity-based training method. Results: Sixty minutes after resistance training, significant acute changes in steroid hormone concentrations were observed. Levels of 11β-hydroxyandrostenedione (11OHA4) (−0.707 nmol/L; p = 0.012, −20.0%), androsterone (−0.201 nmol/L; p = 0.049, −14.8%), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) (−3.813 nmol/L; p = 0.006, −17.1%) decreased significantly. The total sum of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and bioactive androgens decreased. No significant differences in absolute or relative velocity loss and estimated one-repetition maximum were observed, suggesting comparable strength and fatigue across menstrual cycle phases. Conclusions: The observed post-exercise decline in glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and androgens such as DHEA indicates a coordinated acute suppression of adrenal steroidogenesis in response to resistance training in female elite athletes.     Towards indigenising Philippine concepts of disability : a phenomenology of disability among the Ayta Sambal

    This article explores the intersectionality of disability, Indigenous culture, and education in an Ayta Sambal community in Zambales, Philippines. Using a descriptive phenomenological approach incorporating in-depth interviews, informal dialogues, participant observation, and focus group discussions, insights are collected from Ayta students, families, educators, and community leaders. The findings reveal multifaceted notions of disability among Ayta learners: from feelings of otherness to learning challenges and vulnerability to bullying. Disability is often downplayed when individuals contribute to communal responsibilities, while socially disruptive behaviours are viewed as more disabling. These perceptions are shaped by biomedical, socioeconomic, spiritual, and poverty-related factors. In sum, the study engenders culturally sensitive and inclusive education frameworks, community-based disability support systems, and the decolonisation of educational policies and practices to intentionally address the needs of Indigenous learners with disability

    The snapshot project : using vignettes to understand community mobility through the lens of intersectionality

    Translating research findings into something that can be used for learning and teaching of complex concepts, can increase the impact of a research project and influence societal change. In this project, researchers from three countries collaborated to develop a series of vignettes that illustrated intersecting experiences of discrimination and participation restriction for people with disabilities and older people. Vignettes are short, first or third-person stories, that capture the meanings found in research conducted in these diverse contexts. We focussed specifically on community mobility as an everyday activity where intersectionality is experienced. This is an area in which the group have conducted research with diverse populations. In May and August 2024 we conducted World Café-style workshops with health and social care students and professionals from a range of disciplines, in Sweden and South Africa. This case study addresses the methodological and practical challenges we faced in i) creating vignettes based on our previous research, ii) creating a World Café-style workshop to facilitate discussion on the vignettes, and iii) collaborating within an international team that spans three countries, seven institutions, and includes 15 members speaking six different home languages. We found vignettes are a feasible way for participants to gain a more nuanced understanding of intersectionality, and to facilitate interprofessional discussion among students and healthcare professionals. Vignettes can be created using previous research findings mirroring international contexts. Vignettes are also useful in amplifying participants’ voices, increasing representation, and capturing the complexity of simultaneously oppressive situations

    Carbocation scavenger enhanced pretreatment of wood for enzymatic saccharification : experimental study and review

    The suppression of lignin repolymerization by carbocation scavengers in lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment improves both the bioconversion of cellulose and the quality of the obtained lignin. However, the effects of the various known scavenger compounds on the enzymatic cellulose saccharification of different biomass substrates have not yet been systematically investigated. We reviewed the effects of the frequently studied pretreatment additives 2-naphthol, 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate, mannitol and syringic acid on the pretreatment of different wood species. The review shows that carbocation scavengers can be effective for enhancing the pretreatment of various soft- and hardwoods. The reported effects on enhancing cellulose bioconversion are however very case specific, depending on pretreatment additive, biomass species, pretreatment method, and other factors. Therefore, it is not possible to specify a single best additive for the pretreatment of woody biomass, but it should be selected specifically for each individual case. This insight was further confirmed by a complementary experimental study of the mentioned compounds in the autohydrolysis pretreatment of softwood (spruce) and hardwood (beech). 2-Naphthol-7-sulfonate proved very effective for enhancing both the enzymatic saccharification of softwood and hardwood cellulose. 2-Naphthol improved the pretreatment of softwood, but was hardly effective for hardwood. Vice versa, mannitol and syringic acid enhanced hardwood pretreatment, but were not effective for softwood. An analysis of the additive consumption in autohydrolysis pretreatment further revealed that the aromatic compounds 2-naphthol, 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate and syringic acid are highly reactive, reaching a consumption of 86–100 % in spruce and 71.9–97.7 % in beech pretreatment, whereas mannitol was hardly consumed
