Imagine Yourself as a Media and Computer Science Teacher

    Get PDF
In order to investigate pre-service primary teachers’ mental images and beliefs about Media and Computer Science teaching, the Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist (DASTT-C) was adapted for the field of Media and Computer Science. For this explorative study, 78 student teachers were asked to imagine themselves as Media and Computer Science teacher before and after a methods seminar. Using a qualitative research approach and building upon the ideas of the Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist, the drawings before and after the course were coded. A coding scheme was developed, resulting in the Draw-A-Media-And-Computer-Science-Teacher Repository (DMECS-R). Subsequently, the results of the coding were analysed and evaluated with a mixed-method approach. Quantitative comparison of the number of recategorizations of the drawings after the methods course, comparison of ‘average’ images, visualization with multidimensional scaling and qualitative observations of minimum and maximum individual changes have led the authors to three conclusions: (1) After the method course it is less likely that student teachers draw individual work of students. (2) After the course, student teachers were less likely to draw children working on closely guided assignments. Post-course, more student teachers draw pupils working on own projects and tasks. (3) After the method course, it is less likely that student teachers draw themselves in a conventional, classically furnished classroom with only chalkboard and neatly arranged tables and chairs. Taking a dialogic and constructivist approach of learning into account, this research shows that the methods course expanded the student teachers’ repertoire of teaching methods for Media and Computer Science lessons. For following studies in computer science education, the results should be verified by accompanying interviews and subsequently find their way into pedagogical training

Associations between smartphone use and mental health and well-being among young Swiss men

Background and aims: Intense use of smartphones is associated with mental health problems and low well-being. However, little is known about the mental health and well-being of non- and low-level users. This study investigated the possibly non-linear associations between time spent using a smartphone, including non-users, and mental health and well-being among young adults. Methods: Between 2016 and 2018, 5315 young Swiss men (M = 25.45 years old, SD = 1.25) completed a questionnaire assessing smartphone use, daily time spent using a smartphone, mental health and well-being (i.e. depression, social anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, life satisfaction, stress) and potential confounding variables (social capital, personality, education). The associations of smartphone use and time spent using a smartphone (linear and quadratic associations) with mental health and well-being were tested using regression models. Results: Non-users (4.3%) reported worse mental health and well-being than smartphone users on all outcomes. Time spent using a smartphone was linearly associated with higher rates of social anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and lower levels of life satisfaction. The association with stress was non-linear, with significant linear and quadratic coefficients of time spent using a smartphone. Associations were partially attributable to confounding variables (i.e. social capital, personality, and education). Conclusions: Non-users and intense users of smartphones have lower levels of mental health and well-being than low-level users. Although society and mental health professionals are deeply concerned about the potentially negative consequences of the ever-increasing use of smartphones, the present study suggested that not using a smartphone may also indicate problems

Erfahrung Ganztagesschule in der Stadt Bern – Phase 2. Bericht zur Begleitforschung zu den drei neu eröffneten Ganztagesschulen in der Stadt Bern

    Get PDF

High-resolution aerosol concentration data from the Greenland NorthGRIP and NEEM deep ice cores

Records of chemical impurities from ice cores enable us to reconstruct the past deposition of aerosols onto polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Through this they allow us to gain insight into changes of the source, transport and deposition processes that ultimately determine the deposition flux at the coring location. However, the low concentrations of the aerosol species in the ice and the resulting high risk of contamination pose a formidable analytical challenge, especially if long, continuous and highly resolved records are needed. Continuous flow analysis, CFA, the continuous melting, decontamination and analysis of ice-core samples has mostly overcome this issue and has quickly become the de facto standard to obtain high-resolution aerosol records from ice cores after its inception at the University of Bern in the mid-1990s. Here, we present continuous records of calcium (Ca2+), sodium (Na+), ammonium (), nitrate () and electrolytic conductivity at 1 mm depth resolution from the NGRIP (North Greenland Ice Core Project) and NEEM (North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling) ice cores produced by the Bern Continuous Flow Analysis group in the years 2000 to 2011 (Erhardt et al., 2021). Both of the records were previously used in a number of studies but were never published in full 1 mm resolution. Alongside the 1 mm datasets we provide decadal averages, a detailed description of the methods, relevant references, an assessment of the quality of the data and its usable resolution. Along the way we will also give some historical context on the development of the Bern CFA system. The data is available in full 1 mm and 10-year-averaged resolution on PANGAEA (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.935838, Erhardt et al., 2021

The Role of Vocabulary Components in Second Language Learner’s Early Reading Comprehension

    Get PDF
Background In countries with German as an official language, children with German as a second language perform overall worse in school than their German native speaking peers. This particularly affects written language skills, which require advanced language knowledge. The reasons are manifold, but one is prominent, namely poor vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary, however, consists not only of the number of known words but also of a complex and hitherto under-researched lexico-semantic framework, which is referred to as vocabulary depth. Method In the present study, a sample of 373 children (322 German native speakers and 51 with German as a second language) was examined longitudinally in Grade 2 and 3 for their reading comprehension and vocabulary breadth and depth. Vocabulary depth was defined as relational and semantic word knowledge. Latent change score models on vocabulary breadth and depth development including reading precursor skills, non-verbal intelligence and SES were conducted. Results The children with German as a second language scored lower than the native German speakers in reading and vocabulary tests, with the difference in vocabulary depth being more pronounced than in vocabulary breadth. Importantly, the differences did not tend to diminish over time, which could have been expected. The differences in reading comprehension can be accounted for mainly by the variations in vocabulary, especially in vocabulary depth. Conclusions These findings emphasise the importance of including not only vocabulary breadth but also vocabulary depth in the context of reading research on children who do not speak the majority language

Die Determinanten eines gelungenen Kindergarteneintritts: Ergebnisse einer querschnittlichen Studie aus der Schweiz

    No full text
