Be Pragmatic, Demand the Unintended! Designing Interventions in the Ethnographic Research of Social Exclusion
The present paper intends to follow the debate on applied research in Czech social sciences and presents the case of interdisciplinary research in Southern Slovakia. The authors frame their approach to the research field using the Deleuzian terms of virtuality and multiplicity to underline the processual character of both ethnography and the field itself. On this basis, we develop the argument that the social sciences always act ontologically through their performative nature, which is especially, but not exclusively, true for such applied research where intervention plays an integral part. We consider our intended actions according to the features of the so-called medium design to be desired interplays, which transfer our actions to other actors in our research field and within which we seek to improve the living conditions in a building of flats at risk of eviction. Such interventions carry unintended consequences, which we reflect on in the text and describe how we dealt with them. The mission is to consider engagement and intervention in terms of their public and practical addressability and to show that the use of knowledge outside of academics as being something implicit to the social sciences rather than a trendy extension of their scope
The Precarious Lives of Homeless Scavengers in Tokyo Before and After the 2008 Crisis
Awareness of poverty in Japan significantly increased after the bubble economy ended in 1991. The presence of older men, approaching or past retirement age, living in blue tents and on park benches, was one of the first to challenge the assumption of a classless Japan. One strategy for men experiencing homelessness to alleviate their hardships and survive is to gather and sell aluminium cans. This paper ethnographically explores their precarious work and documents the various patterns of gathering and selling cans, while also looking at the impact of both local and global forces (neoliberalism) on their work. Based on fieldwork that included the economic recession of 2008–2009, I observed six months of the work of the homeless during economic stability and six months during a severe recession. My research shows how homeless men used the work of gathering and selling cans to survive during a stagnant economy and then adapted to a brutal recession, which resulted in much lower income for their labour as the price of aluminium significantly decreased. I argue that their work was affected by the global economy and that collecting cans and earning money helped homeless men survive through the crisis. Finally, I conclude that earning money via selling cans allowed the men to maintain their self-respect and pride, have a sense of purpose, buy daily necessities, and occasionally splurge on entertainment
Fieldnotes from a Ukrainian Culture and Gastronomy Festival, 5 May 2022, Prague
These ethnographic fieldnotes focus on the place, sounds, and people of the Festival of Ukrainian Culture and Gastronomy at Prague Market (Pražská tržnice), in Prague, Czech Republic, on 5 May 2022, during the fullscale war in Ukraine. The observation reveals how the topic of war impacts thecultural and self identification of Ukrainians abroad, and how it affects social interactions inside and outside the group. The fieldnotes provide a panorama of multiple interpretations and productions of the Prague Market space and provides an opportunity to observe the ongoing process of the collective memory being generated through music

Aritmetika III - Změny číslic vedoucí k prvočíslům aneb variace na Bertrandův postulát
Prvočísla a otázky s nimi spojené představují často jedny z nejtěžších problémů matematiky a mnohé z nich zůstávají stále otevřené.
Circle-Based Pedagogy in a Multiethnic Environment
Jedná se o investigativní kruhy Paula Freireho, celkovou fyzickou odpověď Jamese Ashera a „kruhy“ – všechny tyto metody oceňují původní moudrost kultur studentů.As an experienced middle school teacher in the USA, Joe Provisor has worked for more than 30 years with students with a migrant background. In this article he discusses three resources which helped him and other teachers to deal with the complex educational issues of migrant students: Paulo Freire’s investigative circles, James Asher’s Total Physical Response, and ‘circles’ – all methods that value students’ inherent wisdom
