GIS-based revision of a WUDAPT Local Climate Zones map of Bern, Switzerland
Urban areas are particularly affected by heatwaves through the intensification of heat stress by the urban heat island effect. For effective climate change adaptation, information about microscale surface cover, structures, and human activity in cities is needed to depict the underlying causes of urban heat stress. The framework of “Local Climate Zones” (LZCs) classifies and standardizes urban areas based on such characteristics. To date, most LCZ mapping workflows use satellite imagery as input. The resulting maps may lack some important details, and thus benefit from the use of additional geodata. We introduce a novel approach that combines the geodata of urban canopy parameters with the remote sensing-based LCZ map of Bern, Switzerland. City-specific urban canopy parameters are calculated and used to adjust established value ranges, if necessary. The most common misclassification patterns are identified and misclassified pixels are corrected using a decision tree and k-nearest-neighbor algorithm. Results show that the conformity with the urban canopy parameter values markedly increased, especially in the distinction of water surfaces, non-built areas, and building height. However, for high-resolution LCZ maps, this also leads to unnecessary heterogeneity, which may require further postprocessing. Given sufficiently available urban canopy parameter data, the proposed workflow is simple and easily adaptable for other cities. It could prove useful in urban climate studies and city planning to enhance an existing LCZ map in a contextualized manner quickly
The perceived dilemma between debt reduction and a fair society: saving for a rainy day without increasing poverty?
Reducing debts and deficits in economic stable times has become the overarching policy goal after the financial and sovereign debt crisis. In an era of low growth, fiscal consolidation is seen as the central key to achieving the latter, however, often resulting in a trade-off between equality and efficiency. In this article, we study whether it is possible to achieve the seemingly impossible: pursuing successful fiscal consolidation without sharp increases in poverty. For this, we apply a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) among the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) plus Switzerland between 1994 and 2019, excluding “the rainy day” (2008-2013) of the financial and the sovereign debt crisis. The absence of sluggish economic growth is identified as a necessary condition for reaching the outcome. Moreover, we find multiple sufficient paths, including such that are not export-driven but rely on domestic strategies (via high employment and a strong left) to achieve fair fiscal consolidation. However, to what extent such a strategy is still possible in the future remains an open question
Gamification of an n-back working memory task – Is it worth the effort? An EEG and eye-tracking study
Gamification of cognitive tasks might positively affect emotional-motivational factors (emotional design perspective) or negatively affect cognitive factors like working memory load (minimalistic design perspective). The current study examined the effects of gamification in a spatial n-back working memory task on task performance, task load (i.e., working memory load and effort), and subjective task experience. Task load was assessed by the physiological process measures pupil dilation and EEG theta (4–6 Hz) and alpha (8–13 Hz) frequency band power. Gamification was achieved by elements of emotional design (i.e., the visual screen design using, e.g., color, cartoon figures as n-back stimuli, and a narrative embedding of the task). While EEG and eye-tracking were recorded, participants conducted gamified and non-gamified 1-back and 2-back load levels. The gamification resulted in positive effects on subjective task experience and affect. Despite these effects, gamification did not affect task performance and task load. However, exploratory analyses revealed increased EEG theta power at right-parietal electrodes for gamified task versions compared to non-gamified ones. Potentially, this effect might indicate participants' increased effort or concentration in the gamified n-back task. In line with an emotional design perspective, gamification positively altered subjective task experience and affect without hampering task performance and therefore justify the extra effort of implementing game elements
From pasta to pHizza: variation and change in VOT in Swiss German
In contrast to Standard German (StG) or English, word-initial bilabial and alveolar stops are traditionally not aspirated in Swiss German (SwG), and typically exhibit short voice onset times (VOT). Throughout the last century, however, more and more aspirated forms have been reported for SwG, but empirical evidence on the factors driving this change is thin. This study is the first to investigate SwG VOT in a large and balanced sample of 1000 speakers from 125 localities. The results suggest an apparent-time change, depending on factors related to the specific word as well as to the region. Furthermore, our models revealed that more frequent use and more favorable attitudes towards StG trigger longer VOT. This effect is particularly interesting against the backdrop of the special diglossic situation in German-speaking Switzerland and suggests that linguistic practices and attitudes can be important motivators of sound change
Fluctuations and precise deviations of cumulative INAR time series
In this paper, we study fluctuations and precise deviations of cumulative INAR time series, both in a non-stationary and in a stationary regime. The theoretical results are based on the recent mod-φ convergence theory as presented in Féray et al., 2016. We apply our findings to the construction of approximate confidence intervals for model parameters and to quantile calculation in a risk management context
