Fragen über Fragen: Eine Untersuchung zum Frageverhalten von Schülerinnen und Schülern des 2. Zyklus in ästhetisch forschenden Unterrichtsformen
Modeling the intra-urban nocturnal summertime air temperature fields at a daily basis in a city with complex topography
Detailed knowledge about the intra-urban air temperature variability within a city is crucial for the implementation of adaptation strategies to counteract the negative effects of urban heat stress. Various methods to model urban-rural temperature differences exist, but they often only cover certain periods (heatwave, hot day) or meteorological conditions (sunny and calm) due to computational limitations or limited data availability. Here, we present a land use regression approach to model nocturnal air temperature fields for every single night of the summers 2018 to 2020 in a city with complex terrain (Bern, Switzerland). Furthermore, we investigate the applicability of different model structures and straight-forward computable GIS variables to model cold air drainage, which exerts an important influence on the local-scale climate of cities with complex terrain. The geostatistical models are calibrated with in-situ data of a dense low cost air temperature measurement network and high resolution spatiotemporal (land use and meteorology) data, which are all publicly available. The resulting land use regression models are capable to model and map intra-urban air temperature differences with a good model performance (R2: 0.65–0.71; RMSE: 0.69–0.76 K). Evaluations with data from additional measurement stations and periods (summer 2021) show that the models are able to estimate different meteorological and spatial conditions, but that the representation of small-scale topographic features remains difficult. However, the comparatively low computational and financial effort needed to calculate nocturnal air temperature fields at daily basis enable new applications for cities with restricted resources for various areas of interest, such as urban planning (e.g. effect of heat mitigation policies) or heat risk management (e.g. analyze small-scale urban heat vulnerability)
Associations Between Classroom Climate, Empathy, Self-Efficacy, and Countering Hate Speech Among Adolescents: A Multilevel Mediation Analysis
Although hate speech is widely recognized as an online phenomenon, very few studies have investigated hate speech among adolescents in offline settings (e.g., schools). At the same time, not much is known about countering hate speech (counterspeech) among adolescents and which factors are associated with it. To this end, the present study used the socio-ecological framework to investigate the direct and indirect links among one contextual factor (i.e., classroom climate) and two intrapersonal factors (i.e., empathy for victims of hate speech, self-efficacy regarding intervention in hate speech) to understand counterspeech among adolescents. The sample is based on self-reports of 3,225 students in Grades 7 to 9 (51.7% self-identified as female) from 36 schools in Germany and Switzerland. Self-report questionnaires were administered to measure classroom climate, empathy, self-efficacy, and counterspeech. After controlling for adolescents’ grade, gender, immigrant background, and socioeconomic status (SES), the 2-(1-1)-1 multilevel mediation analysis showed that classroom climate (L2), empathy for victims of hate speech (L1), and self-efficacy toward intervention in hate speech (L1) had a positive effect on countering hate speech (L1). Classroom climate (L2) was also positively linked to empathy for victims of hate speech (L1), and self-efficacy toward intervention in hate speech (L1). Furthermore, classroom climate (L2) was indirectly associated with countering hate speech (L1) via greater empathy (L1) and self-efficacy (L1). The findings highlight the need to focus on contextual and intrapersonal factors when trying to facilitate adolescents’ willingness to face hate speech with civic courage and proactively engage against it
Conley & You, 2013).
Decreasing nitrogen deposition rates: Good news for oligotrophic grassland species?
Several studies have found that increased nitrogen (N) deposition leads to a decline in species richness in semi-natural grasslands, mainly due to the loss of species typical of nutrient-poor soils. However, after reaching a peak around 1990, N deposition has decreased in Europe over the last 30 years. In this study, we investigated the changes in species number and composition of semi-natural grasslands during this period of declining N deposition. To this end, we compared the data from the first survey (2001-2005) of 147 grassland sites in Switzerland with those from the third survey (2011-2015). We further analysed the vegetation development of a specific hay meadow from 1992 to 2013. In this grassland, total vegetation cover and the cover of graminoid species decreased, while the cover of oligotrophic species increased. At the 147 grassland sites, total species number decreased at sites with still high levels of N deposition and it tended to increase at sites with low N deposition, i. e. below the critical load for N deposition. The number of oligotrophic grassland species increased at sites with a large decrease in N deposition and strong inclination. Thus, the results of this study indicate that the reduction of N emissions had a measurable positive effect on species diversity in these semi-natural grasslands. Most of the grasslands surveyed appear to be quite resilient against N deposition, i. e. they do not shift to an alternative low diversity state dominated by a few competitive species, and recovery of the species composition as a result of the decrease in N deposition seems possible, especially on steep slopes. Furthermore, the study underlines the importance of regular management of semi-natural, unfertilised, low-productivity grassland to maintain the diversity of oligotrophic grassland species
Student teachers’ perceptions of trust during the team practicum
Team teaching as a form of collaborative teaching practice is increasingly employed in teacher education. Positive and trusting relationships with the team partner and the mentor teacher are at the core of such internships and form the basis for optimal learning experiences and successful cooperation in the practicum. However, trust has been little explored in pre-service teacher education. The present study addressed students’ perceptions of trust in their team partner and their mentor teacher. A total of 109 Swiss students studying pre-primary and primary teacher education filled in questionnaires (open-ended questions), and another 27 student teachers were interviewed. The results reveal that many different facets contributed to student teachers’ perceptions of trust. These could be divided into the two main dimensions: interpersonal and professional trust. Open communication based on mutual appreciation and respect was the core element of a ‘trusting’ relationship from the students’ perspective

Übersetzungsmaschinen im Englischunterricht des Zyklus 3
Machine translation offers new starting points for the development of foreign language teaching. As part of a project on machine translation in English lower secondary classrooms, teachers were surveyed, and exemplary lesson plans were developed and evaluated. The questionnaire results revealed that the use of machine translation in the classroom causes some concern. Preliminary project findings indicate that machine translation can contribute to vocabulary learning provided that its use is addressed and practiced in the classroom. Based on the project results, suggestions for the use of translation machines at lower secondary level are discussed
