    No full text

    No full text
The acquisition of a second language in childhood is affected by several factors, including the age of onset, quantity and quality of language input, context of language use, and many more. The impact of these variables is observed in the size and quality of the language-specific lexicons. Therefore, successive bilingual children may show similar vocabulary deficits in their second language as children with lexical developmental deficits. It is necessary to differentiate between these two groups of children, because the latter group needs customized word finding therapy in both their languages, while for the former group, additional education in the second language might be sufficient. Various procedures for diagnosing word finding disorders were developed to fit the needs of bilingual children. In general, these developments are an improvement to standard procedures, but they still fail to accurately identify word finding disorders in bilingual children. However, assessing vocabulary capabilities is a worthwhile endeavor. Strengths and weaknesses can be identified and incorporated into additional language education

Facial and Bodily Expressions of Emotional Engagement: How Dynamic Measures Reflect the Use of Game Elements and Subjective Experience of Emotions and Effort

Users' emotional engagement in a task is important for performance and motivation. Non-intrusive, computerized process measures of engagement have the potential to provide fine-grained access to underlying affective states and processes. Thus, the current work brings together subjective measures (questionnaires) and objective process measures (facial expressions and head movements) of emotions to examine users' emotional engagement with respect to the absence or presence of game-elements. In particular, we randomly assigned 156 adult participants to either a spatial working memory task with or without game elements present, while their faces and head movements were recorded with a webcam during task execution. Positive and negative emotions were assessed before the task and twice during task execution using conventional questionnaires. We additionally examined whether perceived subjective effort, assumed to inherit a substantial affective component, manifests at a bodily expressive level alongside positive and negative emotions. Importantly, we explored the relationship between subjective and objective measures of emotions across the two tasks versions. We found a series of action units and head movements associated with the subjective experience of emotions as well as to subjective effort. Impacted by game elements, these associations often fit intuitively or lined up with findings from literature. As did a linear increase of blink (action unit 45) intensity relate to participants performing the task without game elements, presumably indicating disengagement in the more tedious task variant. On other occasions, associations between subjective and objective measures seemed indiscriminative or even contraindicated. Additionally, facial and bodily reactions and the resulting subjective-objective correspondences were rather consistent within, but not between the two task versions. Our work therefore both gains detailed access to automated emotion recognition and promotes its feasibility within research of game elements while highlighting the individuality and context dependency of emotional expressions

    Get PDF

New insights into visual-motor integration exploring process measures during copying shapes

    Get PDF
The link between visual-motor integration (VMI) and executive functions (EF) has been repeatedly documented in preschool children. VMI is often assessed using the Copy Design task measuring the product, thereby neglecting the processes that lead to a specific copy. Furthermore, EF are assumed to be mainly involved when a task is new. The involvement of EF after minimal practice in VMI, however, is unknown. Therefore, the present study investigated product- (i.e., accuracy) and process-based measures, namely velocity, and fluency, in five consecutive trials of copying shapes. Contributions of manual dexterity and EF to both VMI product and VMI processes across five trials were investigated in a sample of 5- to 6-year-old kindergarten children. Results revealed that children did not copy the shapes more accurately across the five trials, but quicker and more fluently. In line with previous findings, children's performance on VMI, manual dexterity, and EF were interrelated. The results indicate that over and above the copy's accuracy, also fluency of copying is a crucial indicator of VMI, which is related to EF and manual dexterity. Furthermore, findings on the VMI–EF link point to strong EF involvement during copying when the task is new and to a decreasing EF involvement with increasing practice, already after five trials. New insights into VMI in preschool children are discussed with regard to underlying cognitive processes

Background: Little is known about the sentence comprehension abilities of children speaking German as a second language. This applies especially to the German speaking cantons of Switzerland, where Swiss dialects dominate everyday communication. Aims: The aim is to examine the sentence comprehension abilities of children speaking (Swiss) German as a second language (GL2) in general compared to children speaking (Swiss) German as their first language (GL1). Methods: In a cross-sectional study 481 children have been assessed with the TROG-D and a Swiss German adaptation. By statistical matching, we compared 48 GL2 children with 48 GL1 children. The between-group differences were tested with t-tests for dependent samples. Results: When compared with the norm sample (t(47) = 8.875, p = <.001; Cohen’s d = 1.28) and with the Swiss control group (TROG-CH: t(47) = 8.039, p = <.001; Cohen’s d = 1.16; TROG-D: t(47) = 9.32, p = <.001; Cohen’s d = 1.35) children with GL2 show significantly lower results. Conclusion: The below average performance is a consequence of the circumstances of the second language acquisition and must not be confused with language comprehension disorders. Professionals working in (special) education need to be aware of this and act accordingly
